The Assistant Photo Editor reports to the Photo Director and is responsible for managing a high volume of photo shoots, photo research, and departmental tasks across all Southern Living content pillars—travel, home, garden, food, and entertaining. This role oversees photography for 6–10 stories per issue from start to finish. Responsibilities include collaborating with story editors to confirm story needs and working with the Photo Director and Art Director to establish the visual direction.

 

When stories require original photography the Assistant Photo Editor is responsible for providing a detailed shot list to the shoot team, communicating all shoot details to photographers and stylists, and ensuring all required paperwork, releases, and credit information are obtained. They also provide remote or on-set photo direction with guidance from the Photo Director.

 

When stories depend on stock or pick up photography, the Assistant Photo Editor should have the drive and aptitude for researching and sourcing higher quality imagery directly from photographers rather than relying solely on stock photography.

 

Additionally, this position handles the administrative work associated with producing photo shoots. This includes negotiating budgets, coordinating contracts with the Office Manager, organizing final images within the server and database structure, verifying metadata accuracy, reviewing final layouts, ordering high-resolution assets when needed, and entering photo credits during production.

 

Hybrid 3x a week- (Birmingham, AL) 

In-office Expectations: This position is hybrid in-office, with the ability to work remotely for up to 2 days per week. At Southern Living, we work Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the office, and Monday and Friday from home when daily tasks allow.

Duties include the shooting & editing of news stories to support newsgathering across linear, digital and streaming platforms. The role also includes setting up live shots, self independent or alongside reporters, and maintaining high journalistic standards. Candidates must be able to operate in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Baltimore is a fast paced, news-soaked city, sandwiched between DC and Philadelphia. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Should be capable of troubleshooting minor equipment problems in the field and monitoring/performing basic vehicle maintenance.
  • Practice a positive approach to problem-solving.
  • Photojournalists will work in a variety of conditions, depending on the news cycle and assignment.
  • Proven ability to edit on Grass Valley’s non-linear system (Edius) and be able to edit a 2-minute package in 30-minutes or less is preferred. The ability to consistently build a natural sound package is a plus!
  • Edit content for all social platforms creatively, to a high standard, and with attention to detail.
  • Proven experience in using GoPro cameras and incorporate them into daily storytelling.
  • Manage & ingest media efficiently through file-sharing systems and on-site ingest stations.
  • Must be willing to work weekends, nights, and holidays.
  • FAA Part 107 Commercial Drone certified a very big plus. But we’ll invest in getting you certified if you’re not already.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA degree in communications or a related field is preferred along with 3-5 years of Photography/Editing experience in a newsroom.
  • Ability to operate bonded cellular equipment and willing to train/operate an ENG live van.
  • Must have and maintain a driver’s license in good standing.
  •  Must be able to lift, handle and work with at least 50 pounds of equipment.

Hiring Salary Range: $60,000.00 – 67,000.00.

The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies.
