Assistant Editor Position
JumpCrew is seeking a skilled Assistant Editor to work on two websites within the military and veteran interest space. The new Assistant Editor will collaborate with existing team members to continue the substantial growth of both brands. Applicants should have experience working in a newsroom or editorial team environment where SEO and good storytelling go hand-in-hand. Applicants must showcase the ability to work independently and meet production deadlines, and have a willingness to work in a fun, flexible environment where curiosity is rewarded.
Responsibilities
- Edit Military Brands articles for clarity, grammar, and mechanical issues
- Optimize articles for maximum traffic potential across all platforms and verticals
- Schedule and publish articles from Contract Writers, Interns, and Freelancers (according to ongoing KPI schedule)
- Write articles when required
- Engage in regular SEO research and strategy in collaboration with the Managing Editor and Editorial Team
- Manage Editorial Department processes and documents
- Ensure that all content fits within the strategic vision of each of the MBU websites
- Attend daily editorial meetings
- Pitch articles daily (2+ per day) and have a finger on the pulse of the niche
- Create and oversee regular newsletter sends
- Establish mentoring relationships with writers and interns and work together to monitor their continued progress
- Maintain image guidelines for SEO and all visual assets under Editorial control
- Create visual assets when necessary
- Assist in coordination of social media audience development
- Locate and solicit work on occasion from freelance writers and influencers who create content that overlaps with our Military Brands
Required Proficiencies
- BA in Journalism, Communications, Creative Writing, or a related field
- Extensive knowledge of SEO best practices and proven audience growth metrics
- Fluency in SemRush or another SEO tool
- Expert knowledge of CMS platforms, WordPress experience a plus
- Deep understanding of social media best practices and employing social media as a traffic channel
- 2 Years of experience writing for the web, including in a fast-paced digital publishing environment
- Ability to manage staff and set production goals and priorities
- Curiosity and a drive to learn and improve
- A fiercely guarded opinion about the Oxford comma
