Socially Distanced Filming? Google Exec Reveals How

Google exec reveals how to socially distance and film TV shows and movies during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Amid the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, Hollywood productions have shut down around the world. As a result, producers are forced to get creative.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Paul Debevec, a senior staff engineer at Google VR, reveals how producers can film scenes while socially distancing. It can be accomplished by using a 360-degree Google light stage and lighting studio.

“This could be used to record actors in 3D,” he explains is the platform he originally used at USC for the making of ‘Gravity’ starring Sandra Bullock. “You can put them into any scene, in any lighting, from any angle, even after you’ve filmed their performance. You just focus on getting the performance right and worry about where the camera goes and how to light it later.”

“We have the ability to record actors at different times and then light them the same way, put them in the positions relative to each other in 3D, and create the shot that way,” he says. “You could even simulate the shadows that one actor would cast on the other.”

He added, “It’s like having the whole power of the Star Trek holodeck at your disposal for the purpose of making your movie.”

In related news, Tyler Perry will resume production on two shows starting this July in Atlanta, Georgia following the Coronavirus shutdown.

Several weeks ago, Tyler Perry was one of the first Hollywood producers to create a plan to restart filming. Now, he is the first producer to announce start dates for his television shows. On July 8, Tyler Perry will start two BET series including ‘Sistas’ and ‘The Oval’. As a result, production will start shortly at Tyler Perry Studios.

Coronavirus: UK Government Confirms Filming Can Resume

The UK government confirms film and TV production can resume following the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic shutdown.

All physical film production has been shut down and in lockdown since March 23rd. According to reports, film, and television production in the UK are allowed to restart. But, productions must abide by all social distancing guidelines.

The change comes as news of the government’s latest guidelines for social distancing. “All workers who cannot work from home should travel to work if their workplace is open.”

Workplaces that reopen, including film productions, should “ensure employees can maintain a two-meter distance from others, and wash their hands regularly,” according to the Covid-19 guidelines on the government’s website.

The complete Coronavirus COVID-19 secure guidelines will be published later this week, and productions are required to adhere to the rules to restart production.

“The government is working closely with the screen sector to understand how different types of productions can comply with social distancing guidelines, and give confidence to people in the TV and film industries that there are safe ways in which they can return to work,” a DCMS spokesperson told Screen.

In relevant news, the 73rd Cannes Film Festival is canceled.

Due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, the legendary film festival is no longer happening. Festival director Thierry Frémaux confirmed the news to Screen Daily, “Under the circumstances, a physical edition of Cannes 2020 is hard to envisage, so we’ll have to do something different. A ‘festival’ is a collective party, a spectacle that brings together an audience in a given location, in this case on the Croisette, in the presence of thousands of people. Everyone understands that that’s impossible this year.” He continued, “The Cannes Film Festival, which by its nature is a globalized institution, can’t escape being a victim in the same way as the rest of human activities.”

Coronavirus: Cannes Film Festival 2020 is Officially Canceled

The 73rd Cannes Film Festival is officially canceled.

Frémaux added the official film selections will be announced in June but will be restricted to titles, which are “scheduled to be released theatrically between now and spring 2021.”

Organizers will start to plan events in selected theaters as “Cannes hors les murs”, which means Cannes outside the walls”. In addition, if social distancing rules come to an end, the film festival may partner with other film festivals this year.

“We’ll go to Toronto, Deauville, Angoulême, San Sebastian, New York, Busan in Korea, and even the Lumière festival in Lyon, which is a festival of contemporary and classical cinema, which will host numerous films,” Frémaux, who also works at Lumière, added. “And with Venice, we want to go even further and present films together.”

Cannes was set to take place this May 12 to May 23. However, in late March, organizers announced its postponement to the end of June to early July. “As soon as the development of the French and international health situation will allow us to assess the real possibility, we will make our decision known, in accordance with our ongoing consultation with the French Government and Cannes’ City Hall as well as with the Festival’s Board Members, Film industry professionals and all the partners of the event,” the festival first announced. Currently, over 26,000 people have died from the Coronavirus in France.

In other news, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos is creating a plan to reopen Hollywood’s film industry after the Coronavirus Pandemic.

The Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic has shut down productions across the world. During the golden era of streaming and entertainment, the virus shut down all productions. Now, Netflix’s CEO is working on the way to get production back to work as safely as possible.

“While we will need to change this process — in some cases dramatically — to ensure the safety of cast and crew during this pandemic, the closed nature of sets also offers some advantages,” Sarandos wrote Monday in an op-ed published in the Los Angeles Times. “Not least that they provide a relatively controlled environment, where we can track who comes and goes.”

Is Amazon Going to Buy AMC Theaters?

AMC Theaters’ stock increased 42.4% on Monday after reports Amazon was considering acquiring the company.

According to reports, Amazon and the company’s CEO Jeff Bezos are “circling” the theater company and have held talks about a “potential takeover of AMC by Amazon.” That said, there is no word if these negotiations are still active or if the deal is settled.

As a result of the report, AMC Entertainment Holdings saw their stock increase 42.7 percent on Monday morning, more than double the company’s record low close on April 13th.

The Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic had a disastrous impact on the movie theater franchise. Due to the outbreak, the company had to shut down all of their locations and putting the future of the company in jeopardy. In addition, the company announced it would stop showing Universal Pictures films in its theaters after the studio to send a few hit movies went straight to video on demand.

AMC’s most recent earnings report saw the company miss analyst predictions for total earnings. The company’s revenue dropped 6.4% or $50 million, from the first Q1 of last year. Its net income was less than half the previous year, totaling $69 million. AMC also saw ad sales dropped 11% during its first quarter as the theaters nationwide closed.

Mark Hamill Reveals Why He’s Leaving Star Wars: “They Don’t Need Me”

Actor Mark Hamill reveals his time on the ‘Star Wars’ franchise is officially over.

In an interview with EW, the actor discussed why he is saying goodbye to the iconic Star Wars character but remains excited about the future of the franchise.

“Oh, I can’t imagine that, no,” Hamill tells EW exclusively about whether or not he’d consider playing in the Star Wars universe again if the situation was right. “I had a beginning, middle, and end. Those films gave me far more than I ever expected when we started out so it’s never even occurred to me. My farewell was in Episode IX and it was bittersweet. I love all those people and I certainly have affection for George and the character he created. I’m full of gratitude for what it has given me and my career but I don’t want to be greedy. There are still so many more stories to tell and so many great actors to tell them, they don’t need me.”

Hamill may have said his final farewell to Luke Skywalker and explains why the franchise’s change with the Disney+ series ‘The Mandalorian’ is a great idea.

“I think they have a wonderful advantage on The Mandalorian in that it’s economical storytelling. They don’t have the burden of delivering a gigantic special effects extravaganza like the films had to do,” he explains. “It sort of gets back to the basics of George envisioning it as a western in space. It has that tone of a Sergio Leone Western. I’m very impressed with it and to me, a very smart move on their part because you can’t keep trying to top…It’s like the superhero movies that have to deliver these gargantuan epics. And with The Mandalorian, they can concentrate more on the characters and the storytelling. I think it’s excellent.”

In relevant news, Taika Waititi to direct a new ‘Star Wars‘ movie.

Disney and Lucasfilm announced Taika Waititi will direct a new “Star Wars” movie, which he is writing with “1917” writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns.

The announcement confirms the news that broke in January which claimed Waititi was working on a new “Star Wars” movie, after directing the season finale of the Disney Plus series “The Mandalorian”.

At this time, it is unknown whether Waititi will direct a trilogy or if it is a separate project.

In a previous interview with Varietyafter winning the best-adapted screenplay Oscar for “Jojo Rabbit”, the director hinted at the possibility of making a “Star Wars” film.

“Are there discussions about the ‘Star Wars’ film? Like, yeah, I discussed with my friends in 1996 how cool ‘Star Wars’ was,” Waititi joked in February. “I think people see me hanging out with people, especially with ‘Star Wars,’ and think I’m having some big discussions about it. I would f—ing love to.…If it was right. I would want to do any kind of movie if it made sense, and if it felt not like career suicide.”

Netflix’s ’13 Reasons Why is ending this summer.

For three seasons, fans have watched the students of Liberty High School deal with traumatic events, including suicide, sexual assault, and school shooting.

On Monday, Netflix announced the end is near for the teen drama “13 Reasons Why,” which will air its fourth and final season this June 5th. The streaming platform released behind-the-scenes video announcing the series’ finale will have ten episodes and will air next month.

“In the series’ final season, Liberty High School’s senior class prepares for graduation,” reads the season’s logline. “But before they say goodbye, they’ll have to keep a dangerous secret buried and face heartbreaking choices that could impact their futures forever.”

Several of the show’s cast members are seen crying and hugging in the one-minute teaser, which gives some hints about the final season.

In relevant news, the creator of “Black Mirror “thinks the world is not ready for a new season considering the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic is a real threat to the world.

“Black Mirror” is one of the most popular shows on Netflix. But, can the world handle a viral pandemic and terror of a sci-fi series? Currently, “Black Mirror” creator Charlie Brooker thinks the world is not ready for a new season of “Black Mirror.”

Recently, Brooker was asked by Radio Times about Season 6. The news outlet reports Brooker said, “he’s not sure if audiences could stomach another season at the moment.”

“I’ve been busy doing things. I don’t know what I can say about what I’m doing and not doing,” Brooker said. “At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on any one of those [‘Black Mirror’ episodes]. I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh.”

Anthony Hopkins Advice for Young Actors: “Stop trying to be cool because it doesn’t work”

Anthony Hopkins shares tips for aspiring actors

Oscar-winning actor Anthony Hopkins is a legend in Hollywood. As a student of Laurence Olivier, a classically-trained actor, he brought amazing acting to movies such as The Silence of the Lambs. Many assume he’s a method actor but, in a new interview with Augustman, Hopkins speaks on how he learns his lines and how to get into character.

Hopkins says he focuses extremely hard on learning lines to the point it has a chemical and mental impact on his brain. He says, “Well, I learn the text so deeply that I think it has some chemical effect in my brain. I’ve been playing some pretty tough guys, like King Lear, or this guy with dementia in The Father. It’s exhausting, but I’m not a method actor in that sense. I believe in learning the text which is there. Once you know it so well that you can improvise and make it real, it’s easy. You can’t pretend to know it – it’s impossible to, and I couldn’t do it. I’ve worked with actors who don’t know their stuff, and they were just wasting everyone’s time.”

Hopkins explains there’s a technique to being scary on screen. He says, “Oh yes, I know I can. It’s a technique. When I read the script of The Silence of The Lambs I thought, ‘Ah, I know how to play this guy.’ You get a sense of how you could do it: the more subtle and quiet you are, the scarier it is.”

Hopkins added tips for aspiring actors. He says, “I try to help. I tell them to stop trying to be cool because it doesn’t work, to instead learn the craft and be disciplined. It’s not a competition. Being in competition with people is a waste of time. How do you compete? At the awards? You have five people who are happy to have been nominated, then you have four losers later, pretending to be happy. It’s all bullshit. What’s more important is to keep trying, and to consistently deliver the best you have to offer.”

Jason Bateman Reveals Tips for Aspiring Directors and Actors

Jason Bateman opens up about his approach to directing and working as an actor.

Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor and director Jason Bateman opened up in an interview with Collider, about his experiences in the film and TV industry.

Bateman is known more for working in front of the camera but, he is growing an resume for his work as a director. He won an Emmy for directing an episode of ‘Ozark’, demonstrating Bateman is spreading his wings and talent.

As a director, I’m just trying to assess what is that particular skill set that each actor has?

In the interview, he explains, a director can’t make an actor act well. “First of all, the whole notion that a director can ‘bring out a performance in an actor,’ I always have found is a bit of a… I mean, I get what people are saying with that. But a director can’t make an actor act well. An actor has the things they do really well and things that are just simply not something that they think about. It’s not a question of whether they’re good or not. It’s just a question of what ideas are going through their head. As a director, I’m just trying to assess what is that particular skill set that each actor has? What are the ideas that goes through their head? How do they think? Do they know how they come across or not? Then I just try to direct them inside of those goalposts.”

He added, “If a director tries to pull or push an actor outside of what really makes sense to them, or what they’re able to manage themselves, you’re going to start seeing a lot of acting. So being able to quickly identify what the width is between the goalposts for each actor is really the first thing I try to do. Once I identify that, then I just try to keep them inside that and keep them comfortable. If you’re inside those goalposts, you feel great. You can operate to stall on instincts. Lastly, I try to kind of let them in on what the directing perspective is, with respect to camera. I’ll try to really give them a good sense of what the camera is seeing so that they are assured that the camera is watching. That the camera can see what they’re doing, that they need not throw to the back row, that the camera is the front row. That’s as far as you need to send your communication.”

He adds the best advice and thing a director can do for an actor is, “ just assuring them you don’t need to do a lot of acting, you just need to do a lot of thinking, and the camera has an ability to kind of reach your mind. If they trust it, things end up coming across in a pretty subtle way, which is my personal taste. If it gets too subtle, then I’ll just move the camera. I’ll never make an actor overact because of where the camera is. I’ll just make sure I get in there and get a close up so that they can be as small as they want to be.”

‘The National Treasure’ Disney Series is Coming Soon

The National Treasure’ franchise is moving to Disney+ for a new TV series. The news comes after news broke in January of an upcoming ‘National Treasure 3’.

According to a statement, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed both the series and the movie are being made at the same time “we’re certainly working on one for streaming, and we’re working on one for the big screen. Hopefully, they’ll both come together, and we’ll bring you another National Treasure, but they’re both very active. The one for Disney+ is a much younger cast. It’s the same concept but a young cast. The one for theatrical would be the same cast.”

Nicolas Cage will not appear in the TV series, according to reports. Bruckheimer added further, “The film version is being written right now. The television version is in process. We have a pilot script done and an outline of the future episodes.”

In relevant news, Nicolas Cage will star in a scripted series about Joe Exotic, the viral star from the Netflix docuseries ‘Tiger King’.

According to Variety, the eight-episode series is produced by Imagine Television Studios and CBS Television Studios and will feature Nicolas Cage as the ‘Tiger King.’

CBS Studios optioned the rights to the article in June of 2019. Variety reports Dan Lagana will work as the show’s writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Cage will executive produce the project with his production company Saturn Films.

The series will focus on Joe Schreibvogel, also known as Joe Exotic, a zookeeper who fights to keep his park open even as the world crumbles around him. The series will explore how he became Joe Exotic and how he lost himself in the eccentric character he created.
