‘The National Treasure’ franchise is moving to Disney+ for a new TV series. The news comes after news broke in January of an upcoming ‘National Treasure 3’.
According to a statement, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed both the series and the movie are being made at the same time “we’re certainly working on one for streaming, and we’re working on one for the big screen. Hopefully, they’ll both come together, and we’ll bring you another National Treasure, but they’re both very active. The one for Disney+ is a much younger cast. It’s the same concept but a young cast. The one for theatrical would be the same cast.”
Nicolas Cage will not appear in the TV series, according to reports. Bruckheimer added further, “The film version is being written right now. The television version is in process. We have a pilot script done and an outline of the future episodes.”
In relevant news, Nicolas Cage will star in a scripted series about Joe Exotic, the viral star from the Netflix docuseries ‘Tiger King’.
According to Variety, the eight-episode series is produced by Imagine Television Studios and CBS Television Studios and will feature Nicolas Cage as the ‘Tiger King.’
The series will be based on the Texas Monthly article “Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild,” by Leif Reigstad.
CBS Studios optioned the rights to the article in June of 2019. Variety reports Dan Lagana will work as the show’s writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Cage will executive produce the project with his production company Saturn Films.
The series will focus on Joe Schreibvogel, also known as Joe Exotic, a zookeeper who fights to keep his park open even as the world crumbles around him. The series will explore how he became Joe Exotic and how he lost himself in the eccentric character he created.
