Marvel Reportedly Ending Production in Georgia — What This Means for the Film Industry

Marvel is reportedly relocating its productions from Georgia to the United Kingdom, according to a Wall Street Journal report. Rising local costs have made the UK a more attractive option.

This marks the end of an era for Georgia, which became known as the “Hollywood of the South,” hosting over 20 Marvel projects that helped transform Atlanta into a booming entertainment epicenter.

Local Talent and Crew Feel the Chill

Atlanta actor Matthew Cornwell, who starred in Captain America: Brave New World, can already feel the impact.

“There’s been a downtick, a substantial less number of auditions, less number of projects here in the region.”

Local Businesses Bear the Brunt

Marvel’s presence meant steady traffic—from actors and crew dining at local spots to vendors and service providers profiting off set needs. With Marvel gone, small businesses are already feeling the pinch, especially around Trilith Studios.

Why Marvel Left: Rising Costs and a Global Trend

Georgia’s film tax incentives have long attracted major productions. However, reports suggest rising labor and operational costs prompted Marvel to relocate to the UK, where incentives and lower overhead make production more appealing.

This is part of a broader industry shift: production spending in Georgia has dropped nearly 50% over three years, as studios seek cheaper international markets.

Despite Marvel’s exit, Georgia remains active with a diverse range of ongoing projects:

Feature Films & Comedies

  • By Any Means – Historical crime thriller starring Mark Wahlberg, Yahya Abdul‑Mateen II, Nicole Beharie, and Giancarlo Esposito. Filming began April 15, 2025, in Atlanta.
  • The Breadwinner – Comedy starring Nate Bargatze and Mandy Moore began shooting in Atlanta on May 22, 2025.

TV Series & Pilots

  • Cape Fear (Apple TV+) – Featuring Javier Bardem and Amy Adams, filming in Atlanta from April to October 2025.
  • Beyond the Gates – The new daytime soap on CBS is being filmed at Assembly Studios in Doraville, GA. Production started in late 2024 and continues through 2025.
  • Georgia hosted 245 productions in FY 2025 (July 2024–June 2025), including feature films, TV series, independent projects, commercials, and music videos.
  • Ongoing shows like Sweet Magnolias Season 5, Netflix’s Free Bert, and more, are still filming across Georgia.

Why Georgia Remains a Production Powerhouse

Georgia continues to be a strong filming destination, thanks to its well-trained crew base, varied locations, world-class facilities, business-friendly infrastructure, and robust tax incentive system.

The Georgia Film Office and local partners actively support productions with permits, liaison services, and logistical assistance—keeping cameras rolling across the state.

What This Means for Local Talent & Businesses

  • Actors & Crew: Many opportunities remain. Check out Project Casting’s fresh jobs and audition postings.
  • Small Businesses: Production activity continues to bring foot traffic to restaurants, accommodations, and vendors.
  • Community Adaptation: Although the loss of Marvel is significant, Georgia’s infrastructure and reputation still attract diverse projects that sustain local momentum.

Final Thoughts

Marvel’s exit marks a reshuffling of Georgia’s entertainment landscape—but it’s not the end. With dozens of projects still underway—from dramas and comedies to soaps and thrillers—Georgia’s production engine is still very much turning.
