‘The Lord of the Rings’ Series to Resume Production After New Zealand Restarts Filming

Avatar‘ and ‘Lord of the Rings‘ restart production after New Zealand restarts the film industry.

According to Deadline, New Zealand’s health and safety production protocols are officially endorsed by the national government. As a result, filming can restart in the country after it was shut down due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

TV shows and movies to continue filming in New Zealand include James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ sequels and Amazon’s ‘The Lord of the Rings’ series.

On an interesting side note, both productions did not completely shut down as Deadline reports they continued to work on the film’s virtual production in California with Weta Digital for special effects.

Production on ‘Avatar’ started in 2017 with a budget of more than $1 billion. Earlier this year, release dates for ‘Avatar’ were announced for ‘Avatar 2’ on December 17, 2021, ‘Avatar 3’ in December 2023, ‘Avatar 4’ in December 2025 and ‘Avatar 5’ in December 2027.

Meanwhile, ‘The Lord of the Rings’ series started casting in February with talent agencies looking for character types actors for both extras and speaking roles. The series was reportedly filming the first two episodes of the series, which is directed by J.A. Bayona.

The New Zealand Film Commission reports every production in the country will be required to complete a registration with ScreenSafe to help the Ministry of Health with tracking and monitoring the Coronavirus.

New Zealand Film Commission CEO Annabelle Sheehan said, “The NZFC’s focus and commitment since the industry hiatus, has been the health and safety of all those who work in the New Zealand film industry and the ongoing sustainability of the wider screen sector. We are heartened and grateful for the hard work and partnership of the guilds who have worked to get this document completed so quickly.”

In relevant news, Sweden and Denmark have restarted TV and movie production.

Sweden and Denmark are among the first countries in the world to put in place specific government guidelines and allow production to start.

The measures were listed in a document called the “Nordic Film Guide” made with production company Hobby Film and based data from both Sweden and Denmark. Hobby Film, which mostly makes commercials and is known for producing projects for H&M, Netflix, McDonald’s, and Heineken.

The new rules cancel the possibility of large crowd scenes and large production staff numbers.

“It is deemed irresponsible to execute crowd scenes where social distancing cannot be upheld to a satisfactory degree, as the risk of contagion is considered to be too high,” said the guide, sharing the example of a nightclub scene is a health risk.

Kissing and intimate scenes are not recommended for those older than 70. The Scandanavian website explains there “are no official rules regarding kissing, sex scenes and scenes that require one actor to touch another’s face,” casting actors at an “increased risk of severe illness.”

Coronavirus: “Black Mirror” Creator Thinks the World is Not Ready for a New Season

0

The creator of “Black Mirror thinks the world is not ready for a new season considering the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic is a real threat to the world.

“Black Mirror” is one of the most popular shows on Netflix. But, can the world handle a viral pandemic and terror of a sci-fi series? Currently, “Black Mirror” creator Charlie Brooker thinks the world is not ready for a new season of “Black Mirror”.

Recently, Brooker was asked by Radio Times about Season 6. The news outlet reports Brooker said, “he’s not sure if audiences could stomach another season at the moment.”

“I’ve been busy doing things. I don’t know what I can say about what I’m doing and not doing,” Brooker said. “At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on any one of those [‘Black Mirror’ episodes]. I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh.”

The latest episodes of “Black Mirror” featured high profile actors, including Miley Cyrus. “Black Mirror” has won the Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie for three years in a row. The show will currently compete for the 2020 Emmys with the episode “Smithereens,” which features Andrew Scott (“Fleabag”).

Brooker is the creative mastermind behind “Black Mirror” since the show debuted on Channel 4 in December 2011. The creator is still working as the show’s showrunner with Annabel Jones. Brooker did not say too much about the future of the series other than telling news outlets, “I don’t think there’s anything to stop us. We could do one-offs, we could do an ongoing story, we could do spin-offs.”

In other news, background actors are at risk of not returning to the film industry once the Coronavirus related Hollywood shutdown is lifted.

According to a new report by Deadline, background extras, whose job is to make scenes more realistic, may not return once productions start filming. Many recommendations for safety protocols during the Coronavirus pandemic were released. Nearly the common denominator among all of the recommendation lists is to get rid of large crowd scenes of background extras, or replacing extras with crew members on set. Necessarily, the new safety sets are only to have essential staff working on set.

Netflix’s ‘Extraction 2’ Starring Chris Hemsworth is Coming Soon

Netflix’sExtraction 2 is coming soon.

The movie’s writer, Joe Russo, has signed a deal to make a sequel of the action film. According to Deadline, AGBO, the company ran by Joe and Anthony Russo, is optimistic that Sam Hargrave will return as the director and actor Chris Hemsworth will return as mercenary Tyler Rake. However, those deals won’t be ready until the script is finished.

“The deal is closed for me to write Extraction 2, and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be,” Russo told Deadline. “We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience.”

The movie is set up to create new intellectual property for Netflix as the feature film leaves the door open for prequels to explore the characters’ backstories.

“There was always a simple drive to the story, a balletic execution of action where you take a damaged character who made an egregious mistake in the past and has a shot at redemption which might be fatal,” Joe Russo said. “What was key is that we needed a muscular action director like Sam to be the main creative force in the execution of the action.”

“Extraction” was watched by 90 million households over four weeks; The movie beat “Spenser Confidential,” which had 85 million viewers, and “6 Underground” that had 83 million viewers. Now, “Extraction” is a game-changer for Netflix.

In relevant news, Netflix’s growth surges with ‘Tiger King’ and ‘Ozark,’ the most popular shows of early 2020.

Netflix added nearly 16 million paid streaming accounts in the first three months of 2020, beating prior estimates thanks to the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing guidelines.

The streaming platform announced the company had 182.9 million paid subscribers around the world at the end of the first quarter of 2020. Netflix previously estimated only adding 7.0 million subscribers in the quarter, but it was before COVID-19 forced millions of people to stay at home. Following the immense growth in the first three months of 2020, the platform expects slower growth after the lockdown is lifted throughout the rest of the year.

“[O]ur membership growth has temporarily accelerated due to home confinement,” Netflix said in its letter to shareholders. The company also announced the shutdown of Hollywood productions, has improved their “free cash flow” but, some productions will be delayed by approximately three months.

Coronavirus: Filming Will Restart This Summer in Central Europe

While there are reports productions won’t start filming until 2021, a new report by Variety, says studios are getting ready to start production as early as this Summer.

According to reports, much of Europe is easing restrictions on businesses and travel. Now, Hollywood studios are looking at this summer and early fall to restart production in Hungary and the Czech Republic, which are Central Europe’s largest filming locations.

Mid Atlantic and Stillking Film executives, who have co-produced Warner Bros. and Sony’s “Blade Runner 2049,” 20th Century Fox’s “The Martian,” Netflix’s “The King,” and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” are hoping international productions start filming as soon as the restrictions are lifted.

“The shows that left are all starting to formulate calendars on the basis of expectations…that would allow them to move forward,” said Adam Goodman of Mid Atlantic in Budapest, who expects to begin prepping for his international clients in June and July in order to commence shooting by September.

“People within the film industry in the Czech Republic are cautiously optimistic,” said Stillking’s David Minkowski, who oversees productions in both countries.

“The government has managed the crisis wisely, citizens in general acted responsibly, and the result is the infection rate has remained relatively low, allowing the country to re-open commercially and the industry to get back on its feet quickly.”

Disney was forced to shut down production of the Disney Plus series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” in Prague due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Amazon’s “Carinval Row” starring Orlando Bloom was also filming in Prague and placed on hiatus.

In Budapest, “The Nightingale” a period drama from Dakota and Elle Fanning was in production prior to the Coronavirus pandemic shutdown.

But, there is a level of uncertainty as lockdown measures could be reimposed if coronavirus cases rebound and rise again.

The Czech Republic government is expected to announce new safety guidelines for all film productions. Currently, social distancing rules are in place for local productions. But, public gatherings of up to 100 people will be allowed as soon as May 11th.

“The film industry have been working with the Ministry of Health to plan the way forward in terms of health and safety protocols that will allow production to resume efficiently and safely,” Minkowski says to Variety. “Smaller shoots are already happening in the country, and it is entirely conceivable that larger films and series will be back up and running in June.”

Adam Goodman of Mid Atlantic in Budapest told Variety, “The initial stage (of the pandemic response) was wrapping up the shows that left, and wrapping them up in such a way so that we could open up the proverbial box quickly and efficiently when they returned, so we minimize the amount of prep that needs to take place,” said Goodman. “We want to be able to hit the ground running.”

Overall, studios are excited to start filming as soon as possible. “Our expectation is that we’re going to be jammed going into next year, and hopefully for most of next year, as a result of the backlog.”

He added: “Everybody’s waiting to see who’s going to be first. What’s the first show that’s going to put down roots and make it happen and show everyone that it can be done safely?”

In relevant news, Hollywood is getting hit hard by the Coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak with filming not set to resume until 2021.

Most studio productions have shut down indefinitely and others are figuring out ways to reopen their facilities.

Despite the health crisis, studio executives are looking into ways to safely resume production. According to Varietystudios and production companies are researching how to accomplish a safe and secure production facility to resume filming movies later this year.

However, according to Elsa Ramo, an attorney who has represented Skydance Media, warns filming may not start until after 2020. “I have a lot of clients with productions that they want to shoot in 2020,” Ramo told Variety. “But it would be arrogant and misleading of me to offer them any sort of assurance that’s possible.” Especially, if another outbreak returns, later on, this year, any plans to restart production in 2020 is far too optimistic for major productions.

Coronavirus: Hollywood Extras are At Risk of Disappearing From Sets

Background Actors are at risk of not returning to the film industry once the Coronavirus related Hollywood shutdown is lifted.

Deadline interviewed Rick Markman, a 20-year veteran background actor explains, “It is the Background Actor that fills the stadiums for the sporting events and concerts, we eat in restaurants and coffee shops, we shop the retail stores, we attend weddings and funerals, we are the pedestrians on the sidewalks,” he says. “In short, Background Actors make up the crowd scenes that convey the reality of life to TV shows and feature films.”

“In short, Background Actors make up the crowd scenes that convey the reality of life to TV shows and feature films.”

Even if extras are hired to work on a project, Markman argues that safety protocols may not translate to background actors hired to work on productions. “Until needed on set, Background Actors are kept in a ‘holding area,’” Markman says. “Many times, these holding areas are equivalent to a ‘can of sardines.’ It would be virtually impossible to impose 6-feet social distancing from each other under the conditions we worked pre-COVID-19.”

SAG-AFTRA background actors are at more significant risk of not working enough to get benefits. “SAG-AFTRA Background Actors are dues-paying union members, and we must meet certain criteria based on our earnings to qualify for health coverage and pension credits,” he says to Deadline. “If numbers are cut, many members will not be able to make their health coverage and pension credits.”

The biggest question is moving forward, will productions even want to hire background extras to work on productions. Deadline reports scripts re being written “to include the bare minimum of background performers if any…  eliminating BG and/or using CGI,” Markman says. “We are being written out of existence.”

“We are being written out of existence.”

It is important to note when it comes to crew members working as background extras, Markman explains that SAG-AFTRA offers exceptions in certain situations, and it is impractical.

“First and foremost, contractually, crew is not allowed to work as background actors. There are exceptions which require a waiver approved by SAG-AFTRA but will not take away from the contractual number of SAG-AFTRA BG,” he says.

“Using crew as BG is unproductive as they have enough work of their own to do. Imagine a lighting grip that is up on ladders adjusting hot lights and moving heavy equipment around the set wearing work attire, or the customer with flaming pink hair and multiple tattoos. It just wouldn’t work,” he says. “Once set is ready for filming, crew would have to clean up and change into proper wardrobe for the scene being shot. A huge waste of time, resources,  and money.”

Markman also explains CGI scenes will not always work. “CGI is fine for large stadium/crowd scenes (aka ‘A Cast of Thousands’) in a wide shot where spectators/crowds have little action and/or are not important to the storyline,” Markman says. “If, however, there are principal actors in the stands or in the middle of a crowd, you would want real people behind them, not computer-generated people whose actions are computer programmed. Same principle with restaurant-, shopping-, church-type scenes. CGI background would be computer programmed, so there would be no spontaneous reactions and/or movements which would look very unrealistic.”

Coronavirus: Gabrielle Union Says Most Black Actors are “One or Two Checks Away From Not Having Money”

Gabrielle Union says most black actors and entertainers are struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hollywood’s film and entertainment industry are getting destroyed by the Coronavirus pandemic. During the shutdown, many Black entertainers are just a few paychecks away, according to an Instagram Live interview with Gabrielle Union and model Sharam Diniz.

“For all of the Oprah’s and the people who have just a lot a lot a lot a lot of money, most of us are one or two checks away from not having money to pay for all of our things, you know what I mean? So this stoppage of work and money is impacting marginalized celebrities the most,” she said.

Union continued: “I think a lot of people need to understand the difference between fame and having money. And I think this quarantine is really revealing a lot in terms of – there’s a lot of people who are famous that don’t have wealth.”

I have been at every level of the game so I speak from personal experience. That is all. But let’s discuss.”

Union added, “The average SAG (actor union) actor makes around 54k a year, while VAST MAJORITY make less than 1k a year from acting work. If we just look at Black actors those #s go down even further. Lets keep talking. Share your stories. Every actor whose name you recognize started somewhere”

Taika Waititi to direct a new ‘Star Wars‘ movie

Disney and Lucasfilm announced Taika Waititi will direct a new “Star Wars” movie, which he is writing with “1917” writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns.

The announcement confirms the news that broke in January which claimed Waititi was working on a new “Star Wars” movie, after directing the season finale of the Disney Plus series “The Mandalorian”.

At this time, it is unknown whether Waititi will direct a trilogy or if it is a separate project.

In a previous interview with Variety, after winning the best-adapted screenplay Oscar for “Jojo Rabbit”, the director hinted at the possibility of making a “Star Wars” film.

“Are there discussions about the ‘Star Wars’ film? Like, yeah, I discussed with my friends in 1996 how cool ‘Star Wars’ was,” Waititi joked in February. “I think people see me hanging out with people, especially with ‘Star Wars,’ and think I’m having some big discussions about it. I would f—ing love to.…If it was right. I would want to do any kind of movie if it made sense, and if it felt not like career suicide.”

This is the first official “Star Wars” movie after “Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss walked away from their Disney deal the last October to make several “Star Wars” movies.

Currently, Waititi will direct “Thor: Love and Thunder” for Disney’s Marvel Studios, which is set to hit theaters on February 18, 2020.

In relevant news, Waititi recently held open casting calls for speaking for “Next Goal Wins”. Deadline reports Taika Waititi will write and direct a movie for Fox Searchlight Pictures. It will be an adaptation on the sports doc directed by Mike Brett and Steve Jamison. The documentary centered around Dutch coach Thomas Rongen’s attempt to take the American Samoa soccer team, which was essentially non-competitive on the world stage, to respectability… and maybe even to the World Cup.

Tom Cruise Teaming Up with Elon Musk, NASA for the First Action Movie Shot in Space

Tom Cruise is reportedly working on his next action movie in space with the help of billionaire Elon Musk and NASA.

According to Deadline, it could be the first movie shot in space. Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. reports,  “I’m hearing that Tom Cruise and Elon Musk’s SpaceX are working on a project with NASA that would be the first narrative feature film — an action-adventure — to be shot in outer space,” Fleming Jr. writes, referencing the private space travel program the Tesla founder launched in 2002. “It’s not a Mission: Impossible film and no studio is in the mix at this stage but look for more news as I get it. But this is real, albeit in the early stages of liftoff.”

In March, Tom Cruise’s next movie, ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ and ‘Mission: Impossible 8’ was delayed due to the Coronavirus shutdowns. The plan was for both movies to be shot back to back and filming for Impossible 7 just began in Italy when it was shut down in late February 2020. Tom Cruise’s other movie, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, was also delayed from June 24 to December 23rd release date.

In other entertainment news, the Hollywood related Coronavirus shut down won’t reportedly end until 2021. Hollywood is getting hit hard by the Coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak with filming not set to resume until 2021.

Kerry Washington Acting Advice, The Alexander Technique, and the Importance of Shoes

Kerry Washington shares tips for aspiring actors and how she gets into character.

The Emmy Award-nominated actress, says her clothes make her get into the role. In an interview with Terry Gross of NPR’s ‘Fresh Air’, Washington opens up about the impact the role of Olivia Pope had on her acting career and what she learned from playing Anita Hill in the 2016 HBO movie ‘Confirmation’.

Washington says she watched the Anita Hill hearings from 1991 many times to get into character. She says, “I could probably recite the hearings to you now. I watched them so much. And I tried to approach playing her with the influence of Anna Deavere Smith. Like, I really tried to watch the video and listen to the audio and capture the cadence and the rhythm of Anita Hill, and I tried to figure out what I could learn about her personality from the placement of the way that she was speaking to those senators and even in her everyday life – that it’s so very different from how I speak and that that difference is reflective of who she is. So it was really fun to kind of work in that way and wrap my head around her, using her voice and her posture and her walk in sort of an outside-in approach to the character.”

Washington points to Hill’s body language during the hearings as something she tried to imitate. She says, “She actually – she did have very good posture. But she also has a little – I won’t call a slump because she’s far too graceful and elegant to call it a slump. But she protects her heart when she sits. And so there’s a slight curvature to her shoulders in the way that she protects her heart and doesn’t let people have access to her innermost heartfelt feelings and identity.”

She says posture also had a big impact on Olivia Pope. In fact, she points to the Alexander Technique as the acting method she used for the role.

The Alexander Technique is described as “a method which helps a person find a new balance in the body by releasing unnecessary tension. It can be applied to sitting, lying down, standing, walking, lifting, and other daily activities…”

She explains, “I mean, you really – you know, you can study Alexander Technique or you know how people move in the world says a lot about who they are. I used to go to rehearsal for Scandal in sweatpants and a sweatshirt, but I could not do the scene unless I had the shoes – high heel shoes on – four-inch heels because Olivia Pope had a walk and she had a posture and she had a stance. And I couldn’t rehearse a scene in flip-flops or sneakers. Even when I was nine months pregnant playing… Olivia Pope, I was in four-inch heels. Sometimes wedges – but I still had to have that heel because that extra height and that extra lean forward and that extra tightness in the belly, in the core that a heel requires, that’s part of the steeliness of who Olivia Pope is. So I always say I don’t know who a character is until I know what shoes they’re wearing, until I figure out the walk, until I figure out how they stand.”
