How to Get Cast in Showtime’s ‘American Gigolo’ Starring Jon Bernthal

Showtime is now filming its new TV series adaptation of American Gigolo with Jon Bernthal set for the leading role.

Showtime has given a pilot order for the show, which was first put into development nearly five years old. David Hollander, who most recently worked on Showtime’s Ray Donovan will work as the show’s writer, director, executive producer, and showrunner on American Gigolo.

Jerry Bruckheimer produced the original movie will also executive produce the show with Jonathan Littman and KristieAnne Reed of Jerry Bruckheimer Television. Bernthal will produce on top of acting in the show. The show comes from Paramount Television Studios, which makes sense since Paramount Pictures produced the original movie.

What is the show about?

American Gigolo is described as a modern-day version of the 1980 film. Bernthal will play Julian Kaye, the role Richard Gere played in the original movie. Julian is introduced 18 years after he’s been arrested for murder and is having trouble making it in the modern-day Los Angeles sex industry and reconnect with Michelle, his true love. Meanwhile, he is investigating to find out who set him up to go to prison several years ago.

“American Gigolo’ comes with all the sizzle you’d expect, but it also offers a deep dive into the complicated waters of relationships and sexuality in 2020,” said Gary Levine, co-president of entertainment for Showtime. “We’ve assembled an ‘A’ team to adapt this iconic movie into a Showtime series with the talent and magnetism of Jon Bernthal, the exquisite filmmaking and showrunning of David Hollander, the legendary Jerry Bruckheimer and our new sister studio, Paramount.”

The TV series will Bernthal’s return to television since the Marvel Netflix series The Punish and AMC’s The Walking Dead. He has appeared in several feature films including Ford v. Ferrari, The Wolf of Wall Street, Baby Driver, The Peanut Butter Falcon, The Accountant, and Sicario.

Succession is an American drama series created by Jesse Armstrong. The series premiered on June 3, 2018, on HBO and has been renewed, and is now casting for the fourth season. The TV series focuses on the Roy family the dysfunctional owners of Waystar RoyCo — a global media and hospitality empire. The family is constantly fighting for control of the company. The cast has a strong ensemble including Jeremy Strong as Kendall, Kieran Culkin as Roman, Sarah Snook as Siobhan, who are the children employed by the company. Succession has received multiple awards and nominations including the British Academy Television Award for Best International Programme, the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama, and the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series.

As LA and NYC Struggle with COVID-19, Atlanta’s Film Industry is Booming

Georgia’s film industry is roaring back to life despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ryan Millsap, the CEO of DeKalb County-based Blackhall Studios, spoke with WSB-TV’s Jovita Moore about the state of Georgia’s film industry. Overall, the sentiment is the COVID-19 restrictions have helped the film industry bounce back after the shut-down.

“You know, it’s going incredibly well. The Producers Guild, who put together all of the COVID protocols, have done an incredible job keeping everybody safe and healthy. The transmission rates inside the industry as a whole are under 1%, which has allowed the production crews to keep cranking,” Millsap said.

Millsap says everyone working in Georgia is taking it seriously and operating safely.

“I think everybody takes it very, very seriously. Because they know that if there was an outbreak on a set that they’d all have to go find new jobs, right?” Millsap said. ”I mean, if production goes down, it might be down for a month. And if it goes down for a month, it might be canceled. So I think everybody’s very, very cautious about the way they approach COVID transmission on set.”

Moore asked if the larger-scale COVID-19 outbreaks in other larger production locations like Los Angeles and New York have impacted Georgia.

“L. A and New York have been largely shut down, a huge boon obviously to Georgia. A lot of the productions that have tried to film in New York or tried to film in LA have had trouble,” Millsap said. “Some of them made it through, some of it’s been government shutdown. But there’s just the back and forth with the government stuff that has been really hard on the production side. And so I think when people have a choice right now, they’ve been choosing Georgia because of the certainty and openness that the government has created.”

Millsap continued in the interview, saying he is excited about the studio’s $200 million expansion, which he believes will be completed by the summer of next year. He says it will increase the amount of work done by the busy studio.

“More movie making for us a lot more jobs here in south DeKalb County. A lot more jobs in Georgia. We’re not the only ones expanding,” Millsap said. “So you know, there’s a there’s a huge push in the entertainment industry in Georgia to really gather all of the talents that are floating around right now that wants to get out of California, that wants to get out of New York, and wants to make a new home and a place that they can have a little bit more security.”

In relevant news, due to surges in COVID-19 infections and deaths in Los Angeles, California, several TV shows delayed their return to production after the holiday break.

Studios responded to the Los Angeles County Department of Health plea to the film industry to shut down productions for several weeks during the ongoing surge of coronavirus infections. Studios reviewed their production schedules, including talent availability, to see if they could shut down.

One of the next big productions to film in Georgia is Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam. According to reports, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is returning to Georgia. The movie was expected to film in Atlanta this August but, was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wakanda TV Series Coming Soon to Disney Plus

Disney is working on a Wakanda TV series at Disney Plus under Ryan Coogler’s new television deal.

A new TV series set in Wakanda is currently in development at Disney Plus. The new series is part of a new multi-year partnership TV deal with Ryan Cooler and his Proximity Media, which will potentially include other TV projects in the future. 

Cooler, who previously directed and co-wrote the Marvel film Black Panther, is working on the movie’s sequel.

The deal will give Proximity to curate other shows for different divisions of Walt Disney Company. 

“Ryan Coogler is a singular storyteller whose vision and range have made him one of the standout filmmakers of his generation,” said Bob Iger, executive chairman of  The Walt Disney Company. “With ‘Black Panther,’ Ryan brought a groundbreaking story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment. We’re thrilled to strengthen our relationship and look forward to telling more great stories with Ryan and his team.”

If Disney Plus decides to pick up the Wakanda show, it will be the latest show within the Marvel Cinematic Universe to head to the streaming platform. Disney has launched its first TV series WandaVision, and other shows coming soon including Falcon and Winter Soldier, Ironheart, and Loki. Disney Plus is also working on Hawkeye, Moon Knight, She-Hulk, and Ms. Marvel TV shows.

“It’s an honor to be partnering with The Walt Disney Company,” Coogler said. “Working with them on ‘Black Panther’ was a dream come true. As avid consumers of television, we couldn’t be happier to be launching our television business with Bob Iger, Dana Walden, and all the amazing studios under the Disney umbrella. Black Panther was a hit movie for Disney and Marvel, the production earned nearly $1.35 billion worldwide.

Coogler’s movies are hits at the box office. In 2013, he was included on Time’s list of the 30 people under 30 people who are changing the world. The director frequently collaborates with actor Michael B. Jordan, who has appeared in all of his feature films, as well as composer Ludwig Grandson, who has also scored all of his projects. In 2018, he was named the runner-up of Time’s Person of the year. 

This news comes after reports Marvel is developing a Black Panther spinoff with Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger. According to reports, Marvel Studios is planning on doing more villain movies, and one idea being discussed right now traces the journey of Erik Stevens from a grieving young man to a supervillain. The plan is to do a movie, but there is a possibility the storyline can become a Disney+ show instead.

This is just a great example of how Marvel is focused on creating more multidimensional characters. Michael B. Jordan is frequently congratulated as the best villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

About the Reform Alliance: 

According to their website, the mission of the REFORM Alliance is to “dramatically reduce the number of people who are unjustly under the control of the criminal justice system – starting with probation and parole. To win, we will work to change laws, policies, hearts, and minds.”

The REFORM Alliance started following the re-imprisonment of rapper Meek Mill due to a minor technical probation violation. It would spark the #FreeMeek movement, which led to his release on bail in April 2018. Meek Mill and others recognized Meek’s case is one of the millions and that a large percentage of people get trapped in the system and do not have the resources to fight back. After Meek’s release, he joined forces with other influencers including Michael Rubin, Van Jones, Jay-Z, Robert Kraft, and many others.

First Ladies is a new drama series starring Viola Davis and coming soon to SHOWTIME. SHOWTIME has given a green light series order to the first season of the hour-long drama FIRST LADIES, starring and executive produced by Oscar, Emmy, and Tony winner Viola Davis, who will play former first lady Michelle Obama. The series is produced by SHOWTIME and Lionsgate Television, and the show will be executive produced by Oscar winner Cathy Schulman (Crash), Jeff Gaspin (Rhythm + Flow), Brad Kaplan (Mr. Church), and author Aaron Cooley, who created the series will write the show.

Step Up (TV Series), which is previously titled Step-Up: High Water is a drama TV series based on the Step Up film franchise created by Duane Adler. The series premiered on January 31, 2018 on YouTube RED. The series was created by Holly Sorensen, who also worked alongside Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan as an executive producer. In May 2018, YouTube announced it had renewed the Georgia-filmed series for a second season but was canceled in August 2019. Then in May 2020, Start picked up the series for a third season.

What is the show about?

The series centers around the students and faculty of “High Water”, Atlanta’s most prestigious performing arts school. When twins Tal and Janelle move from Ohio, they find themselves thrust into a world where every move is a test. As they attempt to navigate their new world— on and off the dance floor— they’ll discover just how deep they’re willing to dig to realize their dreams and seize their moment.

DC’s Stargirl is an American TV series created by Geoff Johns and premiered on the streaming service DC Universe. The TV series is based on the DC Comics superhero Courtney Whitmore created by Johns and Lee Moder. The series centers around a high school student Courtney Whitmore, portrayed by actress Brec Bassinger, who discovers the cosmic staff and becomes the new inspiration for the next generation of superheroes who become the Justice Society of America.

Saturday Night Live star Michael Che is now working on his new sketch show on HBO Max. The streaming service ordered a six-part untitled series from the comedian, Universal Television and Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video.

Each episode will center around a theme or incident such as police brutality, unemployment, and romance with sketches to illustrate what it is like to experience these situations from a Black perspective.HBO Max says the show will be more about being honest than right.

 “I’m really excited to be working on this show with HBO Max,” said Che. “It’s a project I’ve been thinking about for a while and we have a lot of sketches we want to shoot so please wear your masks so that we can go into production.”

“Michael brings a distinct comedic perspective as he illustrates the uncomfortable truths across multiple topics,” said Suzanna Makkos, Executive Vice President of Original Comedy and Animation for HBO Max. “We look forward to sharing his unique vision and necessary point of view with our audiences.”

Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer HBO Max and President TNT, TBS, and TruTV added, “Che is an amazing talent and comic voice and, of course, another opportunity to collaborate with Broadway Video and my friend Lorne is an added benefit.”

Basketball Casting Call

15 to 18-year-olds who can play basketball for the HBO Max series, Community Service. You would be portraying high school students playing basketball at the courts for current season exteriors. Keep in mind that this is an HBO Max sketch comedy series about current world issues. This series is under the SAG Net Code Contract (used for tape projects). The background rate under this contract is $132 for up to 8 hours of work and then overtime after 8 hours. Testing in Manhattan NY and Filming in Manhattan NY. You would need to be available for a Covid-19 test Monday 1/25/21 and work on Wednesday 1/27/21. If you are a minor, you must be accompanied by a parent/guardian and they will also need to be tested as well.

You would be required to follow covid-19 protocol and wear a mask at all times and follow social distancing. You would be wearing a KN95 mask with a face visor over that. You would only be able to take it off while cameras are rolling per SAG/AFTRA protocol. Please note that you will be paid $100 for each test day.

AMC Networks is rebranding the UMC to ALLBLK Network. According to Deadline, the new streaming service will focus on Black movies, TV and culture.

Robert L. Johnson is the entrepreneur known for creating BET. Johnson created UMC (Urban Movie Channel) in 2014. Johnson’s RLJ Entertainment, which also owned the streaming assets including Acorn TV, was acquired by AMC Networks in 2018.

“UMC began as a distribution model for Black creatives to directly reach the then largely underserved African-American audience without the restrictions of legacy content development and traditional broadcast models,” Johnson said in a statement. “As technology advances and programming demands from our community evolve, the rebranded ALLBLK will be well positioned to breakout as the preeminent streaming destination for viewers seeking Black entertainment.”
