Issa Rae On Being Black in Hollywood

Issa Rae opens up about being black in Hollywood

Issa Rae has become a leading star and she started her start in Hollywood by creating her own opportunities. Her breakout YouTube series ‘The Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl’ led her to the hit HBO show “Insecure” and her recent comedyLovebirds“, which is coming soon to Netflix. Despite a growing acting and producing career, Rae has never backed away from being inclusive and finding diversity to work on her projects. The actress says it’s “threaded in the fabric of my being to look around me and make sure that there is representation because that’s what I wholeheartedly want to see.”

In 2019, she produced “A Black Lady Sketch Show”, which is the first sketch series to have an all-black, all-women cast and writers’ room. She also created her own music label called Raedio Label, which serves as a platform to help indie artists get a start in the music industry. Recently, she even partnered with American Express to promote The Ambition Project, a movement whose mission is focused on women’s advancement.

“The work comes naturally to me, and I think that’s where the frustration comes from — to do it because I’m always thinking about black people. I’m always thinking about people of color, I’m always trying to make sure that’s just in the back of my mind,” she tells Yahoo Entertainment.

Diversity in Hollywood

Rae explains she frequently sees a lack of diversity on many sets and productions. “No one is challenged on that. When I go to other sets and literally everybody is a white man and you’re OK with that because you don’t have to think about that. It doesn’t cross your mind because no one is pressuring you to think about it.”

Despite all of her work on promoting diversity, she is not interested in being the sole spokesperson for inclusion in Hollywood and other entertainers should also speak up. “Journalists aren’t asking the white man on the phone call, ‘Hey so this diversity issue, how are you handling it?’” she says. “It’s always us, and I’m handling it by doing what the f*** I have to do and being that. But it’s not a burden at all. It’s only a burden if you don’t want to do it or you’re not thinking,” she adds.

The new season of HBO’s “Insecure” premieres this Sunday at 10 p.m. on HBO.

Shailene Woodley Reveals Why She Took A Break from Acting

Shailene Woodley opens up about her acting career.

Shailene Woodley opened up about a terrifying physical situation she experienced in her early 20’s at the pinnacle of her acting career while making the Georgia-filmed “Divergent” movies. In an interview with the New York Times‘, Woodley says she was “very, very sick,” forcing her to “let go” of her acting career and leading roles.

“I haven’t spoken much about this yet publicly, and I will take one day, but I was very, very sick in my early 20s. While I was doing the ‘Divergent’ movies and working hard, I also was struggling with a deeply personal, very scary physical situation,” she said. “Because of that, I said no to a lot of opportunities because I needed to get better, and those jobs ended up going to peers of mine who I love. They went on to a lot of success, but there was a mix of people saying, ‘You shouldn’t have let that go!’ or ‘You shouldn’t have been sick!’”

Woodley is currently starring in the romantic drama “Endings, Beginnings,” which went straight to Video-on-demand this weekend. Following critically acclaimed roles in “The Descendants” and “The Spectacular Now,” she landed the leading role in three “Divergent” movies. The actress has since worked on indie productions and TV shows, including “Big Little Lies.” That said, according to her interview with the NYTimesit did not come easy.

She explained passing on projects while taking care of herself “combined with my internal process of, ‘Am I going to survive what I’m going through right now and ever be healthy, or even have the opportunity to work on projects I’m passionate about again because of the situation I’m in?’ I was in a place where I had no choice but to just surrender and let go of my career, and it brought out this negative voice in my mind that kept spinning for years and years afterward.”

She says she is in a better place now. “Now I’m on the other side of it, thank God.” Her next big production is with Benedict Cumberbatch in the war drama “Prisoner 760”. She will also appear in “The Last Letter From Your Lover,” starring Felicity Jones.

“Robin Hood” Live-Action Remake is Coming Soon to Disney

Disney is making a live-action remake of ‘Robin Hood.’

According to Variety, an upcoming remake is headed to Disney+ and will remake the 1976 animated classic with director Carlos López Estrada.

According to reports, Kari Granlund, who previously wrote Disney+’s live-action, “Lady and the Tramp,”  will write the screenplay. Justin Springer (Dumbo) will produce the remake. Variety reports the upcoming movie will be similar to Disney’s “The Jungle Book” and “Dumbo” reboots, with live-action mixed with CGI. Casting is currently underway for the upcoming feature film.

Director Carlos López Estrada made his directorial debut in 2018 with “Blindspotting.” He also directed music videos for Billie Eilish and Carly Rae Jepsen.

“Robin Hood” is just the latest of a long history of old Disney rebooted animated movies. It is also the newest movie to go directly to the new Disney+ platform.

Disney+ is slowly building a massive collection of original content. The Georgia-filmed “The Lady and the Tramp” remake, and several original films, including “Stargirl,” are the latest additions to the platform. One of the most popular productions is the “Star Wars” spinoff “The Mandalorian.” “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Loki,” and “WandaVision” were filming in Georgia before the Coronavirus outbreak. However, the global pandemic has led to a significant global shutdown.

‘Batman’ Director on How the Coronavirus is Impacting Filming

Batman‘ director Matt Reeves explains how the Coronavirus is impacting the production of the upcoming dark crusader movie.

As we previously reported, Warner Bros. shut down the production of Robert Pattinson’s ‘Batman’ due to the Coronavirus outbreak. As a result, many fans were wondering how much of the production was completed and what will happen to the movie.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Reeves broke down how the Coronavirus impacted production. He explained, “We’re not officially editing right now. We’ve actually shot a quarter of the movie and I have been pouring through dailies, looking at takes, and what’s to come.”

Currently, only 25% of the movie is filmed and production could remain on lockdown for another month or two, according to reports.

Reeves said it’s too early to talk about what will happen once production starts again. The crew was supposed to move from London to Liverpool to continue filming before production shutdown. Deadline reporters asked if the movie may have to film outside of London to keep the cast and crew safe, Reeves responded by saying, “I can’t imagine we wouldn’t finish in London. The situation is fluid.”

With all this extra time, you would assume script changes are taking place before production resumes. He explains that it’s not happening. “It took me two years to work on that story, and it’s a very specific mystery noir that’s been really thought-out by me and my partners.”

The only thing he predicts is how he will approach filming the rest of the movie.

“It happens any time you shoot anything,” Reeves said. “The unexpected — happy accidents and things you didn’t quite expect: That is the lightning in a bottle for something that is alive. I would say that the changes really have to do with ‘Oh, seeing the tone of this’ with these scenes we haven’t done which connect to that part of the storyline. It feels like there might be an opportunity to explore some of that unexpected tone that we found. With these movies, you never have enough prep time, because they’re so complex and so enormous in so many ways. It also gives me a moment to think about the larger sequences that have yet to come up and how I want to realize those.”

Coronavirus: ViacomCBS Launches $100 Million Relief Fund

ViacomCBS reveals a $100 million fund to help crew members, actors, and filmmakers that are affected by the Coronavirus related Hollywood shutdown.

According to Variety, the support grants will be given to the Motion Picture & Television Fund and The Actors Fund, along with the work of other charitable organizations.

“One particularly challenging area in this period has been production, as we’ve unfortunately had to pause most of our TV and film productions to protect the health and safety of our cast, crew and communities,” ViacomCBS president and CEO Bob Bakish said in a message to staff. “This, in turn, has put at risk the livelihoods of our colleagues who help bring these stories to life.”

Viacom also announced an employee matching gifts program. As part of the movement to encourage the entire company to participate, ViacomCBS will match up to $1,000 per year of charitable contributions from full-time employees.

Over 170,000 people have lost their jobs across Hollywood. This does not take into account background actors, talent agencies, theme parks, and studios, while Hollywood shuts down indefinitely until the Coronavirus Pandemic is over.

“In these uncertain times, giving back and supporting the well-being of our families, communities, and ourselves is more important than ever,” Bakish wrote. “And I couldn’t be prouder of how our company has come together to provide relief and support to those who need it.”

In relevant news, Comcast has created a $500 million fund to help workers impacted by the Coronavirus, and Sony has launched a $100 million fund.

Get a FREE Screenwriting Course from an NYU Professor

0

An NYU screenwriting professor is now offering a free online screenwriting course.

NYU Film School has educated and helped launch the careers of some of Hollywood’s biggest actors, directors, writers, and producers.

Now, NYU professor John Warren is offering a screenwriting course online. While the course is not directly associated with NYU, according to No Film School, Warren does teach there.

Warren runs a site called Young Screenwriters. The site helps aspiring screenwriters to become better writers.

The program website states: “The world is a better place when more people are empowered to tell their stories. But for too long, quality screenwriting courses were only available to young people who lived in big cities and could afford to pay a premium. That’s why Professor John Warren, an award-winning NYU Tisch professor, and professional screenwriter/producer, launched Young Screenwriters. This online writing program can be used in any classroom or individually by students. Now, young screenwriters can learn to write short films no matter where they are and at a price that’s affordable. It’s rigorous, but fun, too. We promise!”

The free program centers around short stories, which Warren argues is essential to a screenwriter’s voice.

Trump on Pardoning Tiger King Joe Exotic: “I’ll Take a Look”

0

Could Donald Trump pardon Joe Exotic?

During a White House press conference on Wednesday, a reporter asked President Donald Trump if he plans on pardoning the “Tiger King”?

Joseph “Joe Exotic” Maldonado-Passage, is the subject of the Netflix documentary series, which garnered more than 34 million viewers within the first 10 days of its March 20 release, according to Nielsen. In 2018, he was convicted of attempted murder for hire and other wildlife violations including five tigers. He was sentenced to 22 years in prison.

New York Post reporter Steven Nelson asked the question.

“One of the biggest rating hits of the coronavirus, aside from these briefings, has been a show on Netflix called ‘Tiger King,'” he said. “The man who’s the star of this is a former zoo owner who is serving a 22-year prison sentence. He’s asking you for a pardon, saying he was unfairly convicted.”

Nelson also brought up that Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., “jokingly said he was going to advocate” for the pardon.

“I was wondering if you’ve seen the show and if you have any thoughts on pardoning Joe Exotic,” Nelson continued.

The president smiled.

“Which son? Must be Don,” Trump said. “I had a feeling it was Don. Is that what he said? I don’t know. I know nothing about it. He has 22 years for what? What did he do?”

Nelson described the show and the charges against Joe Exotic.

“Do you think he did do it? Are you on his side? Are you recommending a pardon?” Trump replied. “As a reporter you’re not allowed to do that, you’d be criticized.”

“I don’t think you would,” said Trump. “I’ll take a look.”

Tyler Perry Studios Hairstylist Dies from Coronavirus Complications

Tyler Perry mourned the death of celebrity hairstylist Mr. Charles Gregory.

On Wednesday, Perry revealed, Gregory died from complications for COVID-19. “ The man was warm, loving and hilarious. We all loved to see him coming and hear his laughter. Charles lost his battle with COVID-19 today. It saddens me to think of him dying this way. My sincerest prayers are with his family,” Tyler Perry wrote on his Facebook page.

Perry then gave advice to Black people who do not believe they can get sick from the Coronavirus.

“While everyone can contract this virus it is black people who are dying from it in much larger numbers. This thing is real, black people.”

He added, “I heard a black person say, “Black people don’t get it.” That is a lie! You can get it, and you will get it if we don’t do what we’re being told to do.”

Perry continued by pointing to the new statistics that suggest Black people are at a higher risk of dying from COVID-19. “Black people, we are at a disproportionately higher risk of dying from this virus. Please, please, please, I beg you to take this seriously. You have to socially distance yourself. That means stop hanging out, stop congregating, stop doing anything that will put not only your life in danger but also the lives of so many others.”

“STAY HOME!! Socially distance yourself and stay alive! If you won’t do it for yourself, do it for someone you love, and for those who love you.”

Tyler Perry ended with his own advice, “My Mother always told me to not wait for help! Be your own help!

This news comes after Tyler Perry paid for the groceries for seniors across Georgia and Louisiana Winn Dixie grocery stores.

Netflix’sTiger King’ is a big hit for the streaming platform.

According to Nielsen and reported by Variety, the seven-part docuseries Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness drew 34.3 million total unique viewers in the U.S. over its first ten days of release (starting March 20).

Consequently, the show is arguably the second most popular series right behind ‘Stranger Things,’ which reached 36.3 million viewers.

Nielsen reveals ‘Tiger King’ was a late-hit reporting an “Average minute audience” of 280,000 viewers on the first day, but rising quickly to four million by Day 9.

Tiger King explores “the eccentrics and cult personalities in the stranger-than-fiction world of big cat owners,” where “few stand out more than ‘Joe Exotic’ (aka Joseph Maldonado-Passage), a mulleted, gun-toting polygamist and country-western singer who presides over an Oklahoma roadside zoo.”

The documentary begins to explore the murder-for-hire plot to kill Carole Baskin, the owner of Big Cat Rescue, an animal sanctuary.

In relevant news, Netflix is reportedly filming new episodes of ‘Tiger King‘. On Saturday, news broke that the popular Netflix documentary series ‘Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness’ will add a new episode. Tyler Perry is an entrepreneur, filmmaker, and actor. But, despite his popularity, he is never afraid to give back.

According to PEOPLE, Tyler Perry surprised elderly shoppers across two states Wednesday morning by paying for their groceries.

Perry paid for the grocers of all elderly shoppers at 44 Kroger stores in Atlanta, Georgia s well as 29 Winn Dixie stores in his native New Orleans, during the hour reserved for older customers during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Several stores are opening their doors early to older people so they can go shopping and practice social distancing as much as possible during the Coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak.

“He wanted to do something special to provide immediate relief for some of the most vulnerable in the two cities he considers home,” a source tells PEOPLE.

Louisiana Police Use “Purge” Siren to Signal Coronavirus Curfew

Crowley, Louisiana police issued an apology for using the siren from ‘The Purge’ to signal the 9 pm curfew, which was put into effect due to the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak.

The curfew bans citizens from leaving their homes between the local hours of 9 pm and 6 am. The police department said the curfew went into effect because the city is located in the state’s Acadia Parish, which has “received the worst rating for the rapid spread of the virus. It has been put into place in order to try and slow the spread.”

Police are giving tickets to people who violate the curfew. People traveling to or from work must have documentation from their employer.

The police reportedly used the same alarm heard in “The Purge,” James DeMonaco’s 2013 horror-thriller about a fictional America where one night it becomes legal for people to commit any crimes, including murder for 12-hours. The alarm in “The Purge” is a signal that it is okay to start killing.

Crowley Police chief Jimmy Broussard said in a statement to the local ABC news affiliate KATC, which he says he was unaware the signal being used for the coronavirus crew was the same signal in “The Purge”. The police chief assured citizens the “Purge” siren will not be used in the future.

“Last night a ‘Purge Siren’ was utilized by the Crowley Police Department as part of their starting curfew,” the statement said. “We have received numerous complaints with the belief that our agency was involved in this process. We were not involved in the use of the ‘Purge Siren’ and will not utilize any type of siren for this purpose. Calls regarding this matter should be directed to the Crowley Police and Chief Broussard and not the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office.”

In relevant news, Universal Pictures is scheduled to release the next “Purge” movie in theaters this summer. However, production is likely to be delayed due to the coronavirus. Moreover, the movie studio was not associated with the police department’s use of “The Purge” siren.

‘Tiger King’ Editor Reveals Crazy Secrets From the Netflix Series

Netflix’sTiger King‘ editor reveals inside details from the series.

Netflix series ‘Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness’ has become a viral hit. Now ‘Tiger King’ editor Doug Abel revealed the secrets behind the documentary series.

In an episode of Hollywood Reporter’s “Behind the Screen” podcast, Dough Abel touched on a variety of topics including how it was originally pitched, Carole Baskin, and crazy behind the scenes stories.

Carole Baskins

In the podcast, Abel sympathized with the owner of Big Cat Rescue. “I certainly feel for Carole, and of course she’s going to defend herself and again, we don’t come to a conclusion,” Abel said.

Abel also defended Carole Baskin’s Big Cat Rescue. “People don’t seem to understand that Carole has tigers in cages, because they’re dangerous,” Abel said. “It’s surprising to me that people don’t know that, of course, you can’t take an animal who’s raised in captivity and, you know, drop him into a jungle somewhere. You can’t do that. So that’s why she has them in cages. It’s in there, but I don’t think it resonates enough.”

But, Abel defended the show’s reporting.

“We did a really thorough job,” Abel said. “It was extensively researched. It was extensively fact-checked. We did try to, you know, make sure that any statement was made had a counter-statement, that it remained balanced.”

‘Tiger King’ was originally pitched as a nature show.

While Joseph “Joe Exotic” Maldonado-Passage became the star of the show, he was originally expected to play a small role. Eventually, the producers changed their focus towards Joe Exotic and his relationship with Carole Baskin and his conviction for having a murder-for-hire plot against the Big Cat Rescue owner.

“So, originally, I believe it was a project that was being pitched to CNN,” Abel said. “It was kind of a multi-part series, and that each part was going to sort of focus on a different species or a different aspect. So there was going to be a section maybe on trophy hunting, a section on big cats, a section on reptiles, and that was kind of the idea that was being pitched, and we originally cut together something that did include other animals. There was a crazy guy who would handle snakes, but it was all in sort of the context of why is it that humans feel they have dominion over animals that they can, kind of, treat them this way.”

The people behind the series are surprised it did so well. They did not have time to do test screenings and they thought it would be “too weird” for audiences to watch past the first or second episode.

Joe Exotic was a difficult character to edit.

The crew filmed for several years and was tough to keep up with. Joe Exotic reordered himself and had a lot of people record him.

“We do have a very funny scene where Joe, you know, sort of revealed he’s not actually the singer of his own songs,” Abel said. “The only reason we didn’t include that is there was a last-minute legal issue where we were worried that he did actually partially sing on some of them, and we decided to not go down that road. It was also a scene that’s very, very funny, but wherever we put it seemed to derail the story, and so that was kind of regretful that we didn’t have that in there.”

Abel added the main reason Exotic was a challenge for the editing was he said a lot of things that were different than what he had said earlier. “I think we just decided early on, let’s just establish him as somebody who you love to watch but you can’t trust what he says.”

‘Tiger King’ almost did not have that gunshot scene

Abel nearly cut out the scene where one of the characters dies from a self-inflicted gunshot.

“We felt very strongly that we shouldn’t use that footage,” Abel said. “I just thought it seemed very exploitive, but then we learned that it doesn’t actually show the actual incident, it just showed another character, Josh, how he reacted to that happening. And then when I saw it, I realized, no, we should show this, because it’s such a haunting image.”

Abel argued that it was a horrifying scene, which illustrated a changing point for Joe Exotic.

“I think that moment was a very important moment, because it sort of changed everything and it sent Joe into a real bad spiral, understandably,” he said.
