Casting Background Actors for New HBCU-Themed Pilot

Job Description
Netflix has officially launched production on the highly anticipated sequel to A Different World, with filming set to begin in Atlanta on July 1, 2025. This revival pilot—directed and produced by Debbie Allen and executive produced by Tom Werner—reintroduces audiences to Hillman College, this time through the experiences of Whitley and Dwayne’s daughter.

Set in the vibrant world of HBCU life, the production seeks young adults to portray students at Hillman College in background roles. This is a paid opportunity that offers aspiring talent the chance to be part of a project honoring Black culture, education, and storytelling.

With original cast and creatives involved, including Allen’s authentic vision and Netflix’s commitment to culturally rich programming, this pilot is poised to be a landmark production for 2025.

Job Responsibilities

  • Appear as background talent portraying students at a fictional HBCU

  • Collaborate with crew to maintain continuity and energy during classroom, quad, or social event scenes

  • Remain on set for long periods with professional conduct

  • Help create an authentic campus atmosphere reflective of real HBCU life

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years or older

  • Must be able to portray African American students

  • Open to all genders

  • Must be available for filming in the Atlanta area beginning June 23, 2025

  • No experience required, but reliability and enthusiasm are key

Compensation

  • Paid background actor role

  • Rate disclosed upon casting

Project Background
Netflix’s revival of A Different World revisits the cultural legacy of Hillman College, decades after the original 1987 series redefined Black representation on television. The original series, known for tackling serious issues like racism, AIDS, and apartheid, now gets a modern update, with a fresh script penned by Felicia Pride (Bel-Air, Grey’s Anatomy).

Although the original show never filmed in Georgia, it drew visual and thematic inspiration from Atlanta’s HBCU community. Now, filming in Atlanta brings the project full circle, anchoring it in a city synonymous with Black excellence in both education and entertainment.

The new pilot not only revives fan-favorite characters and themes but also aims to reflect the current experiences of Gen Z students navigating HBCU culture today.
