Project Background
Netflix’s revival of A Different World revisits the cultural legacy of Hillman College, decades after the original 1987 series redefined Black representation on television. The original series, known for tackling serious issues like racism, AIDS, and apartheid, now gets a modern update, with a fresh script penned by Felicia Pride (Bel-Air, Grey’s Anatomy).
Although the original show never filmed in Georgia, it drew visual and thematic inspiration from Atlanta’s HBCU community. Now, filming in Atlanta brings the project full circle, anchoring it in a city synonymous with Black excellence in both education and entertainment.
The new pilot not only revives fan-favorite characters and themes but also aims to reflect the current experiences of Gen Z students navigating HBCU culture today.
