Getting Started in Voice-Over Jobs

You’ve decided you want to get into voice-over work. Congratulations! Getting started in the voice-over industry can be a daunting task, but it’s not impossible. You can find plenty of work as a voice actor with a little hard work and dedication. Here are a few tips to get you started.

1. Do your research.

Before you start submitting your demos to agencies, it’s important that you do your research and figure out what kind of voice over work you’re interested in. Do you want to do commercial work? Narration? Character voices? Once you’ve figured out what you want to do, you can start tailor your demos and submissions to agencies that specialize in those kinds of projects.

2. Find an agency that’s a good fit for you.

Not all agencies are created equal. Some may be better suited for your particular skillset than others. Once you’ve figured out what kind of VO work you’re interested in, take some time to research different agencies and see which ones might be a good fit for you. Ask around in VO forums and see if anyone has any recommendations.

3. Get your demos in order.

Your demo is your calling card in the VO world, so it’s important that it’s up to snuff. If you don’t have any prior experience recording VO, now would be a good time to invest in some quality recording equipment and software. There are plenty of online tutorials that can help you get started with recording and editing your demo reel. Once you’ve got a few good takes, put them together into a reel that’s around two minutes long—any longer and people will start losing interest. Make sure your reel is tailored to the kind of work you’re interested in—if you’re submitting it to a commercial agency, make sure the bulk of your reel is comprised of commercials; if you’re submitting it to an audiobook agency, make sure the majority of your reel is narration, etc.

4. Start submitting your demos—but don’t get discouraged if you don’t hear back immediately.

It can take awhile to hear back from agencies after submitting your demo—don’t get discouraged if they don’t get back to you right away (or at all). Keep at it and eventually someone will take notice of your talents.

Conclusion:

Getting started as a voice actor can be daunting, but it’s not impossible—it just takes some hard work and dedication .By doing your research, finding the right agency ,and perfecting your demo reel ,you’ll be well on your way towards landing those dream voice over jobs .
