‘Fantastic Four’: Should Marvel Buy The Rights From Fox?

0

Should Marvel buy the rights of ‘Fantastic Four’ back from 20th Century Fox? ‘Fantastic Four’ bombed, can Marvel save the day?

After the success of ‘X-Men: First Class’ and Days of Future Past, 20th Century Fox’s version of the superhero wold was competing against Marvel and DC’s comic book universes.

Tim Story’s ‘Fantastic Four’ movies performed pretty well earning 20th Century Fox well over $500 million in the global box office, more than doubling their investment. While, ‘Fantastic Four’ wasn’t going to compete with ‘Avengers’ or ‘Batman v. Superman’, 20th Century Fox had created a product that they could rebrand, repackage, and ultimately reboot for an even larger payoff.

Problems between ‘Fantastic Four’ director, Josh Trank, and 20th Century Fox resulted in a box office bomb. According to reports, ‘Fantastic Four’ reboot is the worst super hero movie in the last decade. However, international moviegoers are still expected to turn this box-office let down into at least a slightly profitable feature film.

But, it begs the question, should Marvel finally buy back the rights to the ‘Fantastic Four’?

Who owns the ‘Fantastic Four’ movie rights?

All of the DC Comics characters are all owned by Warner Bros. and can appear in any DC comic book universe movie. Meanwhile, Marvel movie rights are spread across several movie studios.

In the early 80s, Marvel was facing bankruptcy and sold the film rights to many of their most popular characters, way before superhero movies were premiering at the box office and selling millions of tickets. The first character to be sold was Spider-Man, then Blade, and finally X-Men.

With the help of Bryan Singer, X-Men became a hit superhero franchise. In addition, Columbia Pictures’ Spider-Man led the way for the generation of superhero movies. Including, Tim Story’s 2005’s ‘Fantastic Four’ movie starring Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Ioan Gruffudd.

Many of Marvel’s initial agreements included a sunset clause which stops rights holders from holding a particular character for too long. Specifically, if the studio chooses not to release another franchise movie within a specific time window, the character rights revert back to Marvel. Over time, certain movie studios have chosen to let their particular rights expire. For instance, Punisher can now appear in the Daredevil Netflix series. That is how Marvel Studios was able to regain rights to most of their superhero characters.

After ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ Sony teamed up with Marvel to feature ‘Spider-Man’ a character that once belonged to his own separate cinematic universe and will now be featured in several other Marvel movies including ‘Captain America 3’.

But, that sunset clause now allows for 20th Century Fox the rights to ‘Fantastic Four’ until 2024, another 9 years.

Fans particularly hated the latest revision of the ‘Fantastic Four’ reboot but, should Marvel reacquire the rights to the superhero franchise?

The Future of Marvel

marvel-slate-avengers-captain-america-black-panther

Marvel Studios, with the help of Disney, is a major force in Hollywood. The movie studios has been able to release a list of movies planned from now until 2020. But, the highly profitable studio is still at the mercy of fans. For instance, if people get sick of the same superhero movie, then Marvel runs the risk of having several box office disasters. Too much of a good thing is always bad.

With so many superhero characters in the Marvel Universe, Disney has the unique opportunity to pick and choose which actors and characters they would like to have in their production. Therefore, it may not even be in the best interest of Marvel to reacquire the film franchise ‘Fantastic Four’. There is no point in spending money to make another ‘Fantastic Four’ movie, if nobody cares about the ‘Fantastic Four’.

In addition, by not picking up ‘Fantastic Four’, it allows for Disney to start and invest in unique and new character movies. For example, Marvel is planning on creating a Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Inhumans, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage movie; characters that have not been tainted by reboots, rehashings, and bad premieres i.e ‘Fantastic Four’.

The Future of 20th Century Fox

X-Men Apocalypse

20th Century Fox plans on building a shared universe around their most profitable superheroes, ‘X-Men’. The new X-Men spinoffs will include solo stories such as ‘Deadpool’ and ‘X-Force’. So, could we expect a ‘Fantastic Four’ and X-Men cross over movie? Probably not. After the horrible release of ‘Fantastic Four’, studios are not going to damage their most profitable characters at the expense of creating another movie.

The Future of ‘Fantastic Four’

As I pointed out earlier, 20th Century Fox will have the rights to ‘Fantastic Four’ until 2024. Therefore, Fox has nearly 10 years to figure out what they want to do with the franchise.

Currently, ‘Fantastic Four’ comic book sales are at all time low, and younger generation of fans are not interested in characters that can set themselves on fire or stretch their body parts. This may allow Marvel the great opportunity to buy the ‘Fantastic Four’ franchise back and add the superhero foursome to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, with the recent Spider-Man deal between Marvel and Sony, I would not be surprised of Fox is interested in bringing back their ‘Fantastic Four’ franchise by any means necessary.

In an industry that is dominated by superhero universes and competing box office sales, ‘Fantastic Four’ lost their first fight against modern day movie theater goers and audiences. If Fox is interested in rebooting the franchise, then the studio is going to have to look outside of the box to find ideas, strategies, and a game plan. If not, Marvel will reacquire the franchise series leaving 20th Century with nothing but a bad reputation.

‘Game of Thrones’ Fan Demands Trial By Combat

‘Game of Thrones’ fan demands trial by combat in New York Supreme Court case.

According to reports, Richard Luthmann contends that the practice has never been officially outlawed in the United States. A Staten Island lawyer has filed documents with the New York State Supreme Court demanding that he he be allowed to settle a court case in a trial by combat in a story directly from “Game of Thrones.”

Richard Luthmann, admitted that he was a major fan of the HBO series, is facing accusations that he aided a client in committing fraudulent transfer. In response, he has officially asked that he be allowed to end the dispute in a fight to the death.

“Defendant invokes the common law writ of right and demands his common law right to Trial By Combat as against plaintiffs and their counsel, whom plaintiff wishes to implead into the Trial By Combat by writ of right,” the court filing states.

Luthmann then goes into detail about the history of trial by combat, going all the way back to the 11th century. Ultimately, Luthmann argues that the no U.S. court has ever outlawed the practice.

“Since [1776], no American court in post-independence United States to the undersigned’s knowledge has addressed the issue, and thus the trial by combat remains a right reserved to the people and a valid alternative to civil action,” Luthmann writes.

Trials by combat was a major deal in “Game of Thrones.” Several characters died fighting to the death especially in season 4 when Tyrion Lannister called on Oberyn Martell to serve as his champion when Tyrion was accused of poisoning his nephew Joffery.

Why The Aurora Movie Theater Shooter Was Not Given The Death Penalty

0

Aurora movie theater shooter James Holmes was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

In an interesting twist, a jury deciding the fate of Aurora movie theater shooter James Holmes said they were unable to reach a unanimous sentencing decision, resulting in life in prison without parole instead of the death penalty for the man who killed 12 people and wounded 70 others at a screening of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ in 2012, according to reports.

Aurora Shooting

For Holmes to be sentenced to death, it would require that every juror agree to the punishment. According to NBC News, it became clear that a unanimous verdict would not be reached after seven of hours of deliberation:

“We ended our deliberations when one absolutely would not move,” [a] juror, who only identified herself as “juror 17,” told reporters after the verdict Friday. Two other jurors were “on the fence” about the death penalty, she said. The jury rejected arguments from Holmes’ defense attorneys that he was legally insane when he carried out the attack and found him guilty of 24 counts of murder — two for each person he killed. Holmes’ lawyers then argued it would be inhumane to execute a man who suffered from mental illness. Juror 17 said the issue of mental illness appeared to be the reason the juror refused to vote to sentence Holmes to death. “There was no other concern,” she said.

At a press conference on Friday, District Attorney George Brauchler expressed disappointment with the sentencing verdict.

“Those jurors did a hell of a job. They were called to do things that many people wouldn’t or couldn’t do,” said Brauchler. “I thought death, I still think death for what that guy did, but the system said otherwise and I respect that outcome.”

Why ‘Fantastic Four’ is the Worst Superhero Movie in the Last 5 Years

0

‘Fantastic Four’ is the worst superhero movie in the last 5 years.

According to Variety, ‘Fantastic Four’ is a major failure in the box office. With a $120 million dollar budget, the super hero reboot is on track to make only $28 million. The movie is so bad even the ‘Fantastic Four’ director, Josh Trank has distanced himself from the ending.

Fantastic Four Cast
Kobby Dagan / Shutterstock.com

‘Fantastic Four’ is so bad in fact, the last major superhero movie to be released that bombed in the box office was ‘The Green Hornet’ and that movie made $33.5 million in 2011.

To add insult to injury ‘Fantastic Four’ is currently labeled as the worst reviewed movie in Marvel history. ‘Fantastic Four’ is not only sitting at one of the lowest movie review scores of 2015, but the rating is tied with ‘Elektra’ one of the worst movies ever made.

Judging from the reviews, the biggest problem with ‘Fantastic Four’ has to do with the storyline.

Will this end the ‘Fantastic Four’ franchise? Should we expect Marvel to finally take back control of the superheroes from Fox?

How Heath Ledger Became The Joker with This Secret Diary

0

Learn how Heath Ledger got into character of the Joker by using a secret diary.

Many people believe that Heath Ledger’s dedication to immersing himself into the role of the Joker led him to his tragic death, and a look inside the actor’s “Joker Diary” is a clear reminder of how committed Ledger was to the role and acting.

In a German documentary titled ‘Too Young to Die,’ Heath Ledger’s father, Kim Ledger, shared details about Heath Ledger’s dedication to playing the role of Joker.

It was eerily innocent.

Heath Ledger Journal

The diary featured a childish cover featuring cartoons but, once you open the “Joker Diary” you will see it was far from innocent.

Sick and Twisted Role models

Heath Ledger Journal 2

The Joker Diary features a ton of twisted characters such as hyenas from Lion King and the character “Alex” from Stanley Kubrick’s ‘A Clockwork Orange’.

How Heath Ledger created “The Joker Diary”

Heath Ledger Diary

While going through the diary, Heath Ledger’s father confirms that his son cut himself off from society in order to dig into the Joker’s twisted mentality and character.

“He galvanized the upcoming character. That was typical of Heath. He would do that. He liked to dive into his characters, but this time he really took it up a notch.”

Before his death, Heath Ledger discussed how he created the director, and in turn learned how to speak like a sociopathic killer like The Joker, he explained to Empire that:

“I sat around in a hotel room in London for about a month, locked myself away, formed a little diary and experimented with voices – it was important to try to find a somewhat iconic voice and laugh.

I ended up landing more in the realm of a psychopath – someone with very little to no conscience towards his acts.

He’s just an absolute sociopath, a cold-blooded, mass-murdering clown, and Chris has given me free rein. Which is fun, because there are no real boundaries to what The Joker would say or do. Nothing intimidates him, and everything is a big joke.”

Heath Ledger studied the history of The Joker

Heath Ledger Diary 2

Alongside drawings and inspiration for sick and twisted characters, Ledger also studied all of the Joker’s past evil deads in the DC Comic universe.

The diary also contained a shot of the original makeup test for the Joker with an erratically scrawled note that Ledger had added later that reads:

8 MONTHS AGO WRAPPED NOW!

The diary’s final pages features the words “BYE BYE” written over a page, and although Ledger was probably saying goodbye to the character, Ledger would eventually pass away.

“At the end of shooting, he wrote goodbye on the back of the last page. It was hard to read that.”

Director of ‘Fantastic Four’ Blames Studio for Bad Reviews

0

The director of ‘Fantastic Four’ is now blaming the studio for the poor movie reviews.

Josh Trank, the director of ‘Fantastic Four’, tweeted that he had a “fantastic” version of the movie a year ago that would have received better reviews but that version will never be seen.

Trank shared the twitter on Thursday but later deleted the comment later on. In the tweet Josh Trank says he was happy with a version made a year ago, implied that the studio made changes and that his version will now never be seen, adding “that’s reality though.”

Josh Trank Twitter

As we reported earlier this week, production of ‘Fantastic Four’ was filled with problems including Trank’s “erratic” behavior and unusual conduct on set.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a rating of 9%, based on 110 reviews, with an average rating of 3.4/10. The site’s critical consensus reads, “Dull and downbeat, this Fantastic Four proves a woefully misguided attempt to translate a classic comic series without the humor, joy, or colorful thrills that made it great.”

Lee Daniels has just landed another major deal with Twentieth Century Fox Television. Several months ago Fox signed a deal with Daniels to allow him to develop, direct and supervise several new shows for the studio under his Entertainment company, while still working as an executive producer of “Empire”. His new series, “Star” centers around the Atlanta music scene which was announced earlier today.

The first project to be developed under the new agreement has been announced. Fox revealed today that it has ordered a pilot from Mr Daniels titled “Star,” which will be set in Atlanta, and will follow 3 young women who are working to make names for themselves in the music business.

The proposed one-hour pilot will be written, directed and executive produced by Daniels, although details on story and characters are scant at the moment, except for Fox sharing that the pilot will “showcase the allure and heartache of the cutthroat music scene, while also exploring cultural themes from a new perspective.”

Casting for the upcoming TV pilot will begin shortly, so we will soon learn more about the characters living in this Atlanta hip-hop world.

Hollywood Director: Netflix is Racially Close-Minded

0

Is Netflix’s “More Like This” Suggestion Tool Racist?

‘Beyond the Lights’ stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Minnie Driver, Nate Parker, Danny Glover, and rapper Machine Gun Kelly (aka Colson Baker).

‘Beyond the Lights’ first premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2014 and was released theatrically by November 2014. ‘Beyond The Lights’ would later receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. The song was “Grateful”, written by Diane Warren for the film.

According to a story by the Tribeca Film Festival, ‘Beyond the Lights’ director has a problem with Netflix’s “More Like This”.

She wonders why Netflix connects Beyond the Lights to dissimilar films starring black actors instead of similar films like Notting Hill, Walk the Line, The Notebook and the prestigious Dreamgirls.

Prince-Bythewood also believes Hollywood puts black movies into a category.

Prince-Bythewood also compares the Netflix problem with how Hollywood works as a whole, and justifiably so. Watch what happens when the next movie like 2013’s The Best Man Holiday, with an all-black headlining cast, makes a boatload of money—the trades will write about “black movies” are suddenly in vogue, and how, wouldn’t you know it, black audiences love going to the movies! As if those same moviegoers aren’t also interested in others movies about friendship and human interaction that just so happen to star actors of different races.

You can read the full report here and it is definitely worth the time.

Kirsten Dunst Shares Amazing Acting Advice

Kirsten Dunst reveals how she survived Hollywood and provides amazing acting advice.

Kirsten Dunst has worked in Hollywood for most of her life. Starting out as a young model at the age of three and venturing into acting at age six, Kristen Dunst knows a thing or two about the entertainment industry.

Now at age 33, Kirsten Dunst is looking back at her acting career in the September issue of Town & Country magazine.

But, since her 2008 rehab treatment, the actress revealed how Hollywood caused her to go into a deep depression saying it is ‘totally ridiculous [the] expectations people put on actors.’

Kirsten voluntarily checked herself into the Cirque Lodge treatment center in Utah when she was 27-years-old for depression after rumors of drug and alcohol abuse hit the Internet.

Kirsten Dunst

‘What people expect of an actor is totally ridiculous,’ she told the publication.

‘It’s unfair that an artist is expected to speak really well in public and have skin tough enough to withstand sometimes really hurtful criticism, but also, in order to do the job, be really sensitive and in touch with their feelings.’

Adding: ‘So all you can do is be yourself – just be who the hell you are.’

Kirsten Dunst first started acting in the Woody Allen-directed New York Stories in 1983, she would later go on to star in the 1994’s ‘Interview with the Vampire’ alongside Brad Pitt.

Later on she would book over 30 movie roles including ‘Marie Antoinette’ and ‘Spider-Man’.

‘I know some actresses who are better at it,’ she said of other child actors. ‘Dakota Fanning reminds me a lot of myself, but she’s wiser that I was at her age.’

Now she is set to make her first major TV role in the upcoming second season of FX’s Fargo.

‘TV is a lot harder than film. A lot harder,’ Kirsten revealed.
