Gabrielle Union reveals how hard it is for women to have kids and become an actor in Hollywood.
Gabrielle Union is opening up to Redbookabout the struggles female actors face when trying to have an acting career and start a family.
“The reality is that women are discriminated against in the workplace for being mothers,” the BET Being Mary Jane leading actress tells the magazine in its October issue. “As much as there are strides being made — you get pregnant, your career takes a hit. You can’t have a bad day. Don’t you dare cry at work. Don’t raise your voice. Especially if you’re a black woman in corporate America — now you’re ‘the angry black woman.’ ”
Debby Wong / Shutterstock.com
The 42-year-old actress says she is trying to start a family with her husband Dwayne Wade, “”so far it has not happened for us”. Union adds that women are made to feel guilty for not having kids.
“There’s a certain amount of shame that is placed on women who have perhaps chosen a career over starting a family younger,” she tells Redbook. “The penance for being a career woman is barrenness. You feel like you’re wearing a scarlet letter.”
Gabrielle Union is one of three women chosen to be on the cover of Redbook’s anti-aging issue, including Erin Andrews and Maria Menounos. All three women talk about challenges they have faced while trying to start a career and a family.
One Atlanta casting director is standing up against The War Room and their alleged racial and slave labor production practices.
The Christian movie ‘War Room’ allegedly did not allow Jews, Muslims or anyone that was not Christian to appear in the movie. In addition, casting directors and producers made actors work for free.
According to casting director Jackie Burch, the casting director behind several major feature films including Divergent and The Hunger Games, took to Facebook to call out the Christian Box-Office hit movie , ‘War Room’.
Burch points out that The War Room “would not allow anyone to work on the movie that was not Christian.” In fact, they said that no Jews were allowed to be a part of this production and she is calling for everyone to boycott the movie.
In addition, they also wanted people to work for free. “So you tell me how religion is an example of goodness? Sound to me like racism and taking advantage of people by using religion not to pay people.”
The War Room would not allow anyone to work on the movie that was not christian. They said no Jews etc and i think people should be boycotting this kind of behavior. They also wanted people to work for free so you tell me how Religion is an example of goodness? Sound to me like racism and taking advantage of people by using religion not to pay people.
Jackie Burch
The War Room is a 2015 Christian drama movie directed by Alex Kendrick and produced by Stephen Kendrick. When asked about the title of the movie, director Kendrick says “‘War Room’ because, like the military, we should seek God for the right strategy before going into combat. By combat, I mean daily issues we face in our culture.”
The War Room centers around Tony and Elizabeth Jordan who are having a trouble in their marriage. With the help of a woman named Miss Clara, they are inspired to fight to keep their family together.
Filming took place in the summer of 2014 in North Carolina including Charlotte and Concord, North Carolina. When The War Room hit theaters itwas a major box office success making it the number one movie in America. The War Room made $11.4 million, more than double the initial projections and finished second at the box office behind Straight Outta Compton with only 1/3 of the number of theaters and twice the gross revenue per theaters.
But, not too many people enjoyed the movie, critics in particular.gives the film a rating of 38%, based on reviews from 26 critics. Meanwhile, The Christian Post praised the movie, calling it better than previous Christian box-office hits, Courageous and Fireproof. According to Crosswalk.com “it comes as good news that War Room is a step up for the Kendricks, who continue to develop as filmmakers.”
Tom Cruise was minutes away from being killed in the ‘Mena‘ plane crash.
Two people have been killed in a plane crash while filming Tom Cruise’s new movie Mena in Columbia and reports suggest that the Hollywood actor nearly avoided death by a matter of minutes.
The crash, which isb eleived to have been caused by poor visibility, took the lives of veteran Hollywood stunt pilot Alan D. Purwin and Venezuelan pilot Carlos Brel. A third pilot Jimmy Lee Garland survived the crash with serious injuries all over his body.
However, according to the Associated Press, Tom Cruise had been flying the same path as where the accident occurred just 10 minutes before the fatal crash in the Andes Mountains.
Universal Pictures has also released a statement about the death of the pilots:
An aircraft carrying crew members crashed while returning to Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport in Medellin following production wrap on the film Mena resulting in two fatalities. Further details are not available at this time. On behalf of the production, our hearts and prayers go out to the crew members and their families at this difficult time
Pilot is recovering after surviving plane crash on set of Tom Cruise new movie Mena. The only survivor of a Columbian plane crash involving crew members of the upcoming Tom Cruise movie, Mena is slowly recovering but remains in critical condition.
Jimmy Lee Garland was pulled from the wreckage of a twin-engine plane that crashed into a mountain in Medellin, Columbia on Friday. Garland and three other crew members were leaving the set of Mena after filming several scenes during the day.
The head of the hospital where the pilot from Georgia is being treated said he underwent surgery Monday to treat bone fractures.
Garland’s wife and son flew to Medellin to assist in his recovery but are unable to communicate with him because he remains heavily sedated.
Neither Cruise nor director Doug Liman has yet to comment publicly on the accident.
‘Mena’ is based on a true story about Barry Seal, a pilot who, in the 1980s was a gun runner, and drug trafficker who transported contraband for the CIA and Medellin cartel. He was eventually shot and killed in Baton Rouge. The title of the movie comes from Mena, Arkansas where a majority of the drug trafficking took place under the noses of several presidents and governors.

[GERI] African American, in her 30s, Geri is the patient, no-nonsense girlfriend of Byrd. She puts up with Darcy’s harder edges out of sympathy for and loyalty to Byrd. Geri understands that Darcy has had a hard time coming to terms with her son’s death, but also knows that living in the past can be detrimental to shaping one’s future. Geri works at the University (of Georgia), and agrees to help Darcy get an application in past the deadline…SUPPORTING.
[KEVIN JENKINS] A balding businessman in his mid 30s, Kevin Jenkins is a successful accountant and proud father of soon to be 5 sons. After running into Darcy at the super market, Kevin is forced to recollect old memories of his college friend Walker, who committed suicide before graduating. Unsettled by Darcy’s persistence and unwilling to discuss the past, Kevin does his best to fend her off, but once she tracks him down in his workplace he explains everything he can remember about the day Walker died…SUPPORTING. Caucasian. From Georgia. Lives in Birmingham, AL.
[MARK WRIGHT] In his mid 30s, amped up and confident, Mark Wright is a successful franchiser with a persistent coke habit he picked up in college. Once Walker’s close friend, Mark now runs a restaurant franchise that is eerily similar to the one Walker detailed in a business plan that he wrote before his suicide. When Mark is approached by a gun-toting Darcy, his controlled facade disappears, and we see the insecure man beneath the phony smile…SUPPORTING. Open to all ethnic backgrounds. Lives and works in New Orleans.
[DENNIS] 34, hides out alone in the Victorian rental house he’s inhabited since college, growing pot and sporting long, blond dreadlocks. (Deadlocks not a must). Darcy finds Dennis relatively unchanged since back when he and Walker were friends, maybe a touch more paranoid. He’s a little uncomfortable talking about the past, but does his best to explain to Darcy what happened the day of Walker’s suicide…4 speeches & 16 lines, 3 scenes. Caucasian. Lives in Georgia.
[PROFESSOR LATSON] An anthropology professor in his late 30s/early 40s, Professor Latson is Darcy’s direct but understanding boss. Lately he’s been frustrated with Darcy’s erratic behavior, but has the decency to let her miss a few days and take care of her personal matters, because often he sees in Darcy more potential than she sees in herself…3 speeches & 8 lines, 3 scenes. Open to all ethnic backgrounds. Lives in Georgia.
[BUFORD LAPIERRE] In his mid 30s, stout, and with a shock of white hair but the face of a younger man, Buford (Louisiana Cajun) is an old “friend” of Darcy’s son, Walker. Buford always existed on the outer edge of the circle of college friends. So when Darcy finds him in flooded bayou country and starts asking him pointed questions, he’s a little more preoccupied with taking care of his family and has to be pushed to talk about Walker, but what he reveals helps Darcy take another pivotal step on her path…7 speeches & 5 lines, 2 scenes. Caucasian.
[BETH] In her mid 30s and heavily pregnant (can be faked), Beth is Kevin Jenkins’ wife. After running into Darcy at the grocery store, she pleasantly introduces herself and offers her condolences regarding Darcy’s son…1 speech & 3 lines, 1 scene. Caucasian. Lives in Georgia.
[WAITRESS] Working at a truck stop diner, this waitress serves Darcy and Byrd their lunch. Small town Louisiana. She joins a conversation about the unfair water restrictions…2 speeches & 1 line, 2 scenes. Open to all ethnic backgrounds.
[SAM] In his 60s/70s, bald, Sam is Darcy’s next-door neighbor and lives in a rental cottage behind her house. He sneaks out in the middle of the night to water his plants, just like the rest of the neighborhood does…1 speech & 2 lines, 2 scenes (1) Open to all ethnic backgrounds. Lives in Georgia.
[SUE ANN JENKINS] Sue Ann Jenkins, 50s, is Kevin Jenkins’ conservative, more staid mother, living in an upscale home. She hesitantly greets Darcy at her front door, and is not all that pleased to see her, or to help her out…4 lines, 1 scene. Caucasian.
[RECEPTIONIST (2)] In her early 20s wearing too much makeup, this receptionist works at the “Dawg House” offices in New Orleans, and greets Darcy when she arrives for a visit…5 lines, 1 scene. Open to all ethnic backgrounds.
[GUY 1 AND GUY 2] This gruff trucker discusses the unfair water restrictions that have been hurting local towns (small town Louisiana)…3 lines, 1 scene. Suggest for GUY 1 only – we will have candidates read for both GUY 1 and GUY 2 most likely. Should look like a trucker. Open to all ethnic backgrounds and ages.
[WES SANFORD] An elderly man of about 70 with white hair and a glazed look in his eye, Wes Sanford is Darcy’s ex-husband, now living in a nursing home. He’s paid a visit by Darcy who speaks her mind without a response from Wes…1 line, 1 scene. Caucasian. Lives in Jackson, MS
[OFFICE ASSISTANT] This office assistant in her 20s, wearing conservative work clothes, and greets Darcy and Byrd when they arrive to pay Kevin a visit…2 lines, 1 scene. Open to all ethnic backgrounds.
[RECEPTIONIST] This pleasant receptionist checks Darcy in for a visit at the nursing home in Jackson, MS…1 speech, 1 scene. Open to all ethnic backgrounds.

On how he drew inspiration for one of his first auditions: “I went to the urinal, and as I was pissing, I saw that someone had written ‘Hi, Cookie!’ on the wall. Those words were staring at me, as I stood there. I had just finished playing the Cook in a production of ‘Mother Courage,’ and I had done it with a Scottish accent. Cook; cookie. ‘I’ll do the Iago monologue in a Scottish accent,’ I decided, even though that wasn’t how I had prepared it… It’s funny. I haven’t thought about that for years and years. I’m not saying what I saw was a sign or anything. But maybe I did sort of take it that way, and that helped me.”
On how he prepares for each and every acting role: “I go over the words again and again and again and again. Hundreds of times. It’s more of a doing than a thinking thing. I have thoughts about the characters, I learn about them, but that’s not necessarily where the majority of the work gets done.”
On working as a bartender before an actor: “I enjoyed the bar. But, god, I really, really, really wanted to act.”

Acting may not be for everyone. Hollywood and British actor Tom Conti argues that acting is “a waste of a life”.
Tom Conti is an award winning actor. He won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play in 1979 for his performance in Whose Life Is It Anyway?. He has also been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for the 1983 film, Reuben, Reuben. Most recently he appeared in the Christopher Nolan version of Batman, Dark Knight Rises.
You would think an actor who has worked on so many movies, theater productions, and TV shows would love the fact that he’s an actor? But, that could not be further from the truth.

In an interview with Telegraph, the actor explained that acting is a waste of a life. “Acting is a waste of a life,” he tells The Telegraph. “There are so many actors now – 85,000 in the UK, but only a few hundred in work on any one day. I meet people at the stage door with a young child in tow and they say, ‘how can we help our child to be an actor?”
But, that’s not the only problem he has with acting. The Academy Award nominated actor revealed that he has a major problem with actor unions.
When he joined in the 1960s, actors had to prove experience before they could get the Equity card, “so young girls would be forced to dance in clubs in Morocco in bra and panties to get a card. That was bad. Nowadays, if a cast member has a problem on one of my productions, I will take it up for them and fight for them. It’s often more effective.”

Here’s why New York’s new $15 minimum wage for fast food workers will benefit aspiring actors.
Did you know actor, director, writer and producer James Franco worked at McDonald’s before becoming an actor? In fact, the actor he argued it helped him become a better actor.
He writes, “McDonald’s was there for me. When no one else was.” Franco says his late-night job at McDonald’s was the first job he’d ever had where he didn’t read at work, but he was able to train as an actor.
In high school, I was fired from a coffee shop for reading behind the counter and from a golf course for reading while driving the cart on the driving range…I refrained from reading on the job, but soon started putting on fake accents with the customers to practice for my scenes in acting class.
On Thursday, New York state governor Andrew Cuomo announced the formal approval of a $15-an-hour minimum wage for fast food workers across New York. The news comes after a panel tasked with evaluating fast food wages suggested the increase earlier this summer.

The news has many people upset, but supporters of the increase says it will raise the standard of living for thousands of fast food workers, who generally live below the poverty line. In fact, 60 percent of fast-food workers receive public assistance in some form.
But, will this raise productivity? Possibly. The Washington Post reported on several happiness studies and found that in general, life satisfaction goes up as minimum wage increases. Therefore, happier workers creates better experiences for customers.
But, how will this impact actors? According to Chron.com, the lowest 10 percent of actors made $8.79 an hour, therefore a pay increase for fast food workers can be an easy and profitable way for actors to make additional income on the side.
