CBS: Nancy Drew ‘Will NOT Be White’

0

CBS plans on not casting white women to play Nancy Drew on the new TV reboot.

Nancy Drew first appeared in books in 1930 and was created by Edward Stratemeyer. The books were ghostwritten by several authors and published under the fake name Carolyn Keene. The character evolved in the past 80 years and CBS plans on changing the story even more with their new TV series.

According to CBS, the new Nancy Drew tv series will be more diverse. According to The Hollywood Reporter interview, CBS executives plan on making the lead character more diverse.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

“She is diverse, that is the way she is written,” the executive toldTHR immediately following his time in front of the press at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour Tuesday. While Geller said it was too early in the process to explain just what he meant by diverse — whether Nancy is African-American, Asian-American or Latino, he said it would hinge on finding the right actress for the part. “[She will] not [be] Caucasian,” he stressed. “I’d be open to any ethnicity.”

This news should come as a surprise as more and more networks plan on creating more shows for non-white audiences. But, it is surprising that CBS, a network that has been less likely to hire non-whites for their TV shows, plans on recasting a character that has been traditionally white another race.

CBS announced in October they were in pre-production for a new Nancy Drew series. The series which is still in it’s early stages, is described as a modern day look at the character from the comic book series. Now in her 30s, Nancy is a detective for the NYPD where she solves crimes using her observational skills while trying to fit in a modern world.

The Star Wars actor that played Jar Jar Binks says fans’ negative reaction hurt him: “when your work is criticized negatively, you feel a hit.”

So many people hate the Star Wars prequels because of Jar Jar Binks. But people often forget that their was an actual actor under that CGI costume and his name was Ahmed Best and he’s spent over a decade dealing with Jar Jar’s reputation with many people arguing it ruined his acting career forever.

A new interview with Ahmed Best conducted by Jamie Stangroom for a new YouTube series called These Are The Actors You’re Looking For, where he hunts down D list actors who appeared in movies and asks them questions.

“Star Wars was my first ‘most hated’ title in anything really. It was painful.”

Most of the people he’s interviewed have been happy to discuss their connection with the biggest franchise in history. however, the ten-minute conversation with Ahmed Best is pretty miserable. In fact, a majority of the interview discusses how fans have bashed the actor for playing Jar Jar Binks in the prequel movies. “Star Wars was my first ‘most hated’ title in anything really. It was painful. One of the biggest reasons I took it was because of the challenge of it—there was no Andy Serkis and Gollum, Navi from Avatar, Martians, John Carter.” He adds, “I was to be the template for this, so I was kinda working with George to pioneer this new character form of acting and storytelling. On set we were all just so focused on the challenge of it and having so much fun that the post-Star Wars stuff was a surprise. Even though you play characters, you put a lot of your own personality into it, you get emotionally and personally invested in the work that you do, it’s your work and you take pride in it. So when your work is criticized negatively, you feel a hit.”

I was kinda working with George to pioneer this new character form of acting and storytelling. On set we were all just so focused on the challenge of it and having so much fun that the post-Star Wars stuff was a surprise.

It wasn’t only the fan reaction that affected Best. It was the merchandising behind some of the products surrounding Jar Jar Binks. Apparently, one particular item was so bad that the marketers apologized to him. “The worst one was a lollipop dispenser, that was ridiculous, I saw that thing and ran. That was bad, the head of marketing actually called me to apologize for that one,” Best said.

“…it’s your work and you take pride in it. So when your work is criticized negatively, you feel a hit.”

Watching the interview you cannot help but feel really bad for the guy. Especially when JJ Abrams admitted he wanted to kill off the character in the latest Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie. During his interview with Vanity Fair for the magazine’s Star Wars cover story, Abrams pointed to a framed still from The Force Awakens and said: “I have a thought about putting Jar Jar Binks’s bones in the desert there. I’m serious! Only three people will notice, but they’ll love it.”

For those Star Wars fans that still hate Jar Jar Binks, Best said he will never reprise his role in a Disney remake of the Star Wars series.

10 Things Every Background Extra Should Know Before Going to Set

Here are 10 things every background extra should know before going to set.

We recently had the amazing opportunity to talk with Baywatch the movie casting director about extra work. And one of the most common question we often receive is what it’s like to work on set as a background extra. Well, we asked Casting TaylorMade’s head casting director Heather Taylor what are some questions background actor should ask before they go on set and this is what she had to say:

Do you believe background extras should ask casting directors questions before going on set?

If so, what are some questions a background extra should ask before saying yes?

If a Background Performer has any questions I highly recommend that they ask these questions before confirming to a booking, not right before going to set.
I do not feel that there is any right or wrong questions to ask.

“I do not feel that there is any right or wrong questions to ask.”

For some people it might be there first time working so they might have a lot more questions to ask compared to someone who works regularly as a Background Performer.
When my Associate, Kalas, and I book our Performers we reach out to them personally via text / phone or email and we certainly get several questions which we are always extremely happy to answer- we want everyone to be as informed as they possibly can be- as it makes the whole process smoother for everyone involved from Directors to our BG Performers and everyone else in between.

The most commonly asked question– virtually impossible for us Casting Directors to answer is “What time will I start / finish work?”

Exact start times are not even something our Directors know until the day before, and that is not until the prelim goes out- which depending on the day, could be anywhere as early as first thing in the morning or as late as an last hour before wrap (the end of the day).
End times are always impossible to determine. There is no way to know how long or short a scene could last, as unexpected things can / will always arise and we never want to make a promise to our talent that we cannot keep.
Also, do stay away from asking obvious questions. If the date / rate is written clearly in a post it is a little unpolished looking when someone asks those obvious question, as they have already been stated somewhere.
