Here are the three stages of acting stereotypes and how actors break them.
If you haven’t seen Jason Bourne or The Night Of, then you’re missing out one of Hollywood’s best leading actor, Riz Ahmed.
Riz Ahmed was born on December 1, 1982 in London, England. He is an actor and writer, known for Four Lions (2010), Nightcrawler (2014) and The Road to Guantanamo (2006) and most recently, The Night Of. Rizgraduated from Oxford University with a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics and later enrolled into London’s Central School of Speech and Drama.
Currently, he is on tour promoting his new movie Jason Bourne and his new TV show The Night Of and during an interview with BBC Radio, Riz Ahmed explains the three stages every non-white actor has to go through in order to break stereotypes in Hollywood. He explains actors must first play into the stereotype, then transform that stereotype and finally do a role that has nothing to do with those stereotypes. For example, Viola Davis starred in The Help, a stereotypical role about a black maid who gets help from a white woman. This role, while stereotypical, led to her biggest acting job yet, How To Get Away with Murder, a non-stereotypical role that breaks the stereotypes of a female defense attorney.
It is a transformation and stages that Riz Ahmed had to personally go through while building his acting career. It is a great explanation and eye opening look into Hollywood’s casting process.

This may sound like a stupid question but, if you’re cast in a significant role for a full length film do you memorize ALL of your lines prior to shooting? Or do professional actors just “sort of” memorize them and then formally memorize the small chunks as you shoot them each day?
Well, this question was recently asked on Reddit and the working actors shared some amazing insight on how they easily memorize a ton of lines for a major feature film.
Go Scene by Scene
I go scene by scene memorizing. I divide it all up with sticky notes or anything that can divide the scenes and I go over them over and over again. Memorizing day of or night before sounds absolutely insane, especially with a really huge part.
I can understand with tv shows though when they are constantly shooting new episodes every week. There’s definitely no time to memorize all that all the time except I would assume for really long monologues or something. –whacafan
Don’t try to memorize
I honestly don’t even try to memorize. I just act out my lines. And usually I just have memorized it by reading it enough.
I’ve been in the lead of a few things while also directing. I never got why people waited until the night before of the day of to memorize their lines. I will act out my lines once a week, and then when it’s closer to production, I will ramp it up. I find if I say the words enough, then I can just say the words naturally. And after a few weeks, I have usually memorized the entire script. – CinematicRacer14
Memorizing your lines will hurt you
No need to memorize your lines.
By doing so you will actually hurt yourself more than help. Your delivery will be so canned and false you will get “line-locked” and the neuropathways you’ve drilled will be so stuck, the other actors will have a hard time getting you to really listen to them.
Simply, read over them at the beginning of that day and don’t worry about being word perfect. DONT IMPROVISE either. Just don’t stress too much about every single little word. You want your delivery to be natural and you want to be listening and responding honestly to your scene partners. – thechiassonator
Figure out what you’re doing
I learn my lines in the script I initially receive by just crafting the damn thing which most basically comes down to “what am I doing, what am I thinking, and why am I doing and thinking those things?” Paraphrasing helps as well. You just have to be flexible because “locked script” is an oxymoron in film. Chances are you will get re-writes if you have a major role and they will sometimes come at the last minute. But still, it isn’t all that big a deal if you’ve crafted the original well as long as you don’t have some kind of mental block or are just bad at memorizing because you’ll already know the character, the relationships, and the given circumstances which may or may not change slightly from having done that.
While all of this advice is amazing. Nothing is as great as Bryan Cranston’s secret to memorizing lines.
50 Cent bashes the show of Powerafter showing his penis in a NSFW scene.
What would you do if you’re watching TV and all of a sudden you see your naked body? While this sounds frightening to most people, this exact situation happened to rapper/actor, 50 Cent. Even though he is one of the executive producers and actor in Power, it looks like 50 Cent had no idea his magic stick was going to appear on this week’s episode of the hit crime drama.
In the hit TV series’ 50 Cent plays “Kanan” on the hit TV series and reprised his role as the brutal gangster to blast Power creator Courtney A. Kemp on Instagram. 50 Cent was foaming mad that Kemp didn’t censor his penis during that scene where he proved he was ready to get back in the streets and commit a robbery.
“This sh*t wasn’t in the first three edits. All of a sudden wala..magic [stick]. Nah, y’all got me f*cked up,” Fif wrote on a now-deleted Instagram post captured by Bossip. “So now my auntie G can’t watch Power because my dick is debuting tonight. SMH you motherf*ckers. I wish somebody say some stupid sh*t right now. I am Kanan motherf*cker. Try me.”
The rapper/actor continued his rant by bashing the show’s creator, continuing, “Don’t kiss my cheek, kiss my ass. This sh*t is not fun. Tell the people from STARZ stop calling my phone. You call now. I don’t give a f*ck if you on the plane, b*tch.”
At this point it is unclear whether or not Kemp made that decision, but she did respond to 50 cent on social media and said Curtis Jackson isn’t being at all truthful. “Ghost must die and 50 Cent must lie,” Kemp wrote to 50 Cent. The creator of Power went on to say that 50 Cent actually signed a nudity waiver, adding “You knew what we were shooting during 404. Yeah, that’s your [eggplant emoji]. You signed the waiver like everybody else.”
Sounds like 50 Cent was just trying to create free publicity for Power, which recently renewed for two more seasons after breaking records with this season’s premiere.
Millions of people went to the theaters this weekend to check out the new Joker in Suicide Squad. But, apparently Jared Leto’s The Joker was barely in the movie despite his over the top antics and method acting shenanigans on set, including sending the cast used condoms, and never breaking character between scenes.
Leto has reportedly said many of his scenes were cut, which makes us think this may have been all promotion for the movie for the movie. But, Jared Leto wants you to know that his scenes were so great they could be part of a new movie.
Leto spoke about his deleted scenes and his push for an R-rating during a BBC Radio 1 interview and he thinks his scenes were cut because they were too good.
Leto said: “I think that I brought so much to the table in every scene that it was probably more about filtering all of the insanity, because I wanted to give a lot of options, and I think there’s probably enough footage in this film for a Joker movie.”
Leto also reveals in the interview that he told director David Ayer they should make the movie rated R. “It felt like, if a film was ever going to be rated R, it should be the one about the villains.” However, Ayer said in the past that the movie was planned as a PG-13 production from the very beginning.

Filming incentives play a crucial role in convincing big-budget studio productions where they choose to shoot. In fact, filming incentives can ultimately boost or even destroy an aspiring actor’s acting career.
What are filming incentives?
Filming incentives started in the 1990s as many TV shows and movies traveled to Canada to film their productions. Since then, states have offered increasingly competitive film incentives to attract productions from other states and even countries. The structure, type and size of the film incentives vary from state to state. Many film incentives include tax credits and exemptions, and other incentive packages including cash grants, fee-free locations, or other perks. Many people argue that movie production incentives provide increased economic activity and job opportunities. While others argue that the cost of the incentives outweigh the benefits and say filming incentives are a form welfare to the rich.
Do filming incentives work?
For example, Louisiana’s filming incentives was capped last year for the first time in history. It’s important to highlight that their filming incentives were capped, not canceled. In fact, the fund limit for TV shows and movies was set to $180 million a year, which still makes it among the most generous in the world. However, despite having a large filming incentive, the number of crew jobs available in Louisiana have dropped 75% as crew workers are traveling to Atlanta, Georgia where their film tax credits are uncapped. So why did so many film crew workers leave Louisiana? According to a New Orleans film crew workers’ union partly attributed this to a perception that the incentive had in fact been completely cancelled.
How rumors can destroy a film industry
Crew jobs have slightly increased and Louisiana’s film production looks better than it did in the past. However, the perception of a dying film industry can hurt not only the state’s film industry but the actors that live and work in that area. For example, when rumors surfaced that filming incentives in Louisiana were coming to an end, film crew workers immediately left NOLA and traveled to Atlanta. The risk of financial uncertainty is enough to scare away producers who are looking to get the most they can for their risky filmmaking investments. Consequently, when states make short term commitments to film tax credit programs, producers question the financial commitment and look elsewhere to film their productions.
Why Georgia’s film industry is on fire
This is why Georgia’s film incentives boost the state’s film industry. Their commitment to funding production’s with a 30% tax credit and the Governor’s dedication to keeping the filming incentives helps promote more TV shows and feature films to film in the Peach State. For instance, Pennsylvania was on track to have a budding film industry however, a long delay in the renewal of the state tax incentives meant producers were going to look elsewhere to finance their productions. In addition, California’s capped film incentives has also lead to an immediate drop in film crew workers and productions filming in the filmmaking capital of the world.
Ultimately, film incentives play a major role in a state’s film industry. They can make an actor’s career by bringing new job opportunities however, a single rumor of financial uncertainty can have an aspiring actor looking for a new career.
