New research into on-screen diversity shows very little to no progress, counting 31% of characters in 2015’s biggest movies as female, 26.3 percent non-white and less than 1% LGBT.
The study, by the Media, Diversity and Social Change Initiative at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, is an annual project that began in 2007 and breaks down the demographics in the 100 most popular films at the US box office.
Researchers found that out of 4,730 speaking roles or named characters in the year’s top films, 68.6% were male and 31.4% female.
Women were also found to be more likely to be naked or in revealing clothing, with 30.2 percent barely clothes, compared to 7.7 % of men. The number of movies directed by women were also unsettling with 92.5 % of movies directed by men.
There was also little change in the number of non-white characters with 73.7% white, 12.2% black, 5.3% Latino and 3.9% Asian.
No Asian leads or co-leads were found in the year’s top performing 100 feature films, and less than 10% of the directors films were non-white.
LGBT characters barely existed in feature films.
LGBT characters were found in only 32 of the 4,370 speaking or named characters in 2015’s top films. Not a single LGBT identified lead or co-lead character was featured.

But, before Stranger Things was a hit TV series, Heather Taylor, the unknown hero and background acting director, was tirelessly working on the series. We were luckily able to catch up with the casting director to discuss what it was like working on the Netflix series, what were the biggest challenges, and what it was like to cast so many high school actors.
Heather Taylor/Facebook
How does it feel to see Stranger Things become an overnight success on Netflix?
The moment I met the creators and the cast I knew it was going to be giant success. These kids have the most incredible personalities and are so unique- they also embody the traits of their characters, and are fantastic actors- thats a trifecta right there. There are no current shows out there that have a main cast of almost all kids, unless you’re watching Disney or Nickelodeon (which is targeted for one specific age group). This show felt relatable to every age, from kids to adults. I would get totally lost from the outside world when I would read the scripts, not to mention how much everyone loves the 80s (including myself), how could this not be a hit!
What was your experience as a casting director on ‘Stranger Things’?
Being the extras casting director on “Stranger Things” was probably the most fun experience to date. Everyone was so hands on and it was almost like a game. We started casting a little over a month before we started shooting. Kalas and I requested that about 800 Males (Kids and Adults) should stop cutting their hair and let it grow, and that they should follow up with us by sending photos when they felt their hair had reached the right length for the 80s.
With these photos we compiled everyone into age groups and then put them into binders. Whenever we had to pick out specific roles we would go into our “Stranger Things” binder database and sit down with the various directors, and of course the Duffer Brothers, to select the right person for each respective role.
There are a lot of high school scenes that really showcased the talent of the background actors on ‘Stranger Things’, have any exciting stories about working on set of ‘Stranger Things’?
Thank you so much! That means so much to us! No crazy stories. Our background holding was in the cafeteria of the school and each time we all gathered, there was always such a nostalgic feeling like we were back at school ourselves. There was no WiFi in the cafeteria either so it was a great way for us to all get lost in the moment and feel like we were back in the 80s. Everyone seemed to form into groups, some would color, play cards, or just talk all day, even though everyone of course had a cell phone, I rarely saw people just isolate and binge on their phone. There really was a sense of togetherness – It was just loads of fun and laughter.
What were the Duffer Brothers like?
They are Epic, Creative Geniuses, and Kids at Heart – it was always so much fun & fascinating watching them work together. They are so mentally connected, you can tell they have been imagining and planning the world of “Stranger Things” since they were kids themselves.
This was all their vision and they invited us to be a part of it, Kalas & I are honored / forever grateful for this experience. It was everything you could imagine it would be, plus more!
Any advice you would like to share to aspiring actors and fans of ‘Stranger Things’?
Don’t cut your hair and study your 80s trivia – if you are not an 80s kid like myself, you should now focus on becoming one.
If you’re interested in working on Stranger Things season 2, make sure to follow Casting TaylorMade on Facebook.

Is Greta Van Susteren’s departure from Fox News the beginning of the end?
20 years ago, Fox News’ went on the air. At that point in time non-Hispanic whites comprised about 60 percent of all live births in the United States. 19 years later, that number had shrunk to 53, bringing the long predicted end to America’s white majority, which is Fox News’ largest viewer demography. And now that the demography is steadily shrinking, a Fox news is facing a up hill battle. And it does not look like it is going to get any better.
WASHINGTON MAY 1 – Kim Kardashian and Greta Van Susteren arrive at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner May 1, 2010 in Washington, D.C.
Gret Van Susteren has left Fox News after working on the network for 14 years. Van Susteren, host of “On The Record” on the No. 1-rated cable news network, had her last show on Thursday. On Tuesday, it was announced she would leave the network. She wrote on Facebook, “has not felt like home to me for a few years.” In addition, Fox News deleted her blog, Gretawire.
WASHINGTON – APRIL 15: Fox News anchor Greta Van Susteren at the tax day tea party rally at the Washington monument on April 15, 2010 in Washington, D.C.
It’s important to point out that Van Susteren did really well in the ratings but, failed to compare to Bill O’Reilly’s “O’Reilly Factor”. If Bill O’Reilly were to leave the network Fox’s ratings would be suffer a major blow. And the news reporter has revealed that he was getting tired of the daily nightly grind. However, his lucrative side business in the TV industry and book publishing trade, would mean the end of a marketing empire.
Sean Hannity could also leave Fox News, although that might depend on the future of the November election. He has been working closely with Donald Trump and a position within the White House would not be that far fetched, if Donald Trump becomes the next president.
In addition, the Fox News president Roger Ailes quickly left the network last month. Ailes was plagued with controversy after former host Gretchen Carlson sued in July for sexual harassment. That case has now been settled with a reported $20 million payout to the plaintiff.
At the end of the day, all major networks come to an end. One thing we do know for sure is that we will not see Van Susteren reporting on Fox News anytime soon.

Zayn Malick is developing a TV show “inspired by” his days a boy band member.
According to a press release sent out by NBC on Tuesday, his show will be called Boys and will follow a boy band as they become famous.
According to a press release from NBC Universal, the series follows “the formation of a hugely successful boy band and captures all the excitement, competition and fun, but also provides an inside look into the pressure that follows.”
The show will be produced by Dick Wolf, the guy behind Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago Justice, etc.
Zayn says he is pretty excited about the project. “Dick Wolf is a legend, and the opportunity to work with him and NBC to create a compelling drama series is awesome.”
NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke said in a statement that, “Zayn certainly brings an authentic point of view to this world where kids are catapulted into fame at a dizzying speed.” Noelle Wolf emphasized that casting will be extremely important to the new TV show.
Basically a One Direction TV show is coming soon.

More reports of creepy clowns trying to lure kids into the woods surface.
As if Hollywood is taking marketing to a whole new level, a South Carolina town is warning residents about clowns hiding in the woods. In the last few weeks we have seen reports of a clown hanging around the woods by an apartment complex in Greenville, allegedly attempting to lure children according to reports.
A letter put up by the apartment complex including the following statement.
At no time should a child be alone at night, or walking in the roads or wooded areas at night. Also if a person or persons are seen you are to immediately call the police.
Another incident has been reported on Tuesday, this time around an apartment complex in Greensboro, South Carolina. The difference this time a witness decided to chase the clown with a machete.
A statement from police in Greensboro, North Carolina, says officers responded to a 911 call Tuesday from an apartment complex, where a witness reported seeing a person wearing a clown mask, red curly wig, yellow spotted shirt, blue clown pants and clown shoes coming out of the woods.
Spokeswoman Susan Danielsen said another witness wielding a machete chased the person, who disappeared into the woods. Officers searched the area, but couldn’t find anyone matching the description. She says no children were involved in the incident.
This news comes as Hollywood is currently working on a IT reboot feature film.
The new IT (2017) feature film centers around a small town in Maine, where seven children known as The Losers Club come face to face with life problems, bullies and a monster that takes the shape of a clown called Pennywise. The upcoming feature film features Finn Wolfhard, Bill Skarsgård, and Javier Botet. Skarsgard will play Pennywise, the evil monster who terrorizes a group of kids in a small Maine town. Lieberher will play the leader of the group, who was portrayed by Jonathan Brandis in the original 1991 film.
New Line recently announced the movie, directed by “Mama” helmer Andres Muschietti, would bow on Sept. 8, 2017. Muschietti came on board following Cary Fukunaga’s departure from the project last year, and quickly turned around a rewrite of the script.
It’s important to point out that Hollywood has a history of starting viral “news” stories in order to promote feature films.
In fact, the feature film The Gallows created a viral hoax that you might remember as “The Charlie Charlie Challenge”. the insane that social media trend #CharlieCharlieChallenge, which teenagers use pencils like a Ouija board to summon a demon.
As the video shows above, this Charlie Charlie Challenge thing comes from a scene in the upcoming movie ‘The Gallows,’ a horror movie that was filmed before this challenge started. They are obviously behind the social media trend.
Some people took this #CharlieCharlieCharlieChallenge very seriously. One priest in Philadelphia wrote an open letter to students about the dangers of this “demonic” challenge. When it actuality it was all a giant marketing campaign.
At the end of the day, I wouldn’t take any chances.

Shia LaBeouf reveals personal details about his Hollywood acting career.
Shia LaBeouf recently opened up about his career and his life in the Hollywood spotlight. In a new interview, the controversial actor opens up about getting sober to working his way back into the good graces of Hollywood following multiple arrests, erratic behavior, and a plagiarism scandal. LaBeouf, 30, also has no problem talking about his experience with legendary directors and working in Hollywood.
1. Shia LaBeouf was disappointed with working with Steven Spielberg.
s_bukley / Shutterstock.com
“I grew up with this idea, if you got to Spielberg, that’s where it is,” LaBeouf tells Variety, having worked with the director on multiple projects, including Disturbia, Transformers, Eagle Eye, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. “You get there, and you realize you’re not meeting the Spielberg you dream of. You’re meeting a different Spielberg, who is in a different stage in his career. He’s less a director than he is a f**king company.”
2. LaBeouf preferred working with Michael Bay than Spielberg.
Debby Wong / Shutterstock.com
“I don’t like the movies that I made with Spielberg,” LaBeouf says bluntly. “The only movie that I liked that we made together was the Transformers one [which Spielberg produced]. I prepped for a year and a half on [2008’s Indiana Jones film]. And then the movie comes out, and it’s your fault. That sh*t hurt bad.”
3. Criticism of LaBeouf’s acting in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps personally affected him.
“I didn’t like going in public, because I had to face my failures constantly,” he says about not being proud of his own feature films.
4. Shia LaBeouf reveals he hasn’t had a drink in nearly a year and is attending AA meetings.
“I got a Napoleonic complex,” he says about his alcohol issues, acknowledging that part of his heavy drinking was “posturing.” “I start drinking and I feel smaller than I am, and I get louder than I should. It’s just not for me, dude.”
“You don’t touch it,” he now says. “Alcohol or any of that sh*t will send you haywire. I can’t f**k with none of it. I’ve got to keep my head low.”
5. LaBeouf nearly landed a role on Suicide Squad but, his reputation hurt his acting career.

“The character was different initially,” LaBeouf says. “Then Will [Smith] came in, and the script changed a bit. That character and Tom [Hardy’s] character [later played by Joel Kinnaman] got written down to build Will up.”
“I don’t think Warner Bros. wanted me,” he adds. “I went in to meet, and they were like, ‘Nah, you’re crazy. You’re a good actor, but not this one.’ It was a big investment for them.”
6. Shia LaBeouf realized there’s a double standard when it comes to male and female actors in Hollywood.
vipflash / Shutterstock.com
“It’s a double standard, for sure,” he says. “Women require grace for longevity. I don’t think men require grace. You can be Mickey Rourke.”
7. LaBeouf regrets describing himself as a method actor.

“The word is getting embarrassing,” he says. “You don’t hear about female method actors. The whole thing has turned into weird, false masculinity sh*t.”
8. Shia LaBeouf got matching tattoos of Missy Elliot on his legs.
“I don’t love Missy Elliott like I wanna get two Missy Elliott tattoos,” LaBeouf says. “But you’re in a tattoo parlor, and [shrugs shoulders] peer pressure.”
9. LaBeouf says he is still working on using his “crazy” in his acting performances.
cinemafestival / Shutterstock.com
“I’m learning how to distill my ‘crazy’ into something manageable, that I can shape and deliver on the day,” he says.
10. Shia LaBeouf is not interested in any acting awards including the Academy Awards.
PAN Photo Agency / Shutterstock.com
“The Oscars are about politics,” he says. “I gotta earn my way back. It’s not about who is the best. I’m not that guy for a long time — for a long, long time.” “I’m good with that, though,” he adds. “Sometimes that sh*t is a curse.”

Fans of The Walking Dead have probably been reading news from spoiler websites – The Spoiling Dead Fans in particular – may have been given a strong impression that Abraham is the person who dies at the hands of Negan in the seventh season premiere. That website suggested that Michael Cudlitz, who plays Abraham, has not been spotted on set since they shot the season premiere.
However, last week, Michael Cudlitz may have inadvertently ruled himself out as the victim in an interview with Popsugar, where he specifically says that he will continue to live on.
“[Denise’s] death spurs on a whole bunch of other stuff, and then the audience knows that Abraham will continue for a while now. Now we get to see what a world with Negan and Abraham both in it will be like. That’s something we don’t see in the graphic novels.”
Given the credibility of The Spoiling Dead Fans’ spoilers, some may have thought that Cudlitz was trying to throw fans by lying in the interview. However, as The Huffington Post spotted, the latest teaser trailer seems to confirm that Abraham does, in fact, live.
Shia LaBeouf was nearly cast in Suicide Squad until Warner Bros. said no.
Shia LaBeouf did an amazing interview with Variety to promote the release of his new movie American Honey, a low-budget indie movie where LaBeouf got twelve tattoos, two of which were the same portrait of Missy Elliot. But, probably the most interesting part of the interview was that LaBeouf almost re-teamed with Fury director David Ayer for Suicide Squad:
LaBeouf […] admits that he’s no longer on Hollywood’s wish list for major blockbusters. After Fury in 2014, director David Ayer approached him for Suicide Squad, for a role that eventually went to Scott Eastwood. “The character was different initially,” LaBeouf says. “Then Will [Smith] came in, and the script changed a bit. That character and Tom [Hardy’s] character [later played by Joel Kinnaman] got written down to build Will up.” LaBeouf says the studio vetoed his casting. “I don’t think Warner Bros. wanted me. I went in to meet, and they were like, ‘Nah, you’re crazy. You’re a good actor, but not this one.’ It was a big investment for them.”
It seems like Shia LaBeouf would have been perfect for the feature film especially for his history of outrageous antics, which would have played well for the Suicide Squad marketing team.
Seriously, do you remember when Shia LaBeouf attended the 2014 Berlin Film Festival with a paper bag over his head that said “I am not famous anymore”?
Shia Labeouf (cinemafestival / Shutterstock.com)
Since 2014, LaBeouf has been working hard on his performance art. In fact, he live-streamed himself watching all of his movies for three days and hung out in an elevator for 24 hours and then went hitchhiking. Not to mention the fact he cut up his face while method acting for Fury, leaving permanent scars on his cheek.
When you think about it, Shia LaBeouf could have probably done a better job than Jared Leto as The Joker. Maybe, Warner Bros. will reboot the movie franchise with LaBeouf, especially considering Leto reportedly said he was “tricked” into playing the Joker.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s daughter poops on his neck as he tried to give her inspiring advice.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson may be Hollywood’s most popular actor and nearly every movie the actor stars in turns to Box Office gold. So when Dayne tried to give his baby girl Jasmine a motivational speech, we would expect for her to be just as excited as we would have been – except that she’s a baby, so her interests are pretty simple.
It’s Labor Day. One of my favorite holidays as we celebrate the blue collar American worker and their contributions to our country thru labor and sweat.
In the spirit of Labor Day, I had an amazing philosophical conversation w/ my baby girl about the value of hard work and how respect is given when it’s earned.
I told her, “Baby girl when you grow up, you get out there and dent the universe thru hard work and sweat. And always make sure you do it in a positive way with class, dignity and respect”.
She responded by poo’ing on me in this moment as she plays her favorite game, “Drum time on daddy’s big head”. It was a good talk.#HappyLaborDay #TheJohnsons #GoodTalksWithDaddy”
Sunday marked the 10-year anniversary of crocodile hunter Steve Irwin’s death at the age of 44.
Irwin was shooting a documentary when a stingray barb pierced his heart.
To honor her father, 18-year-old Bindi posted this amazing throwback photo of the two on Instagram. The caption reads, “You’ll be my hero for my entire existence. I love you more than words can describe.”
If that doesn’t make you cry crocodile tears, Steve’s parents, recently released a letter Steve wrote to them when he was 32. Here’s the letter in full:
Dear Dad and Mum,
Probably one of the most unfortunate things in a “Bloke’s Life” is that it takes over 30 years to realize how essential you have been to build my character, my ethics and, most importantly, my happiness.
At 32, I am finally starting to figure it out, in good times and in bad — you were there; you’re [sic] strength and endurance to raise me will not go unrewarded. My love for you is my strength!
For the rest of my life I will reflect on the unbelievably GREAT times we’ve shared and will continue to share. You’re my best friends!”
