Marvel is ramping up production for their upcoming “Black Widow” movie and now casting lead speaking roles for the forthcoming feature.
Black Widow movie:
Since 2012, Marvel has secretly set up their “Black Widow” movie. Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow movie was introduced in 2010 with “Iron Man,” and she was a major hit with fans and moviegoers. Although Marvel seemed interested, for years, there was no real news of a solo movie. It was not until January 2018 when Marvel Studios hired “Blacklist” screenwriter Jac Schaeffer is working on a movie script. Filming is set to begin in June, and it is believed “Black Widow” will be a part of Marvel’s 2020 movie slate.

In 2004, Lionsgate Entertainment announced that a “Black Widow” motion picture, featuring Natasha Romanova version, was in the script stage by screenwriter-director David Hayter. Lionsgate later dropped the project. The Ultimate version of Black Widow appears in the “Ultimate Avengers” animated direct-to-video movie, and it’s a sequel, Ultimate Avengers.
Scarlett Johansson portrays Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting in 2010. Johansson made her debut appearance in “Iron Man 2.” She was cast after a scheduling conflict forced Emily Blunt to drop the role. Johannsson reprised her role in “The Avengers,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Captain Marvel” and “Avengers: Endgame.”
Feige showed interest in doing a solo “Black Widow” movie in September 2010 and in February 2014, development work had begun on it, with Jac Schaeffer and Ned Benson hired to write the script.
It is important to note, most Marvel franchises start with an origin story, introducing a new character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a select few cases, such as “Black Panther” or “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” the leading character first appeared in a major feature film as a secondary character or a small role. But “Black Widow” is different, she has been a lead character since the very beginning. Her backstory was already explored in “The Avengers” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” as a result, “Black Widow” is a new venture for the Marvel franchise.
It begs the question – how will Marvel handle “Black Widow’s character and storyline in the upcoming feature film. There have been several rumors that the fill will be an origin story for Marvel’s super spy, exploring how she joined the Marvel S.H.I.E.L.D. in the very beginning. It is a major reason why many fans got excited about the idea of “Black Widow” being an R-Rated movie, they believe the story of an assassin should be handled in a more mature way than a traditional Marvel movie. That said, the film could be set in a new world reeling from “Avengers: Endgame” feature film, giving Black Widow will have a leading role in that upcoming film. Whatever it could be, the seeds for “Black Widow” will most certainly already have been set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That makes it the perfect time to revisit everything the Marvel Cinematic Universe has revealed about “Black Widow.”
Who is Black Widow:
LOS ANGELES – APR 23: Scarlett Johansson arrives to the Marvel Studios ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ World Premiere on April 23, 2018 in Hollywood, CA – Image ( DFree / Shutterstock.com)
According to the feature film “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Natalia Alianovna Romanoff, also known as Natasha Romanoff, was born in Stalingrad in 1984. At a young age, she enrolled in the Red Room, a brainwashing and spy-training program, which turned young girls into skilled agents and assassins. Scenes of Black Widow’s training are shown in “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” in flashback scenes triggered by Scarlet Witch’s telepathic manipulations. In those scenes, Natasha saw herself in a school, being trained in ballet alongside other students, watched over by spies. The visions became increasingly disturbing, moving from ballet to killing someone. Black Widow’s training was overseen by a character who broke the unworthy students and focused her attention to those students who were talented to make them killers.
According to “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the Red Room has a final graduation ceremony where their students are sterilized. “It’s efficient,” Black Widow recalled when revealing this to Bruce Banner. “One less thing to worry about. The one thing that might matter more than a mission. It makes everything easier. Even killing.” As shown in the visions, Natasha did not submit to the program, by choosing to fail her assignments to postpone her graduation.
Once she graduated, Black Widow became one of the KGB’s most lethal agents and assassins. She became popular, and one line of dialogue in “The Avengers” implies that she willingly traded her skills to anyone who would pay for them. Hawkeye was tased to kill her. Fortunately, he changed his mind and offered Black Widow a chance to join S.H.I.E.L.D. instead. A recent Marvel Cinematic Universe has confirmed that this happened in 1998 when Black Widow as a teenager, which may add context to Hawkeye’s decision.
Black Widow and S.H.I.E.L.D

Details about Black Widow’s time with S.H.I.E.L.D. have not been explored. In a scene in “The Avengers,” it is revealed that Hawkeye and Black Widow were known as “Strike Team: Delta.”
This S.H.I.E.L.D. tactical unit was sent on missions across the globe, and fans have always been interested in one particular assignment. During “The Avengers,” Black Widow said that the Chitauri invasion of New York was “just like Budapest all over again.” Hawkeye disagreed; “You and I remember Budapest very differently,” he replied. While it is a single line in the movie, fans have wondered what happened in Budapest, and why Black Widow remembered things differently.
Overall, “The Avengers” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” are a great look into Black Widow’s motives. Essentially, her motivations are set on redeeming herself. As Black Widow told Loki in “The Avengers,” “I’ve got red in my ledger, I’d like to wipe it out.”
“Avengers: Age of Ultron” explored Natasha’s self-hatred. For Natasha, there are two different versions of her past she faces. One hand, she remembers the past and blames herself for being unable to stand up to the Red Room’s brainwashing. She also seems regretful for allowing them to sterilize her during the graduation ceremony. However, there are times that Black Widow feels she is a victim in all of this. After all, she was just a child taken into the Red Room.
Overall, it is currently unclear whether or not Black Widow will be an origin story or an adventure set in the Aftermath of “Avengers: Endgame.” It could even conceivably be both, with Natasha’s past coming back to haunt her in the present. And yet, it is easy to understand why Marvel decided to create a solo “Black Widow” film. Her backstory is complex, different, and a little bit darker than most of the other heroes in the franchise. Meanwhile, it would be fascinating to see how the events of “Avengers: Endgame” would change Natasha’s character.

“It’s his last one committed to film,” director Joe Russo confirmed to Mashable at a press day in Los Angeles.
While the Russos did not confirm, exactly, Lee’s cameo appearance would be in the movie, they were happy to discuss their time with the pop culture legend.
Anthony Russo, recalls how pleasantly “weird” it was when Lee would come to set.
“We have all these movie stars on that set, and when Stan came to set, everybody would be like kids again,” he said. “It was always a lot of fun shooting these cameos because he was very charming, and he would maybe get the crew going, and everybody would be laughing and having a good time.”
While Lee’s passing is incredibly tragic and although any Marvel fan is sure to feel a little heartbroken seeing his face one last time, “Endgame” does seem to be the proper place for Lee’s final appearance.
“I have to say, I think it’s astonishing that this would be his last cameo,” remarked Joe. “It’s just kind of mind-boggling that he made it to the end of this run. I can’t believe it.”
Star Wars movies are going to take a “hiatus” for a couple of years
“Star Wars” is a trending topic lately, from official news that the movies will be streaming in the upcoming Disney+ streaming service to the multi-day “Star Wars” Celebration, which featured a teaser for December’s “Episode IX”, where we learned the movie was titled “The Rise of Skywalker.” There have also been significant revelations about Galaxy’s Edge, an upcoming theme park wing opening at both Disney World and Disneyland.
After the next film, we will not be receiving a new “Star Wars” movie for a while. The news was dropped by EW, via Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
“We’re going to take a hiatus for a couple of years,” Kennedy told the publication. “And we’re taking the time to look at where this is going from the standpoint of a saga.”
That said, that does not mean there won’t be any “Star Wars” content. Kennedy explained there would be more attention directed towards the Disney+ streaming platform. There are already shows including Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian” a series about a Rogue One rogue. Meanwhile, executives will be focusing on the next steps in the “Star Wars” franchise.
“We’re not just looking at what the next three movies might be, or talking about this in terms of a trilogy,” Kennedy added. “We’re looking at: What is the next decade of storytelling?”
Kennedy suggests that one possibility are films will flash backward. “I think this is a huge opportunity to step into the galaxy in a little bit different part of the timeline,” she said.
Kennedy did not mention whether the box office reports of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” affected other feature films, but she did re-commit to diversifying George Lucas’ universe even more than they already have since “The Force Awakens.”
“We have a series of filmmakers that we’re bringing into the fold, that we can start to look at as directing talent, and we’re trying to bring women into the mix as well,” Kennedy said. “We’re making it very inclusive with the group of people that we’re pulling together.”
Actor Jason Mitchell shares his philosophy to staying relevant and avoiding getting typecast in Hollywood.
Actor Jason Mitchell was an unknown actor before shocking and amazing audiences portraying N.W.A. rapper Eazy-E in “Straight Outta Compton,” and he has since appeared in a variety of successful movies and shows including “Keanu,” “Mudbound,” “Kong: Skull Island,” and “The Disaster Artist” and Showtime’s “The Chi.”
Project Casting posted casting calls for aspiring actors to audition for the leading roles in the N.W.A. movie. Casting calls were being held nationwide from Los Angeles all the way to Atlanta. After several nationwide casting calls, casting directors chose their modern-day version of N.W.A.
According to the NYPost, Jason Mitchell was a struggling New Orleans actor with no acting experience when he submitted an audition tape to play rapper Eazy-E in “Straight Outta Compton,” the biopic about the 1980s rap group N.W.A.
THE ACTOR STUDIED VIDEO FOOTAGE OF EAZY (NÉ ERIC WRIGHT) AND LISTENED TO HIS MUSIC UNTIL HE COULD MIMIC THE LATE RAPPER’S SPEECH AND MANNERISMS. DIRECTOR F. GARY GRAY LIKED WHAT HE SAW, AND ASKED MITCHELL TO LOS ANGELES FOR A CALLBACK AUDITION.
But, he nearly lost the role of a lifetime after he was unable to pay for a plane ticket to Los Angeles. He needed $1,500 to attend the callback. Luckily, the movie’s director settled for a Skype audition instead.
Jason Mitchell only started acting five years ago. “To be honest, acting was something where I got a chance to be somebody else and forget about the situation I was in,” he says. “I got caught up in the drug scene like a lot of my friends. We were making mistakes.”
Recently, Mitchell spoke to Collider to promote his new movie “The Mustang” and reflected on his image and career, especially on how he avoids getting typecast:
“I definitely feel like I have a lot more to show, but I definitely feel like I’m on the right track, too. I have 67 tattoos and I didn’t start acting ‘til I was 23 years old, so a part of me feels like I’m gonna get pigeonholed and typecast, and they’re always gonna keep me in that box because this is how I look, this is where I come from, and this is how I talk. So, after I did Compton, I was like, ‘You know what? I need to show everybody that I’m a 17-layer cake. I got faces on faces on faces, that you have not seen of me.’ And I feel like every role that I picked had to be different because I just knew, after I played Eazy-E, that they would call me for all the gangster roles. They called me to be Eazy-E, in every other movie. I was like, ‘Oh, man, I gotta make sure I don’t get crushed like this.’ Every person I play, I try to make them from a different world and have them be somebody different.”
