20th Century Fox’s “Artemis” Speaking Role Casting Call

20th Century Fox‘s “Artemis” is now casting speaking roles.

Lord Miller (“Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse,” “The Lego Franchise,” “21 & 22 Jump Street”), New Regency and Twentieth Century Fox are currently seeking the lead role for the feature film “Artemis”.

  • Jazz Bashara – Female, mid-twenties, Middle Eastern descent and raised Muslim. Jazz has lived on the moon since she was 6. She’s poor – but with an incredibly clever and scientific mind, she’s become the moon’s go-to smuggler which helps her secretly pay off her father’s debts. Having been let down too many times, she has hard time trusting people – but she covers up her insecurities with bravado.

About “Artemis”:

According to Deadline, Phil Lord & Christopher Miller have signed on to develop to direct Artemis, the book by The Martian author Andy Weir. Artemis is described as an adrenaline-charged crime caper that features smart, detailed world-building based on real science. It centers on Jasmine Bashara, aka Jazz, just another too-smart, directionless twentysomething chafing at the constraints of her small town and dreaming of a better life. Except the small town happens to be named Artemis — and it’s the first and only city on the moon. She’s got debts to pay, her job as a porter barely covers the rent, and her budding career as a smuggler isn’t exactly setting her up as a kingpin, much to her disappointment. So when the chance at a life-changing score drops in her lap, Jazz can’t say no, and she finds herself in the middle of a conspiracy for control of Artemis itself.

Netflix’s new feature film “Holidate” is now hiring an experienced set designer to work on the movie as it films in Georgia. The new movie will star Emma Roberts. According to Variety, “The story follows Sloane (Roberts) and Jackson, two perpetual singles who hate the holidays since their continual lack of a significant other subject them to the judgment of their family members or stuck with clingy, awkward dates. After they meet, however, they pledge to be each other’s plus-ones for each holiday celebration over the course of one year.”

Here’s How Much A-List Actors Are Getting Paid in 2019

Hollywood actors are making a lot more money now than ever before.

In a new report from “Variety“, the highest paid actors and actress in 2019 so far for a single movie were released, and coming on top is actor Ryan Reynolds with $27 million for his upcoming Netflix film, “Six Underground.” The Michael Bay-produced film is about a billionaire-financed vigilante squad and will be arriving at the streaming platform. Meanwhile, Reynolds’ will also be playing the voice of Pikachu in Detective Pikachu which releases on May 10.

In second place are Dwayne Johnson and Robert Downey Jr who both earned $20 million. Johnson made $20 million for “Fast & Furious” spin-off “Hobbs & Shaw” and Downey for “The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle.” In third is Will Smith who is getting paid $17 million to reprise his role of Mike Lowery in “Bad Boys for Life”, while Johnson’s “Hobbs & Shaw” co-star Jason Statham made $13 million.

Meanwhile, Emily Blunt tops the list for women with $12 to 13 million for “A Quiet Place” sequel, while Gal Gadot will be getting $10 million for “Wonder Woman 1984”.

Barack and Michelle Obama Share Details of Upcoming Netflix Projects

Netflix has shared details of their upcoming multi-project venture with Barack and Michelle Obama.

The Higher Ground Productions announced a total of seven projects that include several scripted shows, movies, and documentaries.

In a press release, Netflix in association with Higher Ground revealed that they had acquired the rights to two films including “American Factory,” a Sundance winner that looks into the relationship with China and America’s post-industrial war, and “Crip Cramp,” a feature-length documentary about a summer camp for disabled teenagers.

A drama called “Bloom,” which is a biopic based on David W. Blight’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book “Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom,” which is a scripted anthology series based on the New York Times obituary column Overlooked. Another production is a non-fiction series based on best-selling author Michael Lewis’ “The Fifth Risk: Undoing Democracy,” and the kids’ program “Listen to Your Vegetables & Eat Your Parents” have also been confirmed.

“Guardians of the Galaxy 3” To Start Filming Next Year

Earlier this year it was announced James Gunn would return and direct “Guardians of the Galaxy 3” now reports say the film will finally resume production and begin filming next year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Black Widow and The Eternals will begin shooting this year with Shang-Chi slated to follow.

“Guardians of the Galaxy 3” will start shooting next year in 2020. Gunn will start filming “The Suicide Squad” in Fall 2019, meaning Guardians may go into pre-production at the same time. That said, the movie may get pushed back so his schedule isn’t so demanding since DC Comics’ soft reboot is slated to release August 6, 2021. The five Guardians are expected to return for the movie, including Gamora. There are no reports on whether Thor will be included in the film, given the allusion that he will join the team and reform it as the “Asgardians of the Galaxy.”

This news comes after the production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3  was reportedly put on hold last September 2018. Marvel dismissed crew members for the sequel and producers stopped preproduction for “regrouping.”

The Hollywood Reporter reported the project was scheduled for preproduction fall 2018 but production stopped following the firing of director James Gunn, who had made controversial social media posts from 2008 to 2012.

Georgia-Filmed “Avengers: Endgame” Breaks Box Office Records

Georgia-filmed “Avengers: Endgame” brought in $1.2 billion worldwide at the box office, making it the biggest box office opening of all time.

In the United States, the Marvel movie raked in $350 million, breaking the previous record set by “Avengers: Infinity War” with $257 million. Meanwhile, in China, the movie $329 million at the box office, breaking the local box office record that had been set by “Monster Hunt 2”.

The feature film adds the total box office for the 22 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which started over a decade ago with “Iron Man” to a total with $19 billion. Marvel also made the number two spot at the box office with “Captain Marvel,” which made $8.1 million in its eighth weekend.

“Avengers: Endgame” was not only a hit at the box office but fans loved it. The movie currently has a 96% score rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Anthony and Joe Russo directed the fourth “Avengers” film and the final movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie stars Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Danai Gurira and Robert Downey, Jr.

Keanu Reeves reveals how turning down a movie role landed him in “movie jail” for over a decade

Keanu Reeves was an A-list actor in the 1990s thanks to his hit movie “Bill & Ted” movies and roles in Kathryn Bigelow’s “Point Break,” but it was Jan de Bont’s 1994 action thriller “Speed” that turned the actor into an international superstar. The film was a hit at the box office making $350 million worldwide on a $30 million production budget and won multiple Oscars. The film’s success made it an easy decision for 20th Century Fox to develop a sequel, although Reeves believed it would be difficult for a movie to be that successful a second time around.

Keanu Reeves on “Movie Jail”

In a new interview with GQ Magazine, Reeves said his decision to turn down “Speed 2: Cruise Control” led him to placed put into “movie jail” by 20th Century Fox. During that point in time, Reeves surprised many in the industry by following up the blockbuster hit movie with working at a regional theater playing the lead role in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”.

The choice to work on a smaller production booted him from being 20th Century Fox’s leading action star and Reeves said he remained in Fox movie jail for over a decade. “I didn’t work with [Fox] again until ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’ [in 2008],” Reeves said.

You would assume the hit movie “The Matrix” was enough to get him back on Fox’s good graces, but it was not. When the actor finally did return to the studio with Scott Derrickson-directed “Day The Earth Stood Still” remake, Reeves’ was no longer as popular as he once was as the movie made only $233 million worldwide, which was a major let down for the studio.  Reeves’ next movie, “47 Ronin,” was a box office flop in 2013 and is currently the last movie for the actor at the studio. Since then, Reeves has worked on indie productions including “The Neon Demon” and Lionsgate franchise “John Wick.”

“He’s got this beautiful, tragic conundrum—these two selves,” Reeves told GQ about the reason he keeps coming back to Wick. “The John who was married, and John Wick, the assassin. John wants to be free. But the only way he knows how is through John Wick. And John Wick keeps fucking killing people and breaking rules. We’re really watching a person fight for their life and their soul.”

“John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” hits theaters nationwide May 17th. Reeves told GQ he’ll keep making these films “as far as the audience wants to go.”

“Empire” Renewed for Season 6 with “No Plans” To Bring Jussie Smollet Back

Jussie Smollett is expected not to return to “Empire” as Fox renewed for a sixth season.

“Empire” is returning to Fox in the fall, but one of its most famous cast members will not be reprising their roles for the new season. In an announcement on Tuesday, Fox revealed the renewal for another season but the cast member who has been in the middle of controversy this year is not returning to the show.

A statement from Fox Entertainment and 21st Century FOX read, “By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for season six, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to ‘Empire.’”

Paired with the Season 6 renewal news, Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn saluted the show’s creative team without bringing up Smollett by name. “We want to thank everyone on the show – Taraji, Terrence, and the entire cast, as well as Lee, Danny, Brett, Sanaa, Brian, Francie, Dennis, and their teams – all of whom have done a tremendous job this season,” Thorn said.

Jussie Smollett Charges

This news comes after Smollett will not be tried on new charges from an alleged staged hate crime attack on January 29th. Following new evidence that surfaced contradicting Smollett’s initial claims that two strangers attacked him, the actor was eventually taken into custody by Chicago police officers on February 21st. Charges against Smollett were ultimately dropped in late March, well after the event had become a national political controversy.

Smollett’s attorneys maintained his innocence. “This entire situation is a reminder that there should never be an attempt to prove a case in the court of public opinion. That is wrong,” a statement read. Earlier this month, the city of Chicago filed a lawsuit against Smollett to recoup the $130,000 spent on the initial investigation into Smollett’s assertions.

Meanwhile, on the hit “Empire” series, last week’s episode saw the marriage of Smollett’s character Jamal to his boyfriend Kai, who is played by Toby Onwemere, a ceremony that let Kai telling those gathered he is HIV positive. Season 5 of “Empire” will come to an end on Wednesday night with the season finale called “The Roughest Day.”

‘Avengers: Endgame’s Ending is Great News for Aspiring Actors

Following the ending of “Avengers: Endgame,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe is expected to be a lot more diverse.

Marvel Studios plans to introduce several new superheroes in an expanding array of genders, ethnicities, ages, and sexual orientations.

Victoria Alonso, the studio’s executive vice-president of production, told Vulture, that the history of white male superheroes like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Spider-Man is not reflective of an inclusive culture, and it is a sound business model to include more diversity.

“The lesson with Captain Marvel and Black Panther, where the combined efforts of those two movies are $2.4 billion, is if you don’t do it, you’re leaving money on the table,” said Alonso. “This is show business — there’s a business part to the show. Don’t leave money on the table. Just commit to it.”

Beyond additional capital, Alonso said an increasingly diverse group of heroes, villains, and supporting actors are a top priority for the studio’s future films. “We’re just determined to have it be how we do it,” she says. “And if we do it, maybe somebody else will do it … I encourage every studio, every indie production company, every filmmaker out there to make an effort.”

Marvel has already started working on more diverse and inclusive projects including, Scarlett Johansson’s “Black Widow” and “Shang-Chi” an Asian martial-arts master.

Sarah Halley Finn, casting director who has cast every Marvel film, with 2008’s “Iron Man”, expects a large number of new faces in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: “You’re gonna see even more new faces — and faces from all different background, all ages, all ethnicities, LGBTQ, differently abled people,” she says.

Marvel has been working with the Casting Society of America, which has been holding open calls for underrepresented actors, including transgender, those with disabilities and Middle Eastern, North African, South American actors.

“It’s a priority to have authenticity, to increase representation, to give greater representation to actors who have not traditionally been represented in mainstream movies on the big screen,” says Finn.

Disney’s “Star Wars: Galaxy Edge” Open Casting Call

Disney is now hiring actors for their new, highly anticipated land “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge”, which is set to open this summer at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

According to the casting call breakdown, Disney is looking for actors at “Savi’s Workshop” located in the “Black Spire Outpost,” an apparel shop which Disney says provides “functional clothing suitable for a variety of occasions and worlds.” 

The group of “Gatherers” operate within the workshop, which is packed with ancient relics they’ve collected throughout the galaxy, and they are experts in helping people design and build lightsabers, Disney describes in its job description. “In this exclusive experience, guests will feel like a Jedi as they build these elegant weapons from a more civilized age,” Disney says.

The “Gatherers” are slightly quirky and mysterious, Disney says, and personable and humorous, so actors should have “good comedic and improvisational instincts.” 

The casting call is at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Rehearsal Facility on Tuesday, May 21, at 4 p.m. 

Disney asks that actors be prepared with a script posted in the job description.
