Fox’s latest series “The Passage,” based on Justin Cronin’s novels, is not returning for a second season on the network after filming in Georgia.
The series stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar, from Liz Heldens, Matt Reeves, and Scott Free. According to Deadline, the show started off promising with over 5 million viewers. But the series saw a decline in ratings, ending the season with 3.122 million viewers in its two hours March 11 season finale.
The series was written by Heldens and centers around a secret government medical facility experimenting with a virus that could cure all diseases or destroy humanity. The series focused on a 10-year-old girl named Amy Bellafonte (Saniyya Sidney), who was chosen to be a test subject for this experiment and Brad Wolgast (Gosselaar), the federal agent who attempted to protect her.
It is important to note that last April Fox canceled the Georgia-filmed series “The Gifted” after two seasons. The family adventure series was set in the X-Men universe and comes from 20th Century Fox TV, which is now part of Disney. Critic liked the show but low ratings in the second season were not enough to keep the show on the network.
In related news, Fox also canceled “The Cool Kids.” Together, this would be FOX’s fourth cancellation of the season so far, following the cancellations of “The Gifted” and “Rel” last month. That said, Fox has handed out renewals for seven scripted series including “9-1-1,” “The Resident,” “Empire,” “Family Guy,” “The Simpsons,” “Bob’s Burgers,” and “Last Man Standing.” Only “Proven Innocent,” “Lethal Weapon,” “The Orville,” and “Star,” which also filmed in Georgia, are still waiting to hear their ultimate fates, but the network’s remaining decisions should be made sometime in the next few days.

Rapper T.I’s ex-wife and Xscape singer Tiny is looking for background singers.
After officially announcing her solo singing career, Xscape’s Tiny Harris is looking for aspiring and talented singers to join her on stage as background singers.
According to reports, auditions will take place Thursday May 9 between 7:30pm – 9:30pm at Soul Asylum Studios, which is located at 1676 Defoors Circle NW, Atlanta, GA 30318.
About Tiny Harris:
This will be Tiny’s first solo project as a singer/songwriter. Over the course of her 25-year singing career, the Grammy award-winning singer is best known for singing in the group “Xscape” and writing hit songs such as TLC’s “No Scrubs”.
During a recent listening event, Tiny said she is finishing her studio album.“Sometimes its harder to branch out from what they [the fans] know … I thought, maybe if I create something different with this new music, maybe they’ll get into it,” Harris said.
Mark Duplass, whose production company has a four-picture film deal with Netflix, made a statement on Twitter saying, “Don’t give your business to Georgia,” he wrote. “Will you pledge with me not to film anything in Georgia until they reverse this backwards legislation?”
This is not the first time Mark Duplass vocalized his thoughts about the film industry. Earlier this year, Duplass said he was “apalled” that background actors are treated like second class citizens.
“Continually appalled at how background actors are treated as 2nd class citizens. If you see this happening, please gently bring it to the attention of the offender(s) and ask them to reconsider their approach. It’s an odd blind spot in our industry,” Duplass.
Alyssa Milano renews call to boycott Georgia
To add insult to injury, actress Alyssa Milano renewed her call to boycott Georgia over the anti-abortion legislation. “I will do everything in my power to get as many productions as possible — including ‘Insatiable’ — to move out of this state which continues to put forth oppressive, hurtful policy that contradicts everything the entertainment industry stands for,” Milano said in a statement.
“Should people wait to boycott? No. Should we keep funding states that put forth hurtful policy? No,” Milano said. However, it is worth pointing out like she did, she is “contractually obligated” to continue filming “Insatiable” in Georgia for another month.
“If you are offered a project that shoots in Georgia or are a producer considering working in Georgia or any state with a heartbeat bill, you should not take that job and you should be vocal about why you’re not taking that job.”
Milano has been outspoken since March when the bill was approved by the Georgia General Assembly. She called for a boycott and delivered a letter signed by Hollywood A-listers including Amy Schumer, Patton Oswalt, Sarah Silverman, Uzo Aduba and Colin Hanks, to Gov. Brian Kemp’s office.
“I have had discussions with many actors, producers and directors. All of them have agreed they will not work in Georgia,” she added in her statement to TheWrap, though she did not identify any by name. “The entertainment industry supplements $10 billion a year and employs 90,000 Georgians. Those who signed on to my letter to Kemp believe we can not continue to feed the economy of a state which hurts women, communities of color, and the LGBTQ community.”
Milano added: “Obviously, those who are already contractually obligated to be there, should fight to get their show out of Georgia while continuing their contractual obligation. I have to be there for another three weeks but you can be sure I will fight tooth and nail to move ‘Insatiable’ to a state that will protect our rights. And if it doesn’t move to another state, I will not be able to return to the show if we are blessed with a third season. This is my leverage. I will use it for the betterment of society and our great country.”
Georgia’s heartbeat bill impact on the film industry:
Georgia’s Republican Governor Brian Kemp signed legislation called the “heartbeat bill,” which bans abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected. It provides some exceptions, such as to save the life of the mother or for rape and incest, but only if the woman files a police report. Consequently, many film industry influencers are calling on Hollywood to stop filming in the state.
Georgia overtook California as the top location for the production of movies in 2016, leading to an economic impact of $9.5 billion in fiscal 2017 and $2.7 billion in direct spending. That being said, since 2017 the number of productions filming in the state have declined and according to a study from FilmL.A., Canada overtook Georgia as the number 1 filming location in the world.

Two production companies say they will not film in Georgia over the “heartbeat” bill.
In the last few years, Georgia has faced several threats of boycotts over controversial legislation, now the future of the state’s film industry may be in jeopardy.
Earlier this week, Georgia’s Republican Governor Brian Kemp signed legislation called the “heartbeat bill,” which bans abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected. It provides some exceptions, such as to save the life of the mother or for rape and incest, but only if the woman files a police report. Consequently, many film industry influencers are calling on Hollywood to stop filming in the state.
Last March, Hollywood actors, and producers including Alyssa Milano, June Diane Raphael, and George Takei threatened to boycott the state when the Georgia General Assembly passed the bill with a 92 to 78 vote.
Now, Killer Films, the production company behind such hit movies as “Vox Lux,” “First Reformed” and “Carol” say they will no longer film in the state. CEO Christine Vachon tweeted on Thursday morning that the company will “no longer consider Georgia as a viable shooting location until this ridiculous law is overturned.”
Meanwhile, the creator behind “The Wire” and “The Deuce,” David Simon who runs Blown Deadline productions, also tweeted about the law. “I can’t ask any female member of any film production with which I am involved to so marginalize themselves or compromise their inalienable authority over their own bodies. I must undertake production where the rights of all citizens remain intact,” he said, further explaining in another tweet: “Can only speak for my production company. Our comparative assessments of locations for upcoming development will pull Georgia off the list until we can be assured the health options and civil liberties of our female colleagues are unimpaired.”
These are two production companies out of dozens in Hollywood. However, the MPAA, which represents the five major film studios, says it is observing the law and waiting on the final court outcomes. “Film and television production in Georgia supports more than 92,000 jobs and brings significant economic benefits to communities and families,” says the MPAA’s Senior Vice President of communications Chris Ortman. “It is important to remember that similar legislation has been attempted in other states, and has either been enjoined by the courts or is currently being challenged. The outcome in Georgia will also be determined through the legal process. We will continue to monitor developments.”
The law is set to go into effect on January 2020 but, there will undoubtedly be arguments taking place in court before the law goes into effect. A similar piece of legislation was passed in 2016 by North Dakota, and the U.S. Supreme Court overturned it. However, the difference this time around is the recent appointment of conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh with the odds being in favor of keeping the “heartbeat” bill.
When money and politics collide, it may not be a pretty picture. Georgia gives tax incentives of up to 30 percent back, which explains why over 400 productions filmed in Georgia last year, resulting in an estimated $2.7 billion in direct spending the state. Major TV shows and movies film in the state including AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” Netflix’s “Ozark” and “Stranger Things. Also, Marvel’s biggest blockbusters including “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Endgame.”

Joe Biden stars in the first Hollywood fundraising event of his 2020 campaign.
According to Variety, Joe Biden spoke to hundreds on Wednesday evening at the home of James Costos and Michael Smith in his first fundraising tour through Los Angeles since he announced his 2020 presidential campaign.
The entertainment news outlet says Hollywood’s elite political class including Jeffrey Katzenberg, Tom Rothman, Rob Reiner, and Chris Silbermann were among the long list of co-hosts for the event. Among those at the event, which was priced at $2,800 per person, including Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, Aubrey Plaza, Tom Ford, Michelle Kwan, and Jason Collins.
Biden spoke from a stage and talked about being a consensus builder with some in attendance shouting “Go Joe!” as he spoke.
“I promise you if we elect a Democrat this time — I predict to you whether it is me or someone else — but I guarantee you if it’s me, what’s gonna happen is, we’re going to see this country come together like it hasn’t in a long time,” Biden said, according to a pool report, to a crowd that gathered on the home’s front lawn under heat lamps. “Because people are tired, they’re sick and tired of what’s happening. Let’s lift our heads up. Again, not a joke, remember who the hell we are.”
He said that about a half dozen of the attendees had called him over the past two years to urge him to run, evening saying, “You don’t have a choice — run. This is not about you.” “I said, ‘Thank you very much,’” as the crowd laughed.
As Variety points out, the number of co-hosts who organized for Biden’s first Hollywood campaign also organized the Obama-Biden 2008 and 2012 presidential campaign. Those present include Those present also included producer Eric Ortner, Tennis Channel President Ken Solomon; Colleen Bell, former U.S. Ambassador to Hungary, and her husband, producer Bradley Bell; Noah Mamet, former U.S. Ambassador to Argentina; Sony-Screen Gems senior vice president Eric Paquette; entrepreneur Jon Vein; and Michael and Mattie Lawson. As one attendee told Variety, “It is the band getting back together.”
It is important to note there are many candidates early in the race, the attendees said that Biden “closed a lot of deals” convincing donors he is best suited to take on President Trump.
Biden was critical of Wall Street philosophy saying, “Since when are they the only job creators? Since when has that happened? Since when has it become the fact that there’s no obligation to employees?” He added, “Stockholders aren’t the only job creators.”
Biden talked about the freedom of the press promising, “every single fundraiser I do” will allow for reporters to attend as he explains, “I don’t want to hear anybody say we are doing things in secret.”
Biden also gave a warning of what will happen to America if Trump is reelected.
“Four years of this president will be an aberration in a moment in history; eight years will fundamentally change who we are beginning particularly in foreign policy,” he said.
