Coronavirus: Hollywood is Working on How to Resume Filming Safely

The Directors Guild of America launches a committee to study how to resume filming safely.

Variety reports the Directors Guild of America picked “Contagion” director Steven Soderbergh to lead a committee to investigate how to start production when the Coronavirus pandemic subsides.

DGA President Thomas Schlamme and National Executive Director Russell Hollander made the announcement late Thursday afternoon.

“A major concern we’re hearing most right now is about when we’ll be returning to work, and how we can be certain that it’s safe to do so,” the duo said. “Rest assured, this is something we’ve been spending a great deal of time thinking about as well. While we don’t have an answer as to when production will resume, we are taking steps to address how we can be safe when it does happen. A national board committee, spearheaded by Steven Soderbergh and with members from all categories, has been appointed to do a thorough examination of the issues at hand and to make recommendations to the board.”

The DGA is reportedly consulting with leading epidemiologists in the science and will work with other Hollywood unions and employers for a guide to help everyone safely return to work.

“And speaking of when we all go back to work, a second national board committee has been appointed to focus on preserving the communal theatrical experience so that when it is safe to do so, your feature films intended to be seen on a big screen will have that opportunity,” they said. “The committee, comprised of feature film directors, assistant directors, and unit production managers will begin working now to examine ways to promote that safe return to a theatrical exhibition that’s so important for our culture and our art.”

The actor explained his attitude toward being recognized and being admired by others in a video he shared on Thursday via IGTV. The clip was a response to a question by a fan, one of many he’s been answering on the platform during the Coronavirus pandemic.

He says that now, he tries not to get caught up with the idea of being famous. He said as a wrestler, he encountered excited fans everywhere, and it created a wrong perception of reality for him. The Rock was not as famous as he is now, but he felt like he was famous.

“I mean, I don’t know, I’m like the Beatles,” he said with a laugh. “Guys, listen, Beatles, Elvis, Jesus, and I’m this famous now.”

The Rock’s perception of fame changed after meeting two fans one night at a restaurant.

“I’m so grateful that it happened. I thank this couple, by the way,” he said. “They probably have no idea that they were part of a defining moment in my life. So they came over, and they were so nice, they said, ‘We’re so sorry, can we please have your autograph and a picture? So sorry.’ … I said ‘yes,’ but in a way that made them feel bad.”

“And in that moment, their demeanor changed, their energy changed. They went from excited and sorry but really excited to then they felt bad. I have goosebumps now thinking about it,” he recalled.

They left embarrassed, but he insisted on giving them an autograph. The fans continued to apologize and left.

“It took all of 30 seconds, not even 30 seconds, to realize that I had an opportunity to make somebody feel good and I made them feel bad… and what an a**hole that made me,” he said.

After that, he promised he would never make someone feel bad for asking for a photo or an autograph.

“[Fans] all get the same treatment, and that treatment is gratitude, and I appreciate you coming up and actually asking for my autograph,” he said, “because by the way, the alternative to that is I go back to having seven bucks in my pocket and nobody giving a s*** to get my autograph or get my picture. On top of that, here’s the truth: You know, taking a picture, a selfie or signing an autograph, is literally one of the easiest parts of my job.”

He gave some advice for aspiring actors. “Don’t worry about being famous. Worry about being good at something.”

And am I sick of taking selfies??? Fame is a very funny and dangerous thing. It can be highly deceiving, cold blooded and set you down a dark path that ends in self destruction if you let yourself buy into your own fame. I started to become as asshole about my fame when I was a famous pro wrestler in my 20’s, (and I wore a fanny pack ???‍♂️) until one fateful night changed my perspective and self awareness and GRATITUDE for the rest of my life. My advice to teenagers, young adults or anyone who wants to be famous/ Don’t worry about being famous. Instead work hard to become good at something. Then work harder to become great. Then work even harder and put in the 10, 15, 20+ years to become MASTERFUL. Fame will come. Or maybe it won’t. Either way, fame is fleeting but your legacy is forever. Mahalo for the great questions ? and keep ‘em coming. Most importantly, stay healthy my friends. D

“E.T.” Cinematographer Dies From Coronavirus

Cinematographer Allen Daviau, died Wednesday in Los Angeles, California.

Daviau is a five-time Academy Award nominee for several hit films including Steven Spielberg’s “E.T. the Extra Terrestrial” and “Empire of the Sun”.

According to Variety, Daviau had died of Coronavirus at the MPTF hospital. “RIP Allen Daviau, my friend of almost 60 years, cinematographer and bon vivant, five-time Academy Award nominee, dining companion extraordinaire, pure soul, who left us last night at the MPTF Hospital, his longtime home, after contracting COVID-19. Salut, mon ami.”

A New Orleans native, Daviau was nominated for cinematography Oscars for several Spielberg movies including “The Color Purple,”  “Empire of the Sun,” and “E.T. the Extraterrestrial”

Spielberg issued a statement saying, “In 1968, Allen and I started our careers side by side with the short film Amblin. Allen was a wonderful artist but his warmth and humanity were as powerful as his lens. He was a singular talent and a beautiful human being.”

Daviau started out by shooting music videos. In 1983, he spoke with  American Cinematographer magazine about preparing for the “E.T.” shoot, “We sat down with Steven and started screening movies together. This is the best way I know to get started, watching our own movies and other people’s movies, discussing them, evolving the style we want. We watched Night of the Hunter, Alien, Apocalypse Now, Last Tango in Paris — I forget what all.”

He added his favorite scene to shoot in the movie. He said,  “It would be the one in which the youngster [Henry Thomas] says, ‘I’m keeping him.’ The little girl [Drew Barrymore] walks forward, there are highlights in E.T.’s eyes, no detail in the face, and the light is yellow, the effect is very much that of a Maxfield Parrish painting.”

Kees van Oostrum, president of the American Society of Cinematographers, also confirmed Daviau’s passing in a statement:

“It is with great regret and sadness that I have to announce the passing last night of my friend and a great member of the society, Mr. Allen Daviau, ASC. Allen started his career shooting the early movies of Stephen Spielberg, including Amblin (1968), and went on to an impressive career as a cinematographer with movies that have deeply inspired us all. He was honored with 5 Academy Award nominations, was bestowed our Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007 and won our Outstanding  ASC Achievement in Cinematography for Bugsy (1991) and Empire of the Sun (1987). He amassed an impressive body of work: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), The Color Purple (1985), and Avalon (1990), just to mention a few.”

“Allen was active in our society in many ways like chairing our membership committee for several years,” van Oostrum said. “Also, his commitment to teaching our craft and being very accessible for young cinematographers will forever be engraved in our memories. He will be remembered fondly for his sense of humor, his taste for the best of foods and his laugh that unmistakably marked his presence from far away.

“Allen was 77 years old and I am proud that we were able to host him during our 100-year celebration last year. He told me then that it was for him “one of the best of gifts life had to offer.” His smile that evening was affectionate and many of us were able to pay him respect. You will be missed so much, dear Allen,” van Oostrum concluded.
