Coronavirus: Hawaii’s Film Industry is Officially Open

Hawaii’s film industry is set to resume on June 5th.

Mayor Kirk Caldwell released a statement saying Oahu’s film and TV industry will reopen for film production and on-location filming starting June 5th.

Gov. David Ige approved the request in Honolulu’s Amended Emergency Order 2020-15. “Honolulu has been the premier tropical location for filming since the early 1900s, and we have missed their presence around the island, and strong contribution to a diversified economy,” said Mayor Caldwell.

He added guidelines that were created by the Honolulu Film Office, who had the help of film industry members and representatives included other neighboring island county film offices.

“I want to thank the many industry members and representatives, including the State and Neighbor Island County film offices, who helped the Honolulu Film Office put together such comprehensive guidelines. In addition to production requirements in general, it includes a modified quarantine process for out of state productions which have historically put Hawai‘i on the map as a safe yet exotic film location. The guidelines are the key to reopening this important part of our local economy and creative community.”

These guidelines include reopening productions include safety procedures, physical distancing, symptoms awareness, protective measures, and considerations for security, catering, and other departments. Productions will still be required to get film permits and requiring productions to register any coronavirus outbreaks with the Honolulu Film Office in the event of contact tracking.

There will be a 14-day quarantine for all individuals coming from out of the state to film in Oahu. “The process includes testing of travelers prior to boarding a flight to Honolulu, testing several days after arrival, and creating a ‘quarantine bubble’ of limited travel on island only between the hotel/residence and reporting to a place of work. If no testing is completed, the 14-day quarantine applies,” KHON2 report reads.

In relevant news, the Chicago Film Office announced this week they would start issuing film permits.

City officials announced Chicago’s health metrics are on track for a transition from Phase 2 (Stay at Home) to Phase 3 (Cautiously Reopen) in early June. As a result, some of the city’s services will increase operations.  As a result, the Chicago Film Office will start issuing film permits starting June 15, 2020, for productions with crews with ten or fewer people. “We are working with the Illinois Film Office to develop these guidelines further for when larger film production can resume safely. At this time, some support services from the City of Chicago may be limited.”

Atlanta Coronavirus: Two Projects Are Pushed Back Until “Mid-September”

Two projects scheduled to film in June are pushed back until mid-September due to the Coronavirus.

Tammy Smith Casting is the casting director behind many hit feature films including ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ and Netflix’s upcoming Dwayne Johnson feature film ‘Red Notice’. She announced on Facebook on Thursday, several projects, which were scheduled to start filming this June, is pushed back until September.

I wanted to let you all know that one of the 2 projects I was scheduled to start this month, is looking to get slowly up and running (prepping starting in July) and hoping to shoot starting in mid-September,” Tammy Smith Casting says. “ know many of you need the work and we are not sure how this will work with the logistics of all the precautions with Covid-19, but I just thought I would share the info so that you know things are starting to stir a bit.

She added, “Thank you and I hope everyone is staying strong and healthy.”

This news comes after a report suggesting Georgia’s film industry will recover faster allowing for additional movies and TV shows to film in the state.

Thomas reportedly discussed how California and New York are seriously impacted by the Coronavirus, which gives Georgia an opportunity to beat their competitors. “There were projects that had stages they had holds on starting in late summer, but the projects in those stages beforehand haven’t finished their work yet. It’s going to be interesting how these sound stages can accommodate all the projects coming in, not only the projects coming back but also the new ones scheduled.

“We’ll also get even more projects coming from other states because Georgia is reopening faster than other states. … We also have all these new streaming services’ projects.”

On May 28, Gov. Brian Kemp signed an executive order allowing for public gathers of 25 people or more starting June 1, as long as social distancing remains in place. Productions could resume as early as June or in July.

On June 1st, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers released a highly anticipated white paper on safety protocols for filmmaking.

“We’re talking to production companies and studios all the time. … (The white paper) will set the tone for how things will go in the next couple, three months,” Thomas said. “We are in a good place in Georgia in that we’re opening sooner than New York and L.A. We’re seeing some projects that were going to New York or L.A. that are actually coming here. We do think things will get going here. We have projects that will be coming here in mid-June with pre-production that would start shooting in July.”

It is important to note, last April, many Hollywood studios were hesitant to resume filming in Georgia despite the state’s reopening process.

According to Deadline, even if Georgia relaxed restrictions to include more film and TV production, studios are not planning on taking advantage of filming in Georgia any time soon. Not until testing across the nation improves dramatically, and industry guidelines are built to present a safe environment for their cast and crew.

Arguably, one of the biggest shows includes Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’ was filming in Georgia when production was shut down indefinitely due to the Coronavirus pandemic.  At this time, production has suspended until further notice.

Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos explained, despite the state’s decisions to ease restrictions, productions cannot begin until rigorous testing.

“We have to be able to look our employees and cast and crew in the eyes and say, ‘This is a safe place to work,’” he said.

Coronavirus: Chicago Film Office To Resume Issuing Film Permits

The Chicago Film Office announced this week they would start issuing film permits.

At this time, some support services from the City of Chicago may be limited.”

“We are working to create specific guidance so that we can provide more details as to what services we will be able to provide either online or in-person in Phase 3,” the Chicago film office website says. “This will include details such as how to engage in healthy interactions between workers and residents, how to maintain safe working spaces and conditions, and how to design and monitor workplace operations to create flexibility and further safety for employees and residents.”

In relevant news, Georgia Film Officials report more TV shows and movies could film in the Peach State as the state is reportedly recovering faster than others.

Lee Thomas is the deputy Commissioner of the Georgia Film, Music and Digital Entertainment Office, a division of the Georgia Department of Economic Development. She says more TV shows and film projects could come to Georgia as the Peach State recovers from the Coronavirus faster than other states.

Thomas provided an update on Georgia’s film industry on June 2 at a virtual luncheon near the Sandy Springs Perimeter Chamber.

Thomas reportedly discussed how California and New York are severely impacted by the Coronavirus, which allows Georgia to beat their competitors. “There were projects that had stages they had holds on starting in late summer, but the projects in those stages beforehand haven’t finished their work yet. Coronavirus: More TV Shows and Movies Could Reportedly Film in Georgia

Georgia’s film industry could return and be bigger and better than ever before after the Coronavirus.

Lee Thomas, Deputy Commissioner of the Georgia Film, Music and Digital Entertainment Office, a division of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, says more TV shows and film projects could come to Georgia as the Peach State recovers from the Coronavirus faster than other states.

Thomas provided an update on Georgia’s film industry on June 2nd at a virtual luncheon near the Sandy Springs Perimeter Chamber.

When the COVID-19 outbreak hit Georgia, 20 productions voluntarily shut down.

“’MacGyver’ (was) on their 11th episode and will tack on the 12th one when things pick up. Some projects hadn’t started yet. Others, like Netflix’s new movie (‘Red Notice’) with Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds, were in the middle of shooting,” Thomas said, adding all of those productions will return to Georgia once they believe it is safe to resume filming.

Once the pandemic began, the office created COVID-19 resources to help those affected by the disease. Thomas said she does not know how much money companies have lost since the pandemic but expects to have figures within the next two months.

Recently, Georgia’s film tax credit reportedly came up for discussion during a legislative hearing on making budget cuts once the 2020 Georgia General Assembly resumes their session next month.

Pat Wilson, the commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, told members of a state Senate Appropriations subcommittee that Georgia’s growing film industry generated approximately $8.5 billion in economic impact, including $2.9 billion in direct spending. Nearly 90,000 Georgians were employed in film and TV productions before the coronavirus pandemic shut down the industry, Wilson added.

However, the Georgia tax credit also costs taxpayers about $400 million per year. As Gov. Brian Kemp and other legislative leaders looking to reduce spending even before the Coronavirus Pandemic, the cost of the tax credit caused two audits of the film industry last January. Those audits helped spark the introduction of legislation to implement stricter rules on the transfer or sale of unused credits, which is used by production groups that film part of the movie outside of Georgia.

This news comes after ‘Spider-Man 3’ is expected to film in Atlanta, Georgia. Tom Holland is eager to reprise his role as the world’s most famous Spider-man. In a new interview with The Inquirer, the 23-year-old actor strengthens his enthusiasm for Spider-Man 3, plus a few notable details about the film.

According to Tom Holland, Spider-Man 3‘s plot is “absolutely insane,” and he’ll be returning to set as Peter Parker and his new Lycra Spider-Man suit this summer. “We will be shooting “Spider-Man 3” in July in Atlanta,” he said.

He added, “Zendaya will most definitely be in the film,” to play Mary-Jane Watson, Peter Parker’s love interest. However, “as to the relationship between Peter and MJ, I’m not too sure what it will be.” The Inquirer also discovered that director Jon Watts will also bring back Jacob Batalon as Parker’s best friend, Ned.

Dwayne Johnson Delivers Passionate Black Lives Matter Speech: “I got you…because Black lives matter”

Dwayne Johnson shared a passionate speech on social media, supporting the Black Lives Matter movement.

Dwayne Johnson also potentially disputed the White House’s lack of leadership during nationwide protests of George Floyd’s death.

“Where are you? Where is our leader?” Johnson says. “Where is our leader at this time when our country is down on its knees, begging, pleading, hurt, angry, frustrated, in pain with its arms out, just wanting to be heard?”

The video lasts eight minutes and 25 seconds. George Floyd was killed by police after a police officer, Derek Chauvin, forced his knee on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes. Chauvin was fired and charged with second-degree murder. The three other officers, Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng, and Tou Thao — were fired and charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder.

“Where is our compassionate leader who’s going to step up to our country who’s down on its knees, and extend a hand and say, ‘You stand up, stand up with me because I got you. I hear you, I’m listening to you. And you have my word that I’m going to do everything in my power, until my dying day, my last breath, to do everything I can to create the change that is needed, to normalize equality because Black lives matter.’ Where are you?” Johnson says.

Dwayne Johnson also calls out the “All Lives Matter” movement, saying Black Lives need help.

“Of course, all lives matter, but in this moment right now, this defining, pivotal, explosive moment where our country is down on its knees…we must say the words: Black lives matter,” he says.

“We must become the leaders we are looking for. I’ll ask it one more time: Where are you? Where is that compassionate leader who steps up and takes accountability for his country and all the people in our country?” Johnson says. “Where are you? I’ll tell you what, we’re here. We’re all here. The process to change has already begun. You can feel it across our country. Change is happening. It’s going to take time. We’re going to get beat up. We’re going to take our lumps. There’s going to be blood, but the process of change has already begun.”

This news comes after several Black actors across Hollywood have spoken out in support of Black Lives Matter and against racism.

John Boyega gave an incredible Black Lives Matter speech on Wednesday.

Boyega attended a protest in London’s Hyde Park, where he delivered an emotional speech putting the movement over his acting career.

“Black lives have always mattered,” Boyega said. “We have always been important. We have always meant something. We have always succeeded regardless. And now is the time. I ain’t waiting.”

“Every black person understands and realizes the first time you are reminded that you are black,” Boyega added, occasionally stopping to fight back tears during the speech. “You remember. Every black person in here remembers when another person reminded you that you were black.”

“Look, I don’t know if I’m going to have a career after this, but f*** that,” referencing his acting career and relationships in Hollywood.

‘Riverdale’ actress Vanessa Morgan criticizes Hollywood’s depiction of Black people.

After the protests of George Floyd’s death, ‘Riverdale’ star Vanessa Morgan is using this time to teach her followers about Hollywood’s systemic racism and the lack of meaningful roles that actors of colors are offered.

In a social media post on May 31, Morgan called out the TV industry. “Tired of how black people are portrayed in media, tired of us being portrayed as thugs, dangerous or angry scary people,” she wrote in the note. “Tired of us also being used as sidekick nondimensional characters to our white leads. Or only used in the ads for diversity but not actually in the show.”

Coronavirus: AMC Theaters Loses $2.2 Billion

AMC theaters lose $2.2 billion due to the Coronavirus COVID-19.

AMC Theaters, the American largest cinema group, reports losing $2.2 billion as a result of the global lockdown caused by the pandemic. In a statement, the company plans to fully reopen in July in an attempt to fix the current situation. The company acknowledged they it could potentially face bankruptcy, saying there is “substantial doubt exists” about the company’s future.

The CEO Adam Aron said in a statement “we are confident we are taking the necessary steps on a broad array of fronts to ensure AMC’s future success as we navigate these turbulent and uncertain times… in the end, AMC will both succeed and prosper.”

Global cinemas were hit hard by the Coronavirus COVID-19 crisis, which forced theaters around the world to  close. Movie theaters in countries including Hong Kong, which have already started reopening. But, many theaters are forced to open at a lower capacity for guests to meet social distancing guidelines.

The rise in popularity of streaming services has impacted the cinema industry. AMC launched its own service, called AMC Theaters on Demand, in 2019.

(Original Posting: June 11, 2018) AMC Theaters warned the company may not survive the Coronavirus pandemic.

COVID-19 has closed AMC theaters across the country and left film studios looking for ways to distribute their content directly to viewers over streaming platforms.

AMC, the largest U.S. chain said they do not have enough money to reopen its theaters this summer. Even if the company was allowed to open, it would need more money. AMC noted that people could be afraid to return to theaters, but hopes people would enjoy going to the movies after months of social distancing.

“Due to these factors, substantial doubt exists about our ability to continue as a going concern for a reasonable period of time,” AMC wrote in a regulatory filing.

Meanwhile, Cinemark plans to reopen theaters on June 19th. The company said on Wednesday they believe they have enough cash to last the rest of the year, even if theaters remain closed. The company’s CEO said he does not expect the industry to return to normal until 2022. Cinemark said they are taking steps to bring moviegoers back including disinfecting mornings and before each showtime.

The company also said they would stay in debt if local governments require movie theaters to operate at 50% occupancy.

A major concern for theatre chains is movie studios could release their content to streaming services they already own. Since the pandemic, entertainment companies have delayed most of their movie release dates.

This news comes after a study by MoffettNathanson which stated revenues from ticket sales will be cut in half in comparison to 2019. The analysts see numbers dropping from $11.4 billion in 2019 to $5.5 billion in 2020. That’s a 52% plunge, and it’s a drop that could be even steeper if cinemas don’t reopen in July.

“Given the uncertainty around the key questions we mention above, including sticking to July release dates, when key markets reopen and willingness of movie-goers to return before a vaccine, our estimates today are very much a work in process with lots of volatility in the months ahead,” the note’s authors report.

TV Cops Donate to Support Black Lives Matter Movement

0

Following the death of George Floyd and protests across America, TV cops are donating to show their support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

TV actors who have played cops or detectives on shows are urging others to make donations of their residuals and salaries to the Emergency Response Fund. Such actors include “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” actress Stephanie Beatriz and “Blue Bloods” actor Griffin Newman.

“If you currently play a cop? If you make tens of hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in residuals from playing a cop?” Beatriz and Newman each donated over $10,000 to support various organizations.

This went viral and spread to other actors including “Law & Order: SVU” writer Celine Robinson gave $5,500. “Castle Rock” writer Lilay Byock and “Medical Police” creator Max Silvestri also donated, saying while they do not play cops on television, they have written shows associated with law enforcement.

According to a January report by Color of Change, crime shows miseducate the public about the criminal justice system by creating poor representations of crime, race and gender. The report says, “These fictitious depictions build on false perceptions of the criminal justice system and how it intersects with race and gender while ignoring many important realities.”

In relevant news, actress Lea Michele is responding to the accusation she made a Black ‘Glee’ co-star, Samantha Ware, life a “living hell” in 2015.

On Wednesday morning, Michele shared a statement on Instagram responding to actress Samantha Ware’s claim. She did not respond to Ware directly, nor did she address the fact she lost her HelloFresh deal over Ware’s allegation.

‘Riverdale’ Actress Vanessa Morgan Criticizes Hollywood for It’s Depiction of Black People

Riverdale’ actress Vanessa Morgan criticizes Hollywood’s depiction of Black people.

Morgan plays Toni Topaz on the hit series ‘Riverdale’ and was bumped from a recurring to a regular role in ‘Riverdale’s third season.

“Lmao too bad I’m the only black series regular but also paid the least,” Morgan added in a separate message to a fan on June 2. “Girl I could go on for days.”

She later clarified her statements and added the show has “nothing to do with my fellow castmates and friends,” as they have no impact on the writing and don’t “call the shots.”

In relevant news, following the death of George Floyd, a video with Denzel Washington helping a man with a police encounter is going viral and fans are calling the actor a real-life superhero.

On May 22, TMZ reported Washington stopped and helped a homeless man who was “in some peril with oncoming traffic.”

Video footage of the incident shows Denzel Washington comforting the man and waiting with the man during an encounter with police.

TMZ reported the man was “detained — not sure why but possibly to make sure he was okay — then released.”
