Coronavirus: Australia’s Film Industry Could See a Major Boom After Shutdown

As the world gets ready for a “new normal”, Australia is positioning themselves for a potential boom in Hollywood filmmaking.

According to a new report by The Age, Australia could see a major rise in the number of Hollywood productions. Ausfilm leader Kate Marks says the agency has “18 Hollywood feature films and TV shows looking to film in Australia and planning on spending over $900 million.

She says the agency has only a small-time frame to convert some of those interests into solid commitments and is looking for an immediate increase of the Location Incentive fund. The current fund, which was established in 2018 and expires in 2013, has used only $18 million of its $140 million film credits.

“The location fund has been really successful, but once it runs out the projects run out,” she says.

The government is expected to make an announcement to help the film industry, but details have not been released.

Before the Coronavirus related shutdown, Australia was set to see a large number of hit movies including several Marvel productions and the TV series ‘Clickbait’ and ‘Shantaram’. Due to the shutdown, the impact hurt $725 million of foreign investment scheduled for 2020 and 2021. In fact, according to The Age, Fox Studios was to become the production studio for a new Thor movie once Marvel’s Shang-Chi wrapped, but both movies now face an uncertain future.

“With everything we had going on before shutdown if the year had gone to plan we were pretty close to capacity,” she said.

Australia typically has a large number of advantages in comparison to other countries across the world. These advantages including common language, good weather, highly-regarded actors, crew and production facilities. That said, the number one advantage is the exchange rate and government assistance available to foreign productions.

Recently, the exchange rate was favorable, coupled with a 16.5% film tax credit, Australia provides benefits better than most countries. Effectively, the Location Incentive Fund can provide a benefit to foreign productions exceeding 30%.

Ausfilm, a private sector organization with 52 members working across Hollywood, has argued for a permanent increase to increase to a competitive 30%.

“A location offset is better than a location incentive fund because it gives the producers certainty,” says Ms Marks. “We’re trying to drive inward investment but also create ongoing and secure jobs – and the only way to achieve a consistent and ongoing pipeline of projects is through an offset that allows these companies to plan ahead.”

Australia is not alone. Georgia’s film industry is preparing for a major rebound after the Coronavirus. Lee Thomas, Deputy Commissioner of the Georgia Film, Music and Digital Entertainment Office, a division of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, says more TV shows and film projects could come to Georgia as the Peach State recovers from the Coronavirus faster than other states.

Thomas provided an update on Georgia’s film industry on June 2nd at a virtual luncheon near the Sandy Springs Perimeter Chamber.

Thomas reportedly discussed how California and New York are seriously impacted by the Coronavirus, which gives Georgia an opportunity to beat their competitors. “There were projects that had stages they had holds on starting in late summer, but the projects in those stages beforehand haven’t finished their work yet. It’s going to be interesting how these sound stages can accommodate all the projects coming in, not only the projects coming back but also the new ones scheduled.

“We’ll also get even more projects coming from other states because Georgia is reopening faster than other states. … We also have all these new streaming services’ projects.”

That said, two projects scheduled to film in Georgia, were pushed back until September.

Kerry Washington Reveals What It Was Like to Audition for ‘Scandal’

Kerry Washington opens up about her acting career and what it was like to audition for ‘Scandal‘.

Kerry Washington recently opened up with Terry Gross on NPR’s ‘Fresh Air‘. In the interview, Washington spoke about what she enjoys about acting, why she got started, and the reasoning why the role of Olivia Pope on ‘Scandal’ is important to her.

She says drama classes were fun due to the relationship with other actors. She says, “I had a lot of stage fright. I loved being part of a community of artists. Like, that’s what I always loved about theater companies. And I loved getting lost in the storytelling. I didn’t really love, like, performing in front of people (laughter). Like, I was nervous about the part – when it felt like it was me on stage, I was nervous. When it felt like it was a team of people on stage or it felt like I was another character on stage, then there was, like, real comfort.”

Washington realizes her acting background helped her when she went to private school. During her time at Spence School, many of her classmates were wealthier than she was. She explains, “I think it was, you know, that early exposure to code-shifting I think was the beginning of my interest in acting in some way. And not that I was acting my way through junior high school and high school, but I did start to realize that you could shift the perception of who you are by taking on different characteristics in the world.”

Washington touched on her audition for the role of Olivia Pope and how she felt she was perfect for the role, even though other actors felt the same way. She says, “When the script for Scandal was circulating – this has been talked about a lot in the press, but there hadn’t been a black woman as the lead of a network drama in almost 40 years. And I was – I don’t – around 35, 34, 35 at the time. So in my lifetime, I had never seen a network drama with a black woman as the lead. So this was a highly coveted role. And Shonda [Rhimes] really – she said she saw almost every black actress in Hollywood between the ages of, you know, 19 and 60. She really wanted to give everybody a shot. So when I read the script, I thought, this is mine. Like, it felt like it was written for me. It brought together so many of my worlds and so much of my life experience, working in Washington, working on the campaigns. I really felt like I was born to play her, but there were, like, 20 other actresses who felt the same way. So there were a series of auditions, several auditions. And first, I had a meeting with Shonda and then several auditions. And eventually, I really had the privilege of being able to take this on.”

‘Riverdale’ Creator Promises to Do Better and Support Black Actors and Characters

Riverdale‘ creator promises to do better while supporting the Black Lives Matter movement.

‘Riverdale’ actress Vanessa Morgan took a stand to support Black actors in Hollywood. Via Twitter, Morgan criticized our Black actors are sidelined and put into stereotypical roles and written to push the storyline along for white characters. Morgan also included ‘Riverdale’ in her criticism and revealed the show pays her less than her white co-stars. After going viral and receiving massive support, she promised to no longer accept roles, which do not accurately represent Black people.

After her statements, ‘Riverdale’ creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa replied. He voiced his support for Morgan and openly admitted she is right and the show must do better.

“We hear Vanessa. We love Vanessa. She’s right. We’re sorry and we make the same promise to you that we did to her. We will do better to honor her and the character she plays. As well as all of our actors and characters of color. CHANGE is happening and will continue to happen. Riverdale will get bigger, not smaller. Riverdale will be part of the movement, not outside it. All of the Riverdale writers made a donation to @BLMLA, but we know where the work must happen for us. In the writers’ room.”

In relevant news, Michael B. Jordan calls on Hollywood to hire more Black people.

On Saturday, actor Michael B. Jordan called out police brutality and racial injustice at a protest organized by the four major talent agencies in Hollywood.

The actor whose acting career was launched by the 2013 indie film ‘Fruitvale Station’, called Hollywood to hire more black people and increase diversity.

“You committed to a 50/50 gender parity in 2020,” Jordan said. “Where is the challenge to commit to black hiring? Black content led by black executives, black consultants. Are you policing our storytelling as well? Let us bring our darkness to the light.”

“You committed to a 50/50 gender parity in 2020,” Jordan said. “Where is the challenge to commit to black hiring? Black content led by black executives, black consultants. Are you policing our storytelling as well? Let us bring our darkness to the light.”

Thousands of people organized and protest demanding an end to systemic racism after the death of George Floyd due to Minneapolis police officers.

This is not the first time Michael B. Jordan called for more diversity. In 2018, the actor committed to making the entertainment industry more diversity by making his company Outlier Society Productions would use inclusion riders for all upcoming projects. An inclusion rider is a clause in an actor’s contract, which allows them to set the diversity requirements for a cast and crew before working on a project.

“Anybody that deals with me, if you have racist beliefs, if you have a racist bone in your body, if you’re not with me, if you don’t stand with me and people that look like me, you don’t need to be with me,” he added. “I use my power to demand diversity but it’s time that studios and agencies do so.”

In 2013, Michael B. Jordan’s breakout role ‘Fruitvale Station’ follows the final days of Oscar Grant, an unarmed black man who was killed by an Oakland, California police officer in 2009.

In relevant news, ‘Fantastic Four‘ director says he wanted to cast a black actress for the role of Sue Storm in the 2015 feature film. However, the studio said no.

The director recently had an interview with ‘Geeks of Color’ and discussed the casting of the superhero movie. He explained he had plans for the cast, but received “pushback” from the studio.

“There were a lot of controversial conversations that were had behind-the-scenes on that. I was mostly interested in a black Sue Storm, a black Johnny Storm, and a black Franklin Storm,” Trank stated. “But when you’re dealing with a studio on a massive movie like that, everybody wants to keep an open mind to who the big stars are going to be.”

‘Fantastic Four’ Director Says Studio Stopped Him From Casting Black Actress

Fantastic Four director says he wanted to cast a black actress for the role of Sue Storm in the 2015 feature film.

He said he had no one in mind for the role of Sue Storm. “When it came down to it, I found a lot of pretty heavy pushback on casting a black woman in that role,” he said.

Eventually, Kate Mara played Sue Storm, Michael B. Jordan played Johnny Storm, Miles Teller played Reed Richards and Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm. Fox released the movie before the intellectual property rights went to Disney.

After his experience, he says he should have left the project in protest.

“Because those aren’t the values I stand for in my own life, and those weren’t the values then or ever for me.

“When I look back on that, I should have just walked when that realization hit me, and I feel embarrassed about that, that I didn’t just out of principle,” he said. “Because those aren’t the values, I stand for in my own life, and those weren’t the values then or ever for me. Because I’m somebody who always talks about standing up for what I believe in, even if it means burning my career out, and I feel bad that I didn’t take it to the mat with that issue. I feel like I failed in that regard.”

In 2014, Disney hiredJosh Trank to direct a stand-alone ‘Star Wars’ film, but he left the project several months later. Trank said it was a personal decision. However, news outlets reported studios dismissed him from the project due to problems that took place on the set of ‘Fantastic Four’, and the lack of communication with the studio’s producers. Trank told the Los Angeles Times the reason he left the movie because he wanted to do a smaller film, due to the amount of criticism ‘Fantastic Four’ received.

In relevant news, ‘Riverdale’ actress Vanessa Morgan criticizes Hollywood’s depiction of Black people.

After the protests of George Floyd’s death, ‘Riverdale’ star Vanessa Morgan is using this time to teach her followers about Hollywood’s systemic racism and the lack of meaningful roles that actors of colors are offered.

In a social media post on May 31, Morgan called out the TV industry. “Tired of how black people are portrayed in media, tired of us being portrayed as thugs, dangerous or angry scary people,” she wrote in the note. “Tired of us also being used as sidekick nondimensional characters to our white leads. Or only used in the ads for diversity but not actually in the show.”

California Gov. Newsom Announces TV, Movie Filming Can Resume Next Week

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announcers TV and Film production can restart on June 12th.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom broke the news on Friday and revealed guidelines for film and TV productions to start filming in Hollywood following the Coronavirus COVID-19 related shutdown.

“Music, TV and film production may resume in California, recommended no sooner than June 12, 2020, and subject to approval by county public health officers within the jurisdictions of operations following their review of local epidemiological data including cases per 100,000 population, rate of test positivity, and local preparedness to support a health care surge, vulnerable populations, contact tracing and testing,” the California Department of Public Health said in a statement via the Governor’s Office on Friday. “To reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, productions, cast, crew and other industry workers should abide by safety protocols agreed by labor and management, which may be further enhanced by county public health officers. Back office staff and management should adhere to Office Workspace guidelines published by the California Department of Public Health and the California Department of Industrial Relations, to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.”

Production stopped in early March, and it is currently unclear when it will actually restart, according to Fox News.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers related a 22-page document on Coronavirus and submitted it on Monday for approval to officials in New York, California, and Los Angeles.

However, union officials say the on-set guidelines still need to be addressed. The report calls for regular testing of crew members, six-foot physical distancing, and personal protective equipment. Reports suggest the new protocols could increase production costs by 20%.

In relevant news, the Chicago Film Office announced this week they would start issuing film permits.

City officials announced Chicago’s health metrics are on track for a transition from Phase 2 (Stay at Home) to Phase 3 (Cautiously Reopen) in early June. As a result, some of the city’s services will increase operations.  As a result, the Chicago Film Office will start issuing film permits starting June 15, 2020, for productions with crews with ten or fewer people. “We are working with the Illinois Film Office to develop these guidelines further for when larger film production can resume safely. At this time, some support services from the City of Chicago may be limited.”
