Lea Michele Apologizes After Black Actress Samantha Ware Accuses Her of Bad Behavior On Set: ‘I will be better’

Actress Lea Michele is responding to the accusation she made a Black Glee co-star, Samantha Ware, life a “living hell” in 2015.

On Wednesday morning, Michele shared a statement on Instagram responding to actress Samantha Ware’s claim. She did not respond to Ware directly, nor did she address the fact she lost her HelloFresh deal over Ware’s allegation.

“One of the most important lessons of the last few weeks is that we need to take the time to listen and learn about other people’s perspectives and any role we have played or anything we can do to help address the injustices that they face,” Michele wrote. “When I tweeted the other day, it was meant to be a show of support for our friends and neighbors and communities of color during this really difficult time,” referring to her tweet, posted on May 29, addressing the death of George Floyd and supporting the Black Lives Matter movement.

She continued, “But the responses I received to what I posted have made me also focus specifically on how my own behavior towards fellow cast members was perceived by them.”

“While I don’t remember ever making this specific statement and I have never judged others by their background or color of their skin, that’s not really the point,” Michele continued. “What matters is that I clearly acted in ways which hurt other people. Whether it was my privileged position and perspective that caused me to be perceived as insensitive or inappropriate at times or whether it was just my immaturity and me just being unnecessarily difficult, I apologize for my behavior and for any pain which I have caused. We all can grow and change and I have definitely used these past several months to reflect on my own shortcomings.”

Michele concluded by writing, “I am a couple of months from becoming a mother and I know I need to keep working to better myself and take responsibility for my actions, so that I can be a real role model for my child and so I can pass along my lessons and mistakes, so that they can learn from me. I listened to these criticisms and I am learning and while I am very sorry, I will be better in the future from this experience.”

A post shared by Lea Michele (@leamichele) on

This news comes after Ware retweeted Michele’s post about Floyd and wrote about the actress, who played Rachel Berry, made her “first television gig a living hell.” Ware claimed Michele told members of the show she would s—in Ware’s wig if she had the opportunity among “other traumatic micro aggressions that made her question her career in Hollywood.” Ware had joined the cast in 2015, the final season of the show, to play Jane Hayward.

HelloFresh, a meal kit delivery service, immediately ended its deal with Michele, posting on Twitter the brand “does not condone racism nor discrimination of any kind. We are disheartened and disappointed to learn of the recent claims concerning Lea Michele. We take this very seriously, and have ended our partnership with Lea Michele, effective immediately.”

Nike Releases “Don’t Do It” Video Calling for Change and the End to Racism (VIDEO)

Nike released a message across their social media platforms calling for people to take a stand and fight systemic racism and social injustice.

The video turns the company’s iconic slogan backward of “Just Do It” to “For Once, just don’t do it.” The clip comes after protests across America following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The video continues with “Don’t pretend there’s not a problem in America. Don’t turn your back on racism. Don’t accept innocent lives being taken from us. Don’t make any more excuses. Don’t think this doesn’t affect you. Don’t sit back and be silent. Don’t think you can’t be part of the change. Let’s all be part of the change.”

Yahoo Finance received an internal Nike email sent to staff from Nike CEO John Donahue saying the following:

“Team, As we’ve watched racial tragedies expose prejudice and injustice in our cities over these past few weeks, I can’t stop thinking about the individuals impacted: Ahmaud Arbery. Christian Cooper. Breonna Taylor. George Floyd. The horrible killings and racist actions serve as a sickening reminder of what too many people live through every day in America. It is absolutely wrong what’s happening in our communities, to our friends and family members. These tragedies are not unique to the U.S. Far from it –- we see violent incidents in countries all over the world, fueled by hatred and ignorance.

Let me be as clear as I can: Nike is opposed to bigotry. We are opposed to hatred and inequality in all its forms, indirect and overt. While Nike cannot solve injustice, I believe we have a responsibility to work toward addressing it to the best of our ability.

I know these have been a difficult few months. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought additional fear and tragedy into our lives, with striking disparities in how certain populations have experienced this crisis, particularly in the United States. With its devastating impact on communities of color – including Black, Latinx, Asian and Native American populations – COVID-19 has further exposed deep-seated inequities that are sadly systemic in our society.

It has also served as a reminder of the racism that is still far too prevalent in our culture. Racial bigotry has created enormous pain and tragedy in the Black community. And since the start of the pandemic, we have seen a disturbing increase in racism toward Asian communities worldwide. The fact that these injustices –- and too many others – continue is horrific and unacceptable. I know many teammates in the U.S. and around the world are feeling tired of having to justify their existence and to fight for their dignity and humanity.

I encourage all of us to not be daunted by the enormity of what we face today. The tragedies we face, we face together. We choose to act in a way that is authentic and true to our values. We are compelled by our purpose: Until We All Win. And we will never ever quit until that becomes a reality.”

It is important to note in 2018, Nike highlighted social injustice with the Dream Crazy campaign with former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The storyline centered around standing up for your beliefs, and it led to a 31% sales boost in Nike online says.

Coronavirus: Analysts Predict Box Office Will Drop 52%

Due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, analysts predict it will have a dramatic impact on box office revenue.

According to a study from research company MoffettNathanson and first reported by Variety, revenues from ticket sales will be cut in half in comparison to 2019. The analysts see numbers dropping from $11.4 billion in 2019 to $5.5 billion in 2020. That’s a 52% plunge, and it’s a drop that could be even steeper if cinemas don’t reopen in July.

Moreover, if summer hit movies such as John David Washington’s “Tenet” and “Mulan” are supposed to debut that month get delayed, those numbers could be even worse.

Wall Street Analysts predict it could be hard for studios behind those expensively made movies to continue if significant markets do not reopen their movie theaters.

“Given the uncertainty around the key questions we mention above, including sticking to July release dates, when key markets reopen and willingness of movie-goers to return before a vaccine, our estimates today are very much a work in process with lots of volatility in the months ahead,” the note’s authors report.

Analysts see a significant return to revenue in 2021 to $9.7 billion, which will include a “stronger release slate.” That said, they know this number could also plummet if film production cannot resume safely, or if studios continue to release movies on streaming platforms.

Since the Coronavirus pandemic, studios have tried several strategies to release content, including airing their content on their streaming platforms. Case in point, HBOMax released “Scoob,” and Disney Plus released “Hamilton.” Other studios such as Universal have put their movies-on-demand instead of delaying the movie’s release date.

“In the past, exhibitors have been able to stand their ground; however, we again think this time is different in that all of the major studios (including now Disney for certain movies) are likely to be more aggressive with windowing strategies,” the note reads. “As long as multiple studios push forward with PVOD or some other form of window changes, the balance of power in favor of studios shifts even more in their favor and reduce the leverage the exhibitors have as they would be unlikely to boycott multiple studios’ upcoming releases.”

‘Law & Order’ Spinoff Series Fires Writer After Threatening to ‘Light Up’ Looters

Dick Wolf fires ‘Law & Order’ spinoff series writer after threatening to “light up” looters.

Craig Gore, a writer known for his work on “S.W.A.T.” and “Chicago P.D.” was fired from the upcoming “Law & Order” spinoff series after posting on Facebook relating to looting and curfews across Los Angeles.

“I will not tolerate this conduct, especially during our hour of national grief. I am terminating Craig Gore immediately,” Dick Wolf said in a statement to Variety.

Gore posted on social media holding a weapon with the caption “Curfew…,” while another comment, Gore says he will “light motherf—ers up who are trying to f— with my property,” in reference to a protest that took place on Sunset Blvd. on June 1st.

His posts were reportedly brought to the attention of Drew Janda, a post-production assistant on the OWN series “Greenleaf,” who also worked on HBO shows including “Big Little Lies” and “Barry.”

Gore says he is working on the new Chris Meloni series, which is currently in development at NBC and he says he is the “co-executive producer on ‘Law & Order: Organized Crime” on his Facebook profile. However, Chris Meloni replied to Janda’s tweet saying he has “no idea who this person is or what they do.”

In relevant news, people are sharing black squares on social media today. Your social media timeline may have changed. On Tuesday, instead of selfies and memes, you may notice people posting a black square with the hashtag #TheShowMustBePaused.

The black photos are part of a movement called Blackout Tuesday, which was created by two female Black women executives, Jamila Thomas and Brianna Agyemang.

“In response to the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmad Arbery and countless other Black citizens at the hands of the police, #TheShowMustBePaused is an initiative created … in observance of the long-standing racism and inequality that exists from the boardroom to the boulevard,” a statement on the movement’s website explains. “We will not continue to conduct business as usual without regard for Black lives.”

TikTok is Donating Millions To Fight Racial Inequality

TikTok donates millions of dollars to support racial equality and Coronavirus.

TikTok says a “technical glitch,” which occurred last week, causing videos using #BlackLivesMatter and #GeorgeFloyd hashtags have no views. The video company announced they would do a better job representing and supporting Black content creators.

Many TikTok users thought it was active censorship by the company, which is owned by Chinese internet giant ByteDance. However, TikTok executives claimed the issue was a “display” problem. The company said videos with #BlackLivesMatter hashtag already had over 2 billion views.

“We acknowledge and apologize to our Black creators and community who have felt unsafe, unsupported, or suppressed,” Vanessa Pappas, TikTok’s U.S. GM, and director of creator community Kudzi Chikumbu wrote in a blog post on Monday. “We don’t ever want anyone to feel that way. We welcome the voices of the Black community wholeheartedly.”

It is also essential to note June 1st is the first day for the incoming TikTok CEO Kevin Mayer, a former Disney executive. In a blog post, Mayer said: “As I begin my work at TikTok, it has never been a more important time to support Black employees, users, creators, artists, and our broader community. I am making this commitment from today, my Day 1.”

Mayer added, “Words can only go so far. I invite our community to hold us accountable for the actions we take over the coming weeks, months, and years. Black Lives Matter.”

TikTok says they are working on ways to “elevate and support Black voices and causes.”

TikTok says they are working on identifying and removing racist content, which violates their terms of service, as well as approving their appeals process over content moderation. TikTok also says it is establishing a “creator diversity council” to boost “voices driving culture, creativity, and important conversations on the platform,” and developing a creator portal to improve communication and collaboration “for our broader creator community,” Pappas and Chikumbu wrote.

TikTok is also donating $3 million to nonprofit organizations that help the black community, which has been disproportionally affected by the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. The company will also pledge another $1 million toward “fighting the racial injustice and inequality that we are witnessing in this country,” the execs said.

‘Mission: Impossible 7’ to Restart Production this September

Paramount is planning to restart production “Mission: Impossible 7’ this September after production shut down due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

“We hope to restart in September. We hope to visit all the countries we planned to,” the film’s first assistant director, Tommy Gormley, said in an interview Tuesday on BBC Radio 4’s “Today.”  “We hope to do a big chunk of it back in the U.K. on the backlot and in the studio, so September through to end April-May is our target.”

The studio plans to start production this September, according to reports.

Director Christopher McQuarrie’s production was only four to five days away from starting shooting in Venice, Italy, in February when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the production to stop, Gormley said. Italy was walloped by the virus, with 233,000 cases and 33,000 deaths.

Gormely praised the guidelines this week by the British Film Commission on how to film safely during the pandemic.

“If we have the protocols in place and we break down all the procedures very carefully,” he said, “we will get it going again. Some things are very challenging, such as stunt scenes, crowd scenes, et cetera, but we can’t do a ‘Mission: Impossible’ movie and not have a fight scene or car scenes in it.”

Tom Cruise will reprise his iconic role of Ethan Hunt in the movie alongside Vanessa Kirby, Rebecca Ferguson, Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Esai Morales. The film will hit theaters by November 19, 2021.

In relevant news, Tom Cruise is reportedly working on his next action movie in space with the help of billionaire Elon Musk and NASA.

According to Deadline, it could be the first movie shot in space. Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. reports,  “I’m hearing that Tom Cruise and Elon Musk’s SpaceX are working on a project with NASA that would be the first narrative feature film — an action-adventure — to be shot in outer space,” Fleming Jr. writes, referencing the private space travel program the Tesla founder launched in 2002. “It’s not a Mission: Impossible film and no studio is in the mix at this stage but look for more news as I get it. But this is real, albeit in the early stages of liftoff.”

Spike Lee’s New Short Film Connects ‘Do The Right Thing’ with George Floyd

Spike Lee releases a new short film about police brutality after the death of George Floyd

As protests spread across America following the death of George Floyd and police brutality, many people have made references to Spike Lee’s 1989 film ‘Do The Right Thing’. Now the director made a short film with his new short film, ‘3 Brothers’. Premiering on Don Lemon-hosted CNN special, I Can’t Breathe: Black Men Living and Dying in America, and later posted to Spike Lee’s official Instagram and Twitter accounts, the short video features the climactic scene from ‘Do The Right Thing’ with footage of the deaths of Floyd and Eric Garner. “What we’re seeing today is not new,” Lee told Lemon. “We’ve seen this again and again, and again.”

The video points to how Black people across America continue to get killed by police and are often victims at the hands of police brutality. In ‘Do The Right Thing’, Raheem (Bill Nunn) is killed sparking a protest when Mookie (played by Spike Lee) throws a trash can through a window of the neighborhood pizza restaurant.

A post shared by Spike Lee (@officialspikelee) on

This is the second short film Spike Lee has released in the last year. Last month, ‘New York New York’ was a tribute to NYC and it went viral. June 12th his latest full-length feature film, ‘Da 5 Bloods’, will debut exclusively on Netflix. The movie will feature a character who is an African American Donald Trump supporter. “My mother taught me at an early age that black folks are not a monolithic group,” Lee recently told the New York Times. “In order to make the story dramatic, I said, ‘What would be the most extreme thing we could do with one of the characters?’”

In the interview, he says the upcoming movie is making a bigger point. “All of us, and humanity as a whole, have to learn to think about more than just ourselves.” He furthered this point on CNN saying, “This stuff is diverse: I’m seeing a whole lot of white young people out there who are joining with us in the show of our displeasure with this country … The reason why people are out is because black people are being killed left and right.”

Jimmy Fallon Gives Emotional Apology After Blackface Controversy (VIDEO)

Jimmy Fallon delivers an emotional apology after the blackface controversy.

A ‘Saturday Night Live’ sketch from 2000 featuring Jimmy Fallon wearing blackface makeup and impersonating Chris Rock recently went viral, sparking outrage. Despite being advised to not discuss the issue, Fallon tweeted an apology last week.

“I am very sorry for making this unquestionably offensive decision and thank all of you for holding me accountable.”

‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ returned on Monday after being off the air last week and doubled down on his apology and promised to be a better ally.

During his opening monologue, Fallon addressed the blackface sketch saying, “I am not a racist.” But, he did admit to being “silent” in the past during acts of racial injustice.

The incident comes during the time the nation is dealing with systemic police brutality. Protests and riots have sparked across the country after the death of George Floyd.

“The world is screaming and it is angry and we all need to figure out a way to take the anger, which of course is just sadness and fear, and do something with it,” said Fallon. “This is such a long root in the ground it is so long and deep, but we got to get in there and we have to dig it up.”

Lady Gaga was supposed to appear on the show. However, Fallon spoke with leaders and activists in the black community. Civil rights activist Jane Elliott, CNN host Don Lemon and NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson all offered advice people can help the black community.

“That was powerful, but most importantly it’s about courage,” said Johnson, responding to Fallon’s apology. “In this time of many people searching for answers and just the display of anger and hopelessness and wandering more people need to speak about where they are with a really authentic voice.”

BLACK LIVES MATTER.

A post shared by Kylie ? (@kyliejenner) on

It was deliberate to choose Tuesday, June 2nd as it “intentionally (disrupts) the work week. Monday suggests a long weekend and we can’t wait until Friday for change. It is a day to take a beat for an honest, reflective and productive conversation about what actions we need to collectively take to support the Black community.”

“This is not just a 24-hour initiative. We are and will be in this fight for the long haul. We are tired and can’t change things along.”

To participate, the founders suggest people who have been “impacted by recent events … take a break — there is a lot going on and sometimes we all just need a minute. Take that minute.”

They also suggest donating to relevant causes and researching anti-racism information.

Other platforms including Spotify are spreading the message. The music platform is adding to select playlists an 8-minute, 46 second track of silence, which is the amount of time a Minneapolis police officer placed his knee on George Floyd’s neck.

Supporters of Blackout Tuesday are encouraging participants to use #TheShowMustBePaused, as the founders originally specified, and #BlackoutTuesday and not #BlackLivesMatter hashtag. The goal is to allow people to access important information about the group and by using #BlackLivesMatter hashtag you could indirectly silence African American voices addressing the issues on the platforms.

In relevant news, following the death of George Floyd, a video with Denzel Washington helping a man with a police encounter is going viral and fans are calling the actor a real-life superhero.

On May 22, TMZ reported Washington stopped and helped a homeless man who was “in some peril with oncoming traffic.”

Video footage of the incident shows Denzel Washington comforting the man and waiting with the man during an encounter with police.

TMZ reported the man was “detained — not sure why but possibly to make sure he was okay — then released.”

Hollywood Filmmaking May Go Virtual After the Coronavirus Pandemic

Virtual filmmaking may become the new normal after the Coronavirus pandemic.

Over a hundred TV shows and movies have shut down production due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 related shutdown. Now, as the world begins their “New Normal,” a new report suggests more movies will become virtual due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Whether its actors are reading lines over Zoom video conferences, or using computer images instead of live-action scenes, a CNBC report reveals virtual production is on track to become the new future for filmmaking.

Guy Williams, an Academy Award-nominated visual effects supervisor for Weta Digital, a digital visual effects company founded by “Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson back in 1993, spoke with CNBC. He explained the tools to create movies could be used post-pandemic.

“With Covid-19, we are finding that a lot of the tools that we offer are much more applicable to the challenges of creating a film in a post COVID world,” said Guy Williams.

″[Long-term], the idea is that virtual production and physical production will merge in a way that you cannot tell them apart,” Williams said.

However, it raises expenses for movies, but it comes with its advantages. For example,  instead of paying for travel for on-location shoots, a director can invest in making changes later into a film’s production. Ultimately, virtual production leads to social distancing, allowing filmmakers to make movies without ever having people working on set.

“In a post-COVID world, we have to get movies up and running while abiding by the recommended guidelines for safety,” Conley said. “Now, this does not mean we can replace actors or remove the entire live-action process, but virtual production allows us to plan to make movies, requiring fewer live-action elements.”

The technology also allows for more creativity. Rebellion Studios, the film division of a UK-based media company, which produces video games, books, and VFX services, is currently creating film content with their video game software. The team is remotely doing the Camerawork.

“Instead of expensive post-production processes, virtual production brings a huge amount of the visual work forward, allowing the filmmakers to plan their shoot differently,” said Ben Smith, Rebellion’s head of film, TV, and publishing told CNBC.

“With virtual production, new skills are creating new opportunities,” Smith said. “When crews are already having to think about completely new workflows [because of COVID], this is the perfect time to re-imagine this wholesale.”

That said, it is more expensive to film productions virtually, and not all actors enjoy working in a virtual environment. As CNBC points out, actor Sir Ian McKellen said he was “miserable” on the set of “The Hobbit”.

“I was miserable,” McKellen said in a 2018 interview. “I don’t remember a green screen on The Lord of the Rings. If Gandalf were on top of a mountain, I’d be there on the mountain.”

“If the pipeline creates an environment that actors do not like working in, then it [virtual production] is not doing its job,” Guy Williams said. “If any part of the virtual process is limiting, then we try to fix it. It is a supporting tool, not a restricting tool.”

In relevant news, there is a discussion on how to lower the number of crew workers on set as Hollywood works with unions to safely resume TV and film production.

According to a new Deadline report, while many film crew jobs are getting cut, there is a rise in certain positions on set including medics, temperature takers, coronavirus test-takers, and sanitizers to make sure sets are safe.

Hollywood is Reportedly Looking to Cut Film Crew Jobs Except for Medics

There is a discussion on how to lower the number of crew workers on set as Hollywood works with unions to safely resume TV and film production.

According to a new Deadline report, while many film crew jobs are getting cut, there is a rise in certain positions on set including medics, temperature takers, coronavirus test-takers, and sanitizers to make sure sets are safe.

Deadline added that every producer who is planning on starting new projects say they expect to pay for at least a dozen people who will have the sole job responsibility of keeping the set safe. In addition, IATSE Local 80 tells Deadline, they have certified set medics who are ready to get to work.

“The training our members already have makes them uniquely qualified to handle what’s going on now,” said Davis, who is also IATSE’s 2nd international vice president. “They’re referred to as set medics, but they’re all, at a minimum, emergency medical technicians; most are paramedics, and a good number are nurses, as well.”

“I’ll tell you what,” Davis said. “If you’re having a heart attack on set, you will want to be with one of our folks. They know exactly what to do and how to get you where you need to be. But this virus is so new that the entire medical establishment is still learning.”

That said, training will be required for everyone working on set. The IATSE union is implementing a high-level training program for medics to prevent the virus. “Right now we’re looking at stepped-up training, subject to this virus,” he said. “We’re putting the finishing touches on a program for that. Our members are well-suited for an advanced role on the set. They have the training; they have the knowledge, and they have the background for that. So we’ve put together a program to enhance the knowledge and training that they’ve already undergone to expand and ensure another level of safety for the crew and the production as a whole. I would think the employers would want to take advantage of that knowledge and experience.”

In related news, after the Coronavirus pandemic shutdown of all filming productions across the UK, movies such as The Batman are allowed to continue filming.

The British Film Commission and the British Film Institute came together to create a list of guidelines that the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), Public Health England and the Health and Safety Executive, meaning the United Kingdom film and TV production can start filming.
