Hundreds of Black Actors Demand Change and Dissociation with Police

0

Hundreds of Black actors, filmmakers, artists, and influencers are demanding industries they work to cut their ties to the police, pay Black actors better, and promote Black leaders.

On Juneteeth, industry actors and directors including Sterling K. Brown, Gabrielle Union, Cynthia Erivo, Ava DuVernay, Barry Jenkins, Nia DaCosta, Trevor Noah, Lena Waithe, Justin Simien, Lee Daniels, Dee Rees, Franklin Leonard, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Niecy Nash, Thandie Newton, Janet Mock, and others signed their names to an artists’ statement for the collective Black Artists for Freedom.

In the statement, the Black actors say the current protests advocating the end to systemic racism and police brutality has inspired them to “build on their necessary demands — including, chiefly, the abolition of police and the complete dismantling of the racist prison-industrial system.”

The goal is to “amplify the movement’s work and to call out our own industries for what they are: institutions the promote colonialism, capitalism and racism, and that function in exploitative and destructive ways.” In addition, the statement adds those signed are looking to “eliminate” racist stereotypes of Black people in media.

In the series of demands, there is a call to end the media’s ties to the police. The Black Artists for Freedom calls on theaters, studios, and other venues to end their contracts with law enforcement. The statement also calls for these institutions to “publicly condemn the institution of police as a violent force that exists to further class divisions and capitalistic exploitation which harm our communities.”

The statement says it wants to promote the current movement to defund the police and by cutting the police off from the previously mentioned industries, which is “a first and clear step that cultural institutions must take toward the broader call to defund the police nationwide.”

Other initiatives in the statement including hiring Black talent, paying them fairly, mentoring, and marketing their projects. The statement also calls for the hiring of Black leaders and executives to learn more about Black history.

In relevant news, thousands of British actors, producers, and TV professionals have signed an open letter to the United Kingdom film industry calling for an end to “systemic racism”.

  • Empower black and brown independent producers
  • Expand your vision
  • Be more demanding

Industry-leading British actors and professionals that signed the letter include Noel Clarke, David Oyelowo, Sophie Okonedo, Meera Syal, Gurinder Chadha, Asif Kapadia, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, David Harewood and Himesh Patel.

British Actors Sign Letter Demanding End to “Systemic Racism” in The Film Industry

“Our stories are referred to as “too small” because they do not centre around white characters or a small subset of actors whom you deem valuable; they are not always written by the same white writers that you deem to be “safe”,” the letter reads.

This news comes after a Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic TV Task Force wrote a similar letter to UK networks, streaming platforms, and the government calling for change. The letter had 700 signatures last week and the task force grew to hundreds of members following the death of George Floyd at the hands of American police officers and the meteoric rise of the Black Lives Matter movement.

You can read the full letter below:

Dear UK Film and TV Industry,

Having been inspired by the Black Film Collective who put together a powerful open letter to Hollywood last week on behalf of many brothers and sisters in the industry, we would like to send you something in collaboration with them, which we feel addresses our continuing issues with the UK industry.

This letter is from your colleagues in the UK – Black and Brown (inc. all Asians) independent producers, writers, directors and actors in alliance with many advocates for change. As one extended community, we require your active engagement to tackle structural and systemic racism in our industry, in the UK and around the world.

While messages condemning racism and advocating for solidarity on social media may inspire hope, the UK Industry must put its money and practices where its mouth is. A direct line can be drawn from the stories and voices that are silenced and ignored, to the discrimination and biases that are pervasive in the entertainment industry and larger society. This moment in history presents an opportunity for you to be a positive partner for change.

Our aim is that this letter produces strategic commitments from you to reshape our industry into one whose words are supported by action. Toward that end:

1. Banish “Your Weak Excuses”

Banish “it’s too small” from your lexicon. It is insulting to our stories, our history, our impact on world culture, and our worth. Our stories are referred to as “too small” because they do not centre around white characters or a small subset of actors whom you deem valuable; they are not always written by the same white writers that you deem to be “safe”. Banish “we already have a diverse project on our slate”.

There is room for more than one. You make countless projects with similar themes and storylines with white creatives. Banish “that feels risky”. We know we are introducing you to new unproven talent, but why is the same white man (who has made a string of flops after his one hit 10 years ago) still deemed less risky than a new brown or black writer with original and well written ideas. We know that many of our stories feel unfamiliar to you because they go against your preconceived notions of us and make you step outside your familiar world. But they are familiar to us.

Hire us and together let us tell truthful, bold and imaginative stories from rich new perspectives. There are countless men and women in the streets right now, putting their lives, health, and livelihoods on the line, fighting for an end to systemic racism. There will be no end until financiers, distributors and the community of decision-makers cease this practice of marginalising our voices and our stories. If Black lives matter to you, our stories and the scale on which they are marketed and distributed must as well.

2. Empower Black and Brown Independent Producers

Hiring Black and Brown writers and directors is of course of great importance, but rarely is this opportunity given to Black and Brown independent producers. Only 5% of the producers supported by the BFI in 2018/19 were producers of colour. This is especially troubling because producers often work with multiple writers and directors. Supporting one producer effectively supports many Black and Brown professionals above and below the line. Take a deeper look at the community of Black and Brown independent producers, working hand in hand with talented directors.

Many have compelling slates of projects in need of willing partners. There hasn’t been a Black/Brown producer on Variety’s “10 Producers to Watch” list since 2017. We don’t mean to point the finger solely at Variety, because similar lists are printed in various trades. In addition, they all seek recommendations from agencies, management companies, and elite publicists. So this incredibly valuable publicity is often limited to advancing the careers of those who need publicity the least. Empower those that need it the most.

3. Expand Your Vision

Think outside the box when looking for new talent. There are numerous diversity schemes out there, which is a good start and we support them all. But we need more sustained endorsement. Empower those that come through those schemes. Let us look at making sure those graduates stay in the industry and are nurtured and promoted so that they become the decision makers and help create change. Until we are in positions of power nothing will really change.

4. Be More Demanding

Actors, managers and agents must become more demanding about the teams behind the camera. If there are no Black producers, no Brown DOPs, no diverse department heads, you must speak up and challenge. To agents, be proactive in asking on behalf of your clients. Look at your rosters too. Who do you represent? How diverse are they? Without your vocal support, we will continue to be largely shut out of this industry and it is not for lack of excellence. It is for lack of will on the part of producers, network executives and studio heads. It is that simple.

We challenge you to become willing partners in this crucial endeavor. If the full spectrum of our experiences are not produced, marketed and celebrated with some regularity then you are actively denying our humanity and our history. Our stories and experiences can no longer be limited to being backdrops for white narratives and protagonists. Until we are able to show our FULL joy, grief, fear, history, pride and all the other myriad of emotions and experiences, then you are simply upholding the status quo and enabling a society that keeps white people comfortable in their racism and Black and Brown people perpetually dehumanised. Until we are allowed to make mistakes and try again like many of our white counterparts, we will never succeed in the same way.

You are a large part of the problem and it is time to be honest about it. For far too long, the images on our screens have projected lies and partial truth when it comes to our lives and history, minimising our perceived value and creating ripple effects throughout society.

This letter is in defence of all Black and Brown creative artists and the communities they come from. It is in defence of the millions of lives that have gone unrecorded. It is in defence of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Belly Mujinga, Trayvon Martin, Stephen Lawrence, Zahid Mubarek, Mark Duggan, Sarah Reed, the black and brown health professionals who have died from Covid -19, and so many other lives senselessly and tragically cut short.

Your messages in support of Black Lives Matter are a first step. But after decades of enabling racism in your ranks and beyond, it is time to do more. If Black lives really matter to you, our stories must as well. Please help us tell the whole truth. Black and Brown lives all over the world depend on it.

In relevant news, Netflix CEO and his wife Patty Quillin are donating $120 million toward student scholarships at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

According to reports, the couple is giving $40 million to three major Black institutions including the following:

  • The United Negro College Fund
  • Spelman College
  • Morehouse College

The organizations say it is the large individual git in support of student scholarships at HBCUs. It is important to note, Hastings has a long history of supporting educational programs. He launched a $100 million fund in 2016, giving money toward college scholarships for Black and Latino students.

Extras Are Worried COVID-19 Restrictions Will Destroy Their Careers

Background actors are concerned Coronavirus COVID-19 film guidelines could potentially destroy their acting careers.

One of the best ways to get started in the film industry is arguably getting a job as a background actor. The position requires little to no acting experience and gives aspiring actors, filmmakers, and producers the opportunity to see what it is like to work on a production. However, due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 guidelines, movie and TV extras could become a thing of the past replaced with CGI and smaller scenes.

Many guilds including SAG-AFTRA, the Directors Guild, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, and the Cinematographers Guild released rules planned to protect their guild members from infection. However, many of the guidelines suggest guidelines that say to reduce background extras and increase production expenses to hire background actors.

In Los Angeles, the LA County Department of Public Health released guidelines for movies and TV shows saying that the “cast must be as silent as possible to avoid spreading droplets through talking.” Moreover, “Large crowd scenes should be avoided,” which is bad news for background actors who make at around $100 per day.

Sande Alessi is the extras casting director from many hit movies including the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and ‘Argo’. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she says, “Nobody wants what I’m selling,” she says. “Nobody wants human beings.”

Background coordinator Lisa Marie Boiko says it is “physically impossible” to abide by the new social distancing rules.

“How do you do that in a [transportation] van—bring one passenger per trip?” Boiko asks. “I work with groups of 50 background actors or more. The holding areas we use are not very big. Renting out a hangar to spread them out will cost a lot more money.”

In addition, CGI is on track to replace background extras. David Conley, an executive producer at Weta Digital, argues CGI can create “bespoke, realistic characters at any scale and at any level of detail”.

In relevant news, Georgia released its TV and movie production guidelines, which includes eliminating “open calls” and asking for greater distance between actors. Extras and background actors may be “severely reduced”. Staff is asked to keep a record of interactions between actors so the spread of Coronavirus COVID-19 can be tracked.

Meanwhile, Pinewood Atlanta Studios president and CEO Frank Patterson said his 700-acre Fayetteville studio is resuming production. Patterson told “Morning Edition” Pinewood should resume production by this Fall.

‘This Is Us’ Child Actor Reveals His Experiences with Racism in Hollywood

This is Us’ child actor, Lonnie Chavis, opened up about his experiences with racism in Hollywood and life.

Chavis, who plays young Randall, wrote an emotional essay in People Magazine, where he explains the different types of racism, stress, and police intimidation he has witnessed in his short life.

“My life matters, but does it?” he starts his essay. “America paints a very clear picture of how I should view myself. America shows me that my Blackness is a threat, and I am treated as such. I actually didn’t learn about being Black and what that would mean for me until I was 7 years old.”

He explains that his parents taught him what it means to be Black in America with discussions and movie screenings of Spike Lee’s “Malcolm X” and “Amistad”. But he says he experienced what racism is really like in person. As an aspiring actor, he has had more interactions with adults than most children his age. He says the lack of diversity on Hollywood sets made get “treated very poorly by security or entrance checkers” at events, “like I wasn’t supposed to be there until I had a publicist announce me.” He added that he was then often mistaken as the Black actor from “Black-ish” or “Stranger Things.”

“I guess we all look alike since we are all Black,” he continues. “Can you imagine being confused for any other Black kid just because you all share the same profession? I can.”

Chavis says one experience on set left him crying. In one scene he began crying when a racist grandmother’s character was cruel to him. He says he was not instructed to cry on the scene, but he says the scene took an emotional toll on him. “I was crying for me. Can you imagine having to explain to a room full of white people why I couldn’t hold back my real tears while experiencing the pain of racism? I can.”

He also recalls getting racially profiled at a California restaurant and accused of stealing tips. He then recalls the time his mother was pulled over by a police officer and asked, “whose car is this?” He also says he witnessed an officer get physical with his father and put his father’s arm behind his back at his family’s front door. The officer claimed “he was being detained for a traffic ticket” and Chavis says he and his siblings hide inside their home.

“This is what the world looks like for me,” he finishes the essay. “This is my America. Policies need to change, laws need to change, the police need to change, Hollywood needs to change, hearts need to change, America needs to change. Change has got to happen for unarmed Black citizens to not live in fear of being murdered. Can you imagine being me in 2020 and wondering what the future holds? I can’t.”

Now Casting: Kristen Stewart Cast to Play Princess in New Movie

Kristen Stewart will place Princess Diana in an upcoming feature film.

The upcoming drama, which is titled “Spencer”, centers around a weekend in the early 90s when Diana decides to break up with Prince Charles.

Director Pablo Larrain will direct the movie from a script written by Steven Knight and production is set to start in early 2021.

According to Variety, the new movie will center around Princess Diana during one of her final Christmas holiday vacations at the House of Windsor Sandrigham estate. Diana Frances Specer and Prince charles married in 1981. The marriage allegedly had issues and the couple separated in 1992 and the marriage ended in divorce in 1996. She later died in a traffic accident in Paris in 1997.

Stewart is best known for her roles in the “Twilight” franchise. Last year, Stewart starred in “Charlie’s Angeles”. At the time, Elizabeth Banks’ and Kristen Stewart’s reboot of the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ franchise flopped for Sony Pictures. It was the third ‘Charlie’s Angeles’ movie and tanked at the box office. The film made only $8.6 million, well below even the most modest $12 million expectations. The movie was made for approximately $48 million.

It is difficult to say what went wrong with ‘Charlie’s Angels.’ Current reviews show the movie at around 59% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics enjoying Kristen Stewart’s comedic acting abilities. The previous ‘Charlie’s Angels’ movie starring Drew Barrymore made $40 million.

In relevant casting news, Kristen Stewart recently wrapped production on the new movie “Happiest Season”, which filmed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. ‘Happiest Season’ will star Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis. The movie is set for a U.S. release on November 20, 2020, and will be directed by Clea DuVall. The movie is described as the following: “It follows a young woman (Stewart) whose plan to propose to her girlfriend (Davis) while at her family’s annual holiday party is upended when she discovers her partner hasn’t yet come out to her conservative parents.”
