POSITION SUMMARY

CHM is looking for a Social Media Coordinator to manage the Museum’s presence on social media platforms, engage with audiences, promote exhibitions and events, and enhance the Museum’s brand and online reputation. The Social Media Coordinator will help drive our mission of decoding technology through engaging, audience-centric, and on-brand storytelling. A typical day might involve scheduling posts across social channels; scrubbing data to determine whether a particular campaign has been successful; meeting with a curator for background on an artifact to draft an accurate and engaging post; and engaging with audiences on our channels. The Coordinator reports to the Director of Editorial, and their work supports the execution of CHM’s editorial strategy.

This position is exempt. The role is hybrid; the successful candidate will need to be able to work onsite a few days per week.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Content creation: Generate creative and engaging content, including text, images, videos, and graphics, in line with the editorial strategy, calendar, and organizational goals. Stay current on events and opportunities from other departments that have the potential to be featured on the Museum’s owned channels. Write occasional short-form pieces, including blog posts, newsletters, annual report stories, and other marketing communications.
  • Platform management: Manage the Museum’s presence on various social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and TikTok, tailoring content to suit the platform’s audience and format.
  • Project management: Plan and oversee the production of assets, whether in-house or through contractors. Ensure needed approvals are secured and projects meet all deadlines.
  • Community cultivation: Inspire, encourage, and monitor discussions within the Museum’s online community. Nurture existing community on platforms like Facebook and seek new opportunities to engage audiences interested in computer history and technology (e.g., Discord, Reddit, TikTok) in alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Trend identification: Stay up to date with current social media trends and best practices and adapt strategies and content accordingly. Advise others on the team on how they can adapt their work in alignment with trends.
  • Analytics and reporting: Monitor social media metrics and use analytics tools to track the performance of posts and campaigns. Evaluate the effectiveness of strategies against institutional goals and use this information to refine the Museum’s approach and tailor content to audience preferences.
  • Visual branding: Ensure the Museum’s visual branding, including logo usage, color schemes, and design elements, are consistently applied across social media platforms.
  • Research and content analysis: Conduct thorough research into CHM’s collections and expertise to uncover relevant content and convey it in engaging ways.
  • Content scheduling: Plan and schedule content using social media management tools, ensuring a consistent posting schedule and maintaining a steady online presence.
  • Other duties: Provide support for other Marketing, Communications and PR functions as needed (estimated to be approximately 30% of the Coordinator’s time).

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • 2-3 years’ experience creating and posting content and managing a brand presence on social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok, required. Additional experience in communications, marketing, or writing preferred.
  • Experience in the cultural/museum or educational sector is preferred.
  • Interest in and enthusiasm for CHM’s mission.
  • Positive, can-do attitude, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines at once.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a flair for engaging storytelling and the ability to adapt the brand’s voice to different channels.
  • Exceptional commitment to accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills; ability to plan for and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with team members and across Museum departments.
  • Experience in MS Office 365, particularly Word, SharePoint, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to learn and become proficient in CRM and marketing automation systems (Salesforce, HubSpot) for scheduling, data entry, reporting and analysis.
  • Basic image editing skills. Graphic design, photography, or advanced image editing experience is a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, English, or related field is required.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Director of Editorial is responsible for the planning, development, and delivery of an engaging, data-driven editorial content strategy for collections and exhibitions, programs, marketing, and development on all CHM channels – earned, owned, and paid. This person is responsible for ensuring the quality of the editorial team’s deliverables. They will manage a small team and work across the organization to drive our mission of decoding technology through engaging, audience-centric, and on-brand storytelling.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under the direction of the Chief Marketing and Business Officer, define, develop, and implement a sound editorial plan for the Museum’s owned, earned, and paid channels to fulfill our mission to decode technology for everyone while broadening and deepening our audience and network of support.
  • Supervise the development and publishing of editorial projects from concept through execution, from all corners of CHM. On any given day, this may involve a wide variety of tasks, such as leading a cross-functional editorial planning meeting; brainstorming new story formats; drafting social media posts; organizing the editorial calendar; providing feedback on video stories; editing a blog post; and consulting with a curator to ensure the accuracy of a story.
  • Supervise and motivate a small team and collaborate effectively with others across the organization, including curators and archivists, editors, programming managers, educators, contractors and agencies, and senior leaders to publish a wide range of work they help develop.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Director of Marketing and Business Operations, deeply understand the impact of the Museum’s editorial strategies, activities, and processes on its goals and objectives. Use this information to drive a cycle of continuous improvement in editorial content throughout CHM.
  • Manage CHM’s Content and Editorial Guidelines and Editorial Style Guide and serve as the gatekeeper to ensure all published content aligns with these guidelines; meets standards for quality; and is optimized for search and user experience.
  • Serve as an advocate for CHM’s audience, ensuring everyone in the organization understands their needs and driving strategies that help us grow their ranks and deepen our impact.
  • Oversee projects that support Marketing and Development needs, such as campaigns to drive attendance at events; reports to donors; the development of impact stories; and the annual report.
  • Explore and build editorial partnerships that broaden CHM’s reach and impact.
  • Build, implement, and manage the organization’s social media goals and strategy.
  • Support the infusion of high standards for inclusion, diversity, equity, and access into the content CHM produces.
  • Stay current with industry terminology, best practices, and new technologies. Bring new strategies, systems, and processes to the table that help build our audience and reach.

REQUIRED BACKGROUND, EXPERIENCE, AND EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in communications or editorial field
  • At least 5 years’ experience managing editorial strategy and people
  • Experience in any of the following areas is preferred: brand or traditional journalism; academic communications; brand strategy; brand communications; campaign planning and analysis
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, with proficiency in English grammar, writing and style guidelines and the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Deep commitment to accuracy and attention to detail
  • A background in the intersection of technology or computer science with the economy and society and an understanding of CHM’s areas of expertise
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to meet deadlines and long-term goals while juggling multiple competing priorities

ROLE OF SENIOR PRODUCER OF EVENTS

Now is an exciting time to join the programming team in this new role to expand the scope and scale of the Museum’s reach and impact. CHM is seeking a creative, collaborative, productive, and passionate Senior Producer of Events to play a key role to design, develop, and execute on high-profile programming and related strategic museum programs. Working closely with the VP of Innovation & Programming and the programming team, the Senior Producer and Manager will lead a portfolio of programming and related programs focused on thought leaders and influencers, including leaders from technology, business, academia, government, and media.

The Senior Producer of Events will be responsible for the full lifecycle of their programming portfolio, spanning ideation, research and development, planning, speaker and affiliate and participant invitations and management, partnership development and stewardship, event production, companion content development and distribution, evaluation, and reporting. The Senior Producer will collaborate with stakeholders and manage cross-functional teams to drive day-to-day activities through the entire program life cycle, so that programs deliver excellent targeted results and advance on time and in budget.

The Senior Producer will lead a portfolio of programming that involves new initiatives as well as priority events on the 2022 roadmap, such as:

  • Award Ceremonies for CHM’s annual Fellow Awards to honor computing pioneers and the McGovern Tech for Humanity Prize to honor tech for good changemakers
  • Thought Leadership forums, roundtables, briefings on topics such as tech, (mis)information and the future of news; the promise and perils of AI; and post-pandemic innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • Symposium for CHM and other cultural institutions on challenges, opportunities and best practices for inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA)

Event formats will range from marquee award ceremonies to briefings, roundtables, panel discussions, interactive workshops, and conferences. Events will be offered onsite at CHM in Silicon Valley, offsite in other locations, as well as through virtual and hybrid formats.

While events are a major focus, program elements span the museum’s core activities, including collections, exhibitions, events, education, research, publications, and content. Additional related workstreams will range from nomination/application, selection, and announcements for the Prize programs to the selection and management of affiliates plus research and companion content development for thought leadership forums.

Partners and affiliates will include tech executives, scholars, journalists and media producers, philanthropists, government leaders, and others. Collaboration within the programming team and across the organization as well as with a diverse array of stakeholders, partners, and participants is key to success and impact.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support overall programming initiatives that advance CHM’s mission, strategy, brand, and financial sustainability as a physical museum, creator of content and experiences, and forum for thought leadership
  • Create and execute programming tailored to engage, delight, inform, and impact local and global target audiences with a focus on leaders from technology, business, academia, government, and media
  • Build audiences—both repeat and new–that develop into Museum community members, affiliates, partners, sponsors, and donors
  • Craft programming concepts and requirements with executive team members; develop briefs, target outcomes, detailed implementation plans, project documentation, budgets
  • Execute an array of on-site, off-site, in-person, digital, and hybrid programming, e.g. briefings, conferences, roundtables, award ceremonies for 10-1,000+ people.
  • Work to secure high-profile speakers and participants and manage communications throughout engagement.
  • Manage event operations with colleagues, partners, and vendors, from guest lists to production, set up and take down.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and team members across the Museum, such as in marketing, media, curatorial, content, collections, exhibits, fundraising, operations, and finance—to develop and execute on programming roadmaps and work streams
  • Facilitate, host, and lead meetings; represent programming in meetings within and outside the organization
  • Serve as point of contact for assigned portfolio of programs. Act as a consultant to executive leadership for decisions
  • Manage project schedules and communication. Drive progress/status updates and deliverables with cross-function team members. Identify risks, escalate issues as necessary, and solve problems
  • Develop, negotiate, monitor agreements with talent, vendors, contractors
  • Build and manage an affiliates program and an expanding circle of partners
  • Work with marketing team to shape promotion and messaging strategy, draft event and initiative descriptions, create promotion assets or other audience-facing materials
  • Contribute to development, collection, and analysis of quantitative and qualitative metrics. Track metrics, monitor potential gaps, propose actions as needed, and report on key metrics in partnership with programming and business analytics team.
  • Work with the Vice President of Innovation & Programming, fundraising team, and others to develop and steward relationships with partners and donors, including through proposals, presentations, and reports
  • Work on programming administration, such as with finance team for tracking budget, resources, and revenue
  • Stay up to date on programming best practices and trends; work with VP of Innovation & Programming and others to develop and test prototypes to inform ongoing innovation

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • BA or BS degree in related field; graduate degree preferred
  • Ideal candidate will have a minimum of 7 years of experience in developing and producing complex events and programs for leaders in technology, business, academia, government, or media. Exceptional candidates with other experience will be considered.
  • Domain knowledge or strong interest in history and contemporary issues of technology, economy, and society
  • Knowledge and experience with developing and executing in-person, virtual and hybrid events, including experience design
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills; excellent presentation skills
  • Results-oriented with strong track record for delivering target outcomes on-time and within budget with a high degree of excellence and efficiency
  • Demonstrated skills for collaboration, teamwork, problem-solving and an ability to work with a variety of stakeholders and cross-functional team members
  • Ability to effectively represent organization and build relationships with external stakeholders, partners, and funders, including with leaders in technology, business, universities, media, government, and other non-profits

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Periodically travel to programming or partner off-site locations in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond, as required by position responsibilities
  • Museum environment involves both indoor and outdoor working conditions
  • Constantly sitting and performing desk-based computer tasks
  • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds
