How a Regular Guy Quit His 9 to 5 to Become a Fashion Model Icon

0

Model Jeroen Teerlinck quit his high paying job selling advertising to become one of the most popular models in the fashion industry.

No matter how beautiful a model may be, a long career in the modeling industry is never a guarantee. But, for many, the dream of becoming a model outweighs the typical 9 to 5 most Americans face on a day to day basis.

In a recent interview with model Jeroen Teerlinck with Style.com, illustrates just that. Jeroen quit his high paying job as an advertising sales agency to work as a professional working model with major fashion labels such as Tom Ford and Gucci. Jeroen argues that even though selling advertising he was good at his job, he points out that the job wasn’t making him happy. So, he quit his job and tried modeling.

His first interview was for Prada and despite all the other talented and good looking men in the casting office, he landed the job.

From Style.com:

“All the other guys who were sitting there at the casting were new faces just picked up from the street—I was so nervous,” Teerlinck admits. “I walked for Olivier, and he looks at me and says, ‘You’ve done shows before, haven’t you?’ I thought that was it and that I would have to just go home, but he told me that I looked great and he liked my walk. A few days later I got the call, and I was confirmed for the show.”

This would boost his career. Jeroen would model for Diesel, Tom Ford, Vogue Hommes International, and Theory. He would become one of the most recognized modedls during New York Fashion Week.  “Everything that is happening right now is incredible, from my work, my personal life, being able to travel again. I’ve been writing it all down—maybe one day I’ll have enough for an autobiography!”

The True Story of a Homeless Working Actor and Model

0

Mark Reay is the true definition of a starving actor. Mark is a homeless working actor and model in NYC.

Some people believe that working as a male model is amazing, filled with parties, free clothes and luxurious apartments.

But for Mark Reay, a 56-year old model and actor, originally from New Jersey, it wasn’t all that amazing. Although the actor worked in New York City and regularly attended all the fashion shows during Fashion Week, he was still homeless.

For six years, he told the NY Post that he was unable to afford New York City’s rent prices and began sneaking onto a friend’s roof to sleep.

You would probably never guess that Mark was homeless if you met him. In fact, only his closest friend knew the truth during his years he lived on the streets.homeless 3

At 6’3 Mark made sure to keep up appearances. He had a long carer as a model by the time he ended up sleeping on his friend’s roof. Starting in his 20’s he lived in models’ group apartments in places like Madrid, Paris and Milan. The model would walk runways for major designers including Versace and Missoni.

But, even back then the model only made about $10,000 a year, and bringing home small checks like the $60 paycheck he picked up for appearing in French Vogue – but he said that the salary was just enough to support himself and travel whenever he wanted.

homeless model 1

“I was never the type to settle down or save for a deposit for a mortgage,” he said, add that he preferred to be on the go and travel the world.

During that period of time, he worked a lot of odd jobs in addition to modeling, including catering and acting in the first season of Sex and the City.

The money he made paid his $175 single room apartment in New York, which he gave up when he was offered $30,000 to move out as the area was “gentrified.” He used the extra cash to travel the world and learn how to become a professional photographer.

‘That’s the sort of guy I was – no strings attached,’ he said. ‘I never had a serious relationship with a woman or told anyone that I loved them other than my family.’

Mark’s first experience in the streets occurred when he lived in France. He had been planning on taking pictures of people there, but he couldn’t find a way to pay for a hotel. So, instead, he would sleep on the streets. But, Mark pointed out that being homeless in New York was a bit different.

When he returned home, he couldn’t afford the high rent in New York City, so in 2008 he paid $30 a night to stay in a hostel. But, that didn’t last long due to the large number of bedbugs at the hostel. He would later sneak into his friend’s apartment and sleep on the rooftop.

homeless model 2

He would sleep at night with a tarp pulled on top of him and a plastic bottle to urinate into.

Mark revealed that growing up he never thought he would be homeless and sleeping on a roof top. “Amazingly, I got away with it without ever having to tell my friend what I was doing. I was careful not to run into him on the stairs, or any of the other residents for that matter.”

Through that time, Mark would continue to work. He would take photographs at Fashion Week, land roles in ‘The Good Wife’ and ‘Men and Black 3’ while also working on Martin Scorese’s 2010 ad for the cologne Bleu de Chanel.

In order to get ready for modeling and acting gigs, Mark would find public bathrooms where he would get dressed, shave and brush his teeth. He even had a mirror that he would duct-tape to a wall to check out how he looked.

When things were going well, he would invest in a $90/month membership to the YMCA where he could shower, work out, and keep his clothes in a locker. He would also invest in a cell phone in order to land upcoming gigs.

To many people living on the street would seem disgusting and horrible. But, Mark never hated it. He argues that he had an amazing view, cheap rent, and the opportunity to do whatever he wanted.

He’s currently living with his mother in New Jersey after filming a documentary about his life. He splits his time auditioning, taking photographs and couch surfing in New York City.

How a Bad Interview Made Cara Delevingne an A-List Celebrity

0

Cara Delevingne is now Hollywood’s go-to actress after a horrible interview that went viral.

Many actors have to bust their behinds and work for years in crappy filming locations, working with noisy background extras, and fighting over nasty crafty. But, Cara Delevingne became an A-list actress in a single horrible interview.

Hollywood loves opinionated and goofy young actresses. Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most adored actors for her off the cuff remarks and silly interviews.

But, after a viral interview, Cara Delevingne is Hollywood’s next big actress. In 2011, Cara Delevingne was a working model doing photoshoots for Burberry and other major fashion shows.

Cara Delevingne 2
FashionStock.com / Shutterstock.com

Since, then she ventured into acting by working on the new movie ‘Paper Towns.’ During a particular interview promoting her new movie, she quickly became a viral sensation.

Here is what Medium writer John Green had to say about Cara Delevingne response:

“TV people want some part of you, and in exchange for it, they will put the name of your movie on TV. But in that process, you do lose something of yourself.”

“Cara, however, refuses to stick to the script. She refuses to indulge lazy questions and refuses to turn herself into an automaton to get through long days of junketry. I don’t find that behavior entitled or haughty. I find it admirable. Cara Delevingne doesn’t exist to feed your narrative or your news feed?—?and that’s precisely why she’s so f?-?-?king interesting.”

And with that Cara Delevingne is Hollywood’s next leading actress. Look out, Jennifer Lawrence you have some new competition in town.

Why BET Canceled BET’s ‘The Game’

0

BET’s ‘The Game’ is going to air their series finale on Wednesday at 10 p.m. this week on BET canceling the series after airing on and off for several years.

BET’s ‘The Game’, a spinoff of ‘Girlfriends’ was created by Mara Brock Akil and first aired in 2006, the show as the only new comedy series for The CW primetime network. After only three seasons, the series was canceled by TheCW in May 2009. BET would later strike a deal with ‘The Game’s parent company CBS to develop new episodes of the series relocating filming of the show from Los Angeles to Atlanta, Georgia.

When ‘The Game’ finally re-aired two years later, it was the most watched show in BET history with 7.7 million viewers. However, after the eigth season BET executives have decided to pull the plug. But, it begs the question – why did BET cancel ‘The Game’ a show they fought so hard to bring back?

Unfortunately, BET’s ‘The Game’ was struggling to find veiwers after the 4th season. According to reports, in the key demographic (18-49) Season 4 of ‘The Game’ had a rating of 2.2 but, by the seventh season that number would nearly be cut in half to only 1.2 losing well over 3 million viewers.

BET The Game

In addition, BET’s ‘The Game’ suffered many controversies including a major lawsuit where Mara Brock Akil allegedly stole the idea of the show from a writer.

A Mill Valley native who a filed a $40 million copyright infringement suit against two national television networks has settled the case out of court.

“I was very pleased with the settlement,” said screenwriter Staci Robinson, who declined to discuss the terms because of a non-disclosure agreement.

Robinson, a 1986 Tamalpais High graduate, sued CBS, the CW Network, Warner Brothers and the Grammnet Productions studio last year in federal court in Los Angeles. Robinson claimed that a CW screenwriter and producer, Mara Brock Akil, stole her novel and turned it into the TV show “The Game.”

Robinson said her novel, “Interceptions,” is based on her experiences as the girlfriend of a professional football player in the 1990s. The book describes a would-be law student who trades her career goals for the glamorous, but cutthroat, world of NFL players and their hangers-on. [Source]

As the curtains draw to a close this Wednesday on BET’s ‘The Game,’ we will have to wait and see if Malik (Hosea Chanchez) find love? Will Keira (Laura London) seperate herself from the playboy quarterback? Or, will Dr. Melanie Barnett-Davis, M.D. and Pooch Hall finally get their revenge?

[WATCH] The Banned Donald Trump Documentary That Donald Trump Doesn’t Want You to See

0

Watch the new “Trump: What’s the Deal” documentary that Donald Trump banned and reportedly doesn’t want you to see.

Twenty-five years ago, Donald Trump stopped the release of a documentary about his business practices and his so-called “skeletons in his closet.” Leonard Stern’s ‘Donald Trump: What’s The Deal? was the “first of a series on [the] celebrity businessmen,” the film’s website reads, but “Donald threatened to sue any broadcaster or distributor that took on the film.”

According to the Huffington Post, Trump was “working with the mob in Atlantic City, intimidating tenants, hiring illegal immigrant labor, verbally assaulting his family and underlings, and trying to move a Florida airport because jets flew directly over his home.”

But, the biggest claim in the documentary is that he’s not as rich as he says he is.

Well, in the past 25 years society has changed a lot and thanks to the Internet, you can watch the full documentary here.

Why Casting Directors are Choosing Foreign Actors Over Americans

0

Hollywood is no longer interested in American actors and talent any more. According to a new report, top Hollywood agencies are looking at foreign talent before U.S. born actors and actresses.

According to Variety, foreign talent in Hollywood movies and TV shows have hit a record high, which is forcing talent agencies to look outside of the United States for actors.

From Variety:

“The world of acting has gotten much smaller,” says UTA’s Theresa Peters. “When a film gets made, whatever the language, casting agents are able to cast the net wider” because of Skype and
digital auditions.

Michael Douglas recently pointed out that British and Australians are taking over Hollywood and he’s not lying. A large majority of popular feature films are being starred by foreign actors. For example, Ava DuVernay’s Best Picture nominee about the 1965 American civil-rights movement, was portrayed not by an African American actor but, by British actor, David Oyelowo. In addition, the supporting cast members were all British actors including Carmen Ejogo, Tom Wilkinson, and Tim Roth.

But, ‘Selma‘ is not the only movie to feature a large majority of British actors. ’12 Years a Slave’, a movie about 19th-century free black man tricked and trafficked into Southern slavery starred several British actors, including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Cumberbatch, and German-born, Irish-raised Michael Fassbender. In fact, the upcoming ‘Steve Jobs‘ biopic will star Michael Fassbender as Steve Jobs.

So, it begs the question- why are so many casting directors and talent agencies choosing foreign actors over American actors? Well, the rise of video auditions have allowed for anyone in the world to audition for a role. Also, a large majority of Hollywood producers are not American.

The trend is partly due to actors and directors wanting to work as much as possible in the United States, Europe and Asia. But the economics of Hollywood studios, which are more and more driven by expensive blockbusters, also factors into the equation, having opened the door for mid-budget English-language movies — made by European producers, with a mixed cast of U.S. and European actors.

In addition, European actors are trained differently than American actors.

From EW:

For decades, there were two major schools of thought when it came to acting: the Classical, which was best epitomized by Laurence Olivier, and the Method, which revolutionized the art form in America once James Dean and Marlon Brando brought it to the big screen. Classical was more of an outside-in approach, which emphasized a more presentational style associated with the stage. Method, rooted in Constantin Stanislavski’s theories, was more naturalistic, more inside-out. “For many years, there was a schism,” says James Lipton, a pupil of Stella Adler’s teachings and the longtime host of Inside the Actors Studio. “The British stressed training in voice and posture and the physical attributes, whereas the American training is deep rooted in the actor’s emotions.”

As video auditions gain in popularity and foreign entrepreneurs become increasingly interested in the movie business, it may become harder and harder for American actors to land leading roles in feature films and TV shows. It may be an actor’s best interest to move to London for training as well as the foreign mailing address.

Netherlands New Tax Incentive May Boost Europe’s Film Industry

0

Netherlands is actively working on taking over the film industry.

We recently reported that the country Georgia has increased their tax incentives to 20% now, according to Variety, the Netherlands are offering a 30% grant to all TV shows and movies filming in the country.

From Variety:

Aside from inimitable locations, good infrastructure and experienced English-speaking crews, the Netherlands offers filmmakers a generous 30% grant — a production incentive launched in May 2014. The rebate aims to reinforce the competitive position of the Dutch film industry.

For productions looking outside of the United States, this is a great opportunity but, it does put pressure on Georgia’s ever growing film industry.

However, Netherland’s film grant puts a limit on their spending while Georgia does not.

From Variety.com

Do you think Netherland’s film tax incentive will destroy Georgia’s growing film industry?

Recently, on reddit user IRicePie broke down the recent numbers for romantic comedies and things don’t look that good.

Here’s a list of the most successful romantic comedies in the last 30 years.

The romantic comedies that finished in the top 10 for their year are:

  • Coming To America (3rd in 1988)
  • Arthur (4th in 1981)
  • Moonstruck (5th in 1987)

  • My Big Fat Greek Wedding (5th in 2002)

2010-Present

  • None (Silver Linings Playbook at 23rd place for 2012 is the closest)

Romantic Comedy Stats Romantic Comedy Movie Stats

To this day many critics argue that the most successful movies are romantic comedies.

At the end of the day, romantic comedies have gone very formulaic over the past twenty years. It’s always the same movie right down to the ending where the deeply flawed man who makes a mistake has to win over the girl at the end. Which probably explains why ‘Trainwreck‘ wasn’t a major hit in the movie theaters but, the only difference is that the female is the flawed person.

Other movie genres are constantly evolving and as movie theater attendance rates drop, producers will have to either stop making romantic comedies or get original because people are not interested in rom-coms.
