Details surrounding the bear attack scene in The Revenant have been scarce. In fact, in a Q&A with the movie’s director, Alejandro Inarritu said he didn’t want to spoil the movie magic and refrained from answering the question.
But, luckily for us, we were able to find out how The Revenant made that iconic bear fight scene.
Not surprisingly, the scene didn’t actually involve a real bear. But it did require a lot of CGI, of course, and a man pretending to be a bear. In fact, one of the movie’s stuntmen, Glenn Ennis, told Global News, “There was no bear ever on set. The closest a bear ever got to set was at the Calgary Zoo.”
Explaining the details of the scene, Ennis says, “In rehearsals, I would wear a blue suit with a bear head. Obviously that [suit] doesn’t make it into the film, and the CGI guys paint the bear in.”
“In rehearsals, I would wear a blue suit with a bear head. Obviously that [suit] doesn’t make it into the film, and the CGI guys paint the bear in.”
The stuntman prepared endlessly for the scene, Ennis said he watched bear videos to prepare for the scene and says director Alejandro Iñárritu was big on making sure the movements matched those of a real bear. “It was essential that it had the same nuances that a bear would have. Even though it was a big Smurf bear, it still had to be as authentic as possible.”
As with any movie stunt scene, the attack was much like a choregraphed dance. However, DiCaprio, who’s nominated for Best Actor in this year’s Academy Awards, was not involved in a majority of the filming.
“It was his stunt double who rehearsed most of the time, but he stepped in and rehearsed a bit because there were so many parts to this big sequence that had to be learned,” says Ennis. “You couldn’t chew it in pieces, it had to be shot all at once. Leo was around somewhat, but a lot of my work was with the stunt double until we started shooting.” Interesting.
“You couldn’t chew it in pieces, it had to be shot all at once. Leo was around somewhat, but a lot of my work was with the stunt double until we started shooting.”
That being said, there was one part of the attack that required the stunt double’s face to land squarely into Leonardo DiCaprio’s private parts, according to Ennis. I was supposed to grab his jacket with my hand to make it look like the bear’s jaws were pulling it. In order to have the bear’s jaw in the small of his back, basically my face was in his butt,” says Ennis. “My face was in Leo’s butt for a fair bit of time. I can see how that’s someone’s fantasy, but it wasn’t mine!”
“My face was in Leo’s butt for a fair bit of time. I can see how that’s someone’s fantasy, but it wasn’t mine!”
The attack left Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in pretty bad condition. It would take make up artists four and a half hours to apply make up on set.

The Academy Awards rewards actresses that play prostitutes or strippers in movies.
They say that sex sells, but this adds a whole new dimension to the old adage.
According to the website OscarHookers.com, every recipient of the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress Academy Awards have, at one point in their careers, played a character whose life is directly related to the sex industry.
In fact, in a Wall Street Journal piece titled “Stripping Your Way to Success“, reporters describe how woman are only awarded for an Oscar after playing a stripper or a prostitute. For example, the following actresses played a stripper or a prostitute in the past: Natalie Portman, Charlize Theron, Mira Sorvino, Elisabeth Shue, Julia Roberts, Jodie Foster, Greta Garbo, Nicole Kidman, Elizabeth Taylor, Kim Basinger, Jane Fonda. In addition, the very first actress to win an Oscar was Janet Gaynor, who played a hooker in 1928’s Street Angel.
But, it begs the question: Why do acresses take these roles, and why does Hollywood reward them? “There aren’t and have never been a lot of great roles for women in Hollywood,” says Patty Jenkins, who directed Charlize Theron in Monster. “Sadly, that creates this cliché that if a woman plays a prostitute, she wins an Oscar.”
Jeanine Basinger, the leader of Wesleyan’s Film Studies department, has a different perspective. “The way to land an Oscar as a woman is either to take off your makeup or put on a lot more. You’re either a prostitute/stripper or you’re a mother/nun.”
But some Hollywood actresses embrace the roles. Marisa Tomei was nominated for Best Actress in the movie The Wrestler says she embraced her role as a stripper. “My aim in the film was to honor the women I met and to represent them in a meaningful way. I wish there was a movie called The Stripper because I found out so much about these women, like the physical toll that dancing takes on a stripper’s body, and on her feet, that we couldn’t fit into the movie.”
It’s clearly understandable that strippers and prostitutes often have storylines that are more complex and more interesting than roles like “ugly girlfriend” or “faithful wife.”

Matt Damon says the film industry has “a long, long, long way to go” when it comes to increasing diversity.
Hollywood must do “much, much, much more” to reflect the audiences who actually spend money at the movie theaters, the best actor nominee told reporters on Saturday.
“We’re talking about huge systemic injustices around race and gender that are a lot bigger than the Oscars,” Damon said. “They’re massive issues in our industry and in our country.”
Diversity has dominated the conversation surrounding the Oscars since last week’s nominations revealed a second consecutive year of all-white acting nominees. On Friday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced major changes that including increasing female and minority members by 2020.
Matt Damon said the movie is “a wonderful first step.”
“But that’s what it is,” he said. “A first step.”
But, Matt Damon is no stranger to controversy. In September, Damon apologized for comments he made regarding diversity in filmmaking that sparked worldwide backlash against the Martian actor.
In an episode of HBO’s Project Greenlight, Damon was shutting down producer Effie Brown who made the case that a script dealing with sensitive subjects like prostitution should have a diverse directing team behind it. Matt Damon responded by saying diversity should be handled in “the casting of the film, not in the casting of the show.” Damon said the statement was taken out of context.

An Oscars producer said host Chris Rock has finished his opening monologue for the awards show a week ago, but now he’s back at the drawing board and is re-writing it after the controversy surrounding this year’s show.
Many stars have spoken out about the lack of diversity in Oscar nominees for the second year in a row, bashing the Academy for their lack of diversity. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith said they would not attend this year’s show, as did Spike Lee.
“Chris is hard at work. He and his writing staff locked themselves in a room. As things got a little provocative and exciting, he said, ‘I’m throwing out the show I wrote and writing a new show.’
‘I’m throwing out the show I wrote and writing a new show.’
“Chris is that thorough,” Hudlin continued. “He’s that brilliant, and I have 1000 percent confidence that he will deliver something that people will be talking about for weeks.”
Hudlin said that Chris Rock, won’t shy away from the controversy during the 88th Academy Awards, set to take place February 28th.
“You should expect [Oscars diversity jokes],” Hudlin revealed. “And, yes, the Academy is ready for him to do that. They’re excited about him doing that. They know that’s what we need. They know that’s what the public wants, and we deliver what the people want.”
Rock has already cracked a joke about the Oscars’ diversity issue. He tweeted earlier this month, “The #Oscars. The White BET Awards.”
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences responded to the backlash on Friday, announcing a major overhaul of its membership policy.
The organization’s board voted unanimously to make the voting “significantly” diverse, with the goal to double the number of women and diverse members by 2020.
Do you think Chris Rock will do a good job? Share with us your thoughts in the comments below!
The Academy’s new voting rules has pissed off several members.
Following the #OscarsSoWhite backlash due to the lack of diversity amongst this year’s Oscar nominations, The Academy has announced several new rules and regulations about voting rights. However, many people are not too happy about the new rules.
Jaguar PS / Shutterstock.com
Under the new rules, members hwo have not worked across the span of thirty years after gaining membership will lose the right to cast Oscar ballots unless they’ve been nominated for an Oscar themselves.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, people are upset about the new voting rules. “As a member who has stepped partially away from the industry, it feels like someone like me is being victimized. I’m in the mentoring phase of my life — I teach — so I’m now supposed to not be relevant, even though I’m being as relevant, in working with young artists, as people who have current credits are. And, by the way, I’ve contributed a lot of time to the Academy as a judge for the Nicholl Fellowships and the Student Academy Awards. So basically they’re saying that I don’t matter anymore. It seems like this is a hastily put-together reaction to a firestorm.”
DFree / Shutterstock.com
Another Academy Award member says the announcement is “bullshit”. Tab Hunter, 84, a member of the actors branch had this to say: “Obviously, it’s a thinly-veiled ploy to kick out older white contributors — the backbone of the industry — to make way for younger, ‘politically-correct’ voters. The Academy should not cave in to media hype and change the rules without talking to or getting votes from all members first.”
“Obviously, it’s a thinly-veiled ploy to kick out older white contributors — the backbone of the industry — to make way for younger, ‘politically-correct’ voters.”
Some people are praising the new new changes including Ava DuVernay, the director of Selma. “One good step in a long, complicated journey for people of color + women artists. Shame is a helluva motivator. We’ve all felt shame even when we didn’t believe we were wrong. It’s the fact that EVERYONE ELSE thinks you’re wrong. Fix it mode kicks in. Marginalized artists have advocated for Academy change for DECADES. Actual campaigns. Calls voiced FROM THE STAGE. Deaf ears. Closed minds. Whether it’s shame, true feelings, or being dragged kicking + screaming, just get it done. Because the alternative isn’t pretty.”

Michael Caine is just the latest in a long line of actors to weigh in on the diversity issues plaguing the Academy Awards.
In an interview with Nick Robinson for BBC Radio 4, Caine was asked about “the argument going on in Hollywood at the moment, that not enough black actors – in fact, none – have been nominated for this year’s Oscars.”
“Yeah, but there’s loads of black actors,” Caine responded. “You can’t vote for an actor because he’s black. You can’t just say, ‘I’m going to vote for him. He’s not very good, but he’s black. I’ll vote for him.’ You have to give a good performance.”
Michael Caine also added that he was sure there were “very good” performances last year among actors of color, specifically calling out Beasts of No Nation star Idris Elba, who was one of the most surprising Oscar snubs.
“The one I – I don’t know whether Idris got [nominated],” Caine said. “I saw Idris, and I thought he was wonderful. I thought he would get [nominated]. Did he not get nominated?”
The interviewer would later explain that Idris Elba was not nominated and Caine replied, “Well, look at me. I won the [European Film Award] for best actor, and I got nominated for nothing else.”
Caine added: “The great thing about it is you don’t have to go.” When asked about the Academy Award favorite, Caine responded by saying “I love Leonardo, he played my [son-in-law] in a movie, but I don’t want to travel that far,” Caine said. “I’m too old to travel that far to sit in an audience and clap for someone else.”
When asked by the reporter if his message to “non-white actors” is “be patient,” Caine said it was. “Be patient,” he said. “Of course it will come. It took me years to get an Oscar.”

After producing a TV pilot and holding several open casting calls throughout Atlanta, Georgia several months ago, HBO has decided to pull the plug on ‘Brothers in Atlanta’.
The TV series was produced by SNL veteran Lorne Michaels. The series was created by Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin, centered around struggling entertainers and best friends trying to make it in Atlanta, Georgia.
“After assessing our programming needs we talked to Bashir and Diallo and decided moving forward didn’t make sense for us at the time,” HBO said in a statement. “We feel they are immensely talented and we hope to work with them in the future.”

Jaden Smith and Maya Rudolph were both attached to appear in the comedy, which was picked up to series in April. But, the show probably couldn’t compete with HBO’s robust line-up of comedy series including Silicon Valley, Girls, Veep, Togetherness, Ballers and Vice Principles. The network is also adding two new comedy series while letting go of Girls next year.
This is the second show to get canceled after HBO decided to cancel The Brink after having greenly a second season three months ago.

The Academy has just introduced major changes to increase Oscar diversity.
In response to the overwhelming backlash of this year’s Oscars, and as promised by president Cheryl Boone Isaacs following their secret meeting, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has introduced a major overhaul to their membership process.
In a new statement on their website, the Academy outlined the changes they plan to make to ensure that the voting population of the organization, comprised of mostly old filmmakers.
Variety reports that the so-called “emergency board meeting” took place on Thursday night with the leaders of The Academy deciding not to wait until the next scheduled board meeting to make the following changes.
The steps they plan to take are designed to increase the diversity of the Academy members, as well as ensure that those who are inactive in the film industry are no longer allowed to vote.
Here’s a breakdown of the new changes:
Each new member voting status will last 10 years
Every member’s voting rights will only last if the member has been active in motion pictures during that 10 year timespan
Members will receive lifetime voting rights after three ten-year terms, or if they have won or been nominated for an Academy Award
Members do not qualify for active status will be moved to “emeritus status” – Emeritus members do not pay dues but enjoy the “privileges of membership” except voting
This new rules will not start this year.
The Oscars also plan a “global plan to recruit new members and add three new seats to the Board of Governors.
Currently, The Academy board has 51 members, and every single one except two people are white, while only 17 are women. They also plan to add new members to their executive boards and committees as soon as possible.
We will have to wait to see what benefits these decisions will bring. But, it is hard to deny the impact Will Smith, George Clooney and Jada Pinkett Smith’s opinion on The Academy has had the past few days. Additionally, the Twitter hashtag has been a major player in the call for more representation with millions of people everyday voicing their opinion and their frustration with the film industry.
