Georgia is Taking All of Hollywood’s Jobs

0

Majority of all jobs leaving Hollywood are moving to Atlanta, Georgia.

The number union members has increased dramatically over the last few years as more productions are leaving Los Angeles and traveling to other states with better tax incentives.

The film and TV workers union in Georgia has seen their membership increase by 1,100% in the last 11 years, according to Deadline.

The IATSE Studio Mechanics Local 479 in Atlanta is the general union for a wide range of film and television jobs. Jobs ranging from gaffers, electricians, customers, prop makers, and set painters. Currently, the Georgia local union has 2,122 members.

READ MORE: 29 Movies and TV Shows now Filming in Georgia

This translates to a larger number of qualified crew members to work on a production in comparison to other competing states such as Louisiana which only have 1,221 total union crew members.

With major movies such as Anchorman 2, Identity Thief, The Hunger Games, and the 29 other productions now filming, Georgia was able to grow the number of productions by having a large and growing number of crew members to work on productions.

However, a lot of the boost in growth is not only due to tax incentives but also the lower wages a Georgia crew member gets paid for in comparison to their Los Angeles counterpart. Union films shot in LA and New York are covered by IATSE’s basic contract. While, films shot elsewhere are covered by IATSE’s cheaper Area Standards Agreement. But, taking into account the higher cost of living in New York and Los Angeles, the differences in pay could be ignored.

But, at the end of the tax incentives are not the only thing that persuades Hollywood producers to leave Los Angeles. It takes nice weather, qualified crew members, rental facilities, and simply an adequate infrastructure to film a big budget movie.

But, expect Georgia to continue to grow in terms of film productions. As one destination becomes a popular location for filming, you will soon see more producers setting up shop in the Peach State.

“The Walking Dead” Season 5 Crazier and More Exciting than Ever

0

The Walking Dead started filming for season 5 over a week ago and it looks like Season 5 is going to be better than ever.

Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead‘s creator, recently spoke with Entertainment weekly about the new season and he says the new season is going to be “magical”.

“Everyone’s happy to be back together, so it’s been pretty great and everybody’s bringing their A game still, 5 years in. We’re doing new and different and crazy and exciting things and now I think the atmosphere is that we can’t wait until we can start sharing things with people and start showing things to people because we’re really excited about what we’re doing here. We think we’re making another magical season.” [Entertainment Weekly]

Kirkman also points out that there are going to be a ton of cliffhanger episodes and surprises. So much so, that they have increased secrecy on set. “Just because any images that get out of any kind of things that are seen do in a sense spoil that cliffhanger, so we’re trying to keep things a little more tight this time around.”

The Walking Dead‘s creator commented on how Season 4 was somewhat slow as the group was separated and there was a focus on the individual stories of each of the characters. But, he points out that the possibility of cannibals in Terminus, will definitely heighten the suspense for season 5. He argues that what makes The Walking Dead so great is that the show will slow down for periods of time and then out of nowhere things will speed up keeping the audience on guard.

Sarah Jones Family Files Massive Lawsuit for Wrongful Death Against ‘Midnight Rider’

0

Singer Gregg Allman was sued Wednesday along with several movie producers, a railroad company after the tragic death of the camera assistant, Sarah Jones.

The family of Sarah Jones, the camera assistant that was killed during the filming of “Midnight Rider”, has filed a lawsuit against the film’s director, crew members, producers, the distributor  Open Road Films, and the companies that own and manage the railroad tracks and surrounding property.

According to reports, the lawsuit includes charges of negligence and asks for an unspecified damages for Jones’ death and pain and suffering, and punitive damages. The family of Sarah Jones is seeking damages “for the full value of Sarah’s life”.

The lawsuit claims that director Randall Miller and the defendants, including the location manager, Charles Baxter, the first assistant director Hilary Schwartz and cinematographer Mike Ozier all failed to obtain permission for the production on the railroad bridge. Furthermore, they hid the fact that the shooting location was dangerous and that they received permission to film on the railroad.

Essentially, the crew members believed that they had permission to be on the railroad tracks even though that was not the case.

HT_sarah_jones_jtm_140310_16x9_608

There are a total of 18 defendants named in the wrongful death lawsuit including the film’s producer and writer, executive producers, Meddin Studios, CSX railroad, Rayonier, the paper company that owns the land around the tracks.

Recently, Open Road Films, the distribution company for “Midnight Rider” issued a statement about the new lawsuit Wednesday afternoon.

“This event was a horrible tragedy, and our deepest condolences go out to the Jones family, the crew members and others who have suffered. Open Road Films was not involved in the production in any way at any time, and we have been named in this suit without justification.”

According to an employee of Rayonier, the company that owns the land around the tracks, told the production company that only two trains would pass on the tracks per day. However, the tracks “Midnight Rider” filmed on were one of the busiest freight lines in Georgia and receives 10 to 12 trains on a regular day.

According to reports, the production went onto the bridge thinking the tracks would be unused for the rest of the day, The production placed a hospital bed on the railroad tracks for a dream scene. While shooting the scene, an oncoming train blew its whistle. The crew was warned that if they heard a train whistle, they would have a minute to clear. But, the train was heading down the tracks faster than expected and the crew did not have time to clear people from the bridge or the bed from the tracks.

The train struck the bed, sending pieces of metal flying in all directions. Sarah Jones was hit by a peices of metal and knocked into the path of the train. She was struck by the train and killed. Other crew members required hospitalization.

The district attorney has not decided whether or not to file criminal charges in the case. The criminal case is centering on whether or not the production company had permission or thought they had permission to film on the railroad tracks. According to CSX, they refused permission for the production to use its tracks and claimed they have e-mails to prove it. However, the film’s producers are arguing otherwise.

Job Security Sucks for Actors – NBC and CW Network Recast Several Actors

0

If booking a role is not hard enough, it is even tougher for actors to keep their jobs in the long run.

In the newly picked up TV show, NBC‘s “Bad Judge” producers are asked to recast two roles played in the pilot by Mather Zickel (I Love You Man) and Arden Myrin (Mad TV). According to Deadline, the two characters on NBC’s Bad Judge are expected to be reworked on the show. The television series recently added Liz Brizius as the show runner on the television series and stars Kate Walsh as a wild child who knows how to have a good time while also being one of the toughest judges in Los Angeles.

Mather Zickel played Gary in the television series, a psychiatrist who has an on-again, off-again relationship with Rebecca. Myrin played Jenny, Rebbecca’s best friend and listener to all of the crazy gossip and romantic news.

In addition to NBC, the CW drama iZombie will be replacing Alexandra Krosney (Last Man Standing). The CW Network’s iZombie comes from Warner Bros. Television and centers on a supernatural crime drama that centers on a med student turned zombie who takes a job at a coroner’s office and ends up solving homicide cases.

But, these two shows are not the only shows that big networks are recasting, The Odd Couple and NBC’s Mission Control are also recasting roles.

Just as you think that you are set for a recurring role on a television series, you may never know when executives may not like what they see.
