Coronavirus: Nearly 120,000 Film Industry Crew Jobs Lost

0

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, nearly 120,000 below-the-line entertainment industry jobs have been lost.

As Variety reported,  80% of the 150,000 members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. Leaders of the International Cinematographers Guild that has about 9,000 members and works as IATSE Local 600 addressed the loss of jobs report in a message to members as part of its most recent weekly newsletter.

“By the time you have finished reading this weekly, the circumstances we find ourselves in will have already changed,” the message said. “We are writing to tell you what we know at this moment and what we are working on at your local as our industry joins the world in shutting down and workers and their families are left wondering about their futures. The IATSE reports that the pandemic shutdown has resulted in the loss of 120,000 jobs held by its 150,000 members. It is critical that our industry be included in pending federal relief package.”

The message creates an unhopeful outlook for the near future of the film industry.

“Although some of our members are being paid for up to two weeks after their shows shut down, based upon the reality of the health care crisis we now face, it is highly unlikely that productions will resume after so short a period of time,” the message said. “This problem is likely to continue for months, not weeks, and our concerns about health, benefits and economic stability are shared by the entire membership. Your health and safety and the well-being of your families are paramount to us.”

“You have many questions about your benefit hours and the ability of the plans, both active and retiree, to withstand a period of diminished contributions and an uncertain investment environment. It is important to note that both plans currently have months of reserves and are not threatened at this moment.”

The leaders say the next step is to create a plan to help those affected by the Coronavirus outbreak.

“To ensure the safety of our employees and their families, all our regional offices have closed or are minimally staffed,” the leaders said. “Transitioning our entire organization to work remotely is complex and will take some time to work out, but the staff is on it full time. Every action taken serves the goal of reducing transmission, protecting the health care system from collapse and giving medical professionals and researchers the time they need to identify and implement measures that reduce the devastation.”

AMC CEO and President Adam Aron will comply with local, state, and federal mandates to ensure the public health of staff and moviegoers.

“We are ever so disappointed for our moviegoing guests and our employee teams that the new CDC guidelines that Americans should not gather in groups larger than 10 people make it impossible to open our theatres. Still, the health and wellbeing of AMC guests and employees, and of all Americans, takes precedence above all else. We will continue to monitor this situation very closely and look forward to the day we can again delight moviegoers nationwide by reopening AMC movie theatres in accordance with guidance from the CDC and local health authorities.”

Then, play a TV show or movie on Netflix, launch the extension and send the URL to individuals anywhere in the world. ‘Final Destination’ Six is Now In Development and Coming Sooon

Final Destination Six’ is coming soon.

Fans of the horror franchise ‘Final Destination’ will be excited to learn a sixth movie is currently in development. From 2000 to 2011, the franchise released five films, which made $656 million at the box office. Nine years after the last episode, the original creator Jeffrey Reddick and producer Craig Perry have reunited to work on a sequel.

In a recent interview, Reddick said the new movie would not be a reboot.

”I think ‘reboot’ is probably too strong of a word, it makes it sound like they’re going to change everything, but it’s a Final Destination movie,” said the creator. “Craig is the master of coming up with crazy openings and set pieces. He’s told me a couple of things that happen in this one, and it’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s not going feel like cash-grab Final Destination film.”

Details of the potential plot, the duo reveals they have been considering thinking about focusing on first responders as they are continually facing real death situations. “We’re toying with having it take place in the world of first responders: EMTs, firemen, and police,” said Perry. “These people deal with death on the front lines every day and make choices that can cause people to live or die.”

There is no director or official release date yet. But, ‘Saw’ writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan are reportedly working on the movie. Stay tuned for additional news as it becomes available.

As we wait for the new ‘Final Destination’ movie, check out this video essay into the franchise by Ryan Hollinger. Watch the video above.

Amazon is Hiring 100,000 People Due to Coronavirus Outbreak

Amazon to hire 100,000 people amid Coronavirus outbreak.

Amazon said on Monday the company would hire 100,000 warehouse and delivery workers in the United States to handle a surge in online orders, as many Americans have turned to the Internet to fulfill their needs during the coronavirus outbreak.

As shoppers, clear stores out of fears of a quarantine, food shortage, and lack of supplies, retailers are racing to keep food and cleaning items in stock.

“We want those people to know we welcome them on our teams until things return to normal and their past employer is able to bring them back,” Amazon said in a blog post here.

“We want those people to know we welcome them on our teams until things return to normal and their past employer is able to bring them back,” Amazon said in a blog post here.

Amazon said it would add $2 to its minimum $15 per hour to US workers’ wages through April. The extra pay for hourly employees is expected to cost more than $350 million, Amazon said.

It is not clear if delivery operations will be impacted due to government restrictions.  President Donald Trump advised limiting social interactions and gatherings to 10 people or less. The number of municipalities calling for people to engage in social distancing due to the coronavirus pandemic is rising. On Tuesday, health officials have issued an important message for all Americans to limit social interactions to help healthcare systems prevent a rise of patients. As of Tuesday, 87 Americans have died with 4,490 infections, an increase of 1,000 confirmed infections from Sunday.

In related news, Amazon is now hiring people to work from home.

Coronavirus: ‘Saturday Night Live’ to Suspend Production Indefinitely

Saturday Night Live‘ to suspend production indefinitely amid the Coronavirus outbreak.

The latest TV show to go to the hiatus is ‘Saturday Night Live’, all thanks to the Coronavirus. NBC confirmed on Monday the late-night show will suspend production indefinitely. Saturday Night Live was previously scheduled to return from hiatus on March 28th with host John Krasinski and musical guest Dua Lipa.

The decision to shut down production comes after New York City mayor Bill de Blasio ordered all “nightclubs, movie theaters, small theater houses, and concert venues to close by March 17 at 9 a.m.

Before SNL news broke, most of the late-night shows announced plans to continue their tapings without audiences. But, by the end of the weekend, all of them decided to entirely suspend production. As The Hollywood Reporter reports, ‘SNL’ is currently 16 episodes into their 21-episode season and their finale typically airs in May. Considering events scheduled for May have already been canceled, it remains unclear whether ‘SNL’ will return with new episodes this season.

As Movie Theaters Shut Down, Universal Will Release Its Movies on Demand

Amid the Coronavirus outbreak, Universal movies will be available to rent including ‘The Hunt’ and ‘The Invisible Man’.

As Donald Trump announced new guidelines to stem the Coronavirus outbreak, and the shutdown of non-essential businesses roll out across the United States, box office sales are taking a massive hit. Movie theaters are now sitting virtually empty. Until now, movie studios were patient and waiting out to see the impact of the pandemic. But, Universal will be the first entertainment company to break a long-held tradition. Universal will make theatrical releases available for on-demand rental starting this week.

Starting with ‘The Hunt’ and ‘The Invisible Man’, and ‘Trolls World Tour, Universal will offer titles for rent over streaming for $19.999 for 24 hours.

CNN reports:

Universal said in a statement that it made its movies available in the home now rather than because of the “current circumstances,” which have “made it more challenging to view our films.”

“Given the rapidly evolving and unprecedented changes to consumers’ daily lives during this difficult time, the company felt that now was the right time to provide this option in the home as well as in theaters,” the studio said in a statement on Monday. “NBCUniversal will continue to evaluate the environment as conditions evolve and will determine the best distribution strategy in each market when the current unique situation changes.”

Now, many theatrical releases won’t miss out on their favorite films while stuck at home. Some are complaining about the price. But, a trip to the movies for two people could easily exceed $20, and it could quickly increase with each additional family member. But, for a film that costs multi-millions to produce, $20 is a simple contribution to the cast and crew who worked hard to make a production for your entertainment.

CBS, Turner to Pay Technicians and Freelancers Set to Work the NCAA March Madness Tournament (Report)

Despite the Coronavirus hiatus, CBS and Turner will reportedly pay all technicians and freelancers scheduled to work the NCAA tournament.

CBS Sports and Turner sports invested a lot of time and money setting things up for the NCAA March Madness tournament. On Monday, news broke from Sports Video Group the networks would be paying “all technicians and utilities – including freelancers – who were scheduled to work the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Final Four Weekend, and the Division II and Division III National Championship Games.”

International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers director of broadcasting and telecommunications Robert Prunn shared the news and thanked CBS and Turner for their efforts.

“The IBEW extends its sincerest thanks to CBS Sports for this incredible gesture towards our freelance members,” said Prunn. ” We especially would like to recognize the efforts of [CBS Sports Executive Vice President, Operations and Engineering] Patty Power who, from early on, was communicating with us, understood the gravity of the impact on our members, and together with the CBS Sports executive leadership team, worked hard to make this happen.”

While details surrounding the deal have not been released, this is something CBS and Turner did not have to do. As a result, they should be praised for doing something outside of their contract. There has been a lot of attention paid to entertainment companies and how they would be compensating freelancers, crew members, and other staff working on such productions. But, on the collegiate side of sports, the broadcasters scheduled for extensive work over several weeks could easily be overlooked, and CBS/Turner did the right thing but not letting those men and women go unnoticed.
