Box Office Earnings Drop 97% Due to Coronavirus

Hollywood’s movie industry hits its lowest box office in decades.

AMC, Regal, and Cinemark shut down operations on Wednesday. Now, Hollywood reported the lowest box office figures since the film industry started tracking box office numbers decades ago.

North American cinemas took in less than $300,000 for all the movies currently in theaters, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The box office results are down 97% from the comparable date last year and is the lowest daily total in film history.

On the bright side, drive-in theaters saw a major rise in attendance. Since audiences view movies from their cars, it is still possible to watch a movie with a crowd and follow social distancing mandates. That said, there are not many drive-in movie theaters left around the country.

Hollywood studios are delaying all new movies including ‘Mulan’, ‘Fast and Furious 9’, Marvel’s ‘Black Widow’, ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ and the 007 spy-drama ‘No Time To Die’, even drive-ins that do manage to stay open won’t be getting any new films in the near future.

How Hollywood Workers Can Get Financial Aid During the Coronavirus

0

Hollywood shut down is in full effect due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Thousands of entertainment industry workers are left questioning how they will pay their bills; however, the Coronavirus lockdown will last. However, over the past week, the entertainment industry’s unions are working overtime to help workers get financial aid and support during these tough times.

According to TheWrap, guild officials say they do not have enough resources to help all workers in need, and federal assistance is necessary, not only for stimulus checks, but o ensure that entertainment workers qualify for government relief.  Guilds encourage those who suddenly find themselves without any financial resources because of the film industry shutdown to reach to their respective guilds for support, and for those who can afford it to contribute to it in any way they can.

Here is a list of financial aid groups for those affected by the Hollywood shut down.

#PayUpHollywood

Liz Alper is a ‘Chicago Fire’ writer and WGA board member, and alongside Jamarah Hayner and Deirdre Mangan, the activist group was created to organize Hollywood workers to increase pay and safety following the #MeToo movement. Now, the group is raising funds to send out small, short-term stipends to workers in need.

#PayUpHollywood has launched a GuFundMe account, which has raised several hundred thousand. The goal of the organizations is to provide emergency checks from $450 to $900 to Hollywood workers who were working on projects that were either filming or set to go into production when the pandemic hit.

$450 checks will be available to those who qualify and who are currently receiving unemployment checks from the California Employee Development Department (EDD). $900 checks will be available to qualified applicants who cannot get checks from the EDD for different reasons, such as 1099 employee status.  Information on EDD services, including aid to those infected or caring for someone infected with coronavirus can check their website for more information.

Those who wish to apply can fill out the questionnaire here. Aid will be provided based on the order of applications received and the level of need. All applicants will need to provide documentation of work lost, EDD application proof, and other information as listed in the survey. Those who wish to donate to the fund can do so on their GoFundMe page.

Actors Fund

The Actors Fund is providing emergency financial assistance and counseling to all entertainment employees. The group was included as part of a $2.5 million donation to IATSE and is no open to applications for emergency funds based on financial need. You can review the information on their website.

Motion Picture and Television Fund

The Motion Picture and Television Fund announced it would open financial aid and case management services to those affected by the Hollywood shutdown. Those in need can call (323) 634-3888, or check their website for services offered.

“We have been at this place before during the 2007-2008 work stoppage and supported 630 industry members with financial assistance and case management in a challenging time,” wrote President/CEO Bob Beitcher last week. Thanks to the generosity of our community, MPTF is still here for you today.”

Writers Guild of America

For WGA members, WGA West and WGA East are offering legal services to help writers with their contracts and employment rights for any productions that were shut down. The WGA health plan will cover 100 % of coronavirus testing. These and other WGA services are outlined on the guild’s website.

SAG-AFTRA

The SAG-AFTRA Foundation and the SAG-AFTRA Motion Picture Players Welfare Fund (MPPWF), have formed a coronavirus response reserve to provide support to guild members in need of emergency financial aid because of the pandemic.

Directors Guild of America

The DGA will cover all costs for those who need to be tested for coronavirus and will also include remote treatment from doctors and psychologists as part of their health plan during the California lockdown. DGA members can also apply for short-term, interest-free loans through the Directors’ Guild Foundation, which can be found here.

IATSE

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees is increasing its catastrophe withdrawals to include members who need coronavirus financial aid from job declines. The guild is also asking both its members and workers throughout the industry to help them in their drive to urge Congress to make preparations that ensure that Hollywood workers will be able to qualify for any federal relief programs created in the coming weeks. Check their website for more resources for members.

Teamsters Local 399

Drivers that are members of the Teamsters Local 399 who are out of work due to production shutdowns can now apply for jobs at local grocery stores through the union. Local 399 has arranged for preferential employment of members who are in immediate need of a paycheck to take driver jobs at Ralph’s, Albertsons, Vons, and Stater Bros. stores. The union is also allowing members to waive due payments. Information for members is available on the union website.

Movie Audition Tips: How Land More Acting Jobs

Movie audition tips: How to land more acting jobs.

The differences between movie productions can vary. In this guide, we will breakdown the differences between indie productions and major budget feature films. The goal of this acting tutorial is to explain how producers look for actors to work on their respective projects.

In our previous guide, we discussed acting auditions for movies. We previously discussed how to find a talent agent, how to find a manager, where to find acting auditions, and how to start your acting career, in our previous guides.

Movie Audition Tips

Short Films and low-budget movies

Filmmakers work on mini-budget productions generally work with their close friends to produce the project. A casting director working on this is typically doing their work for free or as a favor to the producer. As a result, almost all the actors auditioning for a role in the project, typically have little experience or are looking for a way to expand their acting profile. Traditionally, actors self-submit for roles for the aforementioned projects. Talent agents and managers reject these productions as they do not usually get compensated for getting their talent to work on the project.

Low-Budget SAG-AFTRA Short Films and Feature Films

SAG-AFTRA Feature films and Short Films usually have a budget under $1 million. These projects allow for a casting director to cast relatively known actors for projects that will go straight to streaming services. Typically, one popular actor will be cast for the project with the remaining artists being unknown and aspiring talents.

Major budget SAG-AFTRA Feature Films

For SAG-AFTA feature films budgeted over $1 million, the producers are looking to cast bigger name actors to work on the project. The casting director will follow their traditional casting process by putting a list of roles and seeking submissions by talent agents, managers, and possibly open casting calls for smaller roles. Read our introductory guide to movie auditions to learn more.

For major supporting roles, a casting director is looking for talented actors who have a lot of experience, social media following, and will bring a return on investment on the project. It is harder for aspiring actors to land major roles in such projects as producers are seeking to build marketing around the cast, and do not want to take a risk on actors with little to no experience on major budget feature films.

Smaller roles, including day-player, and supporting roles, directors try to find unknown actors to move the storyline of the movie. A supporting actor’s job is now to be noticeable and grab the actor’s attention. Rather, a supporting actor will move the story along. That said, many actors have had their careers cemented by day player roles. For movies that are shot on location, which has become popular due to film incentives such as Georgia’s film tax credit, regional casting directors cast local actors for supporting roles.

Acting Auditions for Movies Explained

Acting auditions for movies explained – here is everything you need to know.

We previously discussed how to find a talent agent, how to find a manager, where to find acting auditions, and how to start your acting career, in our previous guides. In this acting tutorial, we will breakdown the details of auditions so that you can learn the ins and outs of the casting process.

All aspiring actors have to audition. Before Daniel Radcliffe became the face of the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise, the kid actor was confident in the audition, which helped him land a leading role in the Warner Bros. project.

Acting Auditions for Movies Explained

Step 1:

If a movie producer can get enough money and financing to start filmmaking for their project, one of the next steps is to hire a casting director. A casting director then receives a list of people the producer would like to work with, their budget, and other information to assist the casting director make a casting decision.

It is important to note; many producers find celebrities for their projects early on in the process. Casting celebrities makes it easier for producers to get financing for their project as A-list actors have a higher return-on-investment than unknown actors. It is often discussed by Hollywood casting directors, who often look at social media followers as a measurement as to rank actors for a particular acting role.

Step 2:

The casting director will then post roles for actors to audition. After receiving video auditions, casting directors make a list of actors who might be able to work on the project for each role in the script. The director and producer then work together to select the right actor for the project.

For leading roles, the casting director, producer, and filmmaker may meet with the interested actors, then discuss the project before making the final casting decision. But, this process is different for smaller roles. For these more minor roles, the casting director usually works independently, posting casting calls, reviewing auditions, and making choices based on the producer’s likes and dislikes.

Once the audition is released, talent agents and managers begin submitting actors for roles. Typically, within 24 hours, casting directors will receive thousands of submissions for one part.

The casting director may even receive emails, messages, and phone calls, from talent agents and managers pitching their talent for a speaking role. The point of the sales pitch is to sell an actor for the project.

Step 3:

Casting directors then select actors for a role by reviewing headshots and video auditions for the project. Each casting company has a different casting process.

For open casting calls, actors who are not represented by a talent agent or manager will have the ability to apply for a role they meet the criteria. That said, there are many scams in the film industry. Please review our guide on how to avoid acting audition scams here.

‘The Lovebirds’ is The First Movie to Skip Theaters and Go to Netflix Due to the Coronavirus

0

Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjani’s ‘The Lovebirds’ is headed to Netflix due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

As we previously reported, the Coronavirus is upending the film industry with many movies skipping movie theaters and going directly to streaming platforms. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix will release one movie, which was set to hit theaters in the next couple of weeks.

Kumail Nanjani and Issa Rae’s romantic comedy ‘The Lovebirds’ is headed to Netflix. Directed by Michael Showalter, who also directed Nanjiani’s ‘The Big Sick’, ‘The Lovebirds’ centers around a couple who end up mistakenly accused of murder and are forced to clear their names. The movie was set to premiere at SXSW. But, SXSW was canceled due to the coronavirus and then hit theaters on April 3rd. Then, Regal and AMC both closed their theaters nationwide.

You can now stream movies including recent releases such as ‘The Invisible Man,’ ‘The Hunt,’ and ‘Emma’.

In other entertainment news, Batman director Christopher Nolan calls for America to save movie theaters. Critically acclaimed director Christopher Nolan has written an op-ed for The Washington Postbegins the nation to keep theaters alive during the coronavirus pandemic.

“When people think about movies, their minds first go to the stars, the studios, the glamour,” writes Nolan. “But the movie business is about everybody: the people working the concession stands, running the equipment, taking tickets, booking movies, selling advertising and cleaning bathrooms in local theaters. Regular people, many paid hourly wages rather than a salary, earn a living running the most affordable and democratic of our community gathering places.”

Coronavirus: Apple Donating Millions of Masks

Apple is donating masks to healthcare workers on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic.

Apple is donating several million industrial-grade respirator masks to health care organizations, following the shortage of supplies and equipment needed to help those affected by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, confirmed on Saturday saying supplies would go to providers in the United States and Europe.

“Our teams at Apple have been working to help source supplies for healthcare providers fighting COVID-19,” Cook wrote in a post on Twitter. “We’re donating millions of masks for health professionals in the US and Europe. To every one of the heroes on the front lines, we thank you.”

At a press conference, Vice President Mike Pence said Apple was donating 2 million masks to U.S. organizations. “The president and I literally heard directly from Apple that they’re donating 2 million industrial masks to this effort around the country and working with our administration to distribute those,” Pence told reporters.

Variety reports, it is unknown how Apple will procure such a large amount of N95 respirator masks.

Apple is not alone Georgia-filmed ‘The Resident’ donated masks to local healthcare workers. Dr. Karen Law, a rheumatologist at Grady Memorial Hospital, thanked the production for the donation on Instagram.

“To the entire team @theresidentonfox, thank you for this incredibly generous donation of #PPE from your set, including gowns, masks, gloves, and all the things our healthcare workers need to provide safe care for our community during #COVID19,” she wrote. “Yesterday, I had a serious discussion with the residents about how, though supplies are low, a magical shipment of masks is unlikely to arrive. And yet, a magical shipment of masks DID arrive, in the form of this very generous gesture. This kind of community support means so much to our #frontlineproviders who are making many sacrifices to staff our hospitals and care for our community.”

‘The Resident’ films in Atlanta and is among many TV shows and movies that are shut down while the world tries to self-distance and contain COVID-19.

Netflix, YouTube Limit Streaming Quality Amid Coronavirus Outbreak

Netflix and YouTube limit streaming quality in Europe.

Social Distancing and self-isolation are becoming the new normal due to the coronavirus outbreak. Platforms such as Netflix and YouTube have seen a viral rise in content streaming. The EU has asked content providers to limit their services to protect network crashes caused by increased internet traffic. While some internet providers have reassured customers, they can handle traffic fluctuations. It is feared network crashes with an increase in online gaming, video streaming, and remote working caused by the pandemic can cause significant issues.

Typically, broadband is set up and designed to handle evening traffic surges, yet quarantine mandates across the world are causing long periods of trace beyond “peak traffic” times. Netflix has admitted that increased content streaming could cause problems, but emphasized its existing measures, which allows the company to adjust the content resolution based on bandwidth, which will alleviate and prevent any issues.

“Commissioner Breton is right to highlight the importance of ensuring that the internet continues to run smoothly during this critical time,” said a Netflix spokesperson. “We’ve been focused on network efficiency for many years, including providing our open connect service for free to telecommunications companies.”

A YouTube spokesperson said: “While we have seen only a few usage peaks, we have measures in place to automatically adjust our system to use less network capacity. We are in ongoing conversations with the regulators (including Ofcom), governments and network operators all over Europe, and are making a commitment to temporarily default all traffic in the UK and the EU to Standard Definition.”

Director Christopher Nolan Begs Americans to Save Movie Theaters

Christopher Nolan pleads for America to save the movie theater industry during the Coronavirus outbreak.

Critically acclaimed director Christopher Nolan has written an op-ed for The Washington Post, begins the nation to keep theaters alive during the coronavirus pandemic.

“The past few weeks have been a reminder, if we needed one, that there are parts of life that are far more important than going to the movies. But, when you consider what theaters provide, maybe not so many as you might think,” Nolan continues. “Movie theaters have gone dark and will stay that way for a time. But movies, unlike unsold produce or unearned interest, don’t cease to be of value. Much of this short-term loss is recoverable. When this crisis passes, the need for collective human engagement, the need to live and love and laugh and cry together, will be more powerful than ever. The combination of that pent-up demand and the promise of new movies could boost local economies and contribute billions to our national economy. We don’t just owe it to the 150,000 workers of this great American industry to include them in those we help; we owe it to ourselves. We need what movies can offer us.”

For the full op-ed, head over to the Washington Post now.

As movie theaters close world wide for an unknown amount of time, Warner Bros. is reportedly considering whether to take their upcoming D.C. Comics movie “Wonder Woman 1984” directly to streaming platforms and skip movie theaters.

The Wrap reports Warner Bros has not decided, and meetings are ongoing between Warner Pictures Group Chairman Toby Emmerich and his top advisors. Also, sources close to The Wrap report the movie’s director Patty Jenkins and executive producer Charles Roven are not involved in the decision-making for the upcoming future of ‘Wonder Woman 1984’.

Netflix Starts $100 Million Coronavirus Disaster Relief Fund to Help Actors and Crew Members

0

Netflix is giving back to creators and the TV and movie industry affected by the Coronavirus.

According to Variety, Netflix created a $100 million Coronavirus relief fund.

As the Coronavirus spreads throughout the world, Netflix’s fund will help members of the creative community are unemployed and have no way to make money during the COVID-19 outbreak. Netflix says the majority of the fund will go toward supporting unemployed crew members who were laid-off by the outbreak.

“The COVID-19 crisis is devastating for many industries, including the creative community. Almost all television and film production has now ceased globally — leaving hundreds of thousands of crew and cast without jobs,” Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement. “These include electricians, carpenters and drivers, many of whom are paid hourly wages and work on a project-to-project basis. This community has supported Netflix through the good times, and we want to help them through these hard times, especially while governments are still figuring out what economic support they will provide.”

The entertainment industry is struggling with hundreds of thousands of unemployed creators, filmmakers, writers, screenwriters, producers and actors. According to the IATSE, 120,000 crew members are unemployed since last week. Guilds and unions including SAG-AFTRA are pressing the U.S. government for assistance during these hard times.

$15 million of the Netflix Coronavirus Outbreak fund will go towards third parties and non-profits to provide emergency relief to unemployed cast and crew members around the world where there’s a huge production base. Netflix said they will also donate $1 million to the SAG-AFTRA COVID-19 Disaster Found,  the Motion Picture & Television Fund, and the Actors Fund Emergency Assistance in the U.S., as well as $1 million between the AFC and Fondation des Artistes.

Ted Sarandos said the company is also working with film industry organizations to support Europe, Latin America, and Asia, where many of their productions are filmed. Netflix is looking at productions to determine if crew members and actors need help.

“What’s happening is unprecedented,” Sarandos said. “We are only as strong as the people we work with and Netflix is fortunate to be able to help those hardest hit in our industry through this challenging time.”

In relevant news, On Friday, March 20, Lee Thomas, Deputy Commissioner of the Georgia Film Office, issued a statement about the Coronavirus and its impact on the number 1 filming capital of the world for blockbuster movies.

Thomas began by stating Georgia’s film industry is “stronger than ever” and listed several notable achievements including supporting 3,040 film industry businesses and delivering $9.2 billion in total wages.

Thomas continued by saying, “Film and television production activity has come to a virtual standstill not only in Georgia, but across the country, in a necessary response to halt the virus and save lives.”

Coronavirus: Georgia’s Film Industry is Ready to Bounce Back

0

Once the Coronavirus Pandemic is over, Georgia’s film industry is set to bounce back.

Leaders in Georgia’s film and TV industry are optimistic about the future of the state’s film industry despite the Hollywood shutdown.

Reps from the film industry reported 100% of the people working on the frontlines of the film industry are now unemployed due to the Georgia stay-at-home order.

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees reported: “The entire entertainment industry is shut down”.

Michael Akins, the IATSE business agent explained, “There are no public events. You’re talking tens of thousands of people who make their living in this are sitting at home. They have no way to work. They don’t work for a company,” he said. “They’re essentially unemployed.”

But, Georgia’s film industry is expected to bounce bank. Entertainment  Stephen Weizenecker told The Center Square “that even though production sets are closed, people still are working behind the scenes to secure deals and create content.” Weizenecker added that lost production studios are still open negotiating new deals and financing with banks.

It is important to note social-distancing mandates have caused an increased demand for online video content with nearly all major streaming platforms seeing a significant rise in the number of people and hours streamed per day.

Weizenecker says he expects Georgia’s film industry to bounce bank. “Georgia is well-positioned to remain a top production center. In fact, we are currently hosting an extensive slate of feature films – everything from ‘Red Notice’ to ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ to television series including ‘Council of Dads’ and ‘Doom Patrol.’ ”

How the Coronavirus is impacting Georgia’s film industry.

On Friday, March 20, Lee Thomas, Deputy Commissioner of the Georgia Film Office, issued a statement about the Coronavirus and its impact on the number 1 filming capital of the world for blockbuster movies.

“We know that many local crew, actors, studios, small businesses and more will feel the short-term impact from the halt in production activity, and response efforts have been activated and are in the early stages of planning to help our economy and the people who drive it.”

Thomas adds hope to those affected by the film industry shut down, “I want you to know that when these projects are up and running again, Georgia is well-positioned to remain a top production center.”

The press release goes on to list the several TV shows and movies that are in production and headed to the small screen. Thomas explained the demand for digital content will continue to make Georgia home for the film industry.

Thomas concluded by thanking everyone who has contributed to the film industry. “Bottom line – it is our mission to create jobs for Georgians and we are confident that the state will maintain its position as a powerhouse for film and television production.”

Kylie Jenner Shares Advice to Fight the Coronavirus

Kylie Jenner is giving back and using her influencer power to fight the coronavirus.

The 22-year-old billionaire took to Instagram on Thursday to share her best advice for fighting COVID-19. This news comes after the Surgeon General Jerome Adams, went on “Good Morning America” earlier in the day and asked social media influencers to help fight the Coronavirus.

“Hey, guys. Happy self-quarantine!” Jenner says in the Instagram post. “I know I’ve already been doing my daily reminders about how important it is right now to practice social distancing and self-quarantine. I’m going on my ninth day. The coronavirus is a real thing. I listened to the Surgeon General this morning…he definitely encouraged me to come on here and talk to you guys.”

“Please stay inside,” she begged. “Please stay inside. Practice social distancing, self-quarantine. If you live with your parents, you don’t want to go home and get your parents sick. You might have it and not even know and be infecting other people. It’s serious and the only way that we’re gonna slow this down is if we do this because there is not a cure right now.”

Jenner went on to explain, “Nobody is immune to this. Millennials are not immune to this.” “New evidence,” she pointed out, “actually shows that a large percentage of people in the hospital right now are young adults.”

“I love you guys,” she said. “We’re going to get through this together. We just have to listen to each other, respect each other, self-quarantine.”

She then encouraged other influencers to speak up to their fanbases.

This news comes after thousands of people lost their job following the Hollywood shutdown and the potential for a long-term shutdown in the film industry. Filmmaking across the country is currently on hiatus as the coronavirus outbreak continues to spread around the world.

The CDC issued a recommendation, which could become a mandate that all gather over 50 people should be canceled or postponed for the next eight weeks,  which would mean into at least mid-May. That would almost assuredly include TV show and movie productions, where even a barebones staff would consist of very few crew operators, crew workers, and producers on a set.

‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Could Skip Theaters Amid Coronavirus Outbreak

Is ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ coming soon to theaters?

Currently, the movie is on track to hit theaters but, executives are considering streaming the video as direct-to-consumer instead of a Warner Bros’ subscription service HBO Max. The problem is, there is no known date as to when movie theaters will reopen, and there may be a shortage of favorable release dates once theaters do open for the many movies that studios have decided to due to the Coronavirus. ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ is still set to hit theaters on June 4ht.

Universal recently decided to distribute the ‘Trolls World Tour’ via streaming platforms for a 48-hour rental charge of $19.99. The decision came after the spread of Coronavirus was a top priority, but U.S. movie theaters were still open. Since then, theater chains have closed indefinitely across the United States.

Universal is also planning to release new video-on-demand movies for three films, including “The Hunt,” The Invisible Man,” and “Emma.” Several others have followed suit for films just in theaters, including Warner’s “Birds of Prey” and “The Way Back,” Sony’s “Bloodshot,” Disney’s “Onward” and Lionsgate’s “I Still Believe.”

‘Wonder Woman’ is an entirely different type of movie. In 2017, ‘Wonder Woman’ was the highest-grossing film by a female director and the 10th highest-grossing movie of 2017. Based on the success of the first film, analysts expect the movie to surpass 2017’s earnings. For example, ‘Aquaman’ made $1.15 billion on a $160 million budget.

‘Wonder Woman 1984’ is set during the late height of the Cold War and features Gal Gadot as Diana Prince as she battles the villain Cheetah, who is played by Kristen Wiig. The movie also sees Jenkins return and Chris Pine as Steve Trevor.

In related news, the Coronavirus is killing jobs and leaving millions unemployed. Americans filing for unemployment benefits reached its highest numbers in two years for the week of March 14. However, job losses are expected to climb in the next few weeks.

According to Goldman Sachs, more than 2 million Americans are set to lose their jobs and file unemployment by next week due to a massive “unprecedented surge” in layoffs. Goldman Sachs analysts added March 15 to the 21st will see “the largest increase in initial jobless claims and the highest level on record.”
