Sacha Baron Cohen Stayed in Character for Netflix’s ‘The Spy’

Sacha Baron Cohen opens up about how he stayed in character and why he changed from comedy to drama for Netflix’sThe Spy‘.

It is common for many comedians to move into dramatic acting roles, there are some actors who do it better than others. For instance, it would seem hard to believe Sacha Baron Cohen could ever pull off a serious role after hit comedies such as “Borat”, “Bruno” and “Talladega Nights”.

That said, Cohen is starring in his most high-profile role in the Netflix “The Spy”, where he plays the real-life Israeli spy Eli Cohen in the early 1960s who is known as a master impersonator. In an interview with the “New York Times”, Cohen opens up about his commitment to staying in character and why he was embarrassed to be into acting when he was a kid.

When asked for staying in character, Cohen says, “If somebody sees through the character, either the scene ends or the police are called. It can, very occasionally, turn violent. So I learned that I could never drop character. When I was playing Ali G, I remained Ali G. That was the result of a steep learning curve: One day, an interviewee walked in on me while I was out of character, and he complained to [Channel 4’s executives].” Cohen points out that while it’s very different material, he uses a similar approach when portraying Eli Cohen. He explains,  “So when I’m in a scene as Eli Cohen, I am pretending like a kid would be, reacting to things that I’m hearing as if I’m Eli Cohen.”

Despite being a professional hit actor, Cohen admits that he had a hard time admitting he wanted to be an actor and he kept his love a secret. He says, “It was embarrassing to admit to other people that I wanted to be a comedian because I was essentially telling people that I thought I was funny. That’s as embarrassing as someone saying, ‘I want to be a model.’ You risk people saying ‘You’re far too ugly to become a model.”

Cohen added, “So I really kept my ambition to perform hidden, though I ended up going to Cambridge in order to join the Cambridge Footlights drama club. I was denied entry for three years but joined up in year four. I did a number of dramatic productions — Cyrano de BergeracFiddler on the RoofTamburlaine the Great — so I had to learn how to act. That ended up being useful later in my career. But the idea of making a living from acting or being a comic was absurd.”

Cohen admits one aspect of his love of acting is that it is still embarrassing. “I love doing musicals. I even snuck in some musical numbers into the early Ali G Show. Musicals are my embarrassing passion; they give me joy.”

‘When They See Us’ Netflix Casting Director Shares Tips for Aspiring Actors

Netflix casting director, Aisha Coley (‘When They See Us’), reveals her tips to landing a role in a Netflix series.

Several months ago, Project Casting shared the casting call breakdown for the lead roles in ‘When They See Us’. Since then the series has become an award-winning drama and the cast members are known around the world.

Aisha Coley won an Emmy for her casting in the Netflix miniseries “When They See Us“. The series centers around the Central Park Five and chronicles the lives of five young people who were charged for a crime they did not commit.

Netflix audition tips:

In a recent conversation with Awards Daily, Coley opens up about her experiences casting the Netflix series, shares some details about how the cast was discovered, and in the process, she reveals advice for aspiring actors. Ultimately, it comes down to two major points.:

  • Research the role
  • Have a good manager
  • Know your acting skillsets and use them

Research the Role

Coley explains it all starts with research. She says, “The first thing we started with was research. We researched the five young men to get an idea of them. People knew about the case but didn’t know them intimately – who they were, how they spoke, how they moved. Then, we started looking for the kids. We cast a wide net to really just bring together some good kids for the younger roles. After that, we started narrowing it down based on looks and so forth.”

Have a good talent manager

Coley points to Jharrell Jerome who plays Korey Wise. Corey reveals, “He auditioned earlier on, but he was working on something that required him to have a beard at the time. He did a really good reading, but Ava really needed to see him without the beard because he was auditioning for young Korey. We waited, and his manager really stayed on it. She really gets a lot of credit here and really made sure he stayed on our radar. When he could shave the beard, he read for Ava in New York. When she saw him in the room, she realized maybe he could do both parts. He read both parts at the time. She sent me the tape, and he was amazing. He’s so talented and has a special quality that you see when he reads.”

Use your acting skills in the audition

Asante Blackk

When sharing advice on how to have a great audition, Coley uses Asante Blackk as an example, who plays Kevin Richardson in the show. She says, “The thing is to really know your craft and to be able to own it when you audition. When you go into auditions, each one is important. It’s important to show your best each time you walk in the room. Even if you don’t get this job, you may be under consideration for something else. Casting directors may remember you and bring you back for something else. Asante Blackk we read for another project before this one, and we remembered him for this. It’s just really important to make a great impression as well as keep studying and knowing your craft.”

Joaquin Phoenix’s Audition for ‘Joker’ [VIDEO]

Joaquin Phoenix’s audition for ‘Joker’ is finally here and it is amazing.

Joaquin Phoenix’s acting in the movie ‘Joker’ will go down in history as one of the best acting performances of the decade.

In October 2018, production was in full swing for the ‘Joker’ movie. In fact, there were casting calls looking for background extras to work on an upscale scene in New York City.

But, one of the biggest casting calls for the movie took place months before and it was for the role of Arthur Fleck better known as The Joker.

In a recently released video by Flashback Filmmaking, the audition shows actor Joaquin Phoenix in character for the feature film. The video audition also shows his dance moves, costume, and other key aspects of the Joker movie.

Ultimately, the movie’s director Todd Phillips made the right decision. ‘Joker’ was a hit at the box office and Joaquin Phoenix is on track to win an Academy Award for his performance in the comic book movie.

Joaquin Phoenix opens up about his ‘Jokeracting method.

Joker, which Project Casting previously shared casting calls for, has become a cultural phenomenon. The Academy has nominated Joaquin Phoenix three times. While the actor is known for not talking very much to the media, he does share his acting process for his new movie ‘Joker’.

The movie maps the progression of the eponymous figure from a disenfranchised, psychologically disturbed loner into a violent madman who inspires violence. Phoenix has drawn praise for his acting performance.

Phoenix revealed his thoughts and acting process for when the movie debuted at the Venice Film Festival, where the feature won the coveted Golden Lion award.

What is Joaquin Phoenix’s acting technique for ‘Joker’?

  • Don’t imitate past jokers
  • Have a physical transformation
  • Writing a journal
  • Perfecting the laugh

Do not imitate

While many actors have played Joker on TV shows and movies including Caesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill, and Heath Ledger, Phoenix admitted he wanted to take his own approach to the world-famous comic book character.

Joaquin Phoenix said he wanted to do it his way. He says, “For me, the attraction to make this film and this character was that we were going to approach it in our own way. So for me, I didn’t refer to past interpretations of the character.”

Physical transformation

Phoenix changed his body physically. He did not just put on makeup. Phoenix lost over 50 pounds to reflect the character’s mental and physical attributes. He says, “The first thing for us was the weight loss—I think that’s really what I started with. And, as it turns out, that then affects your psychology. You start to go mad when you lose that amount of weight in that amount of time. There’s a book that I read about political assassins and would-be assassins that I thought was really interesting, and kind of breaks down the different types of personalities that do those sorts of things.”

Joaquin Phoenix’s actor journal

To find his Joker identity Joaquin Phoenix actor wrote in a journal to find the character’s mindset. Phoenix explains, “Very early on in the rehearsal, I was given the journal that he had—his journal and joke diary. And that was really helpful, because I had been there for a couple of weeks and wasn’t sure how I was going to start, and Todd [Phillips, director] sent this [empty]journal. I didn’t know what to write, so I asked [Todd] for some suggestions, and after a few days, I ignored his suggestions and suddenly it was coming out. It became a really important part of the discovery of the character at that time.”

Joker Laugh

Phoenix reveals it required a lot of practice to find the right voice for his version of Joker’s laugh. He explained, “Before I even read the script, Todd came over and talked me through what he wanted out of this character and this movie, and he showed me some videos, and he described the laughter as something that was almost painful. And so ultimately, I think Joker is a part of him that’s trying to emerge, and I think that was a really interesting way of looking at this laugh… It felt like a new, fresh way of looking at it. But honestly, I didn’t think that I could do it. I would practice alone and then asked Todd to come over to audition my laugh, because I felt like I had to do it on the spot and in front of somebody else. It took me a long time.”

Matt Damon Turned Down ‘Avatar’ Role and Lost Out on $250 Million

Matt Damon revealed he had missed out on a $250 million payday after turning down the lead role in James Cameron‘s 2009 sci-fi movie Avatar.

In a recent interview with GQ for a promotional tour for the upcoming “Ford v Ferrari,” which filmed in Savannah, Georgia, Damon says studios approached him with an offer to pay him 10% of what the movie would end up making.

“[Cameron] goes, ‘Now, listen. I don’t need anybody. I don’t need a name for this, a named actor. If you don’t take this, I’m going to find an unknown actor and give it to him, because the movie doesn’t need you. But if you take part, I’ll give you 10 percent of [the profits],’” the actor said.

Unfortunately, due to prior contractual obligations to “The Bourne Ultimatum” had to turn the offer down. “Avatar” would become the second-highest-grossing movie in history, earning $2.79 billion. The film would end up losing to “Avengers: Endgame” after 10-years. The offer would have made $250 million.

“I’ve left more money on the table than any actor actually,” Damon continued. “I mean, the bigger thing still to this day, my bigger regret is — it would have caused a problem for Paul Greengrass and all my friends on The Bourne Ultimatum, so I couldn’t do it — but Cameron said to me in the course of that conversation, ‘Well, you know, I’ve only made six movies.’ I didn’t realize that. He works so infrequently, but his movies, you know all of them.”

Martin Scorsese Calls Marvel Movies Not Real “Cinema”

Samuel L. Jackson and James Gunn call out Martin Scorsese as the director calls out Marvel movies for not being real “cinema”.

Marvel’s Cinematic Universe has produced some of the biggest movies in cinematic history. While the franchise is arguably the biggest in human history, legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese is not a big fan of the superhero empire. In an interview by Empire magazine, the 76-year old filmmaker shared his thoughts on superhero movies. Scorses says he does not consider those movies to be real “cinema.”

“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema,” Scorsese tells Empire Magazine. “Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

“Martin Scorsese is one of my five favorite living filmmakers. I was outraged when people picketed The Last Temptation of Christ without having seen the film. I’m saddened that he’s now judging my films in the same way,” director and screenwriter James Gunn (The Guardians of the Galaxy and The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) responded via Twitter to Scorsese’s Empire comments. “That said, I will always love Scorsese, be grateful for his contribution to cinema, and can’t wait to see The Irishman.”

Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was attending a gala celebrating the opening of Tyler Perry’s new studio in Atlanta when he was asked about Scorses’ comments by Variety.

“That’s kind of like saying Bugs Bunny ain’t funny,” Jackson said. “Films are films. You know, everybody doesn’t like his stuff either. I mean, we happen to, but everybody doesn’t. There are a lot of Italian-Americans that don’t think he should be making films about them like that. Everybody’s got an opinion, so it’s okay. It’s not going to stop anyone from making movies.”
