Sandra Oh on TV Acting and Fighting For Her Character

Actress Sandra Oh discussed her experiences on Grey’s Anatomy and the importance for her to fight for her character.

For 10 years, Sandra Oh played Dr. Christina Yang on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. Over time, she understood her character and what Dr. Yang would do in every situation. IN a recent interview with Variety’s ‘Actors on Actors’ series, Sandra explained she would have to fight for her character and even go “toe to toe” with the writers including Shonda Rhimes.

IN an interview with Kerry Washington, Sandra said, “What I was able to get from Grey’s is to have the responsibility and the relationship with the writer to be able to direct where she’s going. If something kind of came up which was like, ‘That is completely wrong,’ I would go toe to toe with Shonda and a lot of the writers, which has been challenging.”

She added, “But just the friction itself, a lot of times a third thing would come out, and it would not be in my sight of consciousness at all; it would take that pushing against someone equally as strong. I started to learn how to trust that.”

One time in particular was when her character married Prestorn Burke (Isiah Washington) on the show. She said, “When we did Grey’s, for at least the first 10 seasons, we would not talk about race. We would not go into race, and that was purposeful. And whatever, it was the right thing to do when it was.”

She wanted to do a story on the mothers-in-law, who were Asian and Black. She added, “Come on, there is a lot of story that we can do here!” Unfortunately, the writers wouldn’t develop a storyline around it.

Sandra is proud of her self after filming 10 seasons with 22 to 24 episodes each. She finished, “I feel like, when I look back because it’s been six years now since I left Grey’s, I feel like one of my biggest successes, for me, as I don’t feel I gave up.”

Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Black Adam’ To Film in Atlanta This August

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson‘s ‘Black Adam‘ is set to film this August 2020 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Many productions have shut down across the country due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. But, producers, writers, actors, and directors are working hard to get back to work. One such production is Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Black Adam’.

According to reports, Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Black Adam’ is set to film this August 2020.

In a video posted to Instagram, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson took the time to thank fans, revealed his plans to develop and produce his next project for Warner Bros. Pictures.

Apparently, Dwayne Johnson’s character ‘Black Adam’ was make a cameo appearance in ‘Shazam!’ however he felt the character’s presence would have overshadowed the movie’s plot.

“This project… we had some challenges and we took a risk,” said the actor. “As we were developing this a few years ago, the challenges and the struggles that we were having and that was gnawing at my gut [was] that we were trying to tell two origin stories in one script… The challenges were, as you guys can imagine, you’re trying to tell two very big origin stories in the world of comic books of this DC Universe — two very important characters — trying to tell both their origin stories in one script. I didn’t think it was working.”

While doing a Q&A on Instagram Live, the actor said that the movie will start production late summer and he cannot wait to start shooting because he has been training for the role. He also described “Black Adam” as his “passion project.”

“We plan on shooting probably at the end of summer now. Probably pushed maybe into August, maybe September. But I cannot wait for that movie. I have been training so hard for months, and months. That is a passion project for me. It is a role that I hold dear and near to my DNA,” Johnson said.

The movie is being directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who is also working with Johnson in Disney’s forthcoming movie “Jungle Cruise.”

In relevant news, according to a statement by Gov. Brian Kemp, an estimated 40,000 production workers will find jobs at 75 projects, which are expected to start filming over the next 18 months.

The estimate will also impact other second-line businesses including 17,000 Georgia businesses. These production companies have added a huge impact on Georgia’s economy. In fact, in 2019, nearly 400 movies and TV shows filmed in Georgia impacting 3,040 motion picture and television industry businesses.

“Production companies want to be in Georgia and create tens of thousands of jobs for workers across the state, and today’s announcement is welcome news as we continue safely reopening our state,”  Governor Kemp said. “I thank the Georgia Film Office for their work during the pandemic, and I thank the production companies who always vowed to return to Georgia when the time was right for them to safely get back to work.”

New York City Film Production Can Resume as Early as Next Week

Filming in New York City set to resume as early as July 20th

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Friday film and television production in New York City can resume next week. The restrictions of filming were part of the Coronavirus COVID-19 city-wide shutdown, which started in March. Cases have dropped since March and hospitalizations from COVID-19 have dropped to their lowest point in four months.

Film production can begin as part of the city’s Phase 4 reopening. NYC starts loosening restrictions, which allow the city to host professional sporting events, and other business related activity. That said, indoor dining, malls and museums are still closed in Phase 4.

“It’s all about safety,” de Blasio said. “We want to bring people back to work. We want people to get their livelihoods back. We want to bring our city back. But safety and health first, always.”

New York City is a production hub for late night television shows, news productions, and popular TV shows and movies. Also, NYC provides generous film tax incentives.

(Original Post: June 27, 2020) New York released production guidelines to resume filming for TV shows and movies.

Last week, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo released production guidelines following the March Coronavirus COVID-19 shutdown. The new production rules include frequent testing, stricter cleaning procedures, and social distancing.

Last March, several TV shows shut down. The state is looking to resume filming in Phase Four of the Coronavirus Reopening. However, when Phase Four will begin is currently unknown.

The guidelines released on the New York Governor’s website, reveals a long list of production safety precautions that are both mandatory and recommended. Some of the mandatory guidelines include the following:

  • Indoor Facilities limited to no more than 50% maximum occupancy
  • Ensure all employees are 6 ft apart.
  • Ensure all employees wear acceptable face coverings. Actors may temporarily remove their mask during performances/rehearsals
  • Limit the number of employees to essential individuals
  • Take social distancing requirements

Recommended best practices include the following:

  • Use remote services as much as possible
  • Modify the use of work stations to encourage 6ft separation
  • Encourage dedicated work zones
  • Minors should be limited to two accompanying adults and potentially move minors to a secure off-set location
  • Encourage users to drive alone
  • All scouting should take place virtually
  • Ensure people attending casting locations to wait in their cars or outside the facility until their audition.
  • Eliminate open calls

This news comes after background actors are worried Coronavirus guidelines will destroy their acting career.

One of the best ways to get started in the film industry is arguably getting a job as a background actor. The position requires little to no acting experience and gives aspiring actors, filmmakers, and producers the opportunity to see what it is like to work on a production. However, due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 guidelines, movie and TV extras could become a thing of the past replaced with CGI and smaller scenes.

Many guilds including SAG-AFTRA, the Directors Guild, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, and the Cinematographers Guild released rules planned to protect their guild members from infection. However, many of the guidelines suggest guidelines that say to reduce background extras and increase production expenses to hire background actors.

In Los Angeles, the LA County Department of Public Health released guidelines for movies and TV shows saying that the “cast must be as silent as possible to avoid spreading droplets through talking.” Moreover, “Large crowd scenes should be avoided,” which is bad news for background actors who make at around $100 per day.

Sande Alessi is the extras casting director from many hit movies including the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and ‘Argo’. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she says, “Nobody wants what I’m selling,” she says. “Nobody wants human beings.”

In relevant news, Louisiana’s film industry is preparing to resume filming this July 2020.

According to WDSU, Louisiana’s film industry is preparing for a comeback following the Coronavirus COVID-19 shutdown. According to reports, the film industry is planning to get back to work in late July 2020.

Producers and production crews are set to start filming in Lousiana as soon as late July as the film industry is preparing to make major Coronavirus COVID-19 health-related changes.

NBC Cancels Georgia-Filmed ‘Council of Dads’

NBC cancels Georgia-filmed ‘Council of Dads’.

NBC pulled the plug on the second season of “Council of Dads”, a TV series that filmed in Savannah, Georgia.

“We had gotten some hopeful signs but ultimately, I guess, they felt it didn’t make financial sense for them,” showrunner Joan Rater stated.

“We’re heartbroken. For ourselves, but mostly for our stunning cast and crew and all the people who have felt connected to the Perry family,” Rater continued. “We wanted to tell a story about love and Tony and I appreciate more than you can know the love we’ve felt from you.”

The series, which is based on the book by the same name, centers around a father who is diagnosed with cancer and asks his friends to raise his kids if he doesn’t survive.

“I’m going to watch with my head held high and try to see the good here,” she added. “We showed a world we want to live in. Where people lead with kindness, have the ability to forgive, fall down and get back up, even in the worst of times, they find a way forward,” Rater said.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, the series has an approval rating of 50% based on 10 reviews, with a mediocre rating of 5.8/10. The website’s interpretive consensus states, “Council of Dads‘s talented cast tries its best, but its first season is too superficial to make the emotional moves necessary to really connect.”

The series stars Sarah Wayne Callies, Clive Standen, and J. August Richards.

Tiffany Haddish Reveals Why She Turned Down a Role in Chris Rock’s ‘Top Five’

Actress Tiffany Haddish explains why she turned down a role in Chris Rock‘s feature film ‘Top Five’.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, actress Tiffany Haddish revealed she was offered a risqué scene in Chris Rock’s movie ‘Top Five’.

“You know, when I first hit the scene, I was offered a lot of roles where they want you to expose your breasts. I remember that movie that Chris Rock did [Top Five] and it’s like he meets two girls and they have a threesome and then Cedric [the Entertainer] gets in there and he’s supposed to go ‘blah’ all over their faces–just let that baby batter go all up in their face. And it was like, ‘Tiffany, they’re offering you the role.’ And I was like, ‘I don’t want that role. I’m a stand-up comedian and I don’t let people do that in my face in real life, so why would I do it in a movie?’”

Haddish continued, “Like, you ought to have a little bit of respect for me, period. God mad this face for a reason and you’re not going to disrespect it. I feel like sometimes my representation tried to get me to go outside my lane, and if it is against my morals—and I do have some. I know I’m a little wild but I do have standards—then somebody might get fired.”

Haddish said, “It’s like, I’m a company, I’m a brand, and if you try to go against the policy of the company, you might not need to be working here anymore,” she continued. “So my people, we have weekly conversations about where I’m at mentally, what I want to do. And right now, almost everything I’m doing, I’m producing…My lane is big. I got a five-lane highway, and I have standards and I’ll be damned if anybody makes me sway.”

Coronavirus: Louisiana’s Film Industry Set to Resume Filming This July

Louisiana’s film industry is preparing to resume filming this July 2020.

“There could possibly be four weeks of training, two more weeks of quarantining before everybody’s ready to go and then we could potentially have one to three per week testings done for each crew member as we actually go through the process of production,” said Jason Waggenspack with The Ranch Film Studios.

Producers say they hope the huge demand for content will boost Louisiana’s film industry. In related news, TV executives are asking writers to rewrite scenes to allow productions to follow Coronavirus safety guidelines, which means fewer extras, more CGI, and fewer opportunities for smaller speaking roles.

As Coronavirus COVID-19 reopening process is spreading across the world, many studios are preparing for upcoming productions. That said, there is a level of uncertainty on how to film a TV show or movie and still follow Coronavirus production guidelines.

According to a new report by the Hollywood Reporterstudios are asking showrunners to cut background extras, reconsider filming sex and fight scenes, and remove some scenes.

On June 11th, Lacey Rose with The Hollywood Reporter, detailing the impact of the Coronavirus and new filming guidelines is having on the film industry.  Many showrunners are waiting to change their scripts because they do not want to rewrite an episode multiple times while filming guidelines change.

“What we’re telling our writers is ‘Don’t be dumb,’ ” one executive told Hollywood Reporter. They added crowd scenes with several background actors would not work saying, “We’re not going to be able to shoot it, so don’t write it.”

‘Black characters should be played by Black actors’: White Actors Exit Animated Roles

White actresses call for animated shows to hire Black actors to play Black characters.

Amid the ongoing Black Lives Matter conversation, actresses Kristen Bell and Jenny Slate announced Wednesday they will no longer voice mixed-race characters on animated series, so those roles can be given to Black actors.

Jenny Slate first created the shift when she announced she would stop voicing Missy Foreman-Greenwald, the character she’s played on Netflix’s ‘Big Mouth’ since the show debuted on Netflix in 2017.

The actress said she previously told her self that she was allowed to play the character because her mother was Jewish and white, just like her own mother. She realized that Black characters should be played by Black actors.

“I acknowledge how my original reasoning was flawed,” Slate said, “that it existed as an example of white privilege and unjust allowances made within a system of societal white supremacy, and that in me playing ‘Missy,’ I was engaging in an act of erasure of Black people.”

She apologized to anyone she’d hurt and promised to take better actions in the future.

Nick Kroll, one of the show’s creator said, “We wholeheartedly agree.” Kroll apologized for the show’s decision to cast a white actor in the role and promised to do better for the show’s character.

“We are proud of the representation Missy has offered cerebral, sensitive women of color, and we plan to continue that representation and further grow Missy’s character as we recast a Black actor to play her,” he said.

Netflix renewed the series in July and the show was renewing, which aired its third season last year, through the sixth season.

Jenny Slate is not alone.  Bell plays Molly on Apple TV+’s new series ‘Central Park’. In a statement from the show, she said the “entire creative team recognizes that the casting of Molly is an opportunity to get representation right — to cast a Black or mixed race actress and give Molly a voice that resonates with all of the nuance and experiences of the character as we’ve drawn her.” They added Bell would continue to be part of the show.

Bell released her own statement saying she showed a “lack of awareness of my pervasive privilege” and considered the casting “wrong”.
