The film industry has grown tremendously in Georgia and New Mexico. On Wednesday, Arizona lawmakers are considering a bill that will attempt to lure TV shows and movies to the state.
“Other states are blowing us away,” said Randy Murray with the Arizona Film and Media Coalition.
Murray supports new legislation to find filmmaking incentives to attract projects to Arizona.
“We are where the movie, the TV industry, the gaming industry wants to come,” said Murray. “The government is just not letting it happen.”
Not every one is happy about financial incentives. cot Mussi with the Arizona Free Enterprise Club, believe incentives are bad for taxpayers.
“[There are] already benefits for people to film here,” said Mussi. “At the end of the day, when you look at the numbers, the pros, and cons, this is a bad investment for taxpayers.”
According to Fox 10, people with the Arizona Free Enterprise Club will testify against the incentive on Wednesday. Mussi claim when the state had incentives in the early 2000s and it failed.
“It didn’t deliver on the jobs promised,” said Mussi. “The only jobs that were created were low-paying. Most of the movies provided no bang for the buck for the State of Arizona. It was a net loser.”
Merry says the industry is waiting to grow. “We give them a check for the amount of sales tax they spent, and only what they spent,” said Murray. “They don’t get a single dime of taxpayer dollars.”
“It’s just a great place to shoot,” said Murray. “We should be busy every single day.”

Filming in Los Angeles is booming, but some production companies are leaving due to the lack of studio space.
In a new report by the Los Angeles Times, the number of TV shows and movies filming in LA is rising. However, some crews are leaving the area due to the lack of space to film their projects. The problem is nicknamed the “Space Race.”
Thanks to streaming services such as Netflix, who are spending billions on original TV shows and movies, there is a plethora of projects now filming across Southern California. California’s film tax credit has also brought back TV shows and lower budget movies to the state. But, the increase in demand is causing a strain for studio space, and producers are starting to look outside Los Angeles to film the projects.
FilmL.A. President Paul Audley said the lack of studio space is the reason why there is a drop-in location filming in Los Angeles.
“The unions tell us everybody is working, so it’s not ‘the sky is falling,’ but the truth of it is we could do more and do better and probably see those numbers crawl back up to the highest levels … if we had space,” Audley told The Times.
Los Angeles has over 300 soundstages and a total of 4.73 million square feet of production space. As the Los Angeles Times points out, empty warehouses, which can be transformed into generic sets, makes Los Angeles have a total of 5.7 million square feet of production space. The total amount of production space in Los Angeles is nearly as much as California’s top five competitors – New York, Georgia, Louisiana, and Canada combined.
Los Angeles Times suggests the problem is certified production spaces. A study by FilmL.A., which handles film permits for the city and the county, found the occupancy rate for soundstage is 96%. The total number is expected to be even higher in an updated report, which is set to be released soon.
The lack of studio space gives more opportunities for Atlanta, Albuquerque, and Vancouver to gain more productions to the state with their steep tax credits. Producers are forced to either leave the area or film in an area that is not designed for filming.
The lack of studio space is causing an increase in demand in real estate. Craig Peters, an industrial real estate broker at CBRE, explains how the industry is doing. “Time and time again, we are seeing industrial buildings get converted into soundstages because all the operating soundstages are pretty much at 0% vacancy, and they have got a line of guys waiting for them.”

Charlize Theron reveals her acting techniques and why she is not a method actor.
As we previously described in our guide to acting styles, Method Acting is one of the most popular acting techniques in the film industry. In a recent interview, Charlize Theron discussed her approach to acting in movies and television. In the process, she explains why she no longer uses the method acting process to get into character and portray a role in a movie or TV show.
The 2019 drama ‘Bombshell’ was not a hit at the box office. But it was praised by industry professionals for the acting. One of the actors receiving the most praise includes Academy Award winner Charlize Theron as former Fox News anchorwoman Megyn Kelly. Theron was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Kelly. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, she discussed playing Kelly and why she does not consider herself a Method actor.
Theron explained it was important to her to play her character as accurately as possible; In turn, she says it helped her understand Kelly better as a person. “The work that I had done with the dialect and just watching her mannerisms, how she pulls her face or how she holds herself, and the way she sounds, actually really informed me on how she was revealing herself emotionally.”
Theron continues, “You just start to see this repetitive voice that pops out and then you kind of go back and you can see that there’s a similarity in the emotion; it’s a little bit like building a puzzle. But I’m not Method. My capacity is, you know, maybe two, three hours a day if that. And then I’m trying to keep the movie going and doing other things.”
Though Theron is known for fully getting herself in the role that won her an Oscar (in 2003’s Monster), she claims that she is not a Method actor because of a challenging experience early in her career. She reveals, “I can’t do the Method thing. I did it once, for Devil’s Advocate, and I was just exhausted. It was really hard to go to those deep, dark places because I was so tired. It was good for me to figure this out, and I am much better now at understanding and living and breathing in the moment with the character.”
