Netflix Announces Colin Kaepernick Series Coming Soon

0

Netflix announced ‘Colin in Black & White’ a new series centering around the life of NFL players and political Civil Rights activist Colin Kaepernick.

The new series is produced by Emmy Award Winner and Academy Award nominee Ava DuVernay.

According to Netflix, the official synopsis is as follows: “The six-episode series, which was conceived in 2019 and recently completed writing in May, provides an introspective look at Kaepernick’s early life as a Black child growing up with a white adopted family and his journey to becoming a great quarterback while defining his identity. The limited series reunites Starrbury and DuVernay who last worked together on Netflix’s acclaimed When They See Us, which received 16 Emmy Award Nominations, including a nomination for Outstanding Writing for the duo and was recently honored with a Peabody Award. “

“With his act of protest, Colin Kaepernick ignited a national conversation about race and justice with far-reaching consequences for football, culture and for him, personally,” said DuVernay in a statement. “Colin’s story has much to say about identity, sports and the enduring spirit of protest and resilience. I couldn’t be happier than to tell this story with the team at Netflix.” Kaepernick also commented: “Too often we see race and Black stories portrayed through a white lens. We seek to give new perspective to the differing realities that Black people face. We explore the racial conflicts I faced as an adopted Black man in a white community, during my high school years. It’s an honor to bring these stories to life in collaboration with Ava for the world to see.”

There is currently no official release date from Netflix.

Colin Kaepernick played six seasons for the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL. As a political activist, he kneed during the national anthem in protest of police brutality and racial inequality in America. The actions resulted in a wider protest movement, which intensified in 2017 after President Donald Trump said the NFL owners should “fire” players who protest the anthem. Kaepernick would become a free agent after the season, but no team would sign him. According to stats provided by FiveThirtyEight, “it’s obvious Kaepernick is being frozen out for his political opinions”, calling it “extraordinary … that a player like him can’t find a team”, based on the observation that “no above-average quarterback [measured by the total quarterback rating] has been unemployed nearly as long as Kaepernick this offseason.” In November 107, he filed a complaint against the NFL, accusing them of colluding to keep him out of the NFL. Kaepernick withdrew the grievance in February 2019 after reaching a confidential settlement with the NFL. More recently, his protest are praised in 2020 amid the George Floyd protests, the growing Black Lives Matter movement, and the campaign against police brutality and racism

Coronavirus: Hollywood Calls for New COVID-19 Relief Package

The Motion Picture Association, SAG-AFTRA, and other organizations called for aid to help the Entertainment industry.

As the Coronavirus COVID-19 continues to spread across America, Hollywood is asking lawmakers to create new legislation to save the entertainment industry. In a letter to Congressional leaders, leading TV and Film groups outlined policies to save the entertainment industry. These policies including hiring incentives, a federal insurance program, and changes to the tax code.

“These policies would help jumpstart domestic film and television production, encourage hiring and ameliorate the higher costs that must be undertaken to protect our industry’s workforce,” states the letter signed by the leaders of the Motion Picture Association, the Directors Guild of America, the Independent Film & Television Alliance, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and SAG-AFTRA.

The entertainment industry is supporting incentives that provide relief to employers who hire workers. They say the tax credits should also be available to employers who rehire workers who had previously worked for the company.

The letter, which was obtained and reported by The Hollywood Reporterincludes proposals that would directly benefit the TV and film industry. Lawmakers are asked to modify the tax code related to filming in the United States. Under Section 181, any production filmed in the United States and meets basic qualifications can deduct $15 million of Federal Tax costs. One idea is to expand the cap changing it to $15 million or 50% of overall production costs, whichever is greater.

SAG-AFTRA and other groups are looking at allowing performing artist to deduct their own unreimbursed employment expenses. Currently, tax code allows for only low-income workers making $16,000 or less. However, SAG-AFTRA writes, “We ask Congress to pass the Performing Artist Tax Parity Act (HR 3121), which will raise the maximum income cap to $100,000 for individual filers and $200,000 for joint filers.”

The biggest policy suggestion is a federal insurance program to cover pandemic-related losses.

“The ability of our industry to return to active production, whether on set or on location, is severely compromised by the inability to purchase insurance to cover losses stemming from communicable diseases amongst cast, crew, and others involved in the production,” states the letter. “This insurance has been available in the past and is essential to the decisions by banks and others to risk investment in a film or program that may be shut down while a single member of the cast recovers from illness or as a result of civil authority order unrelated to the specific production. Without it, production – especially independent production – cannot resume on a significant level. We urge Congress to develop a program of federal insurance (or guarantee to fill this gap) to cover pandemic-related business losses in the future.”

As we previously reported, the biggest issue to resuming the film industry is the insurance companies’ reluctance to cover any project in the event the Coronavirus outbreak spreads on set.

According to a report by Varietyinsurance companies are not willing to take the risk to resume productions amid the Coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak.

“In the movie industry, there’s probably $300 million to $500 million in claims because of coronavirus,” says Bob Jellen, managing director of the entertainment practice at Hub Intl., a major insurance broker told Variety.

Many insurance companies have decided they do not plan on covering pandemic-related insurance claims on any new policies. Consequently, producers will have to resume production without insurance or shutdown production indefinitely.

This news comes after Federal lawmakers are preparing for a third major COVID-19 relief package. The CARES Act provided direct payments to Americans and forgivable loans to businesses.

Here are the nine next movies to film in California.

(UPDATE: August 17, 2020) The Coronavirus is creating a frustrating atmosphere for filmmakers across the country. Hollywood is attempting to resume production amid new safety procedures. Now, nine new features are planning to film in California.

The California Film Commission has announced its latest round of movies that the state selected to receive film tax credits from the state’s incentives program. The four studio and five independent titles include Russo brothers action-thriller Gray Man, Jessica Chastain drama Losing Clementine, Octavia Spencer sci-fi movie Invasion, and a currently untitled Jordan Peele movie.

Other productions include Phil Lord and Chris Miller horror movie Sweetwater, which centers around the first African American basketball players in the NBA.

Gray Man is a major production starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. The Netflix project is a huge win for California, which lost many major productions to Georgia and the United Kingdom, who both provide more lucrative film tax credits. The movie is expected to bring $102 million in wages and other qualified expenditures.

Nine films are set to generate $284 million in state expenditures. They are expected to hire 1,340 crew, 342 cast members, and 14,397 background actors and stand-ins over the course of 374 filming days in California.

Independent projects include Losing Clementine, Nightfall, and Sweetwater and were in the under $10 million-and-under qualified spending category, which saves funds specifically for lower-budget indie films.

“After announcing two relocating TV series earlier this month, our new tax credit program continues to get off to a great start with today’s list of film projects,” said California film commission executive director Colleen Bell. “Production activity is ramping back up in California amid COVID-19 with safety remaining a top priority, and Program 3.0 is attracting the kind of big-budget films that will generate a considerable amount of jobs and in-state spending.”

Here’s the full list of movies filming in California this Fall 2020

  1. Faster, Cheaper, Better
  2. Gray Man
  3. Invasion
  4. Losing Clementine
  5. Nightfall
  6. Sweetwater
  7. Untitled DOR
  8. Untitled Jimmy Warden Project
  9. Untitled Jordan Peele Project
Here are the 12 movies set to film in California this summer 2020.

Among those selected include Universal Pictures’ sequel ‘Half Baked 2’, Sylvester Stallone and Michael Bay’s ‘Little America, Fox’s ‘Lady of the House’, and Amazon’s Untitled Project starring Cate Blanchett and written by Aaron Sorkin. Other projects include a transgender teen drama ‘Moonshadow’ and Asian family drama series ‘Ashes to Oceans’.

The Hollywood Reporter reports over 50 projects applied for film tax credits from March 9th to March 13th. Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic delayed the announcement several months but, the news illustrates Hollywood is ready to get back to work.

The California Film Commission has set aside $40.2 million in film tax credit for the 12 films. Together, a 12 movies are expected to generate $225 million in qualified spendings in California. In addition, the projects should hire approximately 1,745 crew, 543 cast members, and 14,668 background actors and stand-ins. They will also generate significant postproduction jobs for California talents.

“Program 2.0 has accomplished precisely what it was designed to do, from creating high-wage jobs to encouraging more out-of-zone production,” said California Film Commission executive director Colleen Bell. “As the industry begins to rebound from COVID-19, the launch of Program 3.0 will help continue to ensure that California provides an unparalleled value.”

“As a project with many trans and other gender non-confirming creative team members, cast and crew, it was essential for Moonshadow production to be based in a progressive state,” EP Jude Harris said Monday. “California’s tax credit program is making it possible for us to generate jobs and production spending here at home while working in a supportive environment.”

Over the last five years, the new program has given film tax credits to 243 movies and projects and generated an estimated $11 billion in overall spending, including $4 billion in qualified wages to below-the-line employees and $3.7 billion to state companies.

Coronavirus: Hollywood Unions Publish Guidelines for Productions

Hollywood unions publish safety guidelines for TV shows and films

Hollywood union’s released a detailed Coronavirus COVID-19 guidelines for TV and films expected to follow in the next few months as the film industry returns to work after the pandemic related shutdown.

In the published report, titled “The Safe Way Forward,”  by the Directors Guild of America, SAG-AFTRA, IATSE, and the Teamsters, the unions have a list of requirements productions must follow that want to start filming again. These restrictions should last until there is a vaccine for COVID-19 or other medical breakthroughs, which would reduce fears of the Coronavirus pandemic.

A new on-set role of health safety supervisor will oversee the implementation of the guidelines. In addition, frequent testing will be required, creating of zones to provide protection to cast and crew who cannot social distance or wear protective equipment.

The new framework is expected to be implemented nationally but, according to the Los Angeles Times, it could take weeks before film production resumes following the release of these new guidelines.

Some of the guidelines and restrictions include the following:

  • Dedicated Hygiene Crew
  • Security Unit to keep outsiders from entering who do not have testing clearance
  • Consistent monitoring
  • No visitors
  • Background performers need larger holding areas

In regards to testing, the paper says “We believe strategic testing for the presence of COVID-19 is critical for a safe return to work. Without such testing, the entire cast and crew would be asked to work each day in an environment of unknown risk; a single confirmed case would lead to a quarantining of all who came into close contact with that person. This could potentially lead to shooting delays, and—should that person be a key actor/performer or director—to production shutdowns, not to mention the real possibility of illness and death. Our belief in regular, consistent testing is based on the best available public health science. ”

“People in the industry can take great comfort from the report,” said Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s chief operating officer and general counsel, who is leading the union’s safety and reopening initiative, in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. “What’s laid out here from our unions, representing the vast majority of people directly involved in production, are guidelines that we believe can be — and will be — practically implemented.”

It begs the question – how will producers handle the increased cost to film with these new guidelines? As we previously reported, background actors are concerned their careers will get killed off due to the Coronavirus guidelines, which encourage limiting hiring background actors and creating more elaborate facilities to keep talent.

Sande Alessi is the extras casting director from many hit movies including the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and ‘Argo’. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she says, “Nobody wants what I’m selling,” she says. “Nobody wants human beings.”

Last week, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo released production guidelines following the March Coronavirus COVID-19 shutdown. The new production rules include frequent testing, stricter cleaning procedures, and social distancing. The guidelines released on the New York Governor’s website, reveals a long list of production safety precautions that are both mandatory and recommended.

Marvel TV Series ‘Ms. Marvel’ to Start Shooting in Atlanta This August (Report)

0

Disney and Marvel’s ‘Ms. Marvel’ TV series will reportedly start shooting in Atlanta, Georgia this August 2020.

If all goes well with Georgia’s reopening process amid the Coronavirus Pandemic, Disney’s ‘Ms. Marvel’s TV series will start production this August 2020.

According to reports, the show will center around Marvel’s first Muslim superhero. Ms. Marvel is a comic hero and has existed since 1976 with the character Carol Danvers. The latest version and the one the show will focus on is a Muslim teenager named Pamela Khan. Khan became Marvel’s first Muslim character to lead in her own comic book series. Her identity is Pakistani American and she lives in a religious family in New Jersey. The show will reportedly center around her trying to find her identity and her powers are described as having the ability to stretch and change shape. This series is supposed to be a series for Disney+.

The series was supposed to film this April 6 in Atlanta. However, due to the Coronavirus outbreak, which started in March, production has been delayed.

In relevant news, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson‘s ‘Black Adam‘ is set to film this August 2020 in Atlanta, Georgia. While doing a Q&A on Instagram Live, the actor said that the movie will start production late summer and he cannot wait to start shooting because he has been training for the role. He also described “Black Adam” as his “passion project.”

“We plan on shooting probably at the end of summer now. Probably pushed maybe into August, maybe September. But I cannot wait for that movie. I have been training so hard for months, and months. That is a passion project for me. It is a role that I hold dear and near to my DNA,” Johnson said.

Cop TV Shows Impact Real-World Policing, Study Finds

Study finds cop TV shows affect real-world policing.

In January 2020, a study by Color of Change the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center, “Normalizing Injustice: The Dangerous Misrepresentations That Define Television’s Scripted Crime Genre,” aimed to determine the impact of this mass representation of law enforcement on television. Analyzing 353 episodes from 26 crime shows from the 2017–18 season, the study provides a detailed look at the ways the content creators behind these shows are creating cop propaganda.

In fall 2019, 21 of the 34 prime-time dramas were cop shows. Most of these shows include wrongful actions done by law enforcement including “routine, harmless, or necessary—or even noble,” Color of Change found. Moreover, 18 of the 26 shows justified misconduct of police officers so audiences would support them.

“The narratives that are coming out of Hollywood—for profit—are fueling some of the incentives that we’re seeing in our country, fueling people’s understanding of what they think justice should look like. It also makes it harder for us to push back against injustice,” said Rashad Robinson, president of Color of Change. “Police on these shows are constantly doing bad things but are either being rewarded or are able to give a speech about why they had to do it.”

Even shows that present police brutality or misconduct was depicted as good to the audience. The study found in 353 episodes, there were only six examples of police officials charged with crimes due to their misconduct.

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ rewrites season 8 episodes after the Black Lives Matter movement.

Following the killing of George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter movement has gained momentum and is changing not only the workplace but Hollywood itself.

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ centers around a diverse group of characters who work for the New York Police Department in Brooklyn. The comedic show rarely touches on the problematic parts of police and law enforcement. However, that is all about to change.

NBC renewed the Golden Globe Award-winning series for an 8th season last November. The show wrapped its 7th season in April and was preparing for Season 8 when George Floyd’s killing was broadcast worldwide and protests erupted around the world. The show had to deal with the message of the show, which studies have shown affect real-world policing.

One of the show’s leading actors, Terry Crews, said on social media the showrunner Dan Groor “had four [new] episodes all ready to go and they just threw them in the trash. We have to start over. Right now we don’t know which direction it’s going to go in.”

Crews added that the cast has had “a lot of somber talks about it and deep conversations and we hope through this we’re going to make something that will be truly groundbreaking this year. We have an opportunity here, and we plan to use it in the best way possible.”

Margot Robbie to Star in Stand-alone Disney ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Movie

Margot Robbie is going to star in the upcoming stand-alone ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie.

According to reports, the Australian actress is said to be female-led set in the same universe of the hit Johnny Depp franchise. Sources report that it will be completely separate from the previously announced ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ reboot, which is developed by Ted Elliott and Craig Mazin.

Details for the movie have not been released, the project will be written by Christina Hodson. Hodson recently wrote the ‘Suicide Squad’ spinoff starring Margot Robbie in ‘Birds of Prey’.

‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ is one of the biggest film franchises of all time. The movie series grossed over $4.5 billion across five feature films. However, the franchise was led by Johnny Depp and over the years the return on investment has decreased. In fact, the fifth movie ‘Dead Men Tell No Tales’ came in with the second-lowest box office of the series with $795 million worldwide. The studio is working on creating new ways to reboot the brand with new stories and talent.

Voice Actors Leave ‘Family Guy’ and ‘Simpsons’ Roles, “Persons of Color Should Play Characters of Color”

Voice actors exit ‘Family Guy‘ and ‘Simpsons‘ roles as the movement to replace white voice actors who play non-white characters continues to grow.

Following the killing of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter Movement, several white actors have announced they would no longer be voicing animated characters of color. As we recently reported, Jenny Slate announced she will leave the series ‘Big Mouth’ and now Mike Henry has exited from his Cleveland Brown character on ‘Family Guy’.

Via Twitter, Herny explained his exit from his decades-long role saying, “It’s been an honor to play Cleveland on Family Guy for 20 years. I love this character, but persons of color should play characters of color.” The voice actor began voicing the Black character in 1999 and even led the spinoff series ‘The Cleveland Show’ from 2009 to 2013.

The Simpsons

In relevant news, ‘The Simpsons’ will no longer use white actors to voice non-white characters. “Moving forward, The Simpsons will no longer have white actors voice non-white characters,” Fox spokesman Les Eisner said in a statement Friday.

For the past thirty years, the show has used White actors to play several non-white characters including Harry Shearer as Dr. Julius Hibbert and Hank Azaria as Apu Nahasapeemapetilon.

White actresses call for animated shows to hire Black actors to play Black characters.

Actresses Kristen Bell and Jenny Slate announced Wednesday they will no longer voice mixed-race characters on animated series, so those roles can be given to Black actors.

Jenny Slate first created the shift when she announced she would stop voicing Missy Foreman-Greenwald, the character she’s played on Netflix’s ‘Big Mouth’ since the show debuted on Netflix in 2017. The actress said she previously told her self that she was allowed to play the character because her mother was Jewish and white, just like her own mother. She realized that Black characters should be played by Black actors.

Bell plays Molly on Apple TV+’s new series ‘Central Park’. In a statement from the show, she said the “entire creative team recognizes that the casting of Molly is an opportunity to get representation right — to cast a Black or mixed race actress and give Molly a voice that resonates with all of the nuance and experiences of the character as we’ve drawn her.” They added Bell would continue to be part of the show.

Bell released her own statement saying she showed a “lack of awareness of my pervasive privilege” and considered the casting “wrong”.

More recently, Actress Alison Brie has stated regret providing the voice for the Vietnamese American character Diane Nguyen in the Netflix series “BoJack Horseman,” which finished filming this year.

In a statement posted to Instagram on Friday, Brie said that, “in hindsight,” she wishes she did not voice the character and that Diane could’ve been reserved for a person of color.

“I now understand that people of color should always voice people of color,” Brie wrote. “We missed a great opportunity to represent the Vietnamese-American community accurately and respectfully, and for that I am truly sorry. I applaud all those who stepped away from their voiceover roles in recent days. I have learned a lot from them.”

Sci-Fi Movie Casts Artificial Intelligent Robot Actress For The Lead Role

An upcoming sci-fi feature film with a budget estimated at $70 million called ‘b’ has reportedly cast its lead role and it’s an artificially intelligent robot named Erica.

According to reports, Bandit Capital Media whose financed productions include ‘To The Bone’ and ‘Loving Vincent’ is partnering with Happy Moon Production and New York’s 10Ten Media to finance the upcoming sci-fi movie. ‘b’s storyline centers around a scientist who discovers the program he created to perfect human DNA is dangerous and ultimately helps the A.I. woman, Erica escape.

Hiroshi Ishiguro and Kohei Ogawa made Erica in real life and have enabled her to not only act, but understand the principles of method acting. The film is written by Eric Pham, Tarek Zohdy, and Sam Khoze. “In other methods of acting, actors involve their own life experiences in the role,” says Khoze. “But Erica has no life experiences. She was created from scratch to play the role. We had to simulate her motions and emotions through one-on-one sessions, such as controlling the speed of her movements, talking through her feelings, and coaching character development and body language.”

b’ started filming in 2019 in Japan and the movie is expected to continue to film in Europe in June 2021. The director of b and the robot’s human co-star have yet to be confirmed.

In relevant news, do you have a movie idea? Netflix is now looking for aspiring writers.

Imagine Impact from Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s production company, is looking for submissions as part of their deal with Netflix. The open submissions are looking to identify and help develop feature film ideas in four different genres, over the next year. The first four genre-specific application windows open Wednesday. The first round of projects is considered “large scale action-adventure movies for all audiences.” Applications will be accepted now until July 6th.
