Shailene Woodley shares how she approaches acting and what she’s learned by working with professionals.
Shailene Woodley has appeared in several popular films such as ‘The Spectacular Now’ and ‘The Fault in Our Stars.’ She also worked on TV with the HBO hit drama ‘Big Little Lies.’ Her most recent movie is the romance drama ‘Endings, Beginnings,’ which was set to hit theaters in May but released digitally due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a way to promote the project, Woodley was interviewed by her co-star, Sebastian Stan, for Interview magazine. Woodley opened up on her process to choose a project and what she learned from working with other actors.
Woodley says her decision to take a project comes down to her feeling after reading a script. She says, “If I’m reading a story and I have butterflies in my stomach, I’m in. If I don’t, I’m not. There have been a few times when incredible opportunities have come around, and I have not had that gut reaction, and everyone around me has said, ‘You have to do this movie because it’s this director or it’s this actor.’ But I haven’t had that gut reaction, so I passed.”

Nicole [Kidman] is very similar. They know inside and out who their characters are. That must come from experience. When you work with people who are better than you, or who you admire, you show up differently to set. And I have to say, I just f—ing love working with professionals. Whether you’re someone who’s been on one movie set or you’re Meryl Steep, that doesn’t matter to me. What matters is your sense of adoration and passion for the craft of acting. I get frustrated when I work with people who don’t seem to appreciate the gift that we’re given as actors to be able to express ourselves in this way. I just finished working with Jodie Foster, and there is no one on this planet like her.”
“I haven’t spoken much about this yet publicly, and I will take one day, but I was very, very sick in my early 20s. While I was doing the ‘Divergent’ movies and working hard, I also was struggling with a deeply personal, very scary physical situation,” she said. “Because of that, I said no to a lot of opportunities because I needed to get better, and those jobs ended up going to peers of mine who I love. They went on to a lot of success, but there was a mix of people saying, ‘You shouldn’t have let that go!’ or ‘You shouldn’t have been sick!’”
Kumail Nanjiani reveals why he refuses to do a heavy accent as a punchline in a joke and what movie role he lost due to it.
Kumail Nanjiani is an Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and actor. He has achieved what very few actors including Pakistani born actors have done in Hollywood. However, like many non-white actors, Nanjiani faced many auditions where casting directors wanted to use his accent as a joke in comedies. In an interview with Variety, Nanjiani opens up on why he eventually refused to do any accent as a punchline in a joke and even turned down a huge acting job for a movie, which became a “hugely successful” hit.
Nanjiani reveals there are some roles, which would require him to have an accent and that made him feel uncomfortable playing an accent that would later be poked fun at. He explains, “I have a Pakistani accent, but they would be like, ‘Could you make it funnier? Lean in a little bit.’ And at some point, I decided I just wasn’t going to do that. There are certain parts that require a thicker Pakistani or Indian accent, and that’s totally fine, but I just didn’t want the comedy to just be coming from someone exaggerating their accent.”
Nanjiani recalls one film, in particular, he chose not to take because it would require him to have a heavy accent. Variety suggests it was for the role of Dopinder in ‘Deadpool’. He says, “So there was a really, really big movie, actually, that I auditioned for, and I was a taxi driver, and the director was like, ‘Hey, could you play up the accent a little bit?’ And I was like, ‘I’m sorry, I won’t.’ And then the guy felt really bad. And I was like, ‘No, it’s fine. I’m just not going to do it. If that’s what you want, I’m not your guy.’ And then that movie was hugely successful.”
Nanjiani says, “Still, I don’t regret it.” Nanjiani will star in his own comic book movie, ‘The Eternals’, which is set for release on February 2021.
One interesting part of the roundtable focused on the actors discussing Black pain as an actor. Whether if it’s portraying a slave or police brutality, the actors discussed the difficulties surrounding accepting those roles and being responsible for broadcasting Black suffering.
According to CNBC, the Commerce Department announced it will ban U.S. business transactions with China-owned social media applications TikTok and WeChat on Sunday. Starting Sunday, there will be a full ban on WeChat starting on Sunday and a ban on updates and maintenance to the TikTok app. TikTok has a November 12 deadline before companies are banned from providing internet services for the app, which could give Oracle more time to land a deal with TikTok to satisfy President Trump’s demands.
“At the President’s direction, we have taken significant action to combat China’s malicious collection of American citizens’ personal data, while promoting our national values, democratic rules-based norms, and aggressive enforcement of U.S. laws and regulations.” Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said in the announcement.
The decision to essentially shut down TikTok is part of Trump’s original executive order from August 6, which gave TikTok 45 days to sell its U.S. business to an American company or face a ban in America. The end of the 45-day period is this Sunday. Trump’s executive order listed national security concerns over the Chinese government’s access to user data in those apps to justify the ban.

(September 14, 2020) U.S. software giant Oracle now owns TikTok after the U.S. government forced the parent of the video-sharing company to sell its U.S. based company, or the app would be banned.
The software company beat Microsoft, whose bid to take over the American operations of the app was reportedly rejected. Deadline reports that analysts believe Oracle won the rights to the company because Oracle founder Larry Ellison is a supporter of President Donald Trump. The White House still has to sign off on the deal for it to take effect.
Founded by Chinese internet entrepreneur Zhang Yiming, TikTok is owned by ByteDance. TikTok has seen a ton of growth but has run into a conflict between the United States and China. President Donald Trump and his administration announced the video-sharing platform is a security threat. In fact, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other officials have repeatedly said it is being used to stealing user’s data.
Oracle is now TikTok’s “trusted tech partner” in the United States, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal, but the transaction will not be structured as a sale.
“ByteDance let us know today they would not be selling TikTok’s U.S. operations to Microsoft. We are confident our proposal would have been good for TikTok’s users while protecting national security interests,” Microsoft said in a statement Sunday evening. “To do this, we would have made significant changes to ensure the service met the highest standards for security, privacy, online safety, and combatting disinformation, and we made these principles clear in our August statement. We look forward to seeing how the service evolves in these important areas.”
As we previously reported, Trump issued an executive order, which demanded the sale of the company. Walmart joined with Microsoft for a bid in August.
TikTok filed a lawsuit against Trump’s executive order. As a result, TikTok revealed details behind their growth, including 100 million monthly active users. The company had doubled its users from 39.9 million last October to 91.9 million in June. Since January 2018, the site has increased more than 800% from 11.3 million users and nearly a billion users across 200 countries.
The deadline for a TikTok deal was September 20, according to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in a CNBC interview. Mnuchin said the Oral agreement includes a new U.S. headquarters for TikTok and thousands of new jobs.
“We did get a proposal over the weekend that includes Oracle as the trusted technology partner with Oracle making many representations for national security issues. There is also a commitment to creating TikTok global as a U.S.-headquartered company with 20,000 new jobs,” Mnuchin said. He CFIUS, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, will be reviewing the offer this week, “and then we will be making a recommendation to the President and review it with him.”
He decided not to reveal other details, but he and Oracle defined it as a partnership and not an acquisition of TikTok’s U.S. operations, which Microsoft was reportedly pursuing.
Oracle confirmed Secretary Mnuchin’s statement saying “that it is part of the proposal submitted by ByteDance to the Treasury Department over the weekend in which Oracle will serve as the trusted technology provider. Oracle has a 40-year track record providing secure, highly performant technology solutions.”
Walmart was also interested in a deal to acquire TikTok and still reportedly wants to be part of the partnership process. “Walmart continues to have an interest in a TikTok investment and continues discussions with ByteDance leadership and other interested parties. We know that any approved deal must satisfy all regulatory and national security concerns,” the company said in a statement Monday.
(Update: August 14, 2020) President Donald Trump has issued a new executive order, which sets a new 90-day deadline for ByteDance to sell its US TikTok business.
“There is credible evidence that leads me to believe that ByteDance … might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States,” Trump said in his order, issued Friday.
The new order updates the previous executive order issued last week. The previous order would force app stores to stop distributing TikTok if Bytedance did not sell the company in 45 days. The new longer deadline will provide time for the company to make a deal with another company.
Trump’s new order says ByteDance would destroy all copies of the data attached to United States users. It also most tell the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States when it is completed.
ByteDance issued a statement saying, “As we’ve said previously, TikTok is loved by 100 million Americans because it is a home for entertainment, self-expression, and connection. We’re committed to continuing to bring joy to families and meaningful careers to those who create on our platform for many years to come.”
This news comes after President Trump now reportedly has a profile on TikTok rival Triller.
The Verge reports President Donald Trump joined Triller, a rival video sharing app. Trump’s Triller account has 3,500 followers and his new video currently has over 590,000 views. The intro video features clips of the president and audio clips of him saying “I’m a professional at technology,” and “nobody can do it like me.”
Triller launched two years before TikTok, in 2015, and co-owner Ryan Kavanaugh told CNBC that the company sees itself as the “adult version” of TikTok, with content that’s “a little more risque.”
(Update: August 9, 2020) TikTok will reportedly sue the Trump administration over the White House’s executive order banning the app in the United States.
According to NPR, the lawsuit will claim the President overreach his constitutional rights because it failed to give the company an opportunity to respond. It will also claim the administration’s national security justification is baseless.
“It’s based on pure speculation and conjecture,” the source told NPR. “The order has no findings of fact, just reiterates rhetoric about China that has been kicking around.”
“The Administration is committed to protecting the American people from all cyber-related threats to critical infrastructure, public health and safety, and our economic and national security,” according to White House spokesman Judd Deere.
This news comes after a report suggesting Twitter is considering buying TikTok.
Twitter has reportedly had early talks with TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, according to the Wall Street Journal on Saturday. It is not clear whether the company’s CEO will pursue the deal, which would be for the video-sharing app’s operations in the United States.
Microsoft has been in early negotiations to acquire TikTok’s operations in the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand for several weeks and is considered the leader in any possible deal.
Twitter purchased a video-sharing app Vine after shutting it down a few years later.
(Original Post: August 7, 2020): Under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and the National Emergencies Act, the executive order states “the spread in the United States of mobile applications developed and owned by companies in the People’s Republic of China…continues to threaten the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States. At this time, action must be taken to address the threat posed by one mobile application, in particular, TikTok.”
WeChat, which is owned by China’s Tencent,is also included in the executive order for the banning of transactions. The prohibition of WeChat does not directly affect Americans, but TikTok is extremely popular with 80 million U.S. monthly TikTok users. ByteDance argues it has made efforts in making the company less associated with China, hiring staff from all over the world, and even storing its data outside of China. Still, the company cannot effectively remove its ties to China.

The only thing to save American TikTok users is for Microsoft to finalize its acquisition for the app and hopefully make the changes to address the national security concerns. Currently, TikTok users have just 45 days to use the app.
In relevant news, shares of Facebook closed up more than 6% higher on Thursday following the release of REELS, a new Instagram feature that appears as a direct clone of the popular TikTok app.
Reels is a short video feature that allows Instagram users to create content with overlaid audio and VR features. The feature first launched in Brazil in November 2019. On Wednesday, Instagram released Reels in the United States and other markets as part of the Instagram app.
TikTok has grown as a significant competitor to Facebook due to its growing popularity among U.S. teens and young adults. According to CNBC, TikTok claims more than 100 million monthly active users in the United States.

In a report by The Hollywood Reporter, the analytics firm Sensor Tower estimates people downloaded more than 100 million times in the United States. The UTA recently signed Brittany Tomlinson, whose August video showed her trying kombucha for the first time, and it had 1 million likes. Then the NFL announced a multiyear partnership with TikTok to offer game highlights and behind-the-scenes footage to users. Now, Will Smith is transitioning to TikTok after taking over Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. Will Smith has over 700 million fans.
Jay-Z‘s Roc Nation, an entertainment company, is partnering with Long Island University in Brooklyn to launch the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment.
The school located in Brooklyn, New York, will offer undergraduate degrees in music, music technology, entrepreneurship, and production and sports management to generate opportunities for aspiring creators and entrepreneurs.
Jay Z launched Roc Nation in 2008, and the company quickly established itself as a leading player in entertainment and sports representation.
Its list of clients includes Rihanna, Alicia Keys, DJ Khaled, J. Cole, Megan Thee Stallion, and Lil Uzi Vert. Also, Roc Nation partnered with the NFL and co-produced this year’s NFL Super Bowl halftime show with Shakira and Jennifer Lopez. Roc Nation Sports was launched in 2013 and now works with many athletes.
The new school will start enrolling students for this fall 2021, with 25% of the incoming freshmen class earning a Roc Nation Hope Scholarship, which allows them to graduate college without any student debt.
Roc Nation Hope Scholarship is given to those who are within good academic standing, need-based, and from New York.

The “Deadpool” actor announced plans on Friday for the Group Effort Initiative, which will recruit 10 to 20 trainees from Black, Indigenous, and other “marginalized communities” to work alongside experienced filmmakers on his next movie.
Reynolds says in a statement, “Making a film is a group effort, but for entirely too long that group has systemically excluded Black, Indigenous, people of color and several other marginalized communities. This is a global problem that will not be fixed overnight, but change can start locally and immediately.”

A movie version of the hit David Hasselhoff series is getting the movie treatment with the director of ‘Aquaman’ producing the project.
According to Variety, Spyglass Media will develop a feature film based on the NBC action series, which reached 90 episodes over the course of four seasons in the 80s. Hasselhoff starred as Michael Knight, an agent for the Foundation for Law and Government (FLAG), driving Knight Industries Two Thousand (KITT), an advanced Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.
Wan will produce the project through his production company, Atomic Monster. Judson Scott is executive producing and TJ Fixman is writing the screenplay.
In other movie news, the director of ‘Candyman’ Nia DaCosta will direct the sequel to ‘Captain Marvel’ for Marvel Studios. According to The Wrap, Nia DaCosta will direct the project with Megan McDonnell, who worked on ‘Wandavision’, writing the project. The first ‘Captain Marvel’ movie starred Brie Larson and made $1.1 billion worldwide at the box office. Details surrounding the equal have not been released. However, Marvel said at 2019 Comic-Con the movie will directly lead into the vents of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”

As the Disney-owned studio is set to release dozens of films over the next few years, Marvel will use both theaters and Disney+ as their platforms. They have a lot of new projects coming soon including Captain Marvel 2, which will showcase the arrival of a new superhero trio for the very first time.
Brie Larson will reprise her role in the upcoming sequel and she will be joining forces with Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris. While Kamala Khan’s storyline is still unknown, Monica Rambeau’s plot is becoming more and more interesting in the Disney+ streaming series WandaVision.
In a recent interview, Parris mentioned how she would like the character of Photon to expand in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to reports, Marvel Studios is now casting for a new role in the upcoming Captain Marvel 2 movie. According to the casting call, producers are looking for talent similar to Michael B. Jordan and John Boyega to play the supporting male role in the 2022 Captain Marvel 2 movie. The casting call is looking for a male in his mid 20’s but there are no more details at the moment. It is possible the casting call is purposely vague but considering the film and recent speculation, it is rumored the role is for Adam Brashear/Blue Marvel.
Adam Brashear has connections to both Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau in the comics. Brashear is a military veteran and electrical engineer with a Ph.D. in theoretical physics. Brashear was involved with Project Perseus, which had problems and led to him having extreme superpowers.
It is unlikely Michael B. Jordan and John Boyega will get the role, it is extremely common for casting directors to look for “types” for roles.
The director of ‘Candyman’ Nia DaCosta will direct the sequel to ‘Captain Marvel’ for Marvel Studios.
According to The Wrap, Nia DaCosta will direct the project with Megan McDonnell, who worked on ‘Wandavision’, writing the project.
The first ‘Captain Marvel’ movie starred Brie Larson and made $1.1 billion worldwide at the box office. Details surrounding the equal have not been released. However, Marvel said at 2019 Comic-Con the movie will directly lead into the vents of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”
‘Captain Marvel’ starred Larson as Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot who is recovered after a mysterious happenstance, which transformed her into a superhero. After landing back on Earth in the 1990s, Carol must save the planet with the help of Samuel L. Jackson’s character Nick Fury.
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige briefly touched on the sequel at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, “We didn’t even mention that we’re making Black Panther 2 and we didn’t mention that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is coming. We didn’t even have time to talk about Captain Marvel 2, by the way. I didn’t even have time to talk about the Fantastic Four. And there’s no time left to talk about mutants.”
FilmLA announced Wednesday since the local government gave permission to resume filming on June 15th, the film office received over 570 film permit applications from 422 different productions. Limited filming started as early as June 19th soon as after restrictions loosened.
Most of the projects filming in Los Angeles were related to the advertising industry. Other projects include photography and commercials. In addition, reality TV production also increased with TV and film production expected to resume as early as September 2020.

Variety reports the series is a sequel to the sitcom and is in development at Sony Pictures Television, with the show’s original stars including Tony Danza and Alyssa Milano.
Variety describes the show as follows, “The new show will take place 30 years after the events of the original series and be centered around a former major-league baseball player and retired housekeeper Tony Micelli (Danza) and his relationship with his daughter Samantha Micelli (Milano), who is now a single mother and living in the house in which the original series was set.”
The original show was on the air for eight seasons and had 196 episodes on ABC from 1984 to 1992. The series received 10 Emmy nominations and five Golden Globes.
This is just the latest classic sitcom to get a reboot. Recent sitcom reboots include “One Day at a Time,” “Full House,” “Murphy Brown,” “Will & Grace,” and “Roseanne”.
The new series is set 12000 before the original series and will focus on the very first Witcher and how the dangerous job started. While the details for the new show have not been released, the upcoming Netflix series is created by Declan de Barra and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, the latter of which works as the original Netflix series’ showrunner.
