Tyler Perry offers to help a couple come home from Mexico after hospital bill problems
Despite being a businessman, Tyler Perry has always found a way to give back. This time, Tyler Perry donated financial support to help a couple from Sandy Springs, Georgia, who said they’re being held hostage at a hospital in Mexico.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Stephen Johnson went into diabetic shock while he and his fiancé, Tori Austin, were on a Carnival cruise. He was treated by doctors in the port city of Progreso.
But hospital staffers would not let him leave without paying a massive $14,000 bill. Austin told the newspaper that the hospital administration refused to sign her fiancé’s release form without getting paid upfront.
Hospital staffers and local police reportedly stopped the couple from leaving the facility multiple times. One time, the hospital administrator forced them back into the hospital with a lid of a pulled off trash can, she said.
“It was three or four of them, and they just kept pushing me, and I had to hold on to the rail. I was going to start swinging and throwing and punching because I was scared,” Johnson told CBS News.
“I appreciate them saving my life, but they can’t hold me captive,” Johnson told the local CBS affiliate during an interview earlier this week. “That’s not right.”
The hospital accepts credit cards and private health insurance. Johnson did not have private insurance. The credit card limits were less than $14,000.
“We’ve never been in this situation before. We’re used to the United States, where if you don’t have insurance, they’ll bill you, and we can pay it,” Austin said. “It’s not that we’re trying to get out of paying the bill. We don’t have the money right now.”
Johnson never went on a cruise before and had no idea he even had diabetes before the incident.
On Friday, a spokeswoman for Centro Medico Americano hospital told the AJC that Johnson is not being held captive. Instead, he is still too sick to travel.
“He arrived in grave condition,” the spokeswoman said. “Aside from his kidney failure and dialysis, he also has other problems and had to be treated by the cardiologist and other specialists … Right now, he is not in a condition to even travel on a commercial plane. He would have to fly in an ambulance.”
Once the story went viral, representatives for Tyler Perry said he would cover the couple’s hospital bill and fly them home.
“He said, ‘I’m going to pay your bill, and I’m gonna bring you home,’” Johnson told CBS after receiving a phone call from the cross-dressing, chitlin circuit urban theater mastermind. “He is truly saving my life. He is rescuing me.”
“I owe him my life, and I hope to get to meet him when I get back to Atlanta because he deserved the biggest hug,” he added.
It is important to note; Tyler Perry went from being homeless to one of the biggest Hollywood influencers. Since then, he has always helped the underserved community. Earlier this year, Tyler Perry paid for the funeral of a mother of four who was shot and killed outside a bank near Atlanta. He also offered to cover the cost of the family’s rent for six months.
Tyler Perry is not only a filmmaker. He is a businessman. Not only is the director, writer, actor, and entrepreneur working on several TV shows and movies at Tyler Perry Studios, Perry will be making his Netflix debut with ‘A Fall From Grace.’
‘A Fall From Grace’ will set to hit the streaming platform on January 17th and stars Crystal Fox, Phylicia Rashad, Bresha Webb, Mehcad Brooks, Cicely Tyson, and Tyler Perry. The movie centers around Grace Waters (Crystal Fox), a woman heartbroken by her ex-husband’s affair, who finally finds new romance.
“My next movie, guys!!! This is an amazing thriller!!!” Perry captioned a poster for the film.
It appears Tyler Perry likes to work with actors he has worked with in the past. Fox has a role in Tyler Perry’s OWN series ‘The Haves and the Have Nots.’ Tyson worked with Perry in many movies, including his 2005 breakout movie ‘The Diary of a Mad Black Woman’ and in ‘Madea’s Family Reunion’ in 2006.
Mr. Perry is a busy man. In related news, Perry is teaming up with Nickelodeon for new kids and family live-action series starring 10-year-old rapper Young Dylan. The series is part of a massive deal with Viacom, where he is producing original series for BET Networks and other Viacom properties, with exclusive licensing rights on the TV shows and movies. Moreover, Tyler Perry Studios has a deal on the new streaming service BET+. Two new shows from Tyler Perry, including ‘The Oval’ and ‘Sistas,’ are now available on the platform.
Director Todd Phillips has reportedly worked out a deal to make another DC movie.
The ‘Joker’ movie was a hit for DC, director Todd Phillips and leading actor Joaquin Phoenix. Phillips, the same man who made ‘The Hangover’ trilogy, took a huge risk making a dark and scary comic book movie that features none of the classic storylines from Comic Book movies. Phillips has denied he’s working on a sequel, according to Forbes, DC has reportedly given him “proverbial permission to dabble with at least one more DC origin story.”
There are no details on who will be working on the project, or even if it would be another villain or possibly even a hero. Maybe he will do some alternate history version of The Penguin, where Penguin is stuck inside an Aquarium for years.
In related news, ‘Joker’ hit another major milestone. Worldwide the movie has grossed over $1.2 billion, which is impressive for a film that some thought would not work in the generation of Disney’s superhero franchise films.
Todd Phillips landed ad deal where he received a part of the gross profits, which means the NYU filmmaker has earned himself $100 million from the movie alone. It pays off to think outside of the box.
Following the news Andy Serkis will play Alfred in the upcoming Robert Pattinson movie, ‘The Batman’, director Matt Reeves continues to roll out new cast announcements through Twitter. On Friday, the director revealed John Turturro will play mob boss Carmine Falcone aka The Roman. Falcone first appeared in ‘The Batman: Year One’ in 1987 and in the comic books he takes over Gotham with the help of his crime family.
The confirmed list of actors for the upcoming movie includes Robert Pattinson as the lead, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon and Paul Dano as Riddler. Colin Farrell is currently in talks to play the Penguin.
Filming for ‘The Batman’ is set to start later this December and scheduled to hit theaters on June 25, 2021.
Who is John Turturro?
John Michael Turturro is an Italian American actor, writer and filmmaker known for his roles in the films Spike Lee’s ‘Do the Right Thing’, ‘Miller’s Crossing’, ‘Barton Fink’, ‘Quiz Show’, the critically-acclaimed ‘The Big Lebowski’, ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’ and the Transformers franchise.
In other related entertainment news, ‘Joker’ director Todd Phillips announces he is not planning on doing a sequel for ‘Joker’. The ‘Joker’ movie has crossed $1 billion at the box office.
A Michael Jackson biopic is coming soon from ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ producer Graham King.
Graham King and the Michael Jackson estate have landed a deal for the artist’s life and music rights to develop a movie based on the singer’s life. According to Deadline, the movie will not be a “sanitized rendering of Jackson’s life.”
Screenwriter John Logan from ‘Gladiator’ and ‘The Aviator’ will write the script. The duo previously worked on Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Aviator’.
The news of the movie comes after HBO’s recent Emmy-winning documentary ‘Leaving Neverland’. The Michael Jackson estate sued the network for $100 million for airing the documentary without their consent. Despite the controversy surrounding the singer, there still a huge audience for his music and his story.
Tyler Perry Studios will hold studio tours starting in 2020.
After the grand opening for Tyler Perry Studios, people from all over the world are interested in checking out the studio ran by Tyler Perry. Now, fans, aspiring filmmakers, actors, and talent will now have the chance.
Several major feature films have filmed at Tyler Perry Studios including Will Smith’s ‘Bad Boys For Life’ and Eddie Murphy’s ‘Coming To America’ sequel. In fact, the upcoming Aretha Franklin biopic, ‘Respect’ is now filming at the studio and the recent Democratic debate also filmed at Tyler Perry Studios.

Disney Channel digital open casting call for the aspiring kid and teen actors.
Disney Channel launches a digital open casting call for kids and teens as part of the company’s initiative to discover and develop aspiring actors.
The digital casting call will accept video auditions through Tuesday, December 31, 2019.
“In our ongoing efforts to reach a broader pool of talent across the U.S., our digital open casting call allows parents whose kids aspire to be actors the opportunity to submit their child’s audition right from where they live,” said Judy Taylor, SVP Casting and Talent Relations, Disney Channel. “This also gives Disney Channel a chance to potentially discover fresh, young and diverse talent who may not yet have agency representation.”
The actors must be able to play between ages 8 and 16, and all video auditions must be submitted via https://www.Disney.com/disneychannelcasting. Additional information is also available on the Disney website.
Robert Pattinson has been involved in some of the biggest Hollywood franchises in recent history. The actor sat down with Kristien Gijbels for the podcast HFPA In Conversationand shared how his earlier roles in films like Twilight and Harry Potter have shaped him since his ‘The Batman’ casting news.
“It’s funny because the secrecy of things is taken very seriously,” Robert shared about finding out the news on his way to Cannes Film Festival. “I just thought they’d all have thought I did it, but I can’t even get people to come to dinner with me, let alone be able to leak stuff to the press. I don’t even know my pin number.”
The breaking news also leaked during a bad time for the actor. Pattinson was busy promoting his new film ‘The Lighthouse’.
“It was weird as well because everyone just assumed it was true, and it wasn’t true at the time,” he shared. “It’s also annoying as well, because Lighthouse is this little movie, and you kind of don’t want to piss everyone off where they organize this whole press tour and then everyone asks you about something else…It was quite stressful.”
Robert Pattinson also discussed his time working on set of ‘Harry Potter’ and how he enjoyed it.
“It was a really nice environment on Harry Potter,” he shared. “Even compared to the movies I’ve done since, it was very protective. The way the kids were treated…In Harry Potter, they were at school and they were kind of doing work at the same time…It felt like a very friendly family environment.”
The actor recalled one good memory during one of his press tours. “It was amazing. Especially during that press tour,” he shared. “I remember going to Tokyo for the first time, and sitting in my room looking out over the city and being like, ‘How has this happened?’ I really like that movie…I wouldn’t be acting if it wasn’t for that.”
Robert Pattinson also discussed his audition for the movie ‘Twilight’. The actor recalled the audition process for the movie and how it changed his acting career. “I had gone to LA because I had been just sending tapes in London,” he shared. “I didn’t even have my own fancy video camera. I would use my parent’s old Sony handy-cam from the early ’90s…I sent tons and never got anything.”
Little did Pattinson know but his decision to move to LA was for the better. However, it did take a bad audition for him to learn how to improve his acting career.
“It was the scene when [Edward] had a guitar…my agent was like, ‘take your guitar into the audition,'” he shared. “I just walked in and they were like, ‘Oh. You brought a guitar. Do you want to play us a song,’ and I was like, ‘No. This is the worst decision I ever made.’ I was saying no and they were like, ‘You just brought a guitar into just to hold it? Why did you bring a guitar in?’ My entire confidence just s–t the bed. The audition was one of the worst auditions I did in my whole life. I remember calling my parents and saying, ‘I’m done, I can’t torture myself anymore,’ and the next day I got a Twilight audition.”
Following the success of Joker, Warner Bros. Pictures is reportedly looking to land Joaquin Phoenix for a new Joker trilogy series.
According to reports, the studios are said to be offering the actor $50 million to reprise his role for two more movies. Despite the movie previously being a standalone project, Phoenix is rumored to be interested in playing the Joker once again and is in active negotiations. Phoenix is also active in writing for the scripts for the potential sequels.
Warner Bros. Pictures also wants to put two sequels in the next four years with Joaquin Phoenix. Director Todd Phillips and producer Bradley Cooper are also considering returning for the trilogy.
According to the study, researchers investigated if people watching the ‘Joker’ movie had an impact on how people view others with mental illness. In the study, 84 participants complete a “28-item Prejudice Toward People With Mental Illness scale” before and after watching Joker.
“Joker was associated with higher levels of prejudice toward those with mental illness,” the study found. “Beyond prejudice, associating mental illness with violence may erode support for policies that we know to be beneficial for those with mental illness (e.g., integration into communities). Additionally, Joker may exacerbate self-stigma for those with a mental illness, leading to delays in help-seeking.”
Previously :
(January 3, 2020) ‘Joker‘ director, Todd Phillips, says he is open to making a sequel.
During Deadline’s recent ‘The Contenders New York event, ‘Joker’ director Todd Phillips said he was willing to create a sequel to the hit film.
“When a movie does $1 billion and cost $60 million to make, of course, it comes up,” he laughed. “But Joaquin and I haven’t really decided on it. We’re open. I mean, I’d love to work with him on anything, quite frankly. So who knows? But it would have to have a real thematic resonance the way this one did, ultimately being about childhood trauma and the lack of love, and the loss of empathy. All those things are really what made this movie work for us, so we’d have to have something that had an equal thematic resonance.”
This news comes after reports Warner Bros. approved a sequel, which Phillips refuted the rumors.
(Original Update: November 22, 2019) ‘Joker‘ director, Todd Phillips, shuts down rumors of a sequel.
On November 20th, the news went viral that a ‘Joker’ sequel was officially in development. A Hollywood Reporter report said ‘Joker’ director Todd Phillips received the rights to develop at least one more DC Comics origin story by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Then, on November 21st, multiple sources claimed that director Todd Phillips and co-writer Scott Silver have not signed a deal, negotiated, or even had a meeting to discuss a sequel to the movie.
Now, ‘Joker’ director spoke to IndieWire to clarify the rumors surrounding the sequel. The director confirmed that a sequel is not on the table, and the initial report “jumped the gun.”
“I can honestly say to you there was no meeting that ever happened on October 7, where I marched in,” he said. “First of all, if you know me and my career, that’s not my style. I made a huge comedy at Warner Bros., ‘The Hangover,’ and I didn’t suddenly become a comedy factory producer, like, oh, let’s just churn out movies. Bradley [Cooper] and I have a production company at Warners. I’ve been at Warners for 15, 16 years. We have two things in development at all times, not 40 things like some people. I’m not the kind of guy who goes marching in saying I want these 40 titles. I just don’t have the energy.”
Phillips also explained that he pitched Warner Bros. creating a new franchise. “When I pitched them ‘Joker,’ it wasn’t a movie, it was, let’s do a whole label. They shut that down quickly, and I get it. Who am I to walk in and start a label at a film studio? But they said, let’s do this one,” he clarified.
While the director clarified that he spoke with ‘JOker’ star Joaquin Phoenix about a sequel, there is no official contract between the studio and Phillips. Nor has he offered the lead actor to appear in a sequel. “While Joaquin and I have talked about it, and while touring the world with Warner Bros executives — going to Toronto, and Venice, and other places — of course, we’re sitting at dinner, and they’re saying, ‘So, have you thought about…?’,” he said. “But, talking about contracts, there’s not a contract for us to even write a sequel; we’ve never approached Joaquin to be in a sequel. Will that happen? Again, I just think the article was anticipatory at best.”
