Netflix’s user growth slows down amid the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic and growing streaming wars.
Netflix reported how many memberships were added in the last quarter. The report revealed 2.2 million new subscribers are now using the service, which is a drop from the same quarter last year when the streaming service can add 6.8 million new memberships. Overall, Netflix now has 195.2 million subscribers, which is 1 million less than what Wall Street analysts predicted.
Due to the lower than expected user growth, share prices for Netflix dropped. That said, 2020 is a great year for Netflix with huge subscriber growth over the last two quarters, mostly driven by people staying home due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, COVID-19 has led to a 70% stock increase.
Netflix still added more memberships in the first nine months of 2020 than it did all of 2019. Also, streaming service predicts another 6 million memberships will be added over the next three months.
The streaming business is just getting more and more competitive. As we previously reported, Quibi is shutting down after only 6 months. The short-form mobile video startup, led by founder Jeffrey Katzenberg and CEO Meg Whitman, called investors on Wednesday to tell them Quibi was shutting down. Previously, Quibi hired a restructuring firm, which provided a list of options to its board of directors. One of the proposals included Quibi closing their doors.
It is unclear what will happen to Netflix as more companies ramp up their streaming efforts. But, one thing is clear, we are in the middle of an intensely competitive subscription-streaming market and the massive amount of free video in apps like Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.
Universal Pictures revealed the “car film franchise” will end after two more movies, the 10th, and 11th in the franchise. Deadline reports, Justin Lin, will direct both movies.
The final two movies of Fast and Furious will have a “big story” unfold over the course of both movies. The movie will follow Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto on an adventure-filled battle.
Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, and Michelle Rodriguez will be joining Diesel on screen. Other likely cast members include Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Sung Kang.
No scheduled production start dates for Fast and Furious 10 or 11 were announced. Also, details about screenwriters and producers were not announced.
Fast and Furious franchise debuted in 2001 and became Universal’s highest-grossing movie franchise of all time, surpassing Jurassic Park. The next Fast and Furious movie was supposed to release earlier this year, but the release date was postponed to April 2021 due to the ongoing Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.
The franchise also created spin-offs, including Hobbs & Shaw, which stars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. A sequel is currently in development.
Only six months after launching, Quibi is shutting down after failing to find a buyer.

It’s important to note that Quibi raised $1.75 billion in funding from major media companies, including Disney, NBCUniversal, and WarnerMedia.
Quibi launched in April and marketed itself as a mobile-first streaming option. Wall Street Journal reported in September Katzenberg was looking at strategic options for Quibi, which included a potential sale. Quibi, which has 500,000 paying customers, pitched the company’s sale to Apple, WarnerMedia, and Facebook. According to The Information, Katzenberg also didn’t land programming rights to companies, including NBCUniversal and Facebook. Apparently, NBCUniversal was “put off by the fact that Quibi doesn’t own many of the shows it puts on its platform.”
Quibi does not own any of the premium content. The company spent upwards of $100,000 per minute. The company has seven-year licenses on short-form series. After two years, the content owners have the right to assemble the shows and distribute them elsewhere.
Quibi launched in April and marketed itself as a mobile-first streaming option. In 2018, the company was then called “New TV” and raised $1 billion in funding. Some of the company’s investors included Disney, NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Viacom (now ViacomCBS), AT&T’s WarnerMedia, Lionsgate, MGM, ITV, and Entertainment One. In March 2020, ahead of the April 6 debut, the company announced another $750 million in funding from existing and new investors.
At launch, Quibi had about 50 original titles, including shows featuring originals from Jennifer Lopez, Chrissy Teigen, Chance the Rapper, Kevin Hart, Liam Hemsworth, Sophie Turner, Lena Waithe, Nicole Richie, and Reese Witherspoon. Quibi also greenly other projects featuring top Hollywood content creators, including Steven Spielberg, Issa Rae, and the Kardashians.
Quibi costs $4.99 monthly with ads or $7.99 without ads. Quibi announced it sold its first-year ad investors with $150 million in commitments from top companies, including Google, P&G, and PepsiCo. The company landed a distribution deal with T-Mobile, which offers Quibi free for one year to subscribers on unlimited wireless family plans.
It is unclear what will happen to Quibi’s shows following the company’s shutdown. One thing is clear, Quibi failed to find a large customer base, in the middle of an intensely competitive subscription-streaming market and the massive amount of free video in apps like Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.
Earlier this week, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards announced the Ranch Film Studios in St. Bernard Parish will expand film production through the Louisiana Entertainment Job Creation Program.
What is the Ranch Film Studios?
The Ranch Film Studios provides production services, facilities, offices, and sound stages for motion picture production. The studio has hosted the production of major motion pictures, including Bill & Ted Face the Music and Terminator Genisys, and television series, such as Hulu’s The First and the new Fox program Filthy Rich.
The Ranch Film Studios Jobs
As part of the studio’s expansion, the company will create 11 new permanent jobs, with an average salary of $51,818 plus benefits. Louisiana Economic Development expects the company’s growth to lead to eight new indirect jobs, a total of 19 new jobs for Louisiana’s film industry.
“Our Entertainment Job Creation Program encourages companies to invest in permanent jobs for motion picture production and other entertainment sectors in Louisiana,” Gov. Edwards said. “As production activity resumes on movie and TV projects, Louisiana remains well-positioned as an entertainment industry destination. Our talented industry workforce will benefit as we continue to create permanent, quality entertainment jobs in our state.”
The Ranch is a production studio on 24 acres of property, providing 220,000 square feet of the stage, 40,000 square feet of production office space, and flex space. The Ranch offers incentive packages to boost production budgets. Located in St. Bernard Parish, The Ranch has served as the production base for more than $700 million in film and TV productions.
What is the Louisiana Entertainment Job Creation Program?
In 2017 Louisiana Gov. Edwards signed into law the Entertainment Job Creation Program to encourage investment in permanent jobs for Louisiana residents interested in the entertainment industry. As Louisiana Economic Development explains, “For jobs paying $45,000 or more annually, the employer may claim a 15 percent payroll tax credit. That credit increases to 20 percent for new jobs paying more than $66,000 a year. A similar credit was established for music-related companies.”

Louisiana’s film tax credit was launched in 2002 and remained one of the biggest in the world. The film industry produces some of the biggest TV shows and movies globally, which generates hundreds of millions of dollars.

Toy Story 4 writer Stephany Folsom will write and executive produce the series with Christopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rogers, who will also work as co-showrunners.

While she is crazy smart and a bit of a math whiz, her biggest fear is not living up to her genius and being discovered as a total fraud. Tiffany is a bit lonely as she doesn’t have many friends and overcompensates by trying to be an expert in everything, making her the first paper girl to take Erin under her wing to show her the ropes on her first day….SERIES REGULAR
Mac Coyle – Character portrayed is a female, 11-14 to play 12. The original Paper Girl, she tears through the streets on her BMX, a cigarette tucked behind her ear. Raised in an abusive home, she inherited the paper route from her older brother who taught her everything she knows, including how to smoke and win a fight by playing dirty. She’s learned how to survive the hard way. Her toughness is the only tool she has to deal with any threats that come her way…..SERIES REGULAR
KJ Brandman – Character portrayed is a female, 11-14 to play 12. A good foot taller than the rest of the girls. She’s from the wealthiest family in town. Her mother would love for her to be a good little girl that likes dresses and pink. Unfortunately, KJ has never liked any of those things. She likes sports, and finds field hockey is a good place to work out all the frustrations she can’t fully articulate. She’s guarded, protecting a sensitive nature, and would love nothing more than to feel comfortable and accepted in her own skin….SERIES REGULAR
