SYNOPSIS:

Middle school is the new high school. The life of a preteen girl is tough. You’re 12 going on 13, while everyone else in the class seems like they’re turning 20. Everyone else is trendy, sophisticated, and well…popular. This is a story of two girls hilarious struggles to make it through these formative years, where every day is awkward and the most important day of their lives (!!). While the title, Popularity Papers, may suggest a show about how to become popular, at the heart of it this series is about discovering your authentic self and not trying to be someone else just to fit in. It captures the real challenges of being a tween girl and disarms them with humor, love, and friendship. It’s a show that proves failure is an option, humiliation is good for a laugh and middle school is survivable.

Lydia and Julie are best friends on the hunt for answers to history’s question: How does someone become popular? Through pragmatic (and not-so-pragmatic) testing and social experimentation, they’ll figure out what it really means to be popular and finally get answers to questions like, do you really need to ditch your real friends to become popular? Should you quit the things you’ll love just because they’re considered “uncool”

ROLE 1:

[LYDIA GOLDBLATT] Female. 11-14 (If talent are 11, they MUST BE 12 by June in order to be considered. If talent are older than 12 they must look 12).

Lydia is energy personified, an EXTRA-extrovert. She’s confident and unabashedly goes for what she wants – and there’s no stopping her. Even if that means making a fool of herself. Sure, potential humiliation and failure cut her to the core – BUT she always manages to get right back up again. Lydia and her best friend in the universe Julie are, if we’re honest, at the fringes of the social hierarchy and have been for their entire lives. As they enter middle school, they have taken up a scientific quest to figure out what makes the popular kids popular. As self-assured as she is, Lydia also has a vulnerable side. While she claims she’s doing the research for science, there’s part of her that secretly hopes she’ll crack the popularity code and get to finally BE popular and feel a sense of importance –
something she hasn’t felt since her parents divorced. Lydia’s biggest flaw is getting carried away and stuck in her own little world, without taking into account everyone else’s feelings – but at the end of the day, she has the biggest heart, truly cares about her friends and classmates and will always do the right thing.

*If talent can sing that is a bonus, but not a requirement*

TALENT WILL BE UNDER A THREE-YEAR OPTION

ROLE 2:

[JULIE GRAHAM-CHANG] Female. 11- 14 (If talent are 11, they MUST BE 12 by June in order to be considered. If talent are older than 12 they must look 12).
A natural artist, Julie is happiest when she’s drawing and hanging out with her best friend Lydia. Julie’s need for attention on a scale of 1-10 is 0. She’s inhibited, cautious, fearful, and VERY conflict-adverse. She’s the “sensible” brakes to Lydia’s “impulsive” accelerator and is often the voice of reason/protest when it comes to Lydia’s antics. That’s not to say she can’t be convinced – or doesn’t secretly have the absolute time of her life while on these adventures. Underneath Julie’s layer of shyness is a witty and quirky girl with strong opinions – she just doesn’t share them with anyone who isn’t Lydia. Unlike Lydia, Julie doesn’t need to be popular to feel validated; in fact, she thinks the whole thing is just a giant hoax, a social construct that causes anxiety in her peers. It’s Julie’s mission to use her and Lydia’s research to deconstruct popularity, free all middle schoolers from worrying about their “status” and let them be just kids again. Especially Lydia, when she starts getting carried away. There’s nothing Julie wouldn’t do for her best friend – loyalty makes Julie’s world go round and Lydia feels the same.

TALENT WILL BE UNDER A THREE-YEAR OPTION
