Overview

Nox Sky is hiring a Director of Photography/Videographer to work with our Producer to lead our Los Angeles, CA, film production team. 

Nox Sky works with professional sports teams to create ongoing short-form documentary films published on the Nox Sky platform. The Nox Sky platform is integrated into team mobile apps and web properties, where the films are published and syndicated on other social video platforms. The platform allows for fan engagement in film series featuring one or more team players and team organization members. 

Nox Sky’s film production team is based in Los Angeles, CA.

Roles and Responsibilities 

Pre-Production

The DP (Director of Photography) will work closely in pre-production with the Producer, developing relationships with the sports teams, the individuals in the organization, and the athletes, while assisting with story writing, production planning, and navigating the unique personalities of athletes we will film.

  • Meet with teams, athletes, marketing/pr departments with the producer for understanding and alignment of goals
  • Work with the producer in crafting story arcs, screenwriting, and creative direction
  • Work with the producer on logistics and scheduling for all future production
  • Build relationships with the teams’ individuals and internal departments

Production

The DP will work with the producer to ensure a smooth start-to-finish production process. The DP will set up and prepare all equipment, operate the camera, and help the producer direct lean production teams.

  • Execute planned logistics and production
  • Operate and record the film
  • Work with a crew to assist with any other equipment (audio, lighting)
  • Be sensitive and aware of the unique individuals that are being filmed
  • Maintain a safe environment and prioritize the comfort and interest of the athletes being filmed
  • Utilize industry best practices in filming, security, and redundancies

Post Production

The DP will work closely with the producer to do initial video editing and color grading and, for specialty needs, will work with a video editor to execute the vision.

  • Basic video editing, color grading, and sound/music editing
  • Work with the Producer on iterating on the video editing
  • If specialty video editing is needed, ensure prompt and proper asset delivery to the video editor
  • Work with Producer to review and provide feedback to the video editor

Innovation

One of the main focuses of the DP will be innovating on the production of our unique short documentary films, by breaking the rules of traditional crew, equipment, and production setups, by utilizing cutting-edge equipment and methods to find a sweet spot that we will need to succeed in the long-term.

  • Work on utilizing different tools to reduce the overhead of crew and equipment
  • Proactively test, try, and experiment with technology, equipment, and processes to discover new and unprecedented ways of creating highly engaging films.
  • Maintain clear goals of reducing footprint during production, furthering the ability to be more unobtrusive, and keeping a pulse on how we can constantly iterate and be better.

The producer will be located in the Greater Los Angeles, California area, able to travel to meet with teams, travel with the teams, and be on-location for shoots. 

Requirements

  • Experience in camera operation, videography, audio, lighting
  • Experience as a director of photography and basic video editing
  • Expertise in documentary-style filmmaking
  • Expertise and enthusiasm for maintaining strong relationships and communication with organization counterparts
  • Experience with logistics, planning, and pre-production of shoots
  • Experience with all asset organization, storage, and privacy/security best practices for film storage and organization
  • Familiarity with modern filmmaking equipment and systems
  • Interest and understanding of competitive and professional sports, including soccer, golf, basketball, tennis, and more
  • Able to travel around the Greater Los Angeles area, domestically and occasionally, internationally
  • Open-minded, eager to learn, and maintain a solid commitment to adding positivity to local communities and the world
  • Interest and familiarity with issues around race, gender, background, and culture
