Three Huge Screenwriting Competitions You Need To Know

Date:

Are you an aspiring screenwriter? Here are three major screenwriting competitions you should know.

Screenwriting competitions are a great way to get your foot in the door of the film industry if you’re an aspiring writer. Case in point, Evan Daughterty with the help of Script Pipeline took his winning script “Snow White & The Huntsman” to a manager and the project later sold to Universal for $3 million.

Screenwriting Competitions

  1. Austin Film Festival
Austin Film Festival is one of the most popular screenwriting competitions out there. Founded in 1994, the film festival focuses on the art of writing, developing, and filmmaking ideas. Writers have the ability to connect with other like-minded talents at fun networking events. Even writers who don’t make it to the finals have a “Second-Rounder” opportunity and discounts on festival badges. The deadline to apply is March 29.
  2. The Nicholl Fellowships
The Nicholl Fellowship is one of the biggest competitions. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Nicholl Fellowship started in 1986. The competition awards $35,000 in grants to a select nubmer of up-and-coming feature screenwriters. Winners will have the ability to connect with the Academy’s industry connections, which could arguably launch careers.
    The deadline is March 7.

  3. The Script Pipeline competition has been held for nearly two decades and has some of the biggest success stories. The grand prize winner, runner-up, and finalists all receive introductions to managers, agents, and development executives with scripts, invitations to industry events and help with script circulation.Script Pipeline’s early deadline is March 1st.
