The movie is based on the novel of the same name written by Margot Lee Shetterly. Shetterly’s father was a NASA scientists in Washington D.C. and notes that after WWII, federal agencies and defense contractors hired smart women to deal with the shortfall of male scientists. NASA did the same. While they confronted racism and Jim Crow laws in Virginia, these women became so important that NASA refused to launch until they signed off on calculations.
Hidden Figures will be directed by Ted Melfi. Melfi has been involved with several Hollywood blockbusters including Silver Linings Playbook, Shakespeare in Love and directed the critically acclaimed movies St. Vincent.
