Patty Jenkins Resurrects Star Wars Film, Rogue Squadron, to Honor her Late Father

Date:

Film director Patty Jenkins has recently hinted at her possible return to the Star Wars universe. In 2020, her slated Star Wars film, Rogue Squadron, was shelved due to her schedule conflicts with other projects, including the now-cancelled Wonder Woman 3. Though, in a recent interview, she indicated her continued intent to work on Rogue Squadron’s script.

Key Takeaways:

– Patty Jenkins might direct and write the Star Wars film, Rogue Squadron, initially announced in 2020.
– Jenkins expressed her admiration for the Star Wars franchise, sharing her dream of creating a fighter pilot movie.
– Disney and Lucasfilm haven’t provided any updated details about the Rogue Squadron since its removal last year.
– The cancellation of Wonder Woman 3, led by Jenkins, followed a restructuring of the DC superhero universe by the new co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Honoring Jenkins’ Late Father via the Fighter Pilot Film

During an interview with the Talking Pictures Podcast, Jenkins revealed that the setback on Wonder Woman 3 led her to revisit her deal with Lucasfilm.
“When that went away, Lucasfilm and I were like, oh, we gotta finish this deal,” Jenkins said. “So, I now owe a draft of Star Wars and so we will see what happens there.”

Her comments have sparked renewed excitement among Star Wars fans. Jenkins further expressed her admiration for the franchise, linking its metaphorical depth to historical events like World War II.

“It’s born out of how do you make a metaphor and talk in a metaphor, right?” she shared. Jenkins also highlighted her long-standing aspiration of creating a fighter pilot movie. This dream, deeply personal, was inspired by her late father, Capt. William T. Jenkins, a U.S. Air Force pilot who served during the Vietnam War.

Aiming to combine her love for high-speed thrill and the Star Wars universe, she wishes to honor her late father with what she hopes to be “the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time.”

Despite Jenkins’ enthusiasm, no official updates have been shared by Disney or Lucasfilm about Rogue Squadron since its removal from the 2022 schedule.

Wonder Woman 3 Underwent Unexpected Cancellation

Patty Jenkins’ was triumphant with her 2017 film Wonder Woman, featuring Gal Gadot as the DC superhero. The massive success of the film led to a sequel in 2020. Despite its poor box office performance, fan expectations for a third installment remained high. On the other hand, Wonder Woman 3 was canceled amidst the DC superhero universe’s restructuring by its new co-CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Jenkins clarified through a tweet that she didn’t walk away from the project but that it got terminated due to the changes within the DCU. Despite these setbacks, reports suggested that Gadot may reprise her role in Gunn’s DCU.

However, a recent report from Variety contradicted these rumors, stating that no cast member from Zack Snyder’s films, including Wonder Woman, will reprise their roles. On a different note, James Gunn announced a new project, Paradise Lost, following the formation of the Amazonian society on Paradise Island long before Princess Diana’s birth.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Wonder Woman 3 and Rogue Squadron, Patty Jenkins appears to be pushing forward with the same passion that has earned her accolades in her illustrious career. Her commitment to making a fighter pilot movie to honor her late father has warmed the hearts of her fans worldwide, leaving them eagerly awaiting her next venture.
