Domestic violence activists want people to boycott the new ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ movie in order to support brutalized women.
#50dollarsnot50shades is going viral on social media and is urging moviegoers to boycott “Fifty Shades of Grey” and use the money they would spend on tickets, popcorn and drinks to support a domestic violence shelter or agency.
“The money you would have spent on movie tickets and a babysitter or movie tickets, popcorn and drinks will go towards serving victims of abusive relationships like the one glamorized in the50 Shades series,” the #50dollarsnot50shades campaign says on its Facebook page. “Hollywood doesn’t need your money; abused women do.”
The campaign currently has over 4,000 likes on Facebook, and is backed by several anti-abuse organizations including the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, which has called the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie as a movie that grooms “a young girl for sadistic sex”.
The new campaign says “Fifty Shades of Grey” glamorizes violence against women.
From the Washington Times:
“Fifty Shades” makes “violence sexy” but doesn’t capture the grave dangers and consequences that can occur in real-life controlling, abusive relationships, said the National Center on Sexual Exploitation and its allies, London Abused Women’s Center and Stop Porn Culture.
Other alarming themes in the book are coercion, humiliation, degradation, stalking, isolation, manipulation, physical torture, intimidation, possessiveness, jealousy and emotional and physical abuse, they said.
The National Center on Sexual Exploitation might be right. According to research on readers of the “Fifty Shades of Grey”, the book is linked to unhealthy behaviors.
Young adult women who read “Fifty Shades of Grey” are more likely than nonreaders to exhibit signs of eating disorders and have a verbally abusive partner, finds a new study led by a Michigan State University researcher.
Further, women who read all three books in the blockbuster “Fifty Shades” erotic romance series are at increased risk of engaging in binge drinking and having multiple sex partners. [MSU]
