Netflix is fighting to stop people from viewing websites that stream illegal copies of ‘Orange is the New Black‘.
According to CNN Money, a typical search for the term “Orange the New Black Season 3” brings up several illegal versions of the award winning series, “Orange is the New Black”.
In fact, the legitimate link to Netflix (NFLX, Tech30) isn’t even the number one search result. That actually goes to some website called CouchTuner.eu.
That means Google and Yahoo consider an illegal streaming site registered in Sweden more relevant to your search than the real thing.
The results are similar on other top search sites. A pirate site beats Netflix on Yahoo (YHOO, Tech30)search. And while Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) Bing and DuckDuckGo show Netflix first, the illegal options are right below. [CNN Money]
In fact, Netflix is facing a Search Engine Optimization problem with Google. Search Engine Optimization or SEO, is the term used for ranking of websites on Google Search Results.

Based on Google’s search algorithm, websites are ranked and then listed based upon your search request. Illegal streaming websites uses “black hat” search engine optimization techniques to outsmart Google’s search algorithm therefore, making thousands of dollars serving ads for users interested in watching the latest episode of ‘Orange is the New Black’, for instance.
Currently, ‘Orange is the New Black’ was the fourth most-searched term on Google, according reports. In fact, Netflix announced that pirated content providers is the companies top competitor. If people continue to search for ‘Orange is the New Black’, then Netflix will continue to lose millions.
‘Orange is the New Black’ centers around the story of Piper Chapman, a woman in her thirties who is sentenced to fifteen months in prison after being convicted of a decade-old crime of transporting money for her drug-dealing girlfriend.
