CASTING SOUTH ASIAN TALENT FOR NEW LILLY SINGH MOVIE

We are looking for a:

  • Teen girl, a woman in her 40’s or 50’s and a woman over 60. No prior acting experience is required. This form is ONLY for unrepresented talent. If you have an agent, please ask them to submit you directly to casting.

Note: This is a coming of age story. All talent must be comfortable being in a rated R comedy with sexual content.

Dates: Late May until late June.

RATE: ACTRA IPA. Starts at $850/day for principal roles and $575/day for actor roles.

ROLES:

[VEENA] Female, late 40s or 50s, South Asian, she’s Maya’s low key attractive mother – first or second generation. She is horrified by her 14 year old American-born daughter’s wild ways and whisks her off to India. When Maya is 30, Veena accompanies Maya back to the U.S. and is vocal about her disappointment in Maya’s career path. She has a rapport with Maya that can skew more friend than mom at times, and at others can be quick to offer advice — or better yet, criticism. A past master of the guilt trip, she is hardest on herself, and has stayed resolutely single ever since her cheating husband left… until she meets her new & single neighbour. Although she has traditional values and the Kardashians scare her, she is not your typical strict, nagging mother. She is playful and sarcastic, but digs her claws in when needed. LEAD (1)

[YOUNG MAYA] Maya (Lilly Singh) seen at age 14, (talent MUST be at least 12 years old) 12-16, this feisty South Asian girl is a confident “smartass” who is as liberated and Americanized as they come, much to her old world mother Veena’s horror. When Young Maya is exposed in a compromising position with her boyfriend Sohan at a school concert, she’s shipped off to India for a more “disciplined” upbringing. Later, Young Maya meets her older self in a hallucinatory interaction in which Young Maya tells Maya that she’s an adult now, and needs to “unlearn” her sexual shame and do what’s right for her.SUPPORTING ROLE (1) Performer to bear a good resemblance to Lilly Singh

[NANI] 60s – 80s, South Asian, she’s Maya’s grandmother, an old school elder who is so aghast at Maya and Sohan’s display at the school concert that she persuades her daughter, Veena, to move back to India with Maya. A font of misinformation, Nani views sex as taboo, particularly where women are concerned — and she tries to pass along those views to the impressionable Maya. She has a tough but comedic vibe… PRINCIPAL, 3 scenes (1)
