Will Smith’s ‘Focus’ Opened Worse than ‘After Earth’ and ‘Seven Pounds’

Will Smith’s ‘Focus’ Opened Worse than ‘After Earth’ and ‘Seven Pounds’; Warner Brothers blames the weather for the lack of ticket sales.

Will Smith, who is typically called a “movie star” for bringing in millions of dollars to the box office, had his worst opening since his 2008 box office bomb, Seven Pounds with Focus.

According to reports, Focus earned only $19.1 million and Warner Bros. claims that the weather is to blame for the lack of ticket sales.

“This was a midrange-budgeted movie, and the strong result reflected that,” said Warner Bros. executive vp distribution Jeff Goldstein. “The severely inclement weather in the Midwest and the South played havoc at the box office.” [TheHollywoodReporter]

Not too many people seemed to enjoy the movie. The movie was rated 56% on RottenTomatoes and audiences gave it a B cinemascore.

Will Smith’s Hitch, debuted to 43.1 million in 2005. In addition, it looks as though the movie will make less money domestically than Will Smith’s other box office bomb, After Earth. I guess Will Smith can sit back and reminisce about the good times since his movie star status is beginning to fade. It may be time to take Will Smith off of a pedestal and put him next to other actors who used to be relevant 20 years ago.

Jada Pinkett Smith: I Enjoy Watching Will Smith’s Sex Scenes

0

Jada Pinkett Smith says she gets off on watching Will Smith’s sex scenes.

While walking the red carpet for the new movie Focus, the Hollywood A-list couple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith were asked how it feels to watch each other in love scenes with other actors.

Jada replied in an amazing fashion, “After 20 years… I actually, you know-” “-She a little freak like that,” Will pointed out. What can we say? Lady likes to watch.

“Unfortunately, he’s right. It’s kind of a nice voyeuristic way to see your man, but I am kind of weird in that way,” she continued. “That’s a whole other conversation.”

Will Smith, may not feel the same way, especially since his wife stars in the upcoming feature film, Magic Mike XXL.

“The difference was everybody’s naked in Jada’s movie. It’s just overkill. It’s like somebody needs to put some drawers on,” he told EXTRA (video at the link). “There’s so many famous people in Magic Mike 2. Everywhere I go there’s some man there who’s been in his drawers with my wife.”

‘Empire’ Co-Creator Reveals the Show is Based on Jay-Z’s Life

0

Empire co-creator confirms the show is based on the life of Jay-Z.

Earlier this week, the co-creator of the hit TV series Empire, Danny Strong, revealed hidden details about the hip-hop drama. The writer pointed out that in the beginning th show received a ton of backlash for promoting stereotypes but, Danny Strong noted that the main character, Lucious Lyon is based on the multi-millionaire Jay-Z.

Terrence Howard Empire

In the community a lot of folks felt like the images that were being portrayed [like] Terrence Howard’s character being an ex-dealer turned music mogul and that not being the blueprint of how young black kids can be successful. You gotta be a drug dealer to be a mogul type of thing.

There’s certainly some truth in that. The Jay Z story which very much inspired Lucious Lyon… certain elements of Lucious Lyon was that story. […] I view it as, the entire cast is African-American, we’re gonna have all different types of characters, and we’re just gonna tell good stories. We’re not gonna sit here and play defense or think that our show is a representation of black culture in its entirety. It’s just this story. For me, the story of people who have some sort of criminal past or a gangster past, is not individual to black culture. It’s individual to so many cultures in American society. Italian, Irish, Jewish, so to me this is an American Dream story.

The interview also points out some of the other potential casting choices including ncluding Monique, Wesley Snipes, and hilariously enough, Bill Cosby. In any case, this revelation partially explains the scene where Lucious plays a Jay song in his own club.

Netflix ‘The Get Down’ Nationwide Starring Roles Open Casting Call

0

Netflix is holding a nationwide casting call for the new series ‘The Get Down’

Video auditions for major speaking roles in the upcoming Netflix TV are now being accepted by casting directors.

The film producers are looking for talented actors, models, and talent to audition for a role on the new Netflix TV series.

Netflix

According to the casting call, the show is looking for young men and women ages 18 to 21 years old to fill various starring roles in the TV show. Auditions are being held via video submission process. You can easily upload your video audition from the comfort of your home following the instructions listed on the casting call.

According to reports, Netflix has ordered 13 episodes of the Baz Luhrman music drama “The Get Down”. Baz has been working on the show for at least 10 years and it will be the latest project from the “Moulin Rogue” and “Great Gatsby” director.

Jaguar PS / Shutterstock.com
Jaguar PS / Shutterstock.com

This is what the director had to say in a recent interview with Vulture:

The show will use music from the past, as well as original compositions …
Because Sony is producing The Get Down, “We’ll have lots of recognizable, classic cuts” on the soundtrack, Luhrmann says. “We will be using very authentic music from the time. But our young characters — and this is crucial: Their songs are from a mythological musical group. So we have to see them create their own music … That’s important because we want to show an aspirational story. We’re going to use music as a way of allowing the world to be very authentic.”

Writing has already begun, with some well-known scribes attached.
“I’m hunkered down in my little white box around Chinatown, writing it … with a great team of writers.” Luhrmann says. Among those working on the show, he says, are some who “lived in the Bronx at the time” the show is set, including Seth Zvi Rosenfeld (The Writing on the Wall). Author and journalist Nelson George is also “on our writing team,” Luhrmann says, as are Brooklyn playwright Radha Blank, Aaron Rahsaan Thomas, Sam Bromell, Jacqueline Rivera, and, as previously reported, novelist/TV writer Thomas Kelly. “We’ve spent several years doing quiet but very in-depth research,” he adds. In addition to Luhrmann, other executive producers on the show include Kelly, Shawn Ryan, Catherine Martin, Paul Watters (Australia), Marney Hochman (The Shield), and Stephen Adly Guirgis (Motherfucker With the Hat), who is also a writer on the show.

https://youtu.be/kEbRXzKu__8

“The Get Down” centers around the emerging music scene in the 1970’s. The 70’s featured the birth of punk rock and hip hop. The show will be set in New York City which is also the home of an excssive crime rate and corruption. According to Variety, “The Get Down” will focus on a group of teens living in the South Bronx as music develops and explodes in the borough around them.

1970s New York City – broken down, beaten up, violent, cash strapped, dying. Told through the lives and music of a ragtag crew of South Bronx teens – from Bronx tenements, to the SoHo art scene, CBGBs, Studio 54, and even the glass towers of the just-built World Trade Center – The Get Down is a sweeping saga of loyalty, love and betrayal, and the transformation of New York City.

‘The Get Down’ show will premiere on Netflix sometime in 2016.

#TheDress That Broke the Internet – What Color is it?

This Dress destroyed the Internet. But, seriously what color is it?

Something terrible is trending on the Internet right now. Something that is destroying marriages, friendships and causing people to go crazy. And it’s a picture of a dress on Tumblr.

dress

It’s black and blue, right? That’s what I see. I am unable to see any other color. And, yet there are many people all over the Internet saying that it is white and gold.

According to Tony Zhou on Twitter, the dress is “Black & blue. Your brain responds to bad white balance by “canceling” opposites, thus why some see it as while & gold”

My brain is going crazy…

Georgia’s Film Industry Could Explode if Louisiana’s Credits Expire

0

If Louisiana’s tax credits expire, Georgia’s film industry could explode with new TV shows and movies.

Things are not looking to good for the Louisiana’s film industry. With budgetary constraints, the same tax credits that helped Louisiana’s film industry explode may be coming to an end.

According to WBRZ, lawmakers have proposed a cap of $300 million on the amount of tax incentives the state provides to TV and movie producers. However, this is not settling very well with actors and movie producers.

“It’s a little terrifying,” said Ashton Leigh, who’s acted locally for the past six years. “I would probably have to move, as an actress, to Atlanta or something if they did abolish the tax credits.”

Even a cap could be prohibitive to some companies as they plan for future movies.

“We have to know if we’re going to start shooting something one year, two year, three years from now, we have to know that we’re not gonna be stuck in a September, October and be told that, hey all the credits have been used up this year,” said Daniel Lewis, COO of Active Entertainment.

This will most likely lead to an increase in TV shows and movies filming in the state of Georgia boosting the state’s film industry even more. Georgia currently provides a uncapped 30% tax incentive to productions that spend $500,000 or more in the state. Georgia features over 30 TV shows and movies filming in the Peach State including the most watched television series, The Walking Dead. If, Louisiana pulls the plug on their established tax credit system expect more people to move into Georgia and an increase in the number of jobs.

The governor of Louisiana is expected to look over the budget Friday morning. We will keep you updated on the results of the Lousiana Movie Crisis 2015.

Will Smith Shares Amazing Industry Advice for Aspiring Actors

0

Will Smith reveals how to survive in the film industry and what he does to make his career last.

Will Smith has been in the industry for well over 20 years. Starting out as a rapper and transitioning into the acting industry, Smith has developed a second sense about surviving in Hollywood.

In a recent interview with Variety, the Fresh Prince revealed that he was going to disconnect himself from box office numbers surrounding his new feature film, Focus. Previously, Smith argued that he was heartbroken to learn that his movie, After Earth was a box office disaster failing miserably. Since then, he vows not to pay attention to how many people plan on seeing him on the big screen.

“I’m probably going to leave town for a week or so, so I don’t get sucked back into the machine,” Smith said before the premiere of the grifter pic this week. “I can’t allow the box office success, or the lack thereof, to determine my self-image.”

The actor also pointed out some interesting film industry advice for aspiring and working actors. That surviving in an industry for a long time takes more than just good acting skills. It requires knowing your audience and choosing the right movies, if your audience begins to fade.

“I think there is a real question as to who his audience is,” one top studio executive said this week, declining to be identified for fear of alienating Smith. “At one time he had a younger audience. They either mature with you, or you have to put yourself in big movies with a younger demographic.”

Understanding your audience is a key factor in making movies successful and your most importantly your brand successful. And I believe Will Smith has figured that out. From bubblegum rap to con-artists thrillers, Will Smith has taken the world on a joy ride through music, movies and television. The movie Focus is already on track to be the number one movie in America and it will most likely translate into a box office hit overseas, where Will Smith has a large and loyal fan base.
