Are Casting Directors Racist? Ethnic Mandate Creates New Changes

0

Pilot season is in full swing this year and according to reports, TV networks and producers are casting more ethnic and minority actors than ever before.

With the recent success of ‘How To Get Away With Murder’, ‘Black-ish’, ‘Fresh Off the Boat’, ‘Jane the Virgin’ and ‘Empire’, networks are casting more ethnic actors and struggling to find the right talent for the roles.

Empire

According to a recent report by Deadline, 50% of the roles in a pilot have to be ethnic and casting directors are struggling to find the right talent to fill the “ethnic quota”.

From Deadline:

“Basically 50% of the roles in a pilot have to be ethnic, and the mandate goes all the way down to guest parts,” one talent representative said.

In one instance, after a number of actors of different ethnicities tested for two roles in a pilot this year, two Caucasian actors ended up being the top choices for the two remaining regular parts. However, because of a mandate from the studio and network, one of the roles had to diverse, so the pilot could only cast one of the top choices and pass on the other to fulfill the ethnic quota. “They need to say the best man or woman wins,” one rep suggested.

But, it begs the question? Are casting directors casting roles based around talent or are they seeing ethnic actors as the latest trend like light up sneakers and ‘blaxploitation’ movies. Either way, expect 2015-2016 to feature more and more minority and ethnic actors on television with new shows such as ‘Rush Hour’, ‘The Curse of The Fuentes Women,’ ‘Uncle Buck,’ ‘Delores & Jermaine,’ ‘Love is a Four Letter Word,’ ‘Broad Squad,’ and many more other shows featuring minority actors in lead roles.

Adam Sandler Suffers Biggest Box Office Flop of His Career

0

‘The Cobbler’ is Adam Sandler Biggest Box Office Flop of His Career

You probably didn’t know this but, Adam Sandler just released a brand new movie two weeks ago. ‘The Cobbler’ was released in theaters on March 13th and since its release, has been reported to be the biggest box-office flop of Adam Sandler’s career making only $24,000 at the box office in its opening weekend.

You would think, how can a movie that features such a popular actor do so poorly in the box office? Well, one reason could be the lack of commercials or advertising. The other reason could be the movie just sucked. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a rating of 7%, based on 42 reviews, with a rating of 3/10. The site’s critical consensus reads, “The Cobbler represents a slight step up from Adam Sandler’s recent comedies, but while its cloying sentiment proves a more palatable substitute for his usual crass humor, it still isn’t terribly compelling.” On Metacritic, the film has a score of 22 out of 100, based on 18 critics, indicating “generally unfavorable reviews”.

So what was the movie all about you ask? Max Simkin (Adam Sandler) repairs shoes in the same New York shop that has been in his family for generations. Disenchanted with the grind of daily life, Max stumbles upon a magical heirloom that allows him to step into the lives of his customers and see the world in a new way. Sometimes walking in another man’s shoes is the only way one can discover who they really are. ‘The Cobbler’ features Adam Sandler, Dan Stevens, Dustin Hoffman, and Steve Buscemi.

Broadway’s Hit Musical ‘Wicked’ Open Casting Call

0

Broadway play ‘Wicked’ open casting call for singers and actors in New York City.

Wicked is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman. It is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, an alternative telling of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and L. Frank Baum’s classic 1900 story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The musical is told from the perspective of the witches of theLand of Oz; its plot begins before and continues after Dorothy’s arrival in Oz from Kansas and includes several references to the 1939 film and Baum’s novel. Wicked tells the story of two unlikely friends, Elphaba(the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda the Good, who struggle through opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, reactions to the Wizard’s corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba’s public fall from grace.

Produced by Universal Studios in coalition with Marc Platt and David Stone, the Joe Mantello–directed and Wayne Cilento–choreographed original production of Wicked premiered on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre in October 2003, after completing pre-Broadway tryouts at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre in May 2003.

The original Broadway production won three Tony Awards and six Drama Desk Awards while its cast album received a Grammy Award. It celebrated its tenth anniversary on Broadway on October 30, 2013, and played for over 4,698 performances, making Wicked the 11th longest-running Broadway show in history.

‘Divergent’ Star Still Owes $100,000 for Acting Classes

0

‘Divergent’ star, Miles Teller still owes $100,000 in acting classes and he still has not paid it back.

Despite having appeared in several major motion pictures including ‘Divergent’, ‘Insurgent’, and ‘Whiplash’,  Miles Teller still has not paid off his NYU student loans, which, according to Vulture, is $100,000.

Despite it working out it is hard to tell if $100,000 in student debt is worth it. Anyways, Miles Teller revealed why he has not paid off his student loans, even though he is in movies now and can:

“My business manager says the interest is so low, there’s no sense in paying them off. I can, if I want to have that badge of accomplishment, but until then I still very much have my NYU loans.” [Vulture]

People usually pay off their student loans because it will open the door to financial freedom. However, when you’re Miles Teller, you don’t have to.

Georgia’s Film Industry is Growing! New Movie Studio Opens in Atlanta

Georgia’s Film Industry is Growing! New Movie Studio Opens in Atlanta

You can run and you can try to hide but, Georgia’s film industry is growing and many say it’s only going to get bigger.

According to reports, a new mega-movie studio has opened in Gwinnett County Georgia that is being called “beautiful” and a “state of the art facility”.

CBS46 News

From CBS46:

Eagle Rock Studios Atlanta is the brain child of the Economos brothers. After discovering two TV productions found use in their old beer warehouse, they decided to think big when scouting for a new location for their beer distributorship.

“We ended up buying 60 acres and 730-thousand square feet of warehouse space,” said Steve Economos of Eagle Rock.

The biggest benefit to this new movie studio is the fact that it will add new jobs.

What is even better is that without weather delays, there will be more opportunity for more production. More production means more jobs and a bigger boost to the surrounding community.

“Yes, we’re adding jobs,” said Economos. “Yes we’re adding a lot of support business. We’ve met with over 10 different vendors that will be working with Eagle Rock Studios Atlanta. So just the trickle-down effect will be fantastic for this area.”

But, don’t get too excited. The movie studio has not landed any movies or TV shows yet. However, with the growing number of movies and shows filming in the Georgia area, it shouldn’t be too long before producers start knocking at Eagle Rock Studios’ door.

‘Star Wars’ Live Action TV Series Coming Soon

0

Disney is considering making a live action ‘Star Wars’ TV series for TV.

When Marvel announced that they were creating Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. it was considered a big deal because it was the first time an ongoing TV series would join an ongoing film series. This would allow for the two storylines to interconnect between two different mediums, TV and movies. It was a huge risk for the Marvel franchise that ultimately paid off. Now, Disney is considering expanding the Star Wars Universe with a live action TV series.

George Lucas Star Wars

From Cinelinx:

We’ve heard for a while that Disney has been actively trying to get a Star Wars live-action series off the ground, and the fact that this news is popping up again means something changed or was figured out. This sent me digging for more and I’ve come up with some information on the development of the series that you may find interesting.

I’ll warn you now, it’s nothing Earth-shattering (like plot info or start date), but it does show us about where they are in the process, why we’re hearing about it now, and the liklihood that we won’t see it anytime in the near future. I’ve heard from a couple sources now that until the film schedules have all been ironed out (we’ve got at least two movies getting that sorted now), the show is in a holding pattern.

The report goes on to say that the TV show will show connect the storyline between movies, thus allowing for Disney to re-use sets.

It may take a few more years before the TV series hits your living room. But, it is going to happen. But, will people get sick of all the different Star Wars storylines, TV shows, and movies?

Sopranos Actor Lands First Role After Serving Years in Prison for Murdering a NYPD Officer

0

Sopranos actor gets his first Hollywood role after serving eight years in prison for his part in the murder of a NYPD officer.

According to reports, Lillo Brancato, who played a mobster in HBO’s ‘The Sopranos’, has landed his first Hollywood acting role after his 2013 release from prison. The actor was locked up for eight years following a robbery gone wrong in 2005 in which his friend shot an off-duty police officer.

Sopranos_ep206

From Daily Mail:

In December 2005, Brancato tried to break into an apartment with Steven Armento, a low-level mobster and the father of his girlfriend, to steal Valium but NYPD officer Daniel Enchautegui heard glass break as they entered the building and confronted them.

While Enchautegui waited for backup, a gun battle erupted and he was fatally shot in the chest.

Armento was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Brancato was found not guilty of murder but was convicted of robbery and sentenced to nine years in prison minus time served. He was released on December 31, 2013.

After leaving prison, he was given his second chance by William DeMeo, who wrote ‘Back in the Day’, and is also producing and starring in the movie.

Lillo Brancato is now filming ‘Back in the Day’ a movie centering around a Brooklyn boxer. ‘Back in the day’ centers around a Brooklyn boxer who is taken in by a mobster, according to the New York Post. The movie features Alec Baldwin, Danny Glover and Mike Tyson. Brancato plays the cousin of one of the boxer’s opponents and gets in a fight with the lead actor.

Here are the Banned ‘Seinfeld’ Episodes Producers Cancelled

0

NBC censored at least two episodes of ‘Seinfeld’ for being politically incorrect.

It has been nearly a decade since ‘Seinfeld’ aired their series finale, and there are still things about the show that are being revealed to the public. Last year, during a Mike Ryan interview with larry Charles, it was revealed that an episode Larry Charles wrote, was so dark that the director and Julia Louis-Dreyfus refused to do it. It was called “The Gun,”. Now according to a New York Post piece, it was revealed about another unaired episode that was banned from airing:

NBC censors pretty much let Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David get away with whatever they wanted on “Seinfeld.” One of the few exceptions was a proposed episode in which George got in trouble for observing, “You know, I have never seen a black person order a salad.”

Uh-uh, said NBC. An entire episode on masturbation? Fine by us. But there will no joking about the dietary habits of African-Americans on this show. The script was nixed.

It seems to come down to the fact that the Seinfeld cast did not have any recurring black actors on the show making the topic taboo.

But the one taboo that Seinfeld conspicuously didn’t take on was race. Unlike 30 Rock, the show had no permanent black cast members. It was therefore poorly positioned to defy America’s ultimate no-no. Students of Seinfeld lore will know that the staff writer Larry Charles once pitched a storyline in which George got himself into trouble by observing that he’d never seen a black person order a salad. But the idea was deemed too controversial to proceed with.

According to Uproxx, that was not the only episode that producers censored and banned.”It surfaced in Dennis Bjorklund’s Seinfeld Reference: The Complete Encyclopedia, first published in 2010. Interestingly, that book also reveals that Carol Leifer — another Seinfeld‘s regular writers — also had two storylines nixed, one in which Kramer sued a bar over Ladies’ Night, and another in which Kramer played a guinea pig in a medical lab.”

3 Things You Missed in ‘The Walking Dead’ Episode ‘Try’

0

As the season finale of The Walking Dead draws near, last Sunday’s episode of ‘The Walking Dead’ ‘Try’ was crazy.

As Deanna grieved for her son and the group mourned the loss of Noah, a dark shadow crossed the town of Alexandria putting the future of the group into question.

The episode was filled with subtle references and foreshadowing, so here ar things you probably missed in ‘The Walking Dead’ ‘Try’:

Walking Dead Gif

1. The Broken Window Theory

In last week’s episode, ‘Spend,’ Rick told us a criminological theory that argues “If you keep the windows intact, you keep society intact.” Well, Rick really proved this theory when a fight broke out between Rick and abusing husband Pete where the two literally smashed through a window.

The fight looked like two dogs fighting over a bone than two grown men talking out their problems. The brawl showed the future of Alexandria is in question and Rick’s future is probably in real jeopardy.

5-things-you-might-have-missed-in-the-walking-dead-try-318023

2. The red theory

You may have noticed a red balloon throughout the episode. The balloon, which we later learned belonged to Sam, acted as a symbol to Rick’s state of mind through the episode. At first it was calmy floating around. However, the second time we see the ballon it was being dragged by Sam, tugging to get free – it just after this scene that Rick lost it and went back to Jessie and Pete’s house which resulted in the fight. The last time we see the ballon occurred when Rick was choking Pete and he looked up and noticed it had broken free of what had been holding it down, similar to Rick’s mental state and how he lost grip on reality.

But, this red symbol is really significant. Back in Season 3 Morgan made a crazy speech saying that all he saw was red and producers are making sure that’s all that we see. The red boxcar that the group were held in at Terminus, Rick’s red handled machete, the red ‘A’, plenty of blood from those who have died and now the red ballon.

Will Rick end up like Morgan? I guess only time will tell.

walking-dead-try

3. Rick has changed

Over the last few episodes Rick’s behavior has changed for the worst and he has started to act more like ‘Shane’. His whole relationship with Jessie is similar to what Shane and Lori had through Season 1 and 2, not to mention Shane beat up Carol’s abusive husband, Ed, in much the same way that Rick did to Pete. What really showed how Shane completely changed was the speech Rick gave to Deanna shortly before Michonne knocked him out.

The speech is crazy similar to the speech Shane gave back in Season 2 just before he opened the barn doors. Here’s the clip but what do you think? Is this the end of Rick?

‘Empire’ Creator Reveals Kanye West Interviews Was His Inspiration

0

Co-Creator of ‘Empire’ reveals his inspiration for the characters and dialogue behind the hit TV series.

You cannot deny how talented Danny Strong is. The actor/writer has written two award-winning political dramas for HBO, two ‘Hunger Games’ movies, ‘The Butler, and now the most successful TV show in the last twenty years, Empire. He certainly has come a long way from a small role in ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’.

Helga Esteb / Shutterstock.com
Helga Esteb / Shutterstock.com

Danny Strong was recently interviewed on KCRW’s The Business podcast, and he revealed how he was able to write a show that was mainly focused on African-American culture.

“As far as my own experience in the African-American community, the truth is, when it comes for me and writing, I don’t write anything that I have ever had any experience in,” Strong said. “For me, it’s about what interests me, what excites me. Nothing is about my own life experience.”

Danny Strong also revealed where he came up with the idea for ‘Empire’.

“I was in my car in L.A., and I was driving around, and I heard a news story about Puffy, and I just thought, ‘Hip-hop is so cool. That’s what I should do next, something in hip-hop.’ And I immediately began thinking King Lear and The Lion in Winter, and that’s how I work. I go to classical archetypes.”

Danny Strong also revealed where he was inspired. “To procrastinate and for inspiration, I started watching Kanye West interviews. After 45 minutes… I said, ‘Alright, I’m good. I know how to do this.’”

I can only wonder if this interview was Strong’s inspiration for Terrence Howard’s character, Luscious Lyon.

Will Ferrell: We Should Get Rid of Fraternities and Sororities

0

The extremely popular funny man Will Ferrell recently took a bold stance on College fraternities and sororities.

In a recently interview with the New York Times, Will Ferrell the controversy surrounding College Greek life.

Q. Will, we are fraternity brothers of Delta Tau Delta, albeit different chapters and years. The recent awful situation with SAE has brought out the “frat haters” in droves. Could you comment on your own fraternity experience and why (or why not) fraternity membership is still a worthy consideration for a college student? —Stephen Browning, Seattle

A.The incident in Oklahoma, that is a real argument for getting rid of the system altogether, in my opinion, even having been through a fraternity. Because when you break it down, it really is about creating cliques and clubs and being exclusionary. Fraternities were started as academic societies that were supposed to have a philanthropic arm to them. And when it’s governed by those kind of rules, then they’re still beneficial. But you gotta be careful. I was lucky in that the one I was in, we were really kind of the anti-fraternity fraternity. We were considered good enough to get the exchanges with the good sororities. We couldn’t get anyone to vote on anything, but if you needed 40 guys to show up and build a 20-foot-tall papier-mâchéversion of the Matterhorn, we were there and ready. But we didn’t take it too seriously. It was just about having fun. But I think it’s an interesting dilemma for universities these days.

Creator Reveals Storyline for ‘Walking Dead’ Spinoff

0

‘The Walking Dead’ Spin-off, Fear The Walking Dead will be extremely different from the original ‘Walking Dead’

After weeks of speculation, rumors, and fights, apparently the new Walking Dead spinoff will be called Fear The Walking Dead. But, there are still plenty of questions about the upcoming Walking Dead spin-off that have not been answered.

Creator Robert Kirkman has recently revealed some details about the new Walking Dead Spinoff. Rumors suggested that it would be a prequel series but, it seems that it’s not a true prequel. Here is what Kirkman told the “Creative Activism” panel at SXSW:

The timeline is taking place a little bit earlier timeframe than the original show. Rick Grimes woke up from a coma and was like, ‘Oh, man, zombies, weird!’ We’re going to possibly see that unfold a little more in the othe show. But I wouldn’t call it ‘prequel’ because the entirety of the show is going to take place before [The Walking Dead]. It will eventually form a path running concurrently.

Kirkman also pointed out that the show wouldn’t be a simple retooling of the original ‘Walking Dead’ instead the characters will be dealing with the same threat, however the way they do this and how they discover new things will be different.

If you are watching both shows there are things like, ‘Oh they discovered this, or they discovered that in a different way.’ There are a lot of things about The Walking Dead world these characters have to learn or figue out to get by. And there may be somethings that are discovered in the companion show that haven’t been discovered in the other show yet. SO there could be like a thing where, ‘Oh, they encountered a zombie in Season 4 in The Walking Dead that could do this and now we know why that was.’ So we’re going to be doing things like that are going to be pretty cool, but for the most part [the two shows] should be able to stand alone.

Many fans have speculated the possibility the two shows will crossover but, Kirkman says don’t hold your breath.

From the beginning of the show one thing we’ve heard is, ‘What’s going on over here or there.’ So the intent of the new show is to expand that world and show another corner of the United States and what’s happening there.

There is no official release date for Fear The Walking Dead, however it is expected sometime in summer 2015.

Vin Diesel Breaks Down Crying During ‘Furious 7’ Screening

Vin Diesel got choked up during Paul Walker Tribute at the ‘Furious 7’ screening saying “It’s for my brother”.

Vin Diesel made a surprise appearance during a recent Los Angeles screening of Furious 7, where he opened up about Paul Walker’s death and it’s impact on his life.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

“This was a labor of love — it was in some ways the hardest movie I ever had to do because the relationships that you see on film are so real,” said Diesel, who was unable to attend the film’s premiere earlier this month at South by Southwest because his girlfriend was about to give birth. “When the tragedy happened, I lost my best friend. I lost my brother.”

Partway through his address to the crowd, Diesel became choked up and had to cut a sentence short. He was silent for a moment, which brought cheers of support from the audience members.

Universal releases Furious 7 on April 3. Vin Diesel’s full speech can be seen in the video below.
