What You Should Do When Production Doesn’t Pay You

0

What you should do when the production company doesn’t pay you.

Earlier this year, Bruce Willis’ new movie shut down production after producers could not afford to keep production running.

We previously posted several casting calls for the upcoming feature film ‘Wake’ but, according to Variety, producers had to end production of the movie before filming was ever completed.

Financing problems have shut down production of action-thriller “Wake,” starring Bruce Willis, which had been shooting in Cleveland.

“Benaroya Pictures is working quickly to remedy the delay in production on the feature film ‘Wake,’ and we are optimistic we will resume principal photography in approximately 2-3 weeks,” the company said in a statement.

As Variety pointed out, this is the second time Benaroya Pictures shut down production for a movie after filming has started due to financial issues.

You may have a great time on set, love your time working on with A-list actors, and getting your chance to be featured on television-but those things don’t keep the lights on. If the producers suddenly stops paying you, either with a promise to make it up later or no explanation at all, you have rights. Here’s what you need to know.

The answer may not be that easy. You like networking with actors, and all you want to do is get paid for your work so you can keep working and feed your family. Of course, quitting is always an option, but then you would not get paid and without a job, you have a chance of getting blacklisted.

It’s easy to just say that you are going to “sue” but the real world is more complicated then hiring a bunch of lawyers. Maybe you’ve complained to the production assistants, or casting directors and the casting director gives you a check for some of the back pay. But, it’s happened again. Maybe this is the first time this has happened, or everyone else is in the same boat you’re in.

Here’s what you should know when the production company doesn’t pay you.

Broke Person

1. An employer failing to pay you for wages for your work is illegal

The situation is actually far more common than you might think. Many background extras go months without getting paid, production assistants lose vouchers. Whatever the situation, the important thing to know is that an employer failing to pay you wages for work you’ve performed is illegal. At the end of the day the production company and the casting company cannot brush you off, and they can’t just promise to pay you when they get around to it or things “work out”.

Here’s what you should do. Make sure you get personal contact info for everyone you can, go to your state’s Labor Division website that handles wage claims for free. You are entitled to your back pay and penalties, no attorney needed, though you may also want to contact an employment law attorney.

In fact, in many states you don’t even need to get a lawyer what’s owed to you. Reach out to your state’s labor department to find out the best way to move forward.

Quit now, if you don’t think the money is coming.

Most people would say to continue working. But, you may want to go with your gut instinct and just quit. You are better off spending your time and energy looking for a production company that will pay you for your work instead of working for free. Whatever the cause of your reluctance to leave is, try to get past it and look at the money. You’re working for free, your kids are hungry, and you are putting your trust on a group of people who already aren’t paying you while you wait. If that sounds bad, that’s because it is.

If you decide to continue working, here’s what you should do

Broke

Even though quitting is probably the best option for most people, some may find it difficult. If you do decide to stay, here are a few things you should do.

1. Talk to the casting director and producers.

If you are committed to staying at least long enough to give them a chance to pay you, have a frank discussion with your boss about what’s going on and what you should expect. Get to the bottom of the money situation and insist on honest. If they can’t be honest with you, then you should walk away.

2. Build up your acting resume

If you do decide to stay, start working on your resume. Network with other actors, models, and producers. even if you’re heading to set with the hope that things are getting better, you should also act like you are losing your job. Start signing up for other projects, audition for other new roles, and reach out to your talent network.

Look for real, serious change. Even if you decide to stay, and even if production does pay you later, look out problems in the future with the casting company or production company. Someone at the top should be getting fired for it, and there should be serious changes to make sure it doesn’t happen again. If you don’t see that kind of change happening, then leave.

Our first and best advice is that you should quit and spend your time looking for someone who’s capable of paying you for the work you do. If you do decide to hang in there, whatever the reason, we hope that these tips will help you decide where the limits of your acting career, and make a smart decision as to whether you should tough it out or quit.

“Britain’s Got Talent” Fake? Under Investigation Over Stunt Dog Controversy

0

Is Britain’s Got Talent a fake and rigged? BGT is now under investigation over the dog controversy.

British media regulator OfCom said Monday that it will investigate Simon Cowell talent show ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ over controversy surrounding a stunt-double dog used in the most recent season’s finale.

The show on the U.K’s ITV crowned dog Matisse and trainer Jules O’Dwyer as this season’s winners.

The team final act saw the dog balance cones on its head, jump around on its hind legs and perform a tightrope walk, erupting the crowd into a standing ovation from the judges, including Cowell. The dog and its trainer drew 22.6 percent of the public’s vote, 2 percentage points ahead of magician Jamie Raven, allowing for the team to win it’s $383,000 prize.

However, the next day O’Dwyer said that a stunt dog named Chase performed the tightrope walk, saying that Matisse was “a little bit afraid of heights.” That led to complaints, boycotts, and producers apologizing for “not making it clearer” that Matisse had been replaced for part of the act.

The BBC reported earlier this month that the number of viewer complaints of OfCom were over 1,000. The watchdog said the complaints will be reviewed before a decision will be made to investigate the company.

“We assessed a number of complaints about the welfare of the ‘talking’ dog act on this show but won’t be taking the matter forward for investigation,” said an Ofcom spokesman. “We’d previously assessed complaints about this issue and had received information from ITV about the steps it had taken to ensure the dog was appropriately cared for.”

James Bond Producers Gave Employees Cell Phone Numbers Ending in “007”

Producers behind the James Bond franchise give all of their employees cell phone numbers ending in ‘007’.

At the end of every movie or TV show, producers typically give away a gift to the cast and crew. Many famous gifts include bicycles, shirts, hats but, James Bond’s “007” took it to another level.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, all Eon employees, the U.K. production company behind the James Bond franchise’, are giving all of their employees a mobile number ending in “007”.

Spectre will be the twenty-fourth James Bond film produced by Eon Productions. It will be the second film in the series directed by Sam Mendes and will feature Daniel Craig in his fourth performance as James Bond.

As Gareth Mallory, the newly appointed M, continues fighting political pressures that threaten the future of MI6, Bond follows a trail from Mexico to Austria and Morocco as he is drawn into a confrontation with an enemy from his past, who holds a dangerous secret that will force him to question the value of everything he has fought to protect.

Spectre is scheduled to be released on 6 November 2015.

Director of “Big Trouble in China” Not Impressed with Dwayne Johnson’s Remake

John Carpenter, the director of the original “Big Trouble in China”, is not excited for Dwayne Johnson‘s “Big Trouble in China” remake.

Currently, Dwayne Johnson is in talks to star in a new version of the 1986 cult classic but, John Carpenter is only concerned about the paycheck.

The director spoke to the Wall Street Journal on Thursday about whether he would be involved in the new version of the 1986 action film that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is in talks to star in.

“I’m ambivalent about a remake,” said Carpenter, who is also known for directing Halloween andEscape From New York. “On the other hand, it depends on how much they pay me.”

According to Bleeding Cool, John Carpenter participated in a Facebook post about the remake, saying that he was not involved in the project. He said he was “fine” with the new version because he didn’t write the original film, adding: “No harm, no foul.”

Big_Trouble_in_Little_China_Film_Poster‘Big Trouble in China’ tells the story of Jack Burton (Kurt Russell), who helps his friend Wang Chi rescue Wang’s green-eyed fiancee from bandits in San Francisco’s Chinatown. They go into the mysterious underworld beneath Chinatown, where they face an ancient sorcerer named David Lo Pan.

‘Big Trouble in China’ was a commercial failure, making $11.1 million in North America, below its estimated $20 million budget. It received mixed reviews that left Carpenter disillusioned with Hollywood and influenced his decision to return to independent film-making. It has since become a cult classic, with an 83% average rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Game of Thrones” Author Wants You to Shut Up About the TV Show

0

George R.R. Martin used his blog to scold fans who bother him about how the TV show has deviated from his ‘Game of Thrones‘ books.

“Meanwhile, other wars are breaking out on other fronts, centered around the last few episodes of GAME OF THRONES,” Martin, 66, wrote. “It is not my intention to get involved in those [issues], nor to allow them to take over my blog and website, so please stop emailing me about them, or posting off-topic comments here on my Not a Blog.

“Wage those battles on Westeros, or Tower of the Hand, or Boiled Leather, or Winter Is Coming, or Watchers on the Walls. Anyplace that isn’t here, actually.”

This season of “Game of Thrones” has seen several major deviations form Martin’s books – most notably Sansa marrying Ramsay – who then raped her.

It is important to point out that Martin is an executive producer on “Game of Thrones,” which was created for TV by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who oversee the series and script of each of its episodes.

“Yes, I know The Hollywood Reporter named me ‘the third most powerful writer in Hollywood’ last December,” Martin wrote. “You would be surprised at how little that means. I cannot control what anyone else says or does, or make them stop saying or doing it, be it on the fannish or professional fronts.

“What I can control is what happens in my books, so I am going to return to that chapter I’ve been writing on ‘The Winds of Winter’ now, thank you very much.”

Game of Thrones

Is this how ‘Game of Thrones’ will end? This season of “Game of Thrones” has seen kids burned alive, flying dragons, and seductive Sand Snakes, as the show diverges further and further from the books.

The HBO series has now taken a completely different direction, separate from George R.R. Martin’s books by switching characters’ roles, adding new story lines and killing off major characters.

While readers of the books once had a head start on knowing what is going to happen next but, only the producers have the answers to the puzzles. Ultimately, this is pissing off a lot of fans and viewers of the show.

Here’s What the Average Actor Makes Per Year

0

How much does an actor make per year? A new chart shows the average wage for almost every job in America.

Reddit user Dan Lin has uploaded a chart showing the mean-wage breakdown for every career in America tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The top wages all belong to specialized medical fields, while the ones on the bottom are all in food and hospitality. The numbers in parentheses are the mean wages, in thousands, while the different shapes show the range of salaries available in that field.

It is interesting to point out the average wage for an actor. In fact, the average earnings for an actor is around $87,200 a year. That is more than a Biology teacher and mechanical engineer but, less than a Space Scientist and Management Analysts.

‘Jurassic World’ Destroys The Box Office

0

Jurassic World‘ is the summer blockbuster hit that everyone has been looking for.

According to reports, ‘Jurassic World’ is dominating the box office and breaking records by the minute.

The film opened Thursday at 7 p.m. and broke Universal’s all-time “Thursday night preview” debut record with $18.5 million.

Friday’s numbers are in and, combined with Thursday’s grosses, “Jurassic World” nabbed a gargantuan $82.3 million opening day.

That number is the third-biggest debut of all time behind “Avengers: Age of Ultron” ($84 million) and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” ($91 million).

Forbes’ Scott Mendelson reports that if you take away the late-night Thursday numbers, the film actually grossed $64.1 million on Friday alone, which is the biggest “pure” opening day of all time, surpassing the recent “Furious 7” ($52 million) and both “Avengers” films ($63 million and $57 million respectively).

‘Jurassic World’ is now on track to have one of the, if not the, biggest opening weekends of all time and could gross over $200 million in the United States alone. Early tracking had the film earning about $125 million but, those estimates are now way off.

‘Jurassic World’ made millions internationally as well, according to reports the dinosaur franchise series made $60 million across 66 different countries, which is a recording breaking figure.

‘Jurassic World’ took $150 million to produce and was directed by Colin Trevorrow.

This is the latest major feature film debut for Chris Pratt. His last feature film, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ was another box office hit. Guardians of the Galaxy earned $333.2 million in North America and an estimated $441 million in other countries, for a worldwide total of $774.2 million. The film became the third highest-grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, behind The Avengers and Iron Man 3.[201] It was the third highest-grossing 2014 film (behindTransformers: Age of Extinction and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies) and the highest-grossing superhero film of 2014.

Between Dwayne Johnson and Chris Pratt, these two actors are the new Hollywood A-Listers turning every movie they work on into franchise gold.

‘Jurassic World’ occurs twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park, Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. After 10 years of operation and visitor rates declining, in order to fulfill a corporate mandate, a new attraction is created to re-spark visitor’s interest, which backfires horribly. ‘Jurassic World’ features Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Ty Simpkins.
