Steven Spielberg: Superhero Movies Are Just a Phase

0

Steven Spielberg strongly believes that comic book movies are simply a fad that audiences will soon get tired of watching.

Two years ago, Steven Spielberg predicted an “implosion” of the movie industry because of its over-reliance on big budget summer movies. Following the success of Jurassic World, which Spielberg produced, his opinion has not changed.

Featureflash / Shutterstock.com
Featureflash / Shutterstock.com

“I still feel that way,” Spielberg told The Associated Press while promoting Bridge of Spies, an upcoming Cold War-era action-thriller. “We were around when the Western died and there will be a time when the superhero movie goes the way of the Western. It doesn’t mean there won’t be another occasion where the Western comes back and the superhero movie someday returns.”

In 2013, Steven Spielberg wanred of “the big danger” that came from studios putting all of their money and attention towards tentpole summer movies. “There’s going to be an implosion where three or four or maybe even a half-dozen megabudget movies are going to go crashing into the ground, and that’s going to change the paradigm,” he said during an appearance at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts.

Spielberg argues that this will lead to a lack of opportunities for young filmmakers to learn how to produce and make movies.

Talking to the AP, he admitted, “Right now the superhero movie is alive and thriving,” before clarifying, “I’m only saying that these cycles have a finite time in popular culture. There will come a day when the mythological stories are supplanted by some other genre that possibly some young filmmaker is just thinking about discovering for all of us.”

Hulu Announces Ad-Free Subscription Service

0

Hulu is going to become ad free. The streaming network is introducing a new subscription tier that shares its library of content advertisement free for $11.99 a month.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this will be the first time that Hulu will offer their services without ads. When the website first launched it was free but, featured dozens of ads in 2008, and then the following year the company introduced a subscription service called hulu Plus, which included “limited” ads.

But CEO Mike Hopkins argues that consumers asked for an ad-free way to watch its videos for years. “There was a segment of custumers that said, ‘look if you had a commercial-free option, we’d be willing to pay more for it and we’d be happier with the plans,’ ” says Hopkins.

Hulu will now have three options for customers. The free service, the standard $7.99 service, and a $11.99 a month ad-free subscription.

From :

Hopkins says that the two subscription offerings will be identical except for the presence of ads. Hulu has spent the better part of the last year clearing the rights for the ad-free offering and only seven shows — including Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy and Once Upon a Time — will include short pre-roll and post-roll ads. “We’re going to try to really have the differentiation only be the advertising,” he adds. “We think it’s important that the plans are the same except for that. I guess I would never completely rule out [additional offerings] but at the moment the goal is to keep the plans the same.”

But, why $11.99? Well Hulu researched the price point to find the highest number people are willing to pay for no commercials. But the higher price means that an ad-free Hulu will cost more than Netflix’s $7.99, Amazon’s $99 a year, and Showtime’s $10.99.

Hulu currently has 9 million paid U.S. subscribers, a much smaller number than the 42 million subscribers that Netflix reported in July. But, the move to go ad-free will help Hulu to compete with Netflix and compete in the streaming market.

[WATCH] Bryan Cranston: “Being Famous is Like Being a Pregnant Woman”

0

Bryan Cranston reveals what it is like being famous and it’s not all that it’s cracked up to be.

Bryan Cranston is best known for portraying Walter White in the AMC crime drama series Breaking Bad, Hal in the Fox comedy series Malcolm in the Middle and Dr. Tim Whatley in the NBC comedy series Seinfeld. For Breaking Bad, he won thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series four times (2008–2010, 2014), including three consecutive wins.

But since working on Breaking Bad, Cranston’s acting career has exploded. He has had the lucky ability to pick and choose which projects he wants to work on and how he wants to do it. This is going a long way for a man who was a struggling actor for years and even faced being evicted from his own home.

In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Cranston reveals that being famous is not all that it is cracked up to be.

Do you like your “hour of fame”?

Being [famous] is almost like being a pregnant woman. People think they can just put their hand on your belly and tell you, “Oh, you’re going to have a boy!” It’s like having a complete stranger fondling you. And they have this sensibility where they feel comfortable coming up to you and saying, “You know that thing you did? I didn’t like that movie.”

Really?

Oh yeah, it happens all the time. They’re not in the storytelling world, but they hear buzzwords. So they’ll go, “I didn’t like your character’s arc.” But I’m open to all of it. The only failure in art is when you move someone to no emotion whatsoever. I’d rather have people fiercely angry with me so long as they’re moved to some emotion. Even if the emotion was off-target — even if I was trying to move the audience one place and they go another. You missed, but at least they felt something.

It goes to show you that you can be on top of the world but, you can still feel insecure about your talents. You can check out the full video interview below:

Are Black Characters More Likely to Die on ‘The Walking Dead’?

0

Are black characters more likely to to get killed off on ‘The Walking Dead’ series?

The Walking Dead Spoiler Alert

There is a major controversy regarding the race of character deaths in The Walking Dead universe. But, the controversy reached a tipping point last week after the second episode killed off two more black characters, following the premiere episode, which killed off one black character. For those keep track, three characters with significant screen time have been killed off. All three have been place.

In fact, it’s enough of an issue that the Fear the Walking Dead showrunner had to defend those polarizing deaths after the episode aired. It also had many wondering if Fear the Walking Dead is a racist spin-off of the original Walking Dead.

The Walking Dead Seth Gilliam

This is what he had to say:

Once the story was set, it was the story. Once the story is playing out in a specific way, that’s the line that you want to follow. It wasn’t as though we were writing those characters and then casting those characters with an intention of, “This is going to be the death scene for this episode.” For that episode, it was about how it would reflect on the characters themselves and how things would play out over the course of the season. I realize it’s clearly become an issue and it’s something we are mindful of. But ultimately it’s trying to tell the story the best way we can and cast the best people we can. I wouldn’t want to go back and recast a character just to avoid … if it doesn’t feel true to the character or the relationship — the relationship with Alicia and Matt or Calvin and Nick — it’s really about the reality of the world that we’re trying to inhabit and trying to have the best actors portray those parts. When you’re dealing with a show where you have a cast that is as diverse as ours is, it’s inevitable that characters of color are going to get bit and are going to turn or die. If you look at the larger scope of this season, what people will see is that there is parity. We want to tell the story in the best way we can and want the best actors to play those parts. It would have been a mistake to go with Anglo actors for those particular roles because I don’t think that’s honest to the world of the show.

Reddit user empress-of-blandings ran the numbers this week and teh results may come as a surprise to viewers of The Walking Dead franchise. Of the 28 white characters on the series so far, 17 have been killed off. That means 60.7 percent of the white characters have been killed off.

Of the 10 black characters on the series, so far, six have been killed off. That’s 60 percent.

the-walking-dead-episode-516-morgan-james-video-590-nologo

The black characters tend to die at a disproportionate rate in the early seasons of The Walking Dead, but, by casting more non-white characters and diversifying the cast,  the percentages have actually leveled off over the course of the series. That’s progress, however, that doesn’t mean people will take it lightly if another black character gets killed off.

On the positive side, if you’re Asian you are more likely to survive the Walking Dead. Let’s just hope Fear the Walking Dead evens out the statistics in the near future.

How Idris Elba Nearly Died on Set of ‘Beasts of No Nation’

0

Idris Elba nearly died on set of Netflix’s Beasts of No Nation

Beasts of No Nation is an upcoming American war drama film directed and written by Cary Fukunaga, based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Uzodinma Iweala. Beasts of No Nation stars Idris Elba, Ama K. Abebrese, Grace Nortey, David Dontoh and Opeyemi Fagbohungbe.

Variety has finally revealed their full profile of the upcoming Idris Elba film, Beasts of No Nation available, and the stories from the difficult shoot are pretty interesting.

Apparently, Elba, who plays an African man who recruits a boy into his army, fell off a cliff while shooting a crucial scene. A ridge broke his fall, otherwise he would’ve fallen 90 feet.

“I remember slipping and catching onto this big branch that was sticking up, and I literally was like, ‘Whoa!’?” recalls Elba. “It was a moment where I was like, ‘This is the real deal.’?”

As for Fukunaga, he tells Variety that he felt tired just when the shoot was about to start, in Ghana, and turned out to be sick with stage-two malaria that pushed production back a week. he says: “It’s like someone gave you a sleeping pill, along with a pounding headache and a hot-and-cold fever. My entire body ached. My kidneys were aching.”

That’s not all, though. Fukunaga had to fill as camera operator when the one he hired became injured. The production also had to pay for the pay for the food and clothing of extras who were detained in the Ivory Coast on suspicion of being mercenaries, while Fukunaga had to constantly rewrite the script after actors would lose interest and stop showing up for work. To top it all off, the director had another brush with death when he stepped on a poisonous black mamba snake during the shoot.

And there’s more:

The film ballooned $1 million over budget, and Fukunaga found himself struggling to keep it together. “Every day, it felt like we were on a sinking ship,” he says. “I thought, this is going to be ‘Lost in La Mancha.’ We were shooting in rainy season. Sets were washing away.” Fukunaga shed 20 pounds from his 180-pound frame. Because he didn’t trust the local meat — “In Africa, you see chickens and pigs eating garbage,” he says — his diet frequently consisted of a salad of onions, cucumbers and avocado. “I just found out last week I’d been carrying a parasite for the last year, so that was probably part of the weight loss,” Fukunaga says. “I’m on a whole cocktail of antibiotics now.”

When Fukunaga got home and tried to edit, he found that he didn’t have enough scenes and would have to use voiceover to fill in the gaps. The film was saved when Netflix paid $12 million to distribute it. The bulk of the article, which is extremely interesting, explains how Netflix’s revolutionary offer and distribution plan for this and other hard-to-distribute independent movies works.

Beasts of No Nation is scheduled to be released on Netflix globally on October 16, 2015 and the same day, the film will be released in a limited release by Bleecker Street.

Bachelor Contestant: The Show “Ruined Me, My Family and My Career”

0

Former Bachelor contestant Chris Bukowski reveals that the show ruined his life, family and career.

Earlier this week on Bachelor in Paradise, a popular contestant, Chris Bukowski returned. Chris  who was back for the fifth time looking for love after appearing on The Bachelorette, Bachelor Pad,Bachelorette again very briefly, and Bachelor in Paradise season 1 got blackout drunk, gave his date card away, and left the show in a matter of 24 hours.

He then showed up on After Paradise Monday night, apologizing for his “obsession” with TV fame and officially retiring from the show.

“Every day has been a group date with my own demons,” he said with a smile, as Chris Harrison chuckled behind him. “I returned to Bachelor in Paradise in hopes of finding a date to my sister’s wedding. I left without a single memory of my time there.”

via ABCNews

However, that is not the whole story. RantNow published Chris’s much longer and darker apology today.
“I’ll probably get in trouble for this article, but I don’t care,” he wrote, painting an ugly picture of addiction, public humiliation, and familial disputes as a result of his time on the show—a picture of the steep emotional pitfalls of reality fame. His stint on Bachelor Pad “almost completely ruined me, my family and my career”:

I couldn’t believe the hate towards me. The tweets, the Facebook messages, the media, etc. — I couldn’t handle it. I’ll never forget going to my parents’ house and witnessing my dad obsess over all of the stuff being said about me. That show ruined my relationship with my father at the time and created distance between me and my mother.”

Chris, who is a bar owner, revealed about how he felt the pressure to get back in the spotlight to attract more customers to his bar. “Constantly being told that I was irrelevant played a major role in my unexpected arrival during Andi’s season of ‘The Bachelorette.’”

Chris showed up on night 1 of Andi’s season and was told it was too late to join the show, he had to be escorted out by security.

“If for one second you thought I pulled that whole night off on my own, you’re absolutely insane,” he wrote.

He eventually became addicted to his anxiety medication.

As you can see, I’m fighting demons. I’m far from perfect. All I’ve ever wanted is what many would call a “fairytale ending.” I honestly thought that was realistic for me. And I honestly thought those involved in my television career were “looking out for my best interests.”

This letter really calls out the entire Bachelor franchise, which was recently come under fire after Lifetime’s Unreal, which is written by a former Bachelor producer.

Even though Chris Bukowski never found love on the series, this is a fairly saddening. It is clear to most viewers that there is behind the scenes drama because after all a reality show’s producer’s job is to insight the cast members to make bad decisions for the sake of good television, it is rare for members of the Bachelor franchise to actually come out against the show.

Hollywood is Now Suing Users of Popcorn Time

0

Hollywood independent producers are tracking down and suing users of Popcorn Time.

Popcorn Time, the free version of Netflix, allows for people the ability to play movies through torrents with one click. The interface of the app looks similar to Netflix and allows for easy navigation and use of the program.

The program has gained popularity around the world, where movie restrictions have put serious limits in the amount of available content. This popularity ended up causing the app to be shut down by the original creators. However, the program is back online and Hollywood is stepping up.

Popcorn Time lawyers have filtered through copyright infringement cases and laws, they argue that it is essentially a legal program since, users of the program are not actually downloading movies but instead are, streaming them to their computer. Although it provided access to pirated content, Popcorn Time claimed that it did not violate any laws.

“As a designer I love the challenge of simplification. Take something hard for the common user and make it usable. I have a lot of friends who don’t understand torrents and I wanted to make it easy and effortless to use torrent technology,” one of the app’s designers said in .

But, in a recent lawsuit against users of Popcorn Time, the latest technology in piracy may be shutting down.

The producers of Survivor has sued 16 people who used the torrent software Popcorn Time for pirating the title. Independent Hollywood companies are aggressively trying to stop online copyright infringement

From Variety:

Nu Image and Millennium Films, the company behind “Survivor,” identified the users by their IP addresses and are seeking their true identities via subpoenas to Internet service providers. Nu Image and Millennium say that the movie has been downloaded illegally “hundreds of thousands of times and counting,” including more than 10,000 times in Oregon, where the lawsuit was filed.

They said that they are seeking to resolve cases for $750 each in damages, even though infringement carries a maximum of $150,000 in each instance.

In their lawsuit the producers identify Popcorn Time as “software that is specifically designed for committing theft,” and say that users accept a terms of service agreement that includes a provision warning that “by watching a movie with this application you might be committing copyright violations.”

“Popcorn Time makes it clear through its terms of service that its users are willfully committing copyright infringement and gives them a clear option to opt out before engaging in criminal activity,” said Avi Lerner, chairman and founder of Nu Image. “It’s time that we hold people responsible for their action.”

This is not the first time Hollywood has put pressure on piracy. After a leaked version of Expendables 3 hit the Internet, Hollywood created the Internet Security Task Force, which features independent producers. The members of the Task Force have sued people who have downloaded Dallas Buyers Club and The Hurt Locker in a mission to stop illegal piracy.

Talent Agents Say Instagram Followers is More Important than Acting Talent

0

Talent agents argue that social media is more important than actual acting talent.

Fifteen years ago, if you were an aspiring actor, model or talent you would travel to cities like New York or Los Angeles and hope to be seen by a casting director or a talent agent.

However, with the Internet, the entertainment industry is changing and people are finally taking notes.

According to a new report by Variety, talent agencies and casting directors are ditching open casting calls and instead are searching Vine, YouTube, and Twitter for the next leading actor or actress. In fact, it is argued that this new technology driven casting process has transformed the way veteran casting directors and talent agents find new talent.

Mitch Gossett, the senior VP of Cunningham Escott Slevin Doherty Talent Agency and former talent agent of Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato revealed what his agents do on a daily basis and it is not walking the malls of Los Angeles looking for new talent, it is spending time online searching for talented singers, entertainers, and actors.

“The social media stars that we scout don’t live in L.A. or New York,” he says. “They’re in D.C., they’re in Orlando, they’re in Nebraska. They come from anywhere. In the last year alone there has been a marked increase of the amount of time we spend signing social-media players. It’s a very vibrant market and the scouting process has exploded. The business wouldn’t look the same were it not from the technological advances in the past 10 years.” Over the past two years, social media stats have come to play a crucial part in terms of what kid gets what part, Gossett says.

But, the most interesting part is that casting directors no longer care about acting talent. Instead, how many likes, views, followers, and other social media metrics is more important than actual acting ability.

“The casting process has really shifted toward making those social media metrics relevant in casting,” he says. “If you have two clients up for the same part and one has 6 million followers and one has 27 (followers), they’re going to give it to the one with 6 million followers because of the direct access to promotion that will cost them nothing.

This is not really a surprise. Earlier this year, Project Casting revealed how casting directors believe talent only counts for 7% of all casting decisions.

From the Guardian:

To an audience including a high proportion of actors and filmmakers, Hiller said that actors should take comfort from the fact that there are many variables besides talent determining whether or not they got a particular part. Acting talent, she said, may only account for 7% of the reason a particular actor would be cast in role, citing other factors ranging from age and ethnicity to “box office value in China”.

This new pressure from the Internet and social media, is forcing talent agencies and casting directors to spend more time online searching for their next top talent.

Instagram

This can be seen as a gift and a curse. Technology is giving young actors, who may never get noticed otherwise, the opportunity to work on some of Hollywood’s biggest movies and TV shows.

“There’s just so many more opportunities with being able to tape yourself for projects,” says the New York-based Gilbert. “The marketplace used to be much more L.A.-focused and now really anybody can have a chance because casting directors are so open to self-tapes. I have a client in London right now and she’s been sending self-tapes. We have clients that live in Florida, we have clients that live in Texas. One of our clients is in Turkey on vacation and has submitted three self-tapes and they’re all great.”

But, with all of this online interaction lead to problems in the future? As Ellen Gilbert, a talent agent working one of Los Angeles’ biggest agencies, pointed out, there is “no human communication”. She says. “I miss talking to people on the phone. Now, I’m not going to lie, I don’t miss copying 20 scripts, so there are pros and cons. In this business, everybody works, all hours. It does make it easier, but it also makes it harder to shut down. I’m still one of those old-fashioned agents — 26 years after starting in this business, I still pick up the phone.”

Technology has impacted nearly every industry from farming to medicine. Now, the advances in Facebook, high-speed Internet, and YouTube, is putting pressure on the entertainment industry to change as well. It begs the question, would actors like Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathaway still be famous if they grew up in this generation of “likes”. Acting talent and networking used to be how many aspiring actors would get noticed in Hollywood. Nowadays, it is Facebook likes, Instagram and Twitter followers, YouTube subscribers, and Vine views that matter.
