MTV’s Viacom ditches Georgia to build Florida’s growing film industry.
Viacom to produce MTV, Comedy Central and several other network series at a new Miami, Florida studio.
According to TheRealDeal.com, Viacom will create a production hub for it’s global entertainment brands including, Nickelodeon, MTV, VH1, and Comedy Central, at a newly built studio in Miami’s Arts & Entertainment District.
Viacom International Media Networks will occupy the 88k square foot studio beginning November 1st.
The EUE/Screen Gems Studio Miami at 50 Northwest 14th Street, was built after a partnership with Miami’s Omni Community Development Agency and EUE/Screen Gems. The OMCA Community Development agency bought the property, which was a former school warehouse in 2011, and the site is now in the final stages of renovation.

“It was a passion project for the CRA and EUE to bring it to life as a television hub that will create jobs, because Viacom does a lot of shooting and taping, and the crews on their shows are quite large,” Cooney told The Real Deal. And About 250 employees are expected to rotate in and out of each production, he said.
The new studio will feature two 15,000-square foot sound stages and 15,000 square feet of offices, editing spaces, talent support areas, and an accessary room. The space can be used for major movies, TV shows, indie films and all other productions.
Currently, EUE/Screen Gems Studios is leasing the area for 10 years with the option to renew after nine years. The lease payment is $100,000 plus an additional 11 percent gross revenue share.
“It’s very exciting to take an old building and have a magnet-type effect where Viacom comes in and makes a long- term commitment to the facility and will produce from it exclusively,” Cooney said. “It’s a great public-private deal and is keeping jobs in Miami.”
EUE/Screen Gems has production studios all across the country. Including Wilmington, North Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia.
“Today, we have taken another major step toward revitalizing the Omni neighborhood within the city of Miami. We have transformed a dilapidated building into a thriving economic engine that is creating hundreds of good-paying jobs, increasing economic development within the Omni area and revitalizing Miami’s film and television industry,” said Pieter Bockweg, executive director of the Omni CRA, in a statement. “Together, the Viacom announcement and the launch of the film and television studio provide another major commercial component necessary to make the Omni a thriving entertainment district, where people can live, work and play.”
But, how will this impact Georgia’s growing film industry? Well, MTV, VH1 and BET has been utilizing Georgia as a filming location quite often for the last five years. Currently, MTV is filming their hit TV series Finding Carter which is heading into their third season. And, BET recently finished working on their hit TV series Being Mary Jane. However, Florida does not have the tax incentives that Georgia provides. Therefore, there it is hard to tell if this new film studio will take away all of productions from the Georgia.
Disney Parks is considering demand pricing, marking the first time in which the company would adjust prices based on attendance.
The Walt Disney co. is currently considering adding demand-based pricing for its theme parks, according to WSJ.
The change, in which ticket prices would fluctuate based upon how many people are in the theme parks would make it the first time for such pricing policy since Disney first opened in 1955.
“We have to look at ways to spread out our attendance throughout the year, so we can accommodate demand and avoid bursting at the seams,” Walt Disney Parks and Resorts chairman Bob Chapek told the Journal.
Chapek said the company plans to increase attendance during the slower periods by decreasing the prices, and raising prices during the peak days.
Currently, a single-day ticket for Disneyland is $99. Meanwhile, Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom is $105 for a single-day admission.
Ratings for Fox’s hit TV series Empire took a major dip after their second episode and many people are blaming it on the number of “gay scenes”.
According to reports, ratings for Fox’s Empire dropped 18 percent in their second episode. But, despite the drop in ratings the show was the week’s most watched show and gained in numbers in the key demographic.

But, in a post that has since been deleted, Fifty Cent reposted an Instagram user’s post that pointed out the second episode of Empire had 3 million fewer viewers, blaming int on too many celebrity cameos and too many “gay” plots. “There are 3 million less viewers who tuned into last night’s Empire episode!!!! did you watch it?” it read. “We could not take the extra gay stuff or celebrity stuff last night!!!!”
50 cent added, “Empire’s ratings took a huge hit. Okay I’ll stop now. Cookie call me baby. I’ll tell every body to watch the show for you.”
This is not the first time 50 cent called out Empire, earlier he called it “some sh*t you get for free,” as opposed to his premium cable series Power, which is “worth paying for.”
But, 50 Cent should not be too worried about the competition. Power was picked up for a third season after its ratings record-breaking season 2 premiere.

Dr. Phil is facing serious behind-the-scenes drama following recent financial changes.
Phil McGraw also known as “Dr. Phil” is an American TV personality, author, supposed psychologist, and host of the TV series Dr. Phil, which debuted in 2002. However, Dr. Phil became a celebrity when he first appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in the late 1990s.
Born in Vinita Oklahoma, his father always dreamed of becoming a psychologist and moved his family to Kansas. It was there that McGraw became a footballer player and played for the University of Tulsa.
Fast forward 40 years, he has had one of the most watched talk shows on television. Currently, Dr. Phil is the most watched talk show on TV, with Dr. Phil earning a reported $70 million a year. But, according to a scathing report by TheWrap, the show is in facing serious behind-the-scenes problems including layoffs, benefit cuts, and crew revolting against Dr. Phil.
The reason for layoffs is not that clear, since the show is the most watched show in that genre and an average of 4.3 million total viewers. But, people are still losing their jobs.
Since the staff returned to production in August for season 14, there have been waves of layoffs. Days after employees settled in from their summer hiatus, executives carried out the first wave of cuts by axing the entire transcription department.
“It was heartless to cut those people after we returned from hiatus,” an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap. “They could have notified them while we were on break and given them time over the summer to look for other jobs. Instead they let them go right after we got back.”
In addition, Dr. Phil has cut back on medical benefits for several employees forcing crew members to file complaints against the talk show host.
In addition, the show scaled back medical benefits, prompting several union employees to file a formal complaint with the Directors Guild of America, we’re told.
While benefit cuts may seem minor to some, an insider explained that staffers not covered by union benefits are now scrambling, particularly those with families, after their monthly medical contributions jumped from about $200 up to $2,000. “Dr. Phil” is, however, one of the only syndicated talk shows to offer benefits to workers not covered by unions.
According to Forbes, Dr. Phil earns about $70 million thanks to his show and self help books. However, it is not clear if Dr. Phil is being personally affected by these behind the scenes shenanigans. Either way, the people that make Dr. Phil’s show possible are upset by the new changes.
“Some people can’t afford to pay it and are scrambling to find other insurance or in some cases other jobs,” an insider said. “I’ve even heard about people having to postpone medical procedures because the new benefit plan won’t cover things they already had scheduled.”
In fact, the insider said, things are so bad that “there’s about to be a mutiny.”

Dr. Phil is the number one show on TV for that genre and a large part of that comes from the fact the TV series is able to land major interviews with high-profile celebrities and controversial individuals. For instance, following Bobbi Brown’s death, Dr. Phil interviewed her brother/boyfriend about the young girl’s death. Most recently, Dr. Phil sat down with former Criminal Minds and Buffy the Vampire Slayer actor Nicholas Brendon, as he revealed his struggles with addiction and depression.
But, all the high-profile interviews in the world cannot save Dr. Phil, if the crew continues to dissent against the new changes.

Niel deGrasse Tyson reveiws the scientific accuracy of The Martian and it’s pretty epic.
Astrophysicist and TV personality Neil deGrasse Tyson is not the type of person to shy away from Hollywood’s limelight. Whenever, a sci-fi movie is released to theaters Tyson always offers his opinion on the movie and details how realistic the movie actually is. Recently, he went on Twitter to weigh in on the Matt Damon space movie The Martian.
Tyson, is a well known scientist and host of the 2014 Fox hit series Cosmos, revealed just how fictional The Martian was on Twitter by saying world governments don’t defer to science and certainly wouldn’t collaborate to save a stranded astronaut as they do in the movie.

“Evidence that the @MartianMovie is fantasy: All who make important decisions are scientifically literate,” Tyson wrote.
In fact, he pointed out another impossible plot point in the movie: “the USA & China cooperate with one another in Space.”
However, he did love how accurate The Martian described working at the Nasa centers.
“But watching two @NASA centers collaborate — geek gold,” he wrote.
But, Tyson could not find any scientific inaccuracies in the Ridley Scott feature film. He touches on the abstract challenges that Matt Damon’s character, astronaut Mark Watney faces when the botanist is stranded on Mars and must survive by growing his own food until a rescue mission or more supplies can reach him.

Tina Fey is developing a new comedy series for CBS.
For Tina Fey fans this is some amazing news. It has been a long time since Tina Fey has created something fresh for TV. Now, according to reports, CBS has picked up the pilot for a new Tina Fey-produced comedy. The untitled series is about an athlete who drives his family crazy after he suddenly retires.

Tina Fey will be working with Robert Carlock and Jack Burddit, people she frequently collaborates with, reports EW. Carlock was an executive producer on 30 Rock with Tina Fey, as well as her co-creator on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Burditt worked on both shows as well as creating CBS’s Last Man Standing.
There are no official reports as to who will play the lead or whether or not Fey will appear in the series herself. However, Tina Fey’s new movie with Amy Poehler, Sisters, will be out December 18th and the second season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt will debut later next year.

HBO casting directors are looking for actors, models, and talent to work on the final scenes of HBO’s Leftovers season 2 filming in Austin, Texas. Casting directors are looking for background extras to work on Monday, October 5th and Tuesday, October 6th in Austin, Texas. Producers are looking for talent to work on an encampment scene with filming expected to start around 6 a.m.
The Leftovers takes place three years after a global event in which many people disappeared, known as the “Sudden Departure”, which caused the unexplainable disappearance of 140 million people, 2% of the world’s population. The story focuses primarily on the Garvey family and their acquaintances in the fictional town of Mapleton, New York. Kevin Garvey is the Chief of Police. His wife, Laurie, has joined a cult called the “Guilty Remnant”. Their son, Tommy, has left home for college while their daughter, Jill, is acting out.
According to reports, for the second season, 6 of the 14 main cast members from season one have been confirmed as returning, with Liv Tyler, Ann Dowd, Emily Meade, Amanda Warren, Annie Q., Max Carver, Charlie Carver and Michael Gaston’s status all currently unknown. If not returning as main cast members, those stars returning in guest roles are a possibility. Casting is under way for an African-American family made up of father, ex-convict John Murphy, his hearing impaired doctor wife, Erika; and their teenage children Evie, an outgoing athlete, and Michael, a pious christian.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend centers around Rebecca Bunch, a single woman and her experiences finding her longtime soul mate Josh, who dumped her while they were dating in high school in 2005. It’s now 2015 and after being inspired by a TV commercial for a butter spread, she restarts her pursuit of Josh after she spots him in New York City. When he tells her that he is moving to West Covina, California (“Just two hours from the beach, four hours in traffic”), Rebecca decides to move there as well, hoping that it will give her a fresh start and hopefully bring her closer to the still-elusiv e Josh.
