Nasubi – The Most Horrific Reality Show You’ve NEVER Heard Of

Nasubi, how a reality show drove a man insane and became the most-watched TV show in Japan’s history.

When MTV first aired MTV’s Real World, producers could probably never have predicted how much of an impact they would have on the TV industry. Since the early 1980s, TV networks have produced countless reality TV shows that pushed the limits of human nature. For example, who could have ever predicted Big Brother would be such a big hit in the United States and across the world. But, there is one reality TV show that pushed limits of not only television but also limits of human decency. The Japanese reality show Susunu! Denpa Shōnen, which aired from 1998 to 2002, was one of the craziest and wildest reality shows in history. Susunu! Denpa Shōnen had reality show contestants starve, get sexually assaulted and ultimately go crazy.

The show is known for the extreme situations the participants were placed in. The show would end up getting high ratings, and spawned several spin offs. The show was controversial due to the number of sadistic challenges the producers would put in place. In fact, if a participant was doing too well, producers would often change the rules to make their lives even harder. The participants were typically unknown comedians who were ready to do anything to get famous. Upon application, they were chosen randomly, and were not told what the objective of their challenge was. Some of the challengers ended up becoming famous, while many became relatively unknown.

One of the most popular contestants on the reality series was Tomoaki Hamatsu also known as Nasubi, or Eggplant.

Who is Nasubi?

Nasubi was a Japanese comedian who was challenged to stay alone unclothed in an apartment, after winning a lottery for a “show business related job”. He was chllenged to enter mail-in sweepstakes until he won ¥1 million (about US$10,000) in total.

What happened to Nasubi?

Nasubi started with nothing. That means no clothes, food, or any form of outside communication, and had nothing to keep him company except the magazines he went through for sweepstakes entry forms. In addition, he had no idea he was being recorded and rebroadcasted on live television. After spending nearly a year to reach his target, he set the Guinness world record for the “longest time survived on competition winnings” Nasubi lived in front of the camera, with the only possession he won from the sweepstakes, and the stacks of postcards for entering the sweepstakes. But, because producers never gave him any clothes, an eggplant cartoon graphic covered his genitals when Nasubi was standing on camera. Nasubi thought he was being recorded and what he did would be rebroadcasted later on. But in actuality he was on livestream video with the highlights re-broadcasted every week with highlights and sound effects of everything he did. At first he received no food at all, only able to drink water. He later lost several pounds. Eventually he won some sugary drinks from his sweepstakes entries, then a bag of rice. And eventually he survived for weeks on dog food he won. He never won clothing he could wear and he held long conversations with a stuff animal he considered his teacher or sensei. After reaching his goal, he was blindfolded, clothed and taken to a new location. Nasubi was happy believing he was going to get a special prize for surviving for a year. After the unblindfolded him, he found himself in South Korea, where he was shown around town and taken to another apartment. He was once again asked to take off his clothes and challenged to enter more sweepstakes. This time he would have to win enough winnings to get a flight home back to Japan. When he won enough to return to Japan, he was blindfolded, clothed and taken to another apartment in Japan. When he was undblindfolded, he looked around, and undressed himself; showing how he became used to the producers’ torture. But, at the last minute the walls of the apartment fell away to reveal he was in a TV studio with a huge live audience. He couldn’t understand what happened to him because he thought the show had not aired yet.

So what happened to Nasubi?

The entire ordeal lasted 15 months, during which time his diaries were published and became a best seller in Japan, and the TV show broke records with 17 million viewers each Sunday night. For a comparison, that is nearly double the ratings for Game of Thrones.  Nasubi reported being sweaty and hot in clothes after going through this reality show, and for the first six months he had hard time communicating with other people. Following the show Nasbui was unable to land another show and since then he has been working as a D-list actor in small stage plays. Since then the Nasubi reports that he is grateful for his experience and the producer apologized to him. Despite the producer revealing he has no regrets and does not apologize for creating the show. He argues that his goal is to produce miracles on film, and with Nasubi that is what just happened.

You would think that after Nasubi, producers would know when to pull the plug. That is not the case. There was Denpa Shōnen teki Mujinto Dasshutsu, where two people are put on a deserted island and the only way to survive is by building a raft to Japan. Then there was Denpa Shōnen teki Africa Europa Tairiku Odan Hitchhike no tabi, where participants were forced to hitchhike from South Africa to Norway. The contestant would end up nearly dying from dehydration. Denpa Shōnen teki Pennant Race, was the final show before the series was cancelled. The contestants would be confied to a single room with a TV that showed baseball fans team’s baseball games. Their faces would also be hidden from public view. If their team won, they got to eat dinner and a small part of their face would be revealed to the audience. If their team lost, tehy would get no food and the lights would be turned off, leaving them in darkness until the next day’s game. If the contestant’s favorite team went on a win streak, then the participants would receive better food and gain more public exposure. A losing streak would mean contestants would go weeks without food or light. at the end of the season, the contestant would win the overall prize depending upon on how well their team placed.

So what happened to tortured Japanese reality shows?

In the landscape of television, no country has a history quite as unique as Japan. A significant part of this legacy is the era of Japanese torture reality shows, a trend that left an indelible mark on the industry. The popularity of these programs peaked in the 80s and 90s, but recent years have seen a noticeable shift away from this controversial format. Let’s take a look at what happened to these peculiar shows.

Japanese torture reality shows were famous for their outrageous stunts and grueling physical trials. Shows such as “Za Gaman” and “Endurance” gained a cult following for their extreme challenges, which tested participants’ physical and mental fortitude to the limits. Participants were often subjected to harsh conditions and stressful tasks, all designed to entertain the audience through the sheer absurdity and audacity of the scenarios.

However, the popularity of these shows waned due to increasing public disapproval and regulatory scrutiny. The cultural shift towards prioritizing participant’s safety and emotional well-being became a key factor in reshaping the future of Japanese reality TV.

The Japanese Broadcast Ethics & Program Improvement Organization (BPO) has played a significant role in enforcing stricter guidelines on reality TV content, particularly on shows with degrading or harmful elements. This increased regulation has resulted in a notable decrease in the number of such extreme reality shows.

The decline of Japanese torture reality shows was also driven by changes in viewership. Audiences gradually started to favor programs that highlighted human resilience, kindness, and perseverance, rather than physical endurance and humiliation. Shows like “Terrace House” with its focus on interpersonal relationships, have emerged as favorites, signifying a new trend in Japanese television.

However, the impact of torture reality shows on Japanese pop culture cannot be understated. These shows helped shape Japan’s reputation as a producer of some of the world’s most eccentric television content. Despite their decline, they remain a fascinating chapter in the country’s entertainment history, serving as a testament to the ever-evolving nature of audience preferences and broadcasting standards.

While Japanese torture reality shows may have disappeared from the mainstream, their influence is still felt in the more audacious corners of the industry. The shift in viewer preferences and tighter regulations ensure that, although their spirit may occasionally flicker, the age of these shows is largely behind us.

The Truman Show Syndrome, the psychological disorder that makes people think they are on a reality TV show.

Can a TV show or movie make someone go crazy? Well, according to the latest research, yes.

The Truman show delusion, which is also known as the Truman Syndrome, is a type of delusion in which people believe their lives are staged theatrical plays or reality TV shows.

This type of delusion includes two parts, psychologists call them, persecutory and grandiose delusions. Persecutory delusions are a delusional condition in which someone feels that they are going to be harmed by someone or something. While, Grandiose delusions, which occurs in a variety of mental illnesses, are fantastiscal beliefs that one is famous, wealthy, or otherwise powerful when reality they are not.

Together these delusions and the belief they are on a reality show brings upon the Truman Syndrome.

The term was created by brothers Joel and Ian Gold, a psychiatrist and neurophilospher, after the 1998 film The Truman Show. While it is not officially recognized as a psychiatric disorder in the Diagnostic and Statiscal Manual of the American Psychiatric Association, there are numerous cases in which people demonstrate signs of the Truman Syndome.

What is the Truman Show?

The Truman Show is the critically acclaimed comedy/drama movie directed by Peter Weir and featuring Jim Carrey. Carrey plays Truman Burbank, a man who discovers he is living in a constructed reality TV show that airs around the clock. From the moment he is conceived, every part of his life has been televised, and all the people in his life are paid actors. As he discovers the truth about his existence, Burbank fights to find an escape from those that have controlled every aspect of his entire life.

The concept of The Truman Show was first aired on a 1980s episode of the Twilight Zone, “Special Service”, which starts with the main character discovering a camera in his bathroom. The man later learns that his life is being broadcast to people all over the world.

What about the Truman Show delusions?

Delusions are symptoms that are associated with several mental illnesses. And certain type of delusisons are associated with psychosis – “loss of contact with reality”. People that exhibit psychosis are described as psychotic and may demonstrate unusual or bizarre behavior, such as being unable to carry out daily life activities.

Most recently, due to the impact of the Truman Show movie had in American culture, there has been an increase in the number of associated Truman Show delusions, whereby people constantly feel as though they are on a reality show. For instance, people once believed that they were being followed by the government. But, as Psychiatrist Joseph Weiner commented:

…in the 1940s, psychotic patients would express delusions about their brains being controlled by radio waves; now delusional patients commonly complain about implanted computer chips.

The Truman Show could represent a further change in the content of persecutory delusions in reaction to the number of reality shows on TV.

Because reality shows are so visible, it is an area that a patient can easily incorporate into a delusional system. Such a person would believe they are constantly being videotaped, watched, and commented upon by a large TV audience.

How many people have the Truman Show Syndrome?

According to reports, there have been over 40 recorded instances of people dealing with the Truman Show Delusion in the United States and the U.K. Joel Gold, a psychiatrist at New York City’s famous, Bellevue Hospital Center, is the leading researcher behind the Truman Show Syndrome. Along with his brother, a research chair in Philosophy and Psychiatry at Montreal’s McGill Universty, over the course of 13 years they have found well over a dozen people with the Truman Show Syndrome. Typically, the Truman Syndrome affects white men between 24 and 34.

In fact, Dr. Joel Gold reports a man believed he was a being recorded 24/7 by a reality show so he traveled to New York City after 9/11 to make sure the terrorist attacks were not a plot twist on his personal reality show, while another man traveled to New York City to ask for help from the reality show cameras.

What is interesting is that another patient, who actually worked as an intern on a reality TV program believed he was being tracked by camera.

One of Gold’s patients was an Army patient who wanted to climb the Statue of Liberty because he believed that is the only way he can get released from “the show”:

I realized that I was and am the center, the focus of attention by millions and millions of people … My family and everyone I knew were and are actors in a script, a charade whose entire purpose is to make me the focus of the world’s attention.

In the United Kingdom., psychiatrists Paolo Fusar-Poli, Oliver Howes, Lucia Valmaggia and Philip McGuire of the Institute of Psychiatry in London described in the British Journal of Psychiatry describe Truman Syndrome as the following:

[A] preoccupying belief that the world had changed in some way that other people were aware of, which he interpreted as indicating he was the subject of a film and living in a film set (a ‘fabricated world’). This cluster of symptoms … is a common presenting complaint in individuals … who may be in the prodromal phase of schizophrenia.

Following the release of The Matrix many people have argued and believe that they are living a simulated reality. For instance, people argue that reality could be simulated by a computer making it difficult for someone to tell the difference between “True” reality.

So…Is The Truman Show Syndrome real?

While the Truman Show Syndrome is not officially recognized as an actual psychotic disorder, doctors argue that it is a form of delusions that is so unique that cannot be really explained without associated with pop-culture and the movie The Truman Show.

Here’s New York City’s First Public Film School

New York City opens their very first Graduate Film School, Brooklyn College Barry R. Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema

Mayor Bill de Blasio teamed up with City University of New York Chancellor James Milliken, Media and Entertainment Commissioner Cynthia Lopez, Barry R. Feirstein and other elected officials earlier this week to open the doors to the Brooklyn College Barry R. Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema. The Feirstein School, which welcomes their first class of 69 students this fall, is the only public graduate film school in the nation that is associated with a working film lot, Steiner Studios, and will be the first public graduate film school in New York City.

According to an official statement, the mission of The Feirstein School is “to provide affordable access to career opportunities in cinema, while simultaneously creating a pipeline of diverse talent that can work in the local film industry in New York City’s five boroughs.” The project was first announced three years ago and the school’s objective is to reflect New York City’s commitment to growing the entertainment, film, and TV industry in the city.

New York City heavily invests into their own film industry. Currently, NYC has invested $8 million to support the creation of the Feirstein School and numerous scholarship programs so that more New Yorkers have the chance to pursue a career in the film and TV industry. The cost of tuition at the Feirstein is currently $59,000 for instate students over three years. The City paid $4.7 million for construction, $2 million for scholarships, $1 million for curriculum and programming, and an additional $500,00 for grants and promotional marketing services.

“New York City has long been a global capital for film and television production, but today we are making an unprecedented commitment in the future of this industry and in New York’s finest young filmmakers,” said de Blasio. “By opening the Feirstein School, we are unlocking the door of opportunity for a talented and diverse group of students who want to get the best, most cutting-edge education in cinema, and then put those skills to use right here in New York City.”

Experienced directors, actors, and producers are expected to contribute to the Feirsten School in order to help build a school that features the best and talented filmmakers in the world. Ethan Hawk, Steven Soderburgh and Celia Costas have all signed up to help fulfill the school’s mission.

Rosie O’Donnell’s Daughter Calls Rosie Fake, Says She’s Like “Two Different People”

Chelsea O’Donnell, Rosie O’Donnell’s daughter’, blasts her mom in a new interview.

Chelsea O’Donnell, daughter of Rosie O’Donnell, has spoken publicly about her mom for the first time she either ran away or was (according to Chelsea) was kicked out of the house late this summer.

“I find her not genuine a lot of the time,” she told The Daily Mail. “When we’d go out, she was a completely different person in public than at home and I had a hard time with that. It’s like two different people.” Chelsea continues by saying:

“I feel she should be her real self, who she really is. She has this public persona; she will put this big smile on her face and try to be funny. She would always go up to people and want to hold their babies in public. She had this happy, friendly side to her. Whereas when we were home, even if it was on the same day, she would either just be in her room, not engaging with us, or watching documentaries. And if we didn’t want to do what she wanted to do, it would cause a big issue.”

Rosie O’Donnell’s spokesperson went on full damage control and told the New York Dadily News that Chelsea’s accusations are “heartbreaking on every level.”

This may be hard for many people to understand. But, it is safe to assume that neither you nor your parents were famous when you were a teenager. And in an industry that is filled with gossip columns, paparazzi, and people dying for the next story, it is not hard to believe that Rosie O’Donnell, like most celebrities,  acts differently behind close doors. But, it is hard to imagine what kind of impact that has on a teenager.

Why Georgia is Going to Take Over the Film Industry

Georgia is on track to become the king of the film industry.

It is hard to deny Georgia’s impact on the film industry. With recent changes to Louisiana’s tax incentives, many productions have jumped ship and have swam to the 30% tax incentives of Georgia. This is causing thousands of Louisiana residents without a job, career, or opportunities.

Now, according to a report by the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Louisiana film bosses are finally feeling the pressure of Louisiana’s dying film industry.

“People that have come here from all parts of the country to work in our industry are now seeing that we don’t have the jobs, we don’t have the production, so they’re switching over to Georgia,” said Vosbein, CEO of Silver Screen Group. “We’ve got to stop that.”

Major film executives and producers are pressuring Gov. Bobby Jindal to change the state’s film and television production incentive to better compete with Georgia. However, it may be tough since Gov. Bobby Jindal is currently trying to run for President despite being last in the polls.

North Carolina’s film industry once offered a tax incentive program that offered a 25 percent credit to productions. This helped TV shows such as Under the Dome and Sleepy Hollow thrive and prosper in the state. However, after the state removed their tax incentives program for a grant program, Hollywood productions fled the state. Leaving people 4,000 people without a job.

Another Georgia neighbor is currently out of funding as well. Florida currently has a 20 to 30 percent transferable tax credit available to productions. But, the state ran out of money in 2014, ultimately killing the program until more money is allocated.

All of this creates a perfect storm of success for Georgia. In fact, with recent California legislation making minimum wage $15, it would be safe to assume that Georgia will soon become the filmmaking capital of the world with cheap labor, tax incentives, trained crew members, and a plethora of diverse filmmaking locations.

CBS hit TV series Limitless is looking for Asian background extras to work on the new series filming in New York City.

Casting directors are looking for Asian background actors to work on the hit CBS TV series Limitless filming in New York City. Producers are looking for men and women ages 20 to 80 to work on an upcoming episode filming on Monday, October 12th in New York City.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, along with Bradley Cooper and Todd Phillips are developing a TV version of Bradley Cooper’s 2011 hit movie, “Limitless” and will air onCBS. The TV series is expected to pick up where the movie left off, following Brian Sinclair as he discovers the power of the drug NZT, and is coerced into using its enhanced abilities for good.

Love to work out? NBC ‘Chicago Fire’ season 4 is looking for fit models in Chicago, Illinois.

Casting directors are looking for drivers, joggers, and fit models to work on an upcoming scene filming in Chicago, Illinois for the hit TV series Chicago Fire season 4. Filming will take place Starting Thursday and Friday, October 8th and October 9th.

Chicago Fire is created by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas and produced by Law & Order creator Dick Wolf, the show follows the lives of the firefighters and paramedics working at the Chicago Fire Department at the firehouse of Engine 51, Truck 81, Squad 3, Ambulance 61 and Battalion 25.

The Bratayley family plans on livestreaming their son’s funeral for money.

The Bratayleys recently suffered the horrific loss of their 13-year-old YouTube star son, Caleb. They asked that we respect the family’s privacy for the time being but, don’t forget to watch their dead teen’s funeral.

In this day and age of reality TV shows and the constant need to share private information, it should not come to a surprise that Bratayleys are interested in sharing the dead teenage son’s funeral to the world. But, something seems so saddening and off putting that a family is interested in making money off their son’s mysterious death.

HBO Producer Linked to Dermatologist Cocaine Overdose and Death

Dermatologist dies after partying with HBO producer in New York City.

A highly respected dermatologist and mother of three was found dead this weekend after cops reportedly characterizing as a wild cocaine night on the town with a HBO producer she met on Facebook.

According to reports, 38-year-old Kiersten Cerveny was pronounced dead at Lenox Health Greenwich Village after she was discovered lying “unconscious and unresponsive” in a doorway in the early mornings on Sunday.

Cerveny was a well-known and respected dermatologist and professor, who lived in a Million dollar home with her husband, who is also a dermatologist.

Still, despite having what appears to be a perfect life, investigators tell the New York Daily News Cerveny spent her last night partying in the city with Marc Johnson, an HBO producer she reportedly met on Facebook.

From the Daily News:

Detectives trying to pin down her movements said it began around 6:30 p.m. Saturday when Cerveny met some pals at a downtown hotel — and started drinking and doing coke, they said.

By 2 a.m. Sunday, Cerveny was at a Lower East Side bar where she and her friends continued to party, sources said. It was there that Johnson met up with Cerveny.

Johnson and Cerveny left somewhere between 3:30 a.m. and 4 a.m. Sunday, and took a cab to Chelsea to see [James] Holder, arriving around 4:25 a.m., sources said.

Investigators also say they have a video of two men, reportedly JOhnson and a drug dealer, dragging Cerveny into the lobby, where her body was later discovered.

Johnson allegedly told cops “he got scared when she ‘turned blue’ and called 911 after trying to give her CPR.” He reportedly waited until the paramedics showed up before leaving the scene of the crime and asked for a lawyer after giving an initial statement to police.

Cerveny was reportedly fully clothed but for her underwear, which were found in her purse. Police told the News that they don’t believe her death was a homicide.

Nancy Drew TV series is currently in the works at CBS.

CBS is bringing iconic detective Nancy Drew back! The network is teaming with Grey Anatomy almnus Joan Rater and Tony Phelan for a Nancy Drew TV series, according to reports.

The potential series is described as a contemporary take on the character from the iconic book series.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

The potential series is described as a contemporary take on the character from the iconic book series. Now in her ’30s, Nancy is a detective for the NYPD where she investigates and solves crimes using her uncanny observational skills, all while navigating the complexities of life in a modern world. CBS Television Studios-based Dan Jinks will exec produce alongside Rater and Phelan, who also have deals with the studio.

The news comes as CBS is getting ready to launch their own DC Comics TV adaptation Supergirl.

Nancy Drew first appeared in books in 1930 and was originally created by Edward Stratemeyer. The world famous books have been ghostwritten by a series of authors and published under the fake name Carolyn Keene. The character has changed over time and the original TV series The Nancy Drew Mysteries ran from 1930 to 2004. The franchise even included a spinoff series featuring collaborations with Nancy Drew Files and The Hardy Boys.

Study: Watching Good TV Makes You into A Better Person

A new study suggests watching good tv makes you into a better person.

We can all basically agree that there is a new generation of great television. In fact, there are over 400 programs included in the current season. Now, binge-watching TV fanatics can finally have a statistic they can brag about. NY Mag is reporting on a new study published last week in Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts that claims the viewing of high-quality television dramas can increase someone’s emotional intelligence. Apparently, watching a few episodes on Netflix will allegedly make you more empathetic.

The experiment used in the study had roughly 100 people watch an episodic drama, like Mad Men or The West Wing, or an educational reality series like How The Universe Works or Shark Week: Jaws Strike Back. Once the viewing finished, those involved in th study took part in a test often used by psychologists to measure emotional intelligence. According to the report, the participants were “shown 36 pairs of eyes” and were then told to “judge the meotion each pair is displaying.” Those who watched Mad Men characters drink and cheat on their wife achieved better results as opposed to people who watched sharks for an hour.

Overall, those who watch a TV show with a complex fictional storyline, are forced to consider a problem with multiple character perspectives, which tasks the audience to fill in the gaps regarding the lives of those whose stories are playing in the written word of on screen.

With The Walking Dead, and American Horror Story: Hotel coming back on TV this week, you can brag to all of your friends that watching people kill zombies is making you into a better person.

HollywoodLife.com reports that the former One Direction singer is in talks with various TV networks, including E! Networks, about starring in a new reality show about his life after quitting the most popular band in the world.

While it may seem like a bad idea for a former musician to try to become a reality star. Especially when reports suggest that reality TV is dying and audiences are thriving for more story telling TV shows. But, it could open the doors to his boosting his solo music career.
